An Evening with Simon O’Neill

Kiwi opera royalty and former local Simon O’Neill is joining the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to perform Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder this month. A frequent performer with the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House and numerous others, O’Neill has established himself as an epic force of nature in the realm of opera. The concert will be conducted by Lawrence Renes, a Dutch conductor with a long association with both O’Neill and NZSO Music Director Edo de Waart and includes Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 in E flat major.

Combining classic and contemporary dance with themes of climate change, the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s Dancing With Mozart busts out some new moves this month (Isaac Theatre Royal, June 8/9).

Featuring works by some choreographic titans of the 20th and 21st Centuries – all set to the music of one of history’s best loved composers – with the great George Balanchine’s Divertimento 15, along with Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort and Sechs Tänze all being staged for the first time in New Zealand. Also included is the world debut of former Christchurch lad and NZ’s hottest dance export Corey Baker’s The Last Dance, a new work based around the dance he created in Antarctica with RNZB dancer Madeleine Graham in February to highlight climate change – the first ballet work created in the southern continent. It was only a few months ago that Alex Watson was working in recruitment and brewing his bone broth as a side hustle. Fast forward, and you can now find him working full time on his passion project, hawking his wares at the Christchurch Farmers Market every Saturday. Together with his wife Catherine, he has been making and drinking bone broth for the last three years, and extols its health benefits. “We are absolutely passionate about producing high-quality, small-batch bone broth right here in Christchurch,” he says. Though a new player in the market scene, he’s garnered quite a following. He’s happily surprised to find out that most of his customers already know the health benefits of bone broth. Some of them take it daily as a tonic, while others use it as a cooking ingredient. Bringing some much needed sparkle and an abundance of glitter to Christchurch are the Christchurch Faerie Circle. The 12-strong circle of whimsical individuals, founded by Lily Peas Blossom (Charlotte Benfield) formed after the 2011 earthquake in hopes of adding a bit of light-hearted, good-will charm to the lives of Christchurch citizens. Around the summer months, you can find the faeries out in full force, flitting around the city with Christchurch icon the Arch Wizard of New Zealand, or at organised free events such as picnics, tea parties and hospital visits.

They even host their own themed balls, including the popular Labyrinth Masquerade Ball. Keep your eyes peeled for remnants of glitter around fave faerie haunts such as the Botanical Gardens and for Lily Peas Blossom and other faeries like Luna Bluebelle, Ruby Ravenfeather and Kaylee-bug Starfire!

STRETCHED TO THE LIMIT Cityscape checks out the celeb go-to fitness regime, and one of the world’s most followed forms of exercise, with a class at Scoop Authentic Pilates.

I’m definitely feeling the burn in my abs near the end of the Pilates 100; holding my feet in the air and pumping my hands, concentrating on my breathing to get through.

I’m at a Saturday morning mat class with Scoop Authentic Pilates instructor, studio owner and all-round picture of health Laiza Lima. The class is made up of a near 50/50 split of men and women, with ages ranging from early 20s through to nimblebodied seniors. The in-jokes and good humour suggests they’ve been through more than a few classes together and I’m quickly welcomed into the fold.

During my one-on-one class with Laiza, a degree-trained physiotherapist with a post grad in biomechanics and thirdgeneration Pilates instructor (“The person I trained with trained with Joseph himself!”) explained the principles around the form.

“It’s all about strengthening the Powerhouse (or core, with the addition of the glutes), and

applying Joseph Pilates’ teaching to everything we do in life. Posture is everything,” she says as I stand up a little straighter.

We start out on The Reformer, operating on resistance with springs before hitting the top-of-the-line Cadillac, able to isolate every muscle group in the body while stretching, strengthening and lengthening your way to better posture and a rock solid Powerhouse.

Back in the mat class, we end the comprehensive workout, stretching and strengthening by massaging our spines on the mat by gently rocking back and forth from the sitting position.

As I’m wiping down my mat my neighbour asks “Is this your first class?” After I confirm he replies: “You did good! Stick with it – I’ve been doing it for 10 years and I haven’t looked back.” I leave the class with my head (literally) held high, it’s working already!

CSO’s Lamb & Hayward Masterworks season continues with this month’s Fear and Courage, a rousing line-up that gets an assist from Russian piano prodigy Nikolay Khozyainov, who joins the orchestra to perform Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No.3. Dmitri Shostakovich’s incredible Symphony No. 5, which came to fruition as a result of immense pressure from the Communist Party (who had denounced the composer’s work) – and was later hailed for its coded protest at the ruling system – will also be performed. Bernard Herrmann created one of the most recognisable film scores of all time when he wrote the music for the iconic Psycho in the 1960s, and his nerve-jangling A Suite for Strings rounds out a night of emotionally stirring music.

