This Garden Circles event is being held on Friday, February 12, 2016 at the Garden Center 2629 Bayshore Blvd. The time is 7-10 pm with food from Metro Chefs, top shelf cocktails, sheik mod decorations and lighting provided by IM Events with entertainment by Bone Yard and includes our wonderful silent auction. This year they are recognizing Garden Circles from across Tampa and what they have contributed to this community in projects large and small. This Valentine's Day,

Show Some Love to, You! By Dr. Jaime Kulaga

F

ebruary is the month of love. But this February, the person we are going to hold on tight to, the person who is getting the extra respect and chocolates (of course), is you. That’s right, you. We spend much of our lives caring for others and often put ourselves on the back burner. This month is for you. In fact, this month will hopefully spur a pattern of behavior that will rub off into other months. While you should care and love for those in your life, you must recognize that there is room in your heart (and schedule) for you to love and respect you, too. Here are 7 tips on how you can show yourself more love:

1. Watch the Self-Talk Your perceptions of you and self-talk play a huge role in the level of confidence you have and maintain on a day to day basis. Negative self-talk can increase doubts and fears as well as anxiety. Words like should, could and ought to increase anxieties because it is so focused on all your mistakes, hiccups and things you still need to do. The reality is, when you talk negatively to yourself day in and day out you are shaping your reality, perceptions and minimizing your worth. The Fix: Start complimenting yourself. This will seem humorous or out of the norm when you first start talking with respect to yourself, but eventually you will begin catching the negativity and correcting it and then slowly the self-talk will change. Also, take time to reflect on your life successes and review those weekly. This will keep how good you really are at the forefront of your mind. 6 february 2016 • Tampa Bay Wellness

2. Be more Self-Compassionate Along similar lines to self-talk, selfcompassion is being kind and forgiving to yourself. So often we allow others to make mistakes, and we don’t judge them or get furious with them. But when we make a mistake, we can be really hard on ourselves. Then, we ruminate and dwell on the mistake and it consumes our life and decreases our happiness or perception of ourselves. The Fix: Allow yourself to make mistakes. The secret is, every single person, especially the super successful people, makes mistakes. The difference is, those who are happiest, can rebound quickly and stay successful use their mistakes as learning lessons. So, don’t beat yourself up when you falter. Instead, allow yourself to learn from it, put it behind you and march forward.

3. Be Grateful I am sure you have heard time and time again to be grateful for what you have, but it’s not always easy. However, being grateful has such power and ability in changing our perceptions. When we focus on the past, it holds us there. When we only chase the future, we see everything we still don’t have and have to work for. Sometimes, we may find ourselves doing a lot of comparing to others as we chase what we don’t have. This keeps us less fulfilled and more likely to have depressive symptoms. The Fix: Leave the past alone, it’s done. As for the future, plan for it but don’t live there. Take a moment to look around and what you have worked for. Look at what you built,

created and already have. Reflect on what you couldn’t live without, but take for granted, and go love on that. Doing these things will uplift your spirits and help you to rekindle the joy in your life.

4. Reward Yourself More In the busyness of this life, often we forget to do a little something for ourselves. When other people do well at something or make a major accomplishment we are quick to praise or give a gift, but often we fail to do the same for ourselves. This month, we get rewarded, too. The Fix: Every single day you should get a reward for doing well. You should reward yourself for big successes and the little ones, too. This will keep at the forefront of your mind your forward progress and keep your confidence up. You are reinforcing your good decisions. Your rewards don’t always have to be monetary or big, but patting yourself on the back, talking nice to yourself, grabbing a small chocolate, getting a special water or tea you like, taking the scenic route, those count, too.

5. Exercise Exercise is on just about every list for making your life better. The reason it makes the list is because exercise really has amazing power over our body and mind. Exercise releases endorphins which, in return, boost your mood. Exercise also is a great stress reliever. So, when we go back to the day to day grind, we will go back with more clear mindedness. This clear mindedness helps to make better decisions, choices and increases confidence. However, because of the day to day grind, we don’t always have time or energy to exercise. The Fix: Don’t think of exercise in terms of black and white, 60 minutes or nothing. Instead, be more open minded about your routine. Not many of us have 60 minutes to exercise each day, plus drive time to the gym and showering after. Instead, there are so many apps on your phone where you can exercise right in your bedroom, kitchen or living room. And you don’t have to exercise 60 minutes. Many of the apps have workouts from 5-60 minutes. Five minutes is better than 0. Start somewhere and start small. Don’t compare yourself to others. Just get up and start moving for your own mind and body. Show you some love!

