The Cory Lake Isles Neighborhood Watch group hosted our final Adopt a Road cleanup of Morris Bridge Road Eight early risers met at the Morris Bridge Guardhouse in the wee hours of the morning on November 4th to gather gloves, reflective vests, garbage bags and grabbers to venture out onto Morris Bridge Road for our final cleanup of 2023. This incredible team picked up 46 bags of trash, several tires, a safe (no valuables to report, sadly) and SO MUCH STYROFOAM! This group is our Cory Lake Isles Adopt a Road team, and it’s sponsored by our Neighborhood Watch Group via Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful. We meet 4 times a year, sometimes more, to walk from CLI to Flatwoods and back, picking up trash along the way. It’s a great way to start the day, meeting new people and doing good for our community. A SPECIAL SHOUT OUT to John Hall, who has been volunteering his personal time for the past 6+ years. John has NEVER MISSED A CLEAN UP EVENT. Ever. Annual Fall Festival Event Thank you for all who attended the Cory Lakes CDD Annual Fall Festival event, it was a success!!! We had a time and I loved bringing the community together both grown and young were out having a blast playing, enjoying good fun, getting face paintings and joining in on the games and activities but most of all enjoying each other. It was so beautiful and amazing, with the short time we had to put this together it was amazing. A Guide to Preventing Dryer Fires

ryer fires are most commonly caused by a buildup of lint in the dryer and exhaust duct. When dryers aren't cleaned regularly, the lint buildup restricts airflow, making clothes take longer to dry— an early sign of a problem. Another indication of poor or obstructed venting is that the dryer’s external cabinet or its control area is hotter than usual. If that happens, disconnect the dryer and check the vent. Every dryer has an operational thermostat, a high-limit thermostat, and a thermal fuse. The operational thermostat measures the air temperature drying clothes. If lint clogs the vent, the thermostat can't measure the temperature properly, leading to overheating and activating the high-limit thermostat. Improperly vented dryers can cause indoor air quality issues and mold growth. If heavy fabrics take too long to dry or feel hotter than usual, a clogged vent is likely. To prevent fires, use the dryer correctly and avoid drying certain materials. Overloading the dryer with clothes or leaving cotton towels contaminated with oils can also lead to fires. Plastic or flexible dryer ducts can be fire hazards, as lint can catch fire in twisted vents. Use only approved flexible ducts, according to safety guidelines. A real-life incident involved a basement dryer fire caused by towels contaminated with gasoline. After cleaning up a motorcycle spill, the homeowner put the towels in the dryer, leading to a house fire. hazard. • Accumulated lint can trap moisture, fostering mold growth. • Lint, highly combustible, can quickly ignite near the heating element, causing house fires. The Alarming Statistics FEMA reports that dryers contribute to around 13,820 residential fires in the United States annually, resulting in over $233 million in property damage. Rapid Spread of Fires: A single spark in the lint can rapidly escalate through the vent, reaching surrounding materials and structures in a short amount of time, resulting in a large and destructive fire. Dryer Fire Prevention Tips Follow these tips to prevent dryer fires: • If clothes don't feel dry after a cycle, check for a plugged vent and clean lint. • Install a smoke detector above the dryer. • Never leave the dryer running unattended. • Clean the entire duct system at least twice a year. • Clean the lint filter after every load. • Avoid overloading the dryer. Cleaning the Lint Trap After Every Load Regularly cleaning the lint trap after each load is a straightforward task. Slide out the tray and use your fingers to collect the lint, ensuring efficient removal. However, your filter may still be clogged if you use fabric softener sheets in the dryer. Test your dryer filter by clearing it of lint, then pouring a small amount of water onto the filter screen. If the water pools up instead of flowing through the screen, wash the screen in warm, soapy water using a brush. Rinse, retest and repeat until the water flows through.
Sort Clothes by Fabric Type: Different fabrics shed varying amounts of lint. When possible, separate clothes by fabric type to minimize lint production. Fabrics like towels produce more lint compared to lighter fabrics, and separating them can reduce the risk of lint buildup. Delicate Items: Use a lower heat setting for delicate items to prevent overheating and reduce the risk of fabric combustion. Maintain Clear Space: Keep flammable materials, such as paper, lint, or stacks of clothing, away from the dryer to minimize fire risks. Ventilation System Inspection Periodically inspect the exterior vent to ensure it's free from obstructions, minimizing the risk of overheating. What to Do if Your Dryer Catches Fire? 1. Stay calm and alert. 2. Prioritize safety. 3. Cut off the power. 4. Call emergency services. 5. Use a fire extinguisher if safe. 6. Close the door if the fire is contained. 7. Avoid using water. 8. Wait for professional assistance. 9. Assess the damage. Preventing clothes dryer fires requires diligence, regular maintenance, and a commitment to safe laundry practices. By incorporating these simple yet crucial measures into your routine, you can enjoy the convenience of your clothes dryer without compromising the safety of your home. n view of the fact that there have been three very destructive house fires in Cory Lake Isles in less than two years, the CLI Safety & Security Committee is asking all residents to become informed about the most common causes of home fires and most importantly, take steps to prevent a house fire! In the tapestry of our daily lives, our homes stand as sanctuaries – a place of warmth, comfort, and security. Yet, woven into this fabric are hidden risks that, if left unchecked, can unravel the very essence of our haven. Among these risks, the specter of house fires looms large, threatening not only our possessions but the safety and well-being of our loved ones. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the most common causes of house fires and equip you with the knowledge and strategies needed to safeguard your home.
Electrical Fires – Unveiling the Invisible Threat
Within the confines of our homes, a complex web of wiring powers our gadgets, appliances, and lighting. However, this network, when compromised, can give rise to a formidable foe: electrical fires. The leading cause of residential fires, and electrical malfunctions demand our attention and understanding.