Artists and collectors of artwork from every corner of New Zealand will be descending on the city for the Christchurch Art Show (Jun 21 – Jun 24).

Celebrating its 5th year, the Show will once again be back at the Air Force Museum where more than 100 artists and over a 1,000 pieces of art will be on display. Becoming a firm fave with artists and collectors nationwide, the largest art show in the South Island offers up a vast array of artwork from emerging and established artists, with the option to

Reuben Paterson is having his first exhibition in Christchurch for many years.

He is coming from his home in New Plymouth with 14 new works – all of them in his renowned glitter; all florals as he calls them, on paper in limited edition prints and on canvas; some square, some circular! The show is called You Were Blue And I Was Purple. As implied in the title, and also in the work reproduced here, colour in all of its glorious shimmer and its quieter nuance is very important for Paterson. Flowers are dazzling forms in themselves, and the backgrounds too are rich and evocative. There can be a Polynesian feel. But there are also subtleties of mood, of emotional colour if you like, that help Reuben’s work linger both sensually and in our imaginary. thecentral.co.nz

Local goldsmith Joachim van Oostrum talks to Cityscape about his highly personalised jewellery collection Love In A Jewel (which he co-created with his wife Tracy), following your heart, growing the business and global attention.

OW DID LOVE IN A JEWEL COME ABOUT? When my wife Tracy lost a very special person, she asked me to make her a pendant which would keep her loved one close, and so together we sat down and started sketching ideas. And Love In A Jewel happened from there. We originally created a beautiful pendant to hold ashes, but when we wanted to make a pendant for Tracy’s young niece, we realised ashes were too much for her and the handwriting of her Nana would be much nicer inside her pendant. So we cut the ‘Love Nana’ from an old birthday card she had from her Nana and this went into her pendant. We then started to think about how important it is to show those we love how much they mean to us, so we started to imagine that our pendants could be suited to more occasions. Like a groom giving a pendant to his bride on the morning of their wedding with a love note from him inside, or a daughter who is graduating from university with a note from her parents inside, a person going on an OE with a note from the family inside, etc. There are many times in life when you want to give a gift which is really special.

WHAT ARE YOUR BACKGROUNDS? I’ve been working as a goldsmith and designer for 25 years and worked for high-end jewellers in Amsterdam and New Zealand. For a while I was a ‘troubleshooter’ goldsmith commissioned to do the difficult jobs and deadline work for a prestigious jeweller in Amsterdam. Sometimes if they forgot to order a wedding band I was called in. I had to make the ring, then jump on my motorbike and make my way as fast as possible through the Amsterdam traffic to the reception, with my boss yelling in the background “I will pay your fines, but don’t kill yourself!”

It was an exciting time, but I’m older and wiser now!

Now that I am my own boss I make sure there are no last-minute jobs! I really enjoy what I do, and have been lucky enough to get some interesting jobs in my career; one highlight was getting to make a brooch for Queen Elizabeth II, which was given to her by John Key. My wife Tracy started as a window dresser, ticket writer and illustration artist at Ballantynes Department Store when she was 17. She went on to be the Marketing Manager at Ballantynes, The Palms and other companies. We are both creative so we enjoy bouncing ideas off each other.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE DESIGNS? Firstly, we wanted to create jewellery which was as beautiful on the inside as it was on the outside. It’s the love captured inside which makes our collection so special. Then we wanted to make designs which were elegant and could be worn every day – because these pendants are something you really treasure and you want to be able to wear them every day. So it had to be timeless designs which look just as good with a white t-shirt and jeans as they do with an evening dress. We also only wanted them to be made from lasting, quality materials, so for that reason we don’t do any plating. All Love In A Jewel designs are available in sterling silver or solid yellow, rose or white gold, which is sourced from the West Coast.

International Jewellery Fair in Sydney”. So we took it there and got a great response. At the last minute we decided to enter it into the International Design Awards, and it was selected as a finalist, which was a buzz. Most orders are coming from New Zealand and Australia, and we’ve also sent them as far as The Netherlands.