6. Eat the “Good” Stuff Ninety percent of serotonin is made in your gut. Serotonin is the chemical that makes you happy. If you feel a dip in your mood, or you feel that something is just “off” but you don’t know what, do a quick self-check. Have you been eating processed and fast foods? Have you been frequenting anti-biotics? If so, the serotonin has a tougher time distributing out of your gut and throughout your body. This may be the cause for the dip in your mood. The Fix: Show your gut some love. Begin eating cleaner. Stay away from processed and fast foods. If you need some on the go foods, try raw nuts, fruit, tuna fish, etc. The world is “on-the-go” and grocery stores know this. So, check out your local grocer for quick on the go foods that are healthy and enjoyable. You don’t have to be perfect, but stay away from turning the drive through into a habit. Other options to eating healthy are to meal prep on Sundays for the week, putting smaller portions on your plate, not eating the leftover food on the kiddos plates after dinner, and increasing your water. and office space with water so it is around you all the time. Easy access to water will encourage you to drink more of it. And, water will make you feel full and clean all day long. Feeling the love yet?

7. get Rid of the Toxic People If you want to show yourself some serious love, get rid of the haters. These are the people that shove you into a corner and make you say “yes” when you really want to walk away and say “no.” These are the people that plant seeds of doubt in your mind when you want to go for a goal. They are also the ones who take you on a rollercoaster of ups and downs. These people brew negativity around them. Negativity truly is contagious. The Fix: Make a list of all the people that are toxic in your life. And, yes, sometimes this list will have family on it. Then, I encourage you to delete these people out of your life altogether, and those who you can’t rid of completely, begin setting boundaries with them. You can start setting boundaries slowly and steadily. You will know when you have set strong boundaries because you will begin seeing how great life can be. This Month’s Challenge: Each week in February, commit to doing one of the tips above. Then, reflect on your confidence level and overall happiness with your life.

Wife: “How would you describe me? “ Husband: “ABCDEFGHIJK.” Wife: “What is that mean? “ Husband: “Adorable, beautiful, cute, delightful, elegant, fashionable, gorgeous and hot.” Wife: “Aw, thank you but what about IJK? “ Husband: “I’m just kidding !” .....Now on a serious note,

n a healthy relationship between significant others, the two individuals are interdependent like the Sun and Moon. The moon doesn’t need the Sun to rise and the Sun doesn’t need the moon to set, but they do need each other to activate the universe. In our lives, we will have better relationships if we foster this sort of interdependence - a situation where each person strives individually to become a more loving, Light-filled human being. In this scenario, each person in the relationship has his or her own nature, but both find that their journey through life is more beautiful and offers more opportunities for spiritual growth when taken together. (Quote from; Karen Berg, teacher , author and spiritual director of Kabbalah Centre International) However, we have many other relationships throughout the course of a lifetime, besides a spousal relationship. When we speak about relationships, we speak about our connection between us and other human beings. Having connections with others is part of the purpose of our creation. Whether you desire it or you don’t, you will be affected by other people. When we look at ourselves we can see, that most of our challenges are related to other people. If it’s our ego our fears or insecurities it is usually linked from us to others. It is said that when we are looked at from a cosmic awareness - we are measured in how we interact and relate to others. A relationship is a tool that is given to us to achieve our purpose - our higher self.

A relationship is what is exposing our weaknesses and our strengths. Those of us that are familiar with Hollywood movies know that when the relationship begins in the movie..... the movie ends. In a real life we know that when the relationship begins, that is when the journey and the real work begins. Throughout our lives we develop various levels of relationships, the highest of all is friendship. The word friendship has lost its true meaning over time because we use it so freely. We should be so lucky to have one true friend in our lifetime. Let’s look at what true and healthy relationship looks like. The friends we typically surround ourselves with are those who will support us and who will agree with us no matter what. After all, who needs a friend that’s not on our side? It can be quite upsetting, when our friends disagree with us and point out our wrongdoings....... maybe it’s time to get a new friend, someone who will understand us better and stroke our ego. Now let’s go deeper! True healthy, spiritual relationships are based on a three-column system: Left - the desire to receive Right - the desire to share Central - represents the balance between the two Everything in our world is based on the three-column system, from the simple act of boiling water to long lasting relationships. Boiling water you say? Yes. If you have water and you have heat, can you make the water hot? No, the first you need is a vessel, (pot) which is your central column, or restriction to make it happen. Anything that we do without restriction or the central column will not be long lasting. Anything other than the genuine desire to share will not be long lasting. If our sharing has control, neediness or wanting to be loved - attached to it, it will not lead to long lasting relationships, it will run its

