Pasco County Launches New Brand for Tourism Efforts, Becomes Florida's Sports Coast
n March 7th, Pasco County unveiled a new brand for its tourism efforts, Florida’s Sports Coast. Over 100 people attended the launch event, featuring food from Top Shelf Sports Lounge and a special Sports Coast Ale from Big Storm Brewing. The introduction of Florida’s Sports Coast was held at Tampa International Airport to invite travelers to experience
Florida’s Sports Coast. Featured speakers included Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore, whose district includes Wesley Chapel; Marvin Green Jr, Vice President of the Florida Sports Foundation, and Adam Thomas, Director of Office of Tourism for Pasco County. During the event, Commissioner Moore went over the Commissioner Moore and Adam Thomas break the ceremonial ribbon to launch Florida’s impact of tourism Sports Coast as Pasco County dignitaries, including Commissioner Kathryn Starkey look on. ______________________________________________________________________________ in Pasco County in 2018, including a $615 million economic impact, 1.1 million room nights which equates to 7,500 jobs. Commissioner Moore also highlighted the new Wiregrass Ranch

native of nearby Winter Haven, Dr. Arey grew up with a dual focus on achieving successes both academically and athletically. Following high school, he attended the University of Virginia as both a pre-med student and a pitcher on the Cavaliers baseball team. ver since 10 year old Lexi Zink can remember, she’s wanted to become an Eagle Scout. In 2018, for the first time in its 100+ year history, the iconic program of the Boy Scouts of America opened its doors to young women as well as young men, all of whom now have the chance to earn Scouting’s highest rank of Eagle Scout. Lexi was the first and only girl to become a member of newly created Scout Troop #34, and is now on her way to achieving her dream of becoming an Eagle Scout. As part of this transition, the organization also changed its name to an all-inclusive version - Scouts BSA. Brandi Zink, Lexi’s Mom, said the change to allow girls was very controversial and a few parents in the area went so far as to remove their sons from the organization. Brandi even received some push back from friends and other parents who questioned why she was allowing her daughter to join the organization. She answered the critics, “It’s 100% her decision and it’s her true passion, so I support her. She’s fearless and grew up with her brothers in the Boy Scouts and participated in many Scouting activities with our two sons. This program is teaching her invaluable leadership skills.” She noted, “It’s strange, the boys never treat her any differently, only the adults do.” Brandi explained, “In fact, one of the reasons Lexi became disenchanted with the Girl Scouts after two years, was that they didn’t allow the whole family to participate in camping trips or activities with the troop.” The Boy Scouts encourage families and all siblings to join in the fun, so Lexi always took part in competitions alongside her brothers, including building and racing a derby car in the Pinewood Derby. Her mother noted, “Lexi has always been more into outdoorsy activities such as camping and hiking but that wasn’t as prevalent in the Girl Scout programs.” Brandi explained that there’s a lot of confusion in the community about how the girls participate with the boys. “Most people don’t understand that the boys and the girls are in separate troops but they are partnered with a boys’ troop as a ‘sister’ troop. The all-girl troop is headed by a female leader and the all-boy troop is led by a male. Brandi continued, “On a camping trip, during the day boys and girls participate in all activities together as a group. However in the evening, the troops split off and set up camp in completely separate areas of the campground.” She hopes once parents have a better understanding of how the program really works, more girls will be encouraged to join. Lexi’s new Scout Troop #34 is paired with Scout Troop #33, a well-established group with over 300 members that is chartered and sponsored by Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church in Land O’Lakes. Lexi’s pack is a start-up with 12 girls so far, and they are looking to expand membership and secure local sponsors. Both troops meet every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church located at 2348 Collier Parkway in Land O' Lakes. _____________________________________________________

Performing Arts Camp Offers Surprising Life Lessons
While attending a
performing arts summer camp can be incredibly fun and exciting for your youngster, arts programs also provide some remarkable hidden gems. Many of the lessons provided translate into lifelong skills that will enrich kids’ lives well into adulthood. Studies have shown that participating in an arts program creates a feeling of collaboration, support and connection between students. This unique platform creates a safe haven for children to develop, even assisting students with different learning styles or kids who might slip through the cracks. Here are a few life lessons your child can learn through participating in an arts program.
Confidence
Through expressing themselves through rehearsals and performance, students discover their own voice, grow in selfconfidence and learn to take risks which will serve them in adulthood.
Improved Academic Performance
Performing arts education encourages experimentation and strengthens problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. The experience of making decisions and choices develops a positive correlation between art and other academic achievements, such as reading and math. A report by Americans for the Arts states that young people who participate regularly in the arts are more likely to be recognized for academic achievement, to participate in a math and science fair, or to win an award for writing an essay or poem than children who do not participate. In addition, music stimulates the parts of the brain associated with academic achievement and emotional development.