WHAT SORT OF LOVE ARE PEOPLE PUTTING IN THEIR JEWELS? This “Love” is most often notes, but can also be ashes, sand, soil, a flower or the handwriting of a loved one who has passed away. We have done sand from the beach where a man first kissed his wife, notes to mums from their grown children and handwritten notes of love from boyfriends and husbands. These personal notes are written from the heart so we often hear that the response they get is quite emotional. Christmas morning was great as we had a lot of men texting us saying things like “Wow! I wasn’t expecting that response!” Speaking as a European man, we are not afraid of being romantic, so it’s nice to see Kiwi men also showing their romantic side. We had a six-foot-five Kiwi farmer order a pendant and he said “What should I write?” but actually it came out that he had been thinking about it for the last two days and knew exactly what to write. His partner loved what he had written so much she burst into tears. We hear that quite a bit. The compartment varies for each pendant design. The biggest compartment is in the Circle of Love pendant, and this fits a note which is 3cm wide by 2.5cm deep. You can actually fit quite a bit of writing on it, as of course you can write on both sides. …YOU MUST HAVE HEARD A LOT OF REALLY TOUCHING STORIES? Yes we have; probably our standout story so far is a wedding proposal which went into a Love In A Jewel piece. Our customer is happy for us to share his story – on one side of the note he wrote the dates their children were born, and on the other side of the note he wrote his wedding proposal. So when he

gave her the beautiful Rose Gold Love Drop pendant he also gave her the photographs which showed the note tucked inside her pendant. And so she read her wedding proposal and now she carries it inside her pendant forever!

WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO SEE ROCKING ONE OF YOUR PIECES? Lorde, because she took her passion and made it happen – she is a Kiwi to be proud of.

HOW DOES IT FEEL WHEN YOU SPOT SOMEONE WEARING YOUR JEWELLERY ON THE STREET? It’s hard to put into words. We feel really proud to be a part of bringing this happiness and love to people.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT CREATING THE ULTIMATE IN PERSONALISED JEWELLERY? In between Love In A Jewel, I make bespoke engagement rings and wedding bands. It’s nice to be part of this time in a couple’s life and to make something unique and special for them. I like to involve them in the process by showing them step-by-step the ring coming to life. I also restore and remodel family heirlooms and do repairs.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR LOVE IN A JEWEL? We will be growing our number of stockists of Love In A Jewel throughout New Zealand and Australia this year, and launching some new designs to add to the collection.

f any part of Christchurch personifies a bounce back from adversity with creativity, innovation, community initiatives and funky venues, it’s Lyttelton.

Post quake, it’s more tight-knit than ever with a rough and ready hipster cool, all framed with those unforgettable harbour views. The trip through the tunnel, (or over the hill, if you’re so inclined) ushers you into a community that’s a breath of fresh sea air with a mini-break vibe. We peruse the port for the hottest spots, tastiest eats, best bars and more.

On the café scene, the Lyttelton Coffee Company legend has spread well beyond the boundaries of the port, so it’s great to visit their heritage building HQ and find it living up to the hype with great service, food, and (of course) coffee (and the delicious smell of the roaster!). Spooky Boogie is a record store with some major bonuses: their coffee, cakes and scrummy treats all go gangbusters, and you’ll also want to check out the original art pieces. The Shroom Room serves up delicious vegetarian and vegan goodies amidst a cool sort of backcountry-hut vibe in Albion Square. For further “treat yourself” goodness you’ll definitely want to hit the legendary Lyttelton Bakery, home to Bree Scott’s Glamour Cake and her epic slices and gourmet donuts in new flavours every day (think the likes of salted caramel brandy snap, jelly tip cheesecake, and Baileys mocha) – but be fast, because these fly out the door!

On the evening dining scene, high on any list of mentions must of course be Roots Restaurant, the degustation restaurant that has earned a reputation as one of the country’s very finest. Owners Giulio and Christy Sturla have achieved tremendous success (as in, for example, being named New Zealand’s very best restaurant in 2015 by Cuisine’s Good Food Guide) with fresh, seasonal and organic fare, much of which is foraged from around Banks Peninsula. You’ll also want to check out relative newbie Super, a hip haunt with its own left-field take on Japanese food. Arbour bangs out some awesome woodfired pizzas from their funked-up yard in Oxford Street, adding sweet live tunes and a super chilled atmosphere for good measure. If you want to get Lyttelton’s funky food vibe at your place, another option is to look up the crew at Green Dinner Table (based in the old British Hotel), whose plant-based ingredients/recipe delivery service will have you whipping up your own restaurant quality vegetarian fare each night at home.