course and eventually end. Healthy relationships have to lead us toward change and show us things we need to work on. The three-column system is like a light bulb, left and right column and filament in the middle that represents restriction. Without the filament in the light bulb, there will be a flash of light and then darkness. Therefore, without a central column in a relationship it cannot be long lasting. In healthy relationships the restriction is applied to give us a moment, (pause) so we can seek a solution coming from our soul (mercy), rather than coming from the ego (judgement). The two-column system is more or less like an exchange program. I give something and I get something back. The two-column system relationship has no spiritual Light in it. We are constantly aware of what we are investing and what we are getting out - we are keeping score. That type of relationship can only lead to unhappiness. Healthy spiritual relationships are based on a three-column system, there is continuity growth and there is future. Relationships are not a goal but a purpose to achieve and to become better version of myself. When Michelangelo was asked how he created the statue of David he answered; “When I looked at the block of marble and I already saw David in it, all I had to do was chisel the excess away.” Let’s look at our own blockages and chisel away, and bring forth better version of our selves.

e are all divine spirits. Namaste! There have been a lot of changes in the universe lately. It is now easier and beneficial for everyone to connect to the other side on a day-today basis. It is beneficial for yourself, for your family, for your life and for the Earth. Our planet’s vibration is rising. Our own vibration is rising with it. We are in a time of death, and in a time when new life is beginning. A new birth is clearly happening, and a new awareness is slowly being born. There is an increased awareness of the need for change, the need to clean up the Earth and act upon it. Spirit Helpers can be defined as multidimensional beings of the white light that specifically assist you in remembering your own divine essence. They are your bridge to your Source (God, Goddess, Buddha, Allah…whatever your truth is). This can be guardian angels, guides, ascended masters, animal totems, or fairies (elementals). These beings are directly linked to our Source, your God or Goddess, whatever form you choose to give it. They assist you in remember-

Humanity is involved in lack and in believing that it is hard to live here on the Earth and it is not. Choose to rise above the muck of the planet. Human beings are walking through mud. When you become light by your intent of learning more of who you truly are, all of a sudden the mud just starts sliding off of you. You’ll have nerves of steel and can’t be easily rattled. You’ll feel in the flow and everything runs smoothly. When you talk to your Spirit Helpers or you connect with them even for a few seconds, your vibration changes because you are connecting to an Angelic realm. If you do that throughout the day, you

may end up connecting for 10 minutes. Then your vibration has been raised for 10 minutes. Once you start connecting more and more, then your vibration stays higher and higher longer. That is better for your general well-being, the people around you, and the Earth because you are emitting this energy of the higher vibration. Only positive circumstances come to you now. You can’t change others, but you can help others with your own energy. In these times of light, our bodies are changing in response to this new energy around us. Each of us has our own rhythm: times of the day of greater strength and lucidity. Choose a time daily to enrich your spiritual practice through prayer or ritual. You may not do the exact thing every morning, but have your practice contain the same basic elements of lighting a candle, honoring your God/Goddess or simply calling on spirit, breathing, meditation, prayer, or yoga/stretching. A Healthy Relationship By Dennis Alexander

O

ne would think that the most important item in a relationship would be love. It is not enough. Loving someone and being loved is great, exciting and exhilarating. But there is one extremely important component to a HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP that is far more important! Communication. Open, honest communication should be part of every healthy relationship. Here are some suggestions to help in communicating. Find the Right Time. If something is bothering you and you would like to have a serious conversation about it, make sure you pick the right time to talk. Don’t interrupt your partner when they’re watching a sports game, TV show, about to go to sleep or stressed about an upcoming test. Tell your partner you would like to talk later and find a time when you’re in the same room and not doing anything important. Don’t start serious conversations in public places. Talk Face to Face. Avoid talking about serious matters or issues in writing. Text messages, letters and emails can be misinterpreted. Talk in person so there aren’t any unnecessary miscommunications. Do Not Attack. Even when we mean well, we can sometimes come across as harsh because of our word choice. Using “you” can sound like you’re attacking, which will make your partner defensive and less receptive to your message. Instead, try using “I” or “we.” For example, say “I feel like we haven’t been as close lately” instead of “You have been distant with me.” Have your heart tell your mind to tell your mouth what to say. Be Honest. Agree to be honest. Sometimes the truth hurts, but it’s the key to 16 february 2016 • Tampa Bay Wellness

