FIT TO GIVE Struggling to get properly committed to that fitness routine? Maybe what you need is a bit of good karma as motivation. Organised charity fitness offers plenty of pros; having a calendar date to build towards, taking the hard work of all the organisation out of your hands so you just have to show up, and the feel-good factor of helping a good cause – and with all the motivational benefits of group fitness besides. Events in the city are sprinkled throughout the year; keep an eye out for: The Pink Star Walk (November) An evening walk (bedecked in pink, see above) with both 5km and half-marathon options in support of the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. The Great Santa Run (December) This major fundraiser for KidsCan sees hundreds of runners dressed in Santa suits take off down city streets to support kids in need. Relay for Life (February) Walk throughout the night and raise funds to support the work of the Cancer Society. A Run To Remember (February) The quake memorial run on the Port Hills combines killer views with raising money for a different charity each year. City 2 Surf (March) The popular and long-running ‘burb-to-beach’ run offers the chance to become a ‘Heart Racer’ for the New Zealand Heart Foundation, as does the Jennian Homes Mother’s Day 5k (May) fun run/walk.