Time for some shopping! Lyttelton is creating quite the reputation as a boutique shopping destination. The Lyttel Kiwi offers a collective of gorgeous hand-made crafts and giftware including soaps, jewellery, clothing, homewares and more. Henry Trading Co., described as an “independent miniature department store” offers a carefully curated collection of goods including homewares, knick-knacks, gourmet foods, art, and more, much of it locally made (including Lyttelton Lights, luxury scented candles that have blown up big around the country). The window displays next door at Sweet Thursday will also entice you in to view their eclectic

collection of homewares, collectables and fashion. The iconic Leslie’s Bookshop, meanwhile, is the mothership of magazines and attracts bibliophiles from miles around.

If you can drag yourself away from your coffee at Spooky Boogie, you’ll want to check out the vinyl, books, t-shirts and giftware. Serious snow bunnies will want to check out Kingswood Skis, where they hand-make some seriously top-end bamboo core skis to your specific requirements.

Shopping bags loaded and tummies full; time for some entertainment and exploration. The Lyttelton Arts Factory at the corner of Oxford Street and Sumner Road is the new incarnation of The Loons Theatre Company, and its nice new black box theatre plays regular host to both touring productions and the local company’s own output. June for example sees The Revolver Club bringing us two nights (Jun 1/2) of aerial circus and cabaret.

That harbour is out there too, just beckoning you to explore it; jump aboard Black Cat Cruises for trips over to the delightful Diamond Harbour or Quail Island, where you can explore historic sites, spot native birds including little blue penguins and stroll the network of trails across the island, taking in the progress of the native replanting project. It’s also your chance to take in what might be called the booming “Lyttelton sound” driven by local acts like Marlon Williams, Aldous Harding, The Eastern, Delaney Davidson, Tiny Lies, and more, many linked to Lyttelton Records and Ben Edwards’ The Sitting Room studio.

The Garage Sale. The Harbour Co-op developed out of one of our initiatives, and then there was a food growing box initiative, a garden exhibit developed for the Ellerslie Flower Show, Grow Harbour Kids and Creative Samplers, among others.

Culture of Possibilities Cityscape catches up with community initiative Project Lyttelton’s Wendy Everingham to talk about her role in the organisation’s stunning success, the special character of the town, and delicious pesto.

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO LYTTELTON? Arriving in Christchurch in 2003, we had never set foot in New Zealand! I felt Lyttelton had a similar feel to Fitzroy in Melbourne.

It was attractive because we both like to live in a village where everything is in walking distance. We also liked the gritty alternative feel, the proximity to the port and the natural environment.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT PROJECT LYTTELTON AND HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED. Project Lyttelton has been around for a long time. It started in 1994!

Back then it was about history and street scapes. In 2003, Margaret Jefferies started to ask the community what their vision for the place was. That’s when I arrived and I was at these meetings and the next thing I knew, I was Treasurer and Secretary and Margaret was Chair of the organisation. A culture of possibilities was created. We gave residents permission to create what they thought the community needed. I began with a walking project that mapped and signed all the walking paths in Lyttelton. Margaret got the first Timebank in New Zealand up and running in 2005. Timebanks are a mechanism to share your skills in a community. Services are paid for in time.

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS BEHIND THE SUCCESS OF THE LYTTELTON FARMERS MARKET? Firstly, it’s a regular weekly market where you can buy almost everything you need. It’s a real street food supermarket. Secondly, it’s a really friendly trading space. Stallholders know the regulars and locals come down to meet each other and their friends. The vibe is special and that’s enhanced by our local musicians and street performers who come each week to add to the experience.

WHAT ARE THE MOST DELICIOUS AND THE MOST UNUSUAL THINGS YOU’VE SEEN THERE FOR SALE? The most delicious food for us is produced by Gerry from Horotane Foods. Her Dill and Spinach Pesto is delicious. Not being pet owners the most unusual stall for us is the Top Dog Barkery. Treats of all sorts for dogs!

HOW DID THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS COME TO BE? The Lions Rugby tour in 2005 was the catalyst. We had three cruise ships in port for accommodation for the rugby fans.

Some of us wanted to give the fans a reason to get off the boat and explore Lyttelton.

We literally pulled the festival together in six weeks! The simple formula of street party, fireworks, local talented musicians, mulled wine, lights and stalls never seems to tire.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP HANG-OUT SPOTS AROUND THE PORT? We love to pop into the Shroom Room for the best vegetarian breakfast. Saturday mornings we also love to visit Civil & Naval for a great coffee. For a special occasion we can’t resist Roots Restaurant. We are always so amazed with what chef Giulio Sturla can create from local ingredients. Just strolling around Lyttelton is interesting. There is always someone to talk to and ever-changing views of the harbour and hills.