Get Your Kids Out of the House This Summer

s a parent, you’ve probably become accustomed to seeing your child’s face illuminated by that bright blue glow from their electronic devices. But as we know, all that sparkles isn’t gold. As summer camp season approaches, parents can give their kids the gift of being unplugged and out in nature. Is it hard to imagine your child disconnected from their cell phone or tablet? Luckily, most summer camps require kids to check all electronics at the door, so this time you won’t have to be the bad guy. Many adventure camps are nestled right in our own backyard, offering outdoor fun ranging from highly specialized sports programs to horseback riding at a nearby dude ranch. Others provide rock wall climbing, ropes courses, hiking, paddle boarding, sailing, kayaking, and many more physical activities. Getting out of a sedentary comfort zone helps children develop healthy risk taking skills where they practice taking new steps in a safe, structured and supportive environment, while being cheered on by their peers. There’s nothing more freeing than getting out of your mind and into your physical body where you have only one option - to actually be in the present moment. Different types of camps are available including partial or full days locally, or sleepaway camps. In addition to offering the same perks of a day program, sleepaway camps deliver their own unique benefits by specifically promoting independence, self-care and individual responsibility. This principle is paired with the development of a strong sense of community and teamwork, while immersed in a new environment free of established habits, patterns or thinking. Some parents get anxious sending their little ones out of town for a sleepaway camp, however the kids are usually chomping at the bit to go. Many camps offer family weekends where you and your kids can go for a weekend either to take a camp tour or sleep over to have the experience that your kids would enjoy. Visiting the camp ahead of time makes kids more comfortable when it’s time to check in because they are already familiar with the staff and camp grounds. Regardless of the location, when kids arrive home from a day at summer camp, they often talk non-stop about how much fun they had and the new friends they made. Many parents are greeted by a child who has a newfound self-confidence or has become more extraverted than when they left home. Camp offers kids a refuge from any preconceived notion of who people think they are, at school or at home, by being immersed in a completely different atmosphere filled with new possibilities. This encourages kids to safely stretch their wings a little at a time, resulting in great leaps in personal growth and confidence.
Here are a few of the tips offered by The Florida Department of Children and Families for considering a summer camp program.
√ What are the program’s health, safety and nutrition procedures? √ Ask about the sign-in and sign-out policies, medication and discipline policies, lifeguard certification and water safety, field trip and transportation, handling of sick children, and missing children policy. √ Is the staff screened? Has everyone in the organization been fingerprinted as required by law? Has the camp conducted a check of local law enforcement records, national and statewide criminal history check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Florida Department of Law Enforcement for all of the staff and volunteers? √ What are the staff-to-child ratios and group sizes of the program? Florida’s maximum staff-to-child ratio for school-age children is 1-to-25. National quality standards recommend between 1-to-8 and 1-to-15 for children age 5-to-teens, and group sizes should be no larger than 30. √ Is the staff well-trained? Ask about staff experience and education in early childhood, school-age care, recreation, serving children with special needs, CPR, first aid, lifeguarding and if they are appropriately licensed for transporting children. √ Is the program licensed or accredited? These are not required, however licensure and accreditation ensure that basic health and safety standards are met and often requires meeting additional quality standards. √ Are parents welcome to visit? Are family activities offered? Day programs should be accessible and welcoming to parents at all times. √ Quality programs provide more than continuous free play. Ask to review a typical lesson plan. Plans should be consistent with the philosophy of the program and should include indoor, outdoor, quiet, active, staff-planned, child-initiated and free choice activities. √ Outdoor programs should include indoor or sheltered areas for resting, respite from the sun and to use for bad weather days.

By Maleta Dunne There are three things I don’t usually discuss: my age, my dress size and my physical fitness.
Yes, I was out of shape and looked it. I wasn’t exactly a poster child for the anti-aging health center that my husband, a vascular surgeon, and I operate in Bradenton. It’s not like I didn’t know about the importance of staying fit. I’m a registered nurse. I know that after age 30, we lose 8 to 10 pounds of muscle a decade. For people over 50 like me, it gets worse. The less fit we are, the more susceptible we are to a whole range of ills, from bone thinning, hip fractures and diabetes, to cholesterol and blood pressure problems. It’s also not like I didn’t have good intentions. I mean, I had a gym membership. But here’s the thing: a gym membership really only works if you actually USE it. I never did. And frankly, who has the time or the interest? Not me. I was busy. I was tired. All that changed on October 11, 2005. That was the day I tried a medically-proven form of fitness training that takes just 20 minutes a week and changed the way I look at exercise forever. You read that right: 20 minutes a week. It’s done on special physical therapy equipment under the watchful eye of a personal trainer. Like many people, I didn’t believe it at first. Then I met Virginia Phillips, who operates 20 Minutes to Fitness, the company that brought this form of fitness training to the Sarasota area. She was my age, but had arm muscles that a 25-year-old would kill for. So I tried it. (The first session was free, so what did I have to lose?) Long story short – I was hooked.

