This quarterly guide, which is offered as a special edition of the Pax River Press, contains information about recreational and educational opportunities from Morale, Welfare & Recreation (MWR), Fleet & Family Support Center (FFSC), Child & Youth Programs (CYP), MWR Recreational Lodging and more.

Most events and activities are open to all with base access; exceptions will be noted in the guide. Authorized patrons include:

Pax River Triathlon

Join MWR Fitness for this annual event! Participants will complete a sprint triathlon including a ½-mile swim, 13-mile bike ride and 5K run.

Patriotic Parade

Let your American spirit shine! Whether you bring your pooch dressed up as Uncle Sam, a red wagon with stars and stripes, a bicycle with streamers or a golf cart with balloons, the NRC Solomons Recreation team invites you to join them for a family-friendly walk from the Adventure Zone to the Riverside Pool.

MWR Aquatics operates an Indoor Pool at the Drill Hall and an Outdoor Pool on Cuddihy Road. The Indoor Pool is a six-lane, 25-yard facility that offers year-round ftness and leisure swimming for the entire family.

The Outdoor Pool is open seasonally, from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The Olympic-sized facility features a slide, diving board, snack area and kiddie pool.

Fitness Swim

Fitness swim is offered free of charge during designated times on a first-come, first-served basis. Multiple swimmers per lane will be allowed when capacity allows. Lap lanes may be reduced when other events (i.e. aquatic fitness classes, swim lessons, special events, recreational swim time) are scheduled. Circle swimming is encouraged when more than two lap swimmers are present in one lane.

Pax River Swim Lessons

Join American Red Cross aquatic instructors in private, semiprivate or group lessons. Please note that classes are subject to cancelation due to adverse weather conditions that pose a safety hazard to participants and staff (thunder/lightning/ sustained high winds/water clarity due to rain). Classes that are canceled by MWR will be made up at the next scheduled class.

Class Descriptions

Parent & Child (Ages 6 months-2 years) - A parent, or other participant at least 16 years of age, is required to be in the water with the child throughout each class. Classes incorporate games and activities to encourage a fun and safe swimming experience.

Preschool (Ages 3-5 years) - A parent, or other participant at least 16 years of age, is required to be in the water with the preschooler throughout each class. All Preschool-level classes incorporate games and activities to encourage a fun and safe swimming experience.

• STEP 1: For children who are being exposed to a swim class for the first time.

• STEP 2: For children who are continuing their swim training. Participants at this level have successfully completed the Preschool Step 1 swim course.

• STEP 3: For children who are continuing their swim training. Participants at this level have successfully completed the Preschool Step 2 swim course.

Level 1: Water Exploration This class is designed to help participants become familiar in the water, introduce basic rescue skills and teach water safety.

Level 2: Primary Skills In this class, participants will learn to float without support, recover to a standing position, learn basic locomotive skills and expand upon the basic rescue skills learned in Level 1.

Level 3: Stroke Readiness Building on the skills learned in Level 2, this class teaches the fundamentals of treading water and front and back crawl, and introduces elements of the backstroke and additional safety skills.

Level 4: Stroke Development This course helps swimmers develop confidence and increase endurance using familiar strokes and teaches the breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly (dolphin kick). It also focuses on treading water as a safety skill.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement In addition to teaching stroke coordination and refinement, this level also introduces swimmers to advanced safety skills, open turns, feet-first surface and poolside dive techniques.

The West Basin Marina is a year-round facility offering pier and floating slips with water and electrical hookups. There is a pump-out station and a bathhouse with showers and laundry. The marina also offers a boat ramp, dry storage and kayak, canoe and SUP rentals.

Slips will be assigned for annual occupancy as available through the Marina Office. Pool Parties

There’s no party quite like a pool party! Riverside Aquatics Complex is available for private pool parties from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day and all weekends in September after normal operating hours. Pool parties are limited to 2 hours and will be permitted only outside of regular pool operating hours on Tuesdays through Sundays for military and DoD patrons and their guests.

Reservations are required and must receive approval from the Aquatics Manager before the reservation can be confirmed. Reservations are accepted by calling the Administrative Office at 410-326-6747. Reservations also may be made directly at the Aquatics Complex starting Memorial Day weekend. Please note that a guest list is required 14 days prior to the event.

• 2-hour party (75 people, 3 lifeguards): $225 all eligible sponsors

• Extra hour: $100

• Extra 20 people (1 lifeguard): $50

Riverside Refreshments

• Memorial Weekend-Labor Day Weekend

Riverside Refreshments is conveniently located near NRC Solomons recreational facilities and is accessible from both Lighthouse Park and the Riverside Pool deck. Please note that Riverside Refreshments is a 100% cashless facility.

• Snacks Fresh popped popcorn, variety of UTZ brand chips, candy, variety of prepackaged ice cream treats

Facility Notes

Patrons 17 years of age and under are required to pass a swim test before they use the dive pool or slide. Upon completion of the swim test, the patron will be required to wear a wristband.