WHAT’S LYTTELTON’S BEST-KEPT SECRET? It’s what lies within the old gaol walls. Our quaint Community Garden is equipped with the best wood-fired pizza oven and is great for informal community gatherings. Also tucked away is the Rose Garden. I have been to quite a few really intimate concerts up there. The smell of the roses and views are something!

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOUR MUM EVER GAVE YOU? Not to be afraid to try new things. I will give most things a try – within reason!

HAVE YOU GOT SOMETHING NEW ON THE BOIL? The project I’m most engaged with at the moment is re-creating forest in Urumau Reserve. With the help of a small team of locals, we are engaging with the community and encouraging people to source local seeds to grow our own plants for a community nursery. These are then planted into the reserve by a variety of locals from school children to adults. It’s really satisfying to be re-wilding our open spaces and at the same time learning so much about our special nature. lyttelton.net.nz

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NAME. The name came from the track of the same name on the single ‘Adventures of Stevie V’.

It works for a back-to-back duo – two guys with different tastes in music (aka ca$h) getting dirty on the decks.

HOW DID YOU GUYS GET INTO DJING? Pylonz/James Meharry (aka PZ) started in the early 90s collecting jungle and breakbeat, producing underground rave parties and weaving epic selections into seamless mixes. I started in the bedroom at 15 with some of his dad’s records, got one of my own and was away. Next stop Palladium Niteclub at 18, and moved through all types of clubs and genres from hip hop to house to producing parties in the 2000s.

WHAT’S YOUR MEDIUM OF CHOICE – VINYL OR ELECTRONIC FILES? Vinyl is the go-to medium. It’s a tangible, tactile form of music to work with, a physical process to master and so long as you have Technic 1200’s to drop them on, relatively reliable! All mediums are acceptable though as each gig is very different. Recently at Electric Avenue we used vinyl, CDJs and a controller – always be prepared!

HOW DID YOUR MUSICAL PARTNERSHIP COME ABOUT? We’ve grown up in the same town, coming from different backgrounds with a mutual respect for one another’s skill and insights when it came to music and mixing.

WHAT DOES DIRTY CASH GET UP TO ON ANY GIVEN WEEKEND? Excellent company immersed in great music, food and beverages.

WHAT’S THE SECRET TO A KILLER SET? Finding the funk, whatever that means to you, mixing it with versions or dubs or remixes to get a feeling… a movement… then dropping it hard and loud on the night to find the flow!

WHAT THREE SONGS WILL WE NEVER HEAR IN ONE OF YOUR SETS? Tough call. We have mates that played after parties in the late 90s and had to play a worse tune than the last DJ back-to-backto-back. Time and a place!

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF DRINKING ON THE JOB? It can get the party started, and it can be the end of it too.

HOW DO YOU WRAP A SET? Throw in a song everyone can sing along to.

HOME GROUND

If the old saying ‘charity starts at home’ rings true for you, there’s a plethora of opportunities for you to get involved right on your doorstep. From one-off acts of kindness to long-term dedication to change, many hands make light work in your very own community.

Volunteering Canterbury (volcan.org.nz) has a membership of approximately 280 not-for-profits in the region and support them with recruitment of volunteers and training with volunteer management. One of the things they do is set up projects for businesses wanting to give back to the community. They also take the hassle out of finding a volunteering organisation by allowing you to search for suitable roles by category, location, and time commitment.

Group volunteering is available, so rally the troops and get out there!

Through Christchurch City Council (ccc.govt.nz), you can join a community group, help out at a working bee or don your best gardening gloves and join the folks at Avon Otakaro Forest Park, who primarily work in maintaining and restoring vegetation around the Red Zone.

If you want to stay indoors, Red Cross (redcross.org.nz) offers up volunteering options such as helping out with administration duties or helping to prep food for their Meals on Wheels programme.

Put your retail skills to use and man a Red Cross shop, or get your knitting needles and some wool and join their knitting groups, where they whip up garments of all shapes and sizes for those in need – a great way to socialise and perfect those knitting techniques!

student-run Student Volunteer Army (sva.org.nz) evolved from a small group of 200 into thousands of students, each making a significant contribution to communities most affected by the earthquakes. Don’t be put off by the fact that it is run by students – they welcome anyone and everyone who wants to contribute and volunteer!

Have a love for animals of all shapes and sizes? The SPCA (spcacanterbury.org.nz), are always on the hunt for volunteers to lend a hand at their many sites.

Volunteers can assist with maintenance and upkeep of animal enclosures, help with feeding and tending to the animals, assist at events that the SPCA may host, or help out at their Op Shop.

