AUGUST Around the Yard WHAT TO PLANT: Bedding Plants: The hottest days of summer limit planting now to heat tolerant Coleus, kalanchoe, and vinca. Bulbs: Aztec lily, butterfly lily, walking iris, and spider lily can be planted any time of the year, even late summer. Herbs: Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon and rosemary. Vegetables: Many cool-season crops such as collards and onion can be planted now, including a final crop of warm-season vegetables, such as pepper. Tomato can also be planted for the fall garden. What to Do: Lawns: Apply controlled-release nitrogen to St. Augustine and Zoysia lawns this month. Palms: Check older fronds for yellowing as it may indicate a deficiency of

magnesium or potassium. Apply an appropriate palm fertilizer. Vegetables: If not done in July, solarize the vegetable garden in preparation for fall planting. Poinsettias: Pinch back Poinsettias and Mums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to form for winter bloom. Ornamental Plants: Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilize those plants that show signs of deficiencies. Bedding Plants: Remove spent blooms, cut back, and fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months.

ASK THE EXPERT

Which massage is right for your body’s needs? By Maddy Cox

In today’s faster-and-faster paced world, virtually no one can say that they haven’t begged the heavens for some relief. If you need to release your body’s tension, you’re best bet is a professional massage (not like those half-hearted back rubs you make your kids give you) from the licensed massage therapists at Massage Envy. Because Massage Envy is a topnotch spa, you’ll have a multitude of therapies to choose from. You may want a Trigger-Point therapy massage, which uses cycles of isolated pressure and release to loosen tight areas of muscle tissue that are the sources

of pain in other parts of the body. You actively participate in identifying the specific location and intensity of your discomfort, as well as through deep breathing. You can receive the most well-known massage in the world, the Swedish massage, which relaxes the entire body by rubbing your muscles with long strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. This therapy increases your blood oxygen level, decreases muscle toxins, improving circulation and flexibility and easing tensions. In addition to all these benefits, studies from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine have shown that a 45-minute Swedish massage can decrease levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, and bolster the immune system. Before receiving your massage,

888-749-4547 Tampa Bay

www.InsureThePeople.com

be sure to talk with your massage therapist so that they can customize it to your needs. If other massages aren’t enough to relieve your chronic muscle tension, you should try the Deep-Tissue massage. It’s similar to a Swedish massage, but targets the deepest layers of muscle tissue, tendons and fascia (a layer of tissue clinging to the bone!), and studies have shown it to decrease blood pressure after a single 45-60 minute massage, as well as lower heart rate and stress hormone levels and triggering the release of mood-boosting hormones. If you are an athlete of any kind, from an Olympic swimmer to a daily jogger, you should definitely consider the sports massage. It’s tailored to your sport of choice, targeting areas that are overused and tense from aggressive and repetitive use. Not only can it bring you relief from training stress before a big event, it can give you the enhanced endurance and flexibility you need to excel. A sports massage once or twice a week is a great addition to any training regime. Do you have pain in your feet, ankles or calves? Ask for a foot Reflexology massage, which applies Swedish and sports massage techniques to those areas. This massage can help with plantar fasciitis, injuries, arthritis, and everyday pain and soreness, especially when given regularly. Cranial Sacral Therapy can alleviate stress and pain in the head, spinal

column and sacrum by restoring bones to their natural position and relieving stress from chronic injuries, migraines, neck and back pain, joint disorders and many other conditions. Studies have shown Cranial Sacral therapy to improve sleep quality and reduce the number of migraines recipients experienced for up to three weeks. If you’re looking for an hour and a half of stress-melting therapy, look no further than Massage Envy’s signature Hot Stone Envy massage therapy. Your massage therapist will place smooth, water-heated stones at key points on the body, loosening muscle tissue and allowing your therapist to reach deeper into the muscles during your customized full-body massage. Massage Envy also offers a wonderful massage for pre-natal massage clients, which helps reduce stress, promote overall wellness, and complements prenatal care. It can relieve your stiff neck, back aches, and other ills while reducing any depression and anxiety caused by hormone changes and promoting blood circulation. Your therapist will take extra care to attend to your needs during every stage of pregnancy. As you can see, all your needs can be met right in your back yard at Massage Envy on Bruce B Downs near SR 54. Massage Envy is professional, convenient, and affordable. Request an appointment at 813-548-5600.