But today, I’m making an exception. I’m 55. I wear a size 4. As for physical fitness, well, up until three years ago, I didn’t have any.
The results? Forget about the health benefits, which are certainly there. I can hit a golf ball further. My knees don’t creak. I feel great. I’ve dropped two dress sizes. (Yes, I wasn’t ALWAYS a size 4.) And how about this: I’ve got actual muscle definition in my arms. Yes, I can go sleeveless! Here’s the best part – this workout is so safe I can keep doing it for pretty much the rest of my life. And that’s what I intend to do. It’s the smartest money I’ve ever spent. s a child, Russ Fadil always found himself helping his relatives with their car repairs. He especially enjoyed helping to rebuild the high performance engines of the day, including a 1968 GTO and 1970 LT1 Corvette. “Seeing the inner workings of how things were put together and what made them tick was fascinating to me. With an auto repair background dating back to 1987 in Westchester County N.Y., he ran a gas station, repair shop and AAA Road Service facility, before relocating to the Tampa area in 1998 with his wife, a registered nurse. Formerly an employee, Russ is now the owner of European Autohaus in Lutz. Spring into Cleaning! The History of Spring Cleaning
In many areas of the world, spring is the first opportunity to turn off the heat and open the doors and windows to let some fresh air in after a long winter. In the cold, people tend to keep their homes tightly sealed to retain the heat. Heat sources can create tremendous stuffiness inside the home, so when spring comes – people act like Cinderella –blowing open the doors with a big smile as they let the sun and fresh air invade their space. The term “spring cleaning” can be traced back to the Jewish tradition of performing a thorough cleaning of the home just before Passover. From Winter to devotion – spring cleaning is real.
It’s A Gas!
Floridians don’t typically have severe cold weather problems – that is why people choose to live here, isn’t it? But Floridians do have another invisible culprit to deal with, Radon. Radon
gasses are produced naturally by the breakdown of radium in soils and can enter a structure through small cracks. As the second leading cause of lung cancer, Radon is not something to ignore. There are ways to test for Radon presence in a home. However, a good natural, preventative measure is to let the home “airout.” Keeping a house closed in the winter to retain heat or in the summer to retain cool air gives Radon gasses a chance to engulf a home. What makes this natural gas so dangerous? You cannot smell it, taste it or see it.
Oh, the Yard Looks Tired
In Florida, the falling leaves stretch all the way to spring. By the time spring arrives, Florida yards can look a bit bleak. Just like us, your yard is longing for a bit of sunshine. It’s a time to rake up the leaves, trim the trees and shrubs and put down some fresh mulch! According to the University of Florida’s Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology, homeowners should: √ Check the lawn mower: spark plugs, air filter, and oil. Do the blades need sharpening? Can you raise the mower deck easily or does it need lubricating? √ Check your irrigation system: Do a calibration test to see if any heads are broken or are turned the wrong way.

√ Do a soil test before fertilizing: Proper fertilizing is a science. A Soil Test will help determine what level of phosphorous and nitrogen your yard needs. √ Scout for weeds and evaluate the yard: The University of Florida’s Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology provides a handy downloadable ‘Weed Management Guide for Florida Lawns.’
You Cleaned the Yard. What should you do with the waste?
Check with your county or city Solid Waste Department for collection programs for yard waste. In Tampa, the Solid Waste Enhanced Environmental Program (S.W.E.E.P) collects nearly 3000 tons of debris each year. Hillsborough County offers curbside pickup for yard and wood waste (must be two cubic yards or less). In Pasco County, residents can visit the East or West Pasco facilities where yard waste is disposed of at a rate of $59.30 per ton ($2.97 per pound for 100 pounds).
Inside & Outside Your Castle Walls
Most maintain a clean home all year round, but spring is a good time to address the areas that don’t get as much attention. Here are a few handy springcleaning reminders: • Wash baseboards. • Clean the walls and doors (nasty little smudges at the doorknob area). • Wash the windows (inside and out). • Clean sliding door tracks. • Power wash the home exterior, drive, and walkways.
• Seal stucco cracks. • Clean light fixtures and fans
(how did 6-inches of dust get up there?). • Clean blinds, drapes, and inside window sills (dead bugs - nasty). • Wash the AC vent covers • Have Pets? Clean the fridge air intake (trust me). • Clean your couch - especially under the cushions. • Wash cabinet fronts (again, those hand smudges). • Clean out your pantry of old spices, old flour, sugar, and other antiquities. (Don’t forget inside your fridge – how long has that been there?). • Clean behind your washer, dryer, and fridge (can be scary, but you GOT THIS!). • Flip the mattress and wash those pillows! • Sanitize computer keyboards, remotes, and your nasty little phones.
That sense of Accomplishment It Shall Be Yours!

HUGE SUCCESS!
hat a great day! The 2019 Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce Music Fest held on March 23rd was perfect. Perfect weather, perfect music, vendors, food, beer, wine, friends & family. The only downside was not enough port o’ pottys. According to Les Saland, President of the Chamber, “We just weren’t expecting this many people.” Hence, a bit of a line to find relief. The event began at 4pm which allowed the crowd to soak up some sun with their kids and pets. After the sun set the temp dropped some with a little chill in the air. All one had to do though is get up and dance to get the blood going. We think this should be a monthly event! Kudos to the Central Pasco Chamber!