Get your sweat on and acquire some building skills with Habitat For Humanity (habitat.org.nz) where you can help construct a home or building for families or businesses in need. The option to volunteer in New Zealand or overseas is available.

Each division of Christchurch’s City Mission (citymission.org.nz) requires different skills, abilities and areas where you can volunteer in. You could help out at their food bank, clothing and furniture shops.

The Salvation Army (salvationarmy.org.nz) always welcomes volunteers to help out at their local stores, provide time and company for the elderly, and even help out with meals and delivery.

Organisations such as the Cancer Society (cancernz.org.nz), and the Breast Cancer Foundation (breastcancerfoundation.org. nz) make fundraising accessible to everyone. Each organisation has a fundraising element on their website, where you can submit and start fundraising initiatives with friends or community.

If you’re not up to starting one up yet, they have events on all the time that you could contribute to or volunteer for.

With an almost 10,000 strong volunteer community across the entirety of New Zealand, St John (stjohn.org.nz) allows volunteers to assist with various medical jobs where available, run and manage youth programme seminars, transport those who are in need of assistance to and from medical appointments, or lend an ear through their Caring Caller option, where you can help someone who just needs a chat.

If you have a love for the arts, we have something for you too. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra (cso.co.nz) is always on the lookout for volunteers to assist at events and coordinate groups of volunteer ushers, programme sellers, foyer hosts and general helpers at concerts, and CoCA (coca.org.nz) is run and managed by a volunteer team that manifests as curatorial interns, assistants and receptionists.

Flex your creative muscles and check out Gap Filler (gapfiller.org.nz), the talent behind several initiatives scattered around the city, including the epic life-sized Space Invaders installation on the exterior of the Vodafone Building in the CBD and various other projects. Volunteer jobs include supporting their Handy-Man with repairs or constructing new items for upcoming sites, being their very own ‘Shepherd’ and assisting their small team with giving tours to newcomers, or helping to take care of flora and fauna at a variety of their sites as one of their ‘GreenFingered Gods and Goddesses’.

Age Concern Canterbury (ageconcerncan.org.nz) Contribute a little of your time to ease the loneliness of the elderly. We love Age Concern for what they do for people over 65, promoting dignity, wellbeing, right and respect for this group that’s oft neglected. Become a Dignity Champion and volunteer in various capacities such as visiting and chatting with the elderly, driving them where they need to go or even host a social outing.

SPREADING THE LOVE ABROAD

The time is nigh to spring into action and roll up your sleeves. Bonus; by embarking on an eco tour you’ll be helping the planet’s fauna and satiate that travel bug at the same time.

Working Abroad (workingabroad.com) allows volunteers to join their marine conservation team in Costa Rica, with their Olive Ridley and Green Sea Turtle Programme. There are also various opportunities to teach English to schoolchildren in Laos, Brazil, India, Thailand and more.

Community building projects are aplenty, and most involve working at the grassroots level in rural villages. If conservation is your thing, check out their ecology and environmental projects.

Projects Abroad (projects-abroad.co.nz) offers up a variety of volunteering opportunities.

Working with endangered pandas in China is just one of many you can partake in – you can work alongside a team of people dedicated to the rescuing and breeding of pandas at Dujiangyan Panda Base in Southwest China.

Their teaching projects give you the opportunity to help students of all ages and backgrounds with conversational English.

Teaching locations include China, Costa Rica, Belize, Argentina and more. If building is your thing, they need volunteers in countries like Ghana, Jamaica and Nepal to build much needed community buildings, houses and even roads. Agricultural and farming projects will give you a chance to share your knowledge and skills in animal and plant husbandry.

Wildlife ACT (wildlifeact.com) is a prominent animal conservation organisation that predominantly works in two locations; South Africa and the Seychelles. Volunteers must be 18 years old to participate and programmes vary from two to four weeks. Volunteer programmes include Volunteer with Endangered Species, Volunteer with Leopards, Conserving Paradise and Leopard and Whale Survey. Volunteers have the chance to make a significant change to animal and land conservation through these programmes, and the life-changing effect on both volunteer and animals is phenomenal.

Dramedy The Leisure Seeker (Jun 21) has lined up some serious cinematic firepower to adapt the novel of the same name by Michael Zadoorian. Lily Allen is back for the first time since 2014’s Sheezus with No Shame, which sees the London singer-songwriter working through a few things: her divorce, substance abuse, motherhood, and what she has labelled a bit of an identity crisis after Sheezus: “I didn’t like the clothes I was wearing, the songs that made it as singles... like everything!” Consider this a much more personal record, then; sure enough, lead single ‘Trigger Bang’ (featuring rapper Giggs) is piano-tinged hip hop with that classic Lily Allen nonchalance that tackles growing up, the temptations of fame, and cocaine.