a healthy relationship. Admit that you aren’t always perfect and apologize when you make a mistake instead of making excuses. You will feel better and it will help strengthen your relationship. Check Your Body Language. Make eye contact when speaking. Sit up and face your partner. Let your partner know you’re listening. Show them you really care. Don’t take a phone call, text or play a video game when you’re talking. Listen and respond. Use the 48 Hour Rule. If your partner does something that makes you angry, you need to tell them about it. But you don’t have to do so right away. If you’re still hurt 48 hours later, say something. If not, consider forgetting about it. But remember your partner can’t read your mind. If you don’t speak up when you’re upset, there is no way for them to apologize or change. Once you do mention your hurt feelings and your partner sincerely apologies, let it go. Don’t bring up past issues if they’re not relevant. How to Communicate if You Are Angry It’s okay to get angry in a relationship – everyone does at some point! What’s important is that you resolve conflicts in a healthy way. If you get angry with your partner, here are a few steps to take: Stop. If you get really angry about something, stop, take a step back and breathe. Give yourself time to calm down by watching TV, talking to a friend, playing a video game, taking a walk, listening to some music or whatever helps you relax. Taking a break can keep the situation from getting worse. Think. After you’re no longer upset,

think about the situation and why you got so angry. Was it how your partner spoke or something they did? Figure out the real problem then think about how to explain your feelings. Talk. Finally, talk to your partner and when you do, follow the suggestions above. Listen. After you tell your partner how you feel, remember to stop talking and listen to what they have to say. You both deserve the opportunity to express how you feel in a safe and healthy environment. Being a good listener is very important at all times. Communicating isn’t always easy. At first, some of these suggestions may feel unnatural or awkward, but they will help you communicate better and build a healthy relationship. *Credit excerpts from Love Is Respect

ealthy relationships require healthy boundaries. A healthy self-worth usually gives people an understanding of what to accept and what not to accept from their partners. Setting personal boundaries protects a person and prevents the possibility of abuse, whether it is verbal or physical. A healthy relationship has a balance, a personal life for each individual involved including friendships as well as a life together as a couple, they communicate their needs, respect each other, have fun, forgive and accept their differences. These people have common goals and personal goals, they communicate their boundaries without feeling guilty and understand that if they go beyond what they are comfortable with they will feel the consequences. The consequences of being mistreated may carry on to other relationships or bring up feelings and emotions from the past, therefore they know not to let any form of abuse be applied to them, as it can often take a long time to heal. Lack of respect from a dysfunctional childhood may distort belief systems to an extreme and give cause for thinking of it as being normal, confuse unconditional love and influence relationships, in a search for validation. tionship, each will remember the value and worth of the other. Each will treat the other with the same compassion and understanding that is desired by all. A Personal Healing Story

In 2001, I was left to die by the western medical profession. By 2003, the last option I was given was Hospice and a feeding tube. That didn’t seem like a cure to me. And if it wasn’t a death sentence, I don’t know what is. How did I ever end up here! I grew up in northeastern New Jersey and had a normal childhood except for the fact that it seemed every winter I experienced every flu, respiratory infection or strep throat that was going around. I missed many weeks of school, and spent half my life on antibiotics. The northeast area of NJ is very industrial and not much was known about environmental pollutants in those days. And, my father as superintendent of parks for the city we lived in, always had a good supply of chemicals around to keep our lawn looking the greenest in the neighborhood. My parents doted on me as any only child and not only sought medical attention at the first sign of illness but I had the best of dental care and by the time I was nine I had a mouth full of dental amalgams. By my twenties, things started to unravel. I had my first major surgery and it seemed after that it was one thing after another. I had constant bowel problems and started testing positive for mononucleosis several years in a row until I just stopped being tested. It would be some time before the medical community determined that Chronic Epstein Barr Virus was a disorder now called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I traveled all over the country to find help and finally a clinic in Nevada came back with a diagnosis of CEBV along with Cytomegalic virus, Herpes Simplex I,II, Herpes Zoster and traces of radiation fallout from nuclear tests done in Nevada while I was there, and Chernobyl fallout as it passed over Florida. I had systemic Candida that was around my heart and lungs and other organs. I was treated there for several years 20 february 2016 • Tampa Bay Wellness

until I eventually became too sick to travel and began to treat myself and find local holistic practitioners. I managed to maintain some form of a normal life with a lot of limitations. I was also developing more symptoms and eventually developed Fibromyalgia. This all took place over a 30-year period, or my whole adult life. I continued to do the best I could and denied a lot of symptoms just to be able to function.