Children 9 years of age and under must be accompanied by an eligible adult patron 18 years or older. Children 10-15 years of age must be accompanied by an eligible patron 16 years of age or older. Patrons 16 years of age and older may use the pool unaccompanied.

Lifeguards are on duty during regular pool operating hours. U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation devices (PFDs) are permitted. A limited number of PFDs are available for use at no charge. Anyone wearing a PFD must have an adult within arm’s reach at all times.

Ten-minute swim breaks are held every hour in weather 90 degrees or hotter.

Eating is permitted in designated areas, but no alcohol or glass containers are allowed.

Join American Red Cross aquatic instructors in private one-on-one or group lessons. Please note that classes are subject to cancelation due to adverse weather conditions

Class Descriptions

Baby & Me (Ages 6 months-2 years) - A parent, or other participant at least 16 years of age, is required to be in the water with the child throughout each class. Classes incorporate games and activities to encourage a fun and safe swimming experience.

Preschool (Ages 3-5 years) - A parent, or other participant at least 16 years of age, is required to be in the water with the preschooler throughout each class. All Preschool-level classes incorporate games and activities to encourage a fun and safe swimming experience.

• STEP 1: For children who are being exposed to a swim class for the first time.

• STEP 2: For children who are continuing their swim training. Participants at this level have successfully completed the Preschool Step 1 swim course.

• STEP 3: For children who are continuing their swim training. Participants at this level have successfully completed the Preschool Step 2 swim course.

Level 1: Water Exploration - This class is designed to help participants become familiar in the water, introduce basic rescue skills and teach water safety.

Level 2: Primary Skills - In this class, participants will learn to float without support, recover to a standing position, learn basic locomotive skills and expand upon the basic rescue skills learned in Level 1.

Level 3: Stroke Readiness - Building on the skills learned in Level 2, this class teaches the fundamentals of treading water and front and back crawl, and introduces elements of the backstroke and additional safety skills.

Level 4: Stroke Development - This course helps swimmers develop confidence and increase endurance using familiar strokes and teaches the breaststroke, sidestroke and butterfly (dolphin kick). It also focuses on treading water as a safety skill.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement - In addition to teaching stroke coordination and refinement, this level also introduces swimmers to advanced safety skills, open turns, feet-first surface and poolside dive techniques.

Level 6: Fitness and Guard Start - Level 6 has two focus areas taught based on the student’s interest. FITNESS focuses on polishing stroke techniques so the student is able to swim with ease, power and efficiency. Guard Start is for students interested in becoming a lifeguard at the age of 15.

Riverside Beach

• Memorial Weekend-Aug. 18

• Daily 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

• Aug. 19 - Labor Day

• Saturday & Sunday 11 a.m.-7 p.m.

Closed Columbus Day through Memorial Day

Riverside Beach is located just north of the Riverside Aquatics Complex and offers 400 feet of Patuxent River shoreline and sandy beaches. Picnic tables and lounge chairs are available, and parking is conveniently located across the street.

Please note that Riverside Beach is the only designated river swimming area on NRC Solomons and that swimming is permitted in the designated swimming area when lifeguards are on duty. It is patrolled daily from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. and will be secured during destructive weather.

Pets are not permitted on the designated swimming beach but are allowed on the beach area that stretches from Club 9 to Sunset Pier. Pets must be on a leash and registered with the Lodging Office.

Boat Rentals

• Memorial Weekend-Aug. 18

• 12-6 p.m. (no rentals on Mondays)

• Aug. 19 - Labor Day

• Saturday & Sunday 12-6 p.m.

Kayaks, stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) and Corcls (small round boats perfect for kids or anyone who finds kayaks and paddleboards intimidating or difficult) are available for rent at the Riverside Pool!

• $10 per ½ hour

• $15 per hour

Please note that rental equipment use is limited to the Riverside Beach swimming coves and 250 feet off the shoreline. Rental times are subject to cancelation due to water and weather conditions. All participants must wear the provided USCG PFD while using equipment.

Equipment is available for ages 5+ only. Children ages 6-10 may utilize a boat upon successful completion of the CNIC SPLASH swim test and must be supervised by an adult at all times. Children ages 10-15 may utilize equipment upon passing the CNIC SPLASH swim test and completion of rental agreement by an authorized adult.

Adventure Zone / Camp Store / Point Patience Marina

Seasonal Leisure Passes are available at the Adventure Zone during normal operating hours. All in-season lodging reservations at NRC Solomons also include Leisure Passes, which grant unlimited admission to recreational facilities and programs. They’re the ideal way to spend the day and are valid for:

Activity Passes are available for patrons who wish to use only one recreational facility. Activity Passes may be purchased for the Sunset Pier, Riverside Aquatics Complex and for most Adventure Zone programs.

Club 9

Club 9 is equipped with a full kitchen, exterior space to accommodate outdoor activities and amenities such as indoor restrooms and central air and heat. It is located on the waterfront and has a large deck overlooking the Patuxent River. Club 9 is open from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.

• Monday-Thursday $200 in season, $130 off season

• Friday-Sunday & Holidays $225 in season, $160 off season