Completionists, take note: The Who’s 74-yearold former frontman releases his 9th solo album this month (Jun 1), and he’s nabbed old mate Pete Townshend for guitar on 7 of the 11 tracks as well. The album offers a mix of

self-penned tracks and songs from artists that have inspired him, including Nick Cave, Stevie Wonder, and Stephen Stills. There’s a story to the title track, too, which was recorded by Garnet Mimms in 1964 – the year that Daltrey, Townshend, John Entwistle and the infamous Keith Moon changed their name from The High Numbers to become The Who.

There’s been a lot of games press attention on the upcoming Vampyr (Jun 5, Win, PS4, XB1), due to some ambitious features the game is promising. Set in London during the Spanish Flu pandemic of 1918, the third-person action-adventure game sees players taking the role of Dr Jonathan Reid, a medical man struggling to reconcile his Hippocratic Oath and the welfare of the sick city in his care with his unwelcome new status as one of the bloodthirsty titular undead.

Reid roams a London full of potential victims, each with their own names, jobs, personal relationships, issues, relatives and friends; each death on the end of his fangs will send ripples through the game’s entire ecosystem, potentially losing entire city districts to the epidemic (no pressure!). Promising plenty of ambiguity, difficult moral choices, and lasting consequences (as well as some vampirepowered combat), Vampyr is looking like an intriguing title that’s an exercise in mood-setting. vampyr-game.com

Roast cauliflower soup with cuminmarinated halloumi and truffle oil. Emma Mettrick and Paul Howells of Twenty Seven Steps let us in on the secret of their seriously tasty and warming winter soup.

Hankering for a bowl of delicious goodness that’ll warm your heart right down to the cockles (you heard us!)? This soup bursts with the earthy flavours of halloumi and truffle oil, and is sure to chase away those autumn chills. And what a clever way to get the whole family upping their intake of the fabulous veggie that is cauliflower, which is fully in-season!

SHOPPING LIST

1 cauliflower 2 garlic cloves 2 large white onions 1 vegetable stock cube 250g butter 500ml full fat cream 500ml milk 1 block of halloumi 3 tbsp cumin Salt and white pepper

MAKING IT HAPPEN The first order of the day is to prepare the aromatics of the dish – the onions and garlic. This will set up the flavour base of the soup. Finely dice onions and garlic and set aside. Chop the cauliflower into small florets. Heat up a heavy-based saucepan on a low heat, and add butter. When the butter is melted, add diced onions and garlic and sauté lightly, letting them sweat a

little until soft, without turning brown.

Add cauliflower and let it cook on low heat, stirring around occasionally.

While that is cooking down, it’s time to marinate the halloumi. Slice the halloumi into 3 tablespoons of olive oil, a sliced clove of garlic and the cumin. Set aside. Check the cauliflower, stirring it around a little.

Once it is soft, crumble up the vegetable stock cube and add that in, together with cream and milk. Turn the heat up high and cook for about 5 minutes. Stir constantly to prevent it from burning and sticking to the pan.

Remove from heat and blend in a food processor or blender. It’s now time to cook the marinated halloumi on a char-griller or frying pan.

Plating up: Ladle the soup into bowls and arrange the halloumi on top.

Drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil and grate over some salt and pepper.

Serve hot.

The crisp golden pastry gives way with a satisfying crunch, making way for the intensely moreish and smoky moist meaty hit of the slow-cooked brisket filling. Slathered in the accompanying fiery prickle of a sublime sriracha mayonnaise, which has me reaching for the crisp seduction of my chilled glass of Greystone Barrel Fermented Sauvignon Blanc in the best possible way, 5th Street head chef/gastronomic genius Sam Stewart has transformed the simple wonton into a fine-dining flavour bomb.

The Smoked Brisket Wontons make up one-third of the tasty trifecta of small plates we’re starting with, and are joined by the equally rambunctious Karaage Fried Chicken (all lightly-coated crispy succulent chicken pieces served alongside a sassy wasabi mayonnaise) and the eye-widening delight of the Himalayan Salt Block Cured Fish. Epitomising culinary clever and showcasing an innate knowledge, and respect, of flavour profiles the latter sees supremely fresh slices of grouper served atop a chilled, pink marbled salt block garnished with micro greens and drizzled in a tangy basil vinaigrette that brilliantly plays the salty and acid profiles allowing the delicate flavours of the hero to soar.