Then my world came crashing down. One February morning in 2001, I awoke and was unable to get out of bed due to the pain and fatigue. I thought it was just a flare up of the Fibromyalgia and assumed a few days of bed rest would do the trick. I was wrong. I never did recover. My body had finally crashed. I now started the long journey to find some definite answers. I saw many practitioners, holistic and allopathic. After tens of thousands of dollars in testing and close to $100,000 in medical bills, I was no closer to being healthier. I was diagnosed with Lyme disease, Lupus, toxic heavy metal poisoning including mercury, arsenic, aluminum, cadium, lead, and many types of viruses including rickesia, retroviruses etc. I had developed severe reactions to insecticides, pesticides and everyday beauty products. Chlorine and numerous everyday chemicals poisoned me. I was extremely affected by perverse energy such as microwave, power lines, radiation, etc. I had developed an adenoma on an adrenal gland and a cyst on a kidney. And, not the least of which Leaky Gut Syndrome which means that my intestines had become porous and were no longer absorbing food in the proper proportions and leaking undigested food into my bloodstream. No wonder I was down to 85

lbs. Also, after the initial pain of the FM disappeared, I was left with agonizing back pain. I saw every medical specialist and had numerous x-rays, MRI’s and CT scans all showing nothing and each doctor subsequently dismissing me. The pain was agonizing and no pain medication helped. I eventually was put on morphine as a last resort but could not count on that as consistent pain relief. The pain was constant and intractable. During this time, I also lost the ability to sleep. I had sleep tests done showing I got no sleep but no doctor seemed to know what to do and no medication seemed to help. I never got relief from the pain. Along with that, I developed a hypersensitivity to the world around me. I could not tolerate light, motion, and noise. I virtually laid in my bed for three years with the windows covered so no light could enter with no visitors because I could not tolerate movement and I was too dysfunctional to carry on a conversation. My husband took care of me day and night tending to all my needs. When all else had failed and the last doctor said “hospice”, we knew it was time to make preparations for the end. Everything in my body was failing. All my organs and every system was now poisoned and damaged. It was amazing I was still alive at that point. I was now actually looking forward to the end, as it was going to be a release from the pain and the horrible life I was bound to. I researched ways to hasten my demise so I would not have to suffer any longer and made plans.

And then my world changed! Old friends from Ohio flew down and were compelled to visit. Although I had not seen anyone in a long time, I felt they Contact us 813-501-4894 •


needed to see me and perhaps it would be the last time. They shared many things with me and said they believed there was something out there for me and that they would find it before they left in two days. They called the next day and gave my husband the name of the Sentient Temple. We asked very few questions and just called. Within days, Drs. Dennis and Fern Alexander were at my home for what would be the first of many healing sessions. They entered my darkened room and I could barely see them. I don’t know how long they were there but they said they would return the next week. On the third week, they returned with two other healers from the Temple and told me that other healers of the Temple around the world would also join us. They began their work; there was toning and chanting; they applied Reiki in many modes; called upon ascended Avatars, and used Quantum-Touch. When they were done, I stepped off the massage table we were now using and I stood up straight. I stood up straight! I had not stood up straight in close to three years due to the incredible pain which had crippled me. But,the most miraculous event was that I

also stood with no pain. I had no pain! I called to my husband to share this joyful news. For the first time, I now had some hope that I would recover fully. The Alexander’s came every week for six months at times bringing other healers with them. By the end of the fourth month, I was functioning around my home and attempting to go out for short periods of time. I went out to lunch. I went to a store. I started spending quality time with my husband and connecting with friends. All things I had not done in three years. By the end of six months, I was driving and going out by myself. We had to buy another car as we had sold mine when we thought I would never need it again. In less than a year after they first came to me, I attended my first dance. I was an avid dancer before my illness but could not imagine dancing again during my illness. I now dance 2-3 times per week. I attend weekend dances out of town. I am now able to take care of my home and my husband. And, best of all, I found a purpose to my life and that is to give back what has been given to me. I began to study with the Sentient Temple. After months of private tutor-

ing, and attending classes in Mayan, Usui and Karuna Reiki, I studied Mind projection in Multidimensional Mind, along with Intuitive Diagnosing and Quantum-Touch. I have become a Certified Instructor in all these venues. Most importantly I learned how to connect with my Source, the Prime Creator. n this third article in a series on natural approaches to the Syndrome of aging, we will address the causes and emerging treatments for aging. Yes, aging may be described as a disease, or perhaps a group of disorders with their related signs and symptoms, associated with aging. It is fairly common knowledge that the effects of aging on the human brain may be delayed through extracurricular activities that include physical, social, and mental components. Yet we all experience our own individual versions of the aging syndrome. The information contained in this article is backed by research which is available upon request.