Greeted by a verdant wall of plants tangled around a wrought iron stencil, offering glimpses into the lavish dining room, and the mega-watt charms of front of house legend and Maitre D’ Wynn Kerstens, we immediately know we’ve arrived somewhere undeniably and exoticly unique as soon as we open the door. Not surprising given its creators Chris Penny and Jonathan Spark previously transformed neighbouring Sunday school

into the coveted cafe hot spot that is Hello Sunday are behind the scorching new evening dining space. It’s a moodily lit and intimate affair seamlessly blending casual sophistication with understated elegance where a black raftered ceiling meets lush, velvety teal booth seating, bevel-edged mirrors join chandeliers and industrial lighting and a slick, dine-at bar offers views of the theatrics from the kitchen and bar teams working alongside each other all set to the funky chill of a 70s soundtrack.

We’re perusing the torturously succinct menu featuring Small, Medium and Large Plates where each dish sounds better than the last between sips of the bourbon-based potency of signature cocktail The 5th and refreshing citrus tang of gin sour El Gin Lady before calling on the expertise of Wynn. As

soon as the Lamb Tagine (Large Plate) is set down on the table, its piquant aroma of Middle Eastern deliciousness and towering display of lamb, lentils, heirloom carrots and chick peas informs us we’ve made the right decision. Its carefully nuanced construction sees the light gaminess of the succulent slow-roasted lamb marry with the earthy richness of a killer za’atar bringing a tangy kick courtesy of the liberal use of sumac and sweetness of the carrots all freshened up with a herbaceous labneh to create the perfect partners in crime with our brilliantly paired ruby-hued dark chocolate laced Claymore ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ Cabernet Sauvignon and silken charms of the Terra Sancta Estate Pinot Noir. Medium Plates of Brussels Sprout Slaw (fresh, fierce and studded with jewels of pomegranate arils) and Kombucha Pickled Pear (all mellowed pear flavours juxtaposed with the sharp creaminess of a blue cheese emulsion), it makes for a stunning banquet. Sated as we are, we’re unable to resist the allure of the Banoffee and Peanut Butter Pie and opt to split the dreamy, creamy, nutty banana-infused extravagance.

Crowned with vanilla bean ice cream and streaked with addictive salted caramel, it’s brilliant between sips of hot coffee and the apricot marmalade stickiness of the Hawkes Ridge Noble Viognier – and makes for the happiest of endings.

SCALE UP Cityscape talks with one of Christchurch’s most prolific street artists Joel Hart, as he takes on the city, one street canvas at a time.

WHICH MEDIUM DO YOU FIND MOST CHALLENGING/THERAPEUTIC/EASY TO WORK IN? I work with spray paint, ink and acrylics. I enjoy cutting stencils because I find this therapeutic. I have tried to use oils in the past as I found these challenging and they take WAY too long to dry.

WHICH ARTISTS INSPIRE YOU? Conor Harrington, Cyrcle, Logan Hicks, Willow.

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? Anywhere and everywhere, I use a lot of found imagery, text and texture in my work so I am always taking photos of old signs and any interesting things that I can use in my work.

WHAT’S THE FAVOURITE PIECE OF STREET ART THAT YOU’VE DONE? Probably my piece I did in New Brighton ‘From Stone’.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO STREET ART? I use a lot of stencil art in my work so going to a large scale suited my style of art. I love the challenge of going bigger and bigger and working out in the elements. Every mural has its different challenges so I love the fact that you are always learning and trying new techniques on big walls. It’s really rewarding to see a large scale piece when it is finished.

WHAT SORT OF PLANNING GOES INTO A LARGE-SCALE WALL-SIZED ARTWORK? With my style of work there is quite a bit of planning and preparation. A lot of it is getting the scale right and cutting hundreds of stencils.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WORKING ON ART IN THE STUDIO AND BEING OUT THERE ON THE STREETS? The advantage of working in the studio is you have everything you need, there is no wind or weather to contend with, but that’s part of the fun about doing street pieces.

WHAT’S IT BEEN LIKE TO BE A PART OF THE CITY’S BOOMING STREET ART SCENE POST-QUAKES? DO YOU THINK WE CAN KEEP IT GOING? I have enjoyed taking part in some of the street art in the ever changing city, I just love being a part of it and sharing some of my art in the community. I’m really excited to see where it goes in the future.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR YOUNGER SELF? Work hard, be nice and ask questions. Don’t worry about what other people think and just do what you love.

WHAT OR WHERE IS YOUR HAPPY PLACE? At the beach or in my studio.
