Recientemente tuve la oportunidad de visitar junto a mi familia los países africanos de Kenya y Tanzania, donde se encuentran las planicies fértiles del Serengueti, en las cuales realicé junto a mi familia una aventura de pesca y una exploración profunda a los lugares más intrincados de África, pocos frecuentados por extranjeros.
Sin dudas, fue un arriesgado safari a las regiones más profundas de Tanzania y Kenya, en pleno corazón del continente africano, donde hace veinte millones de años, las placas tectónicas en el Este de África empezaron a separarse, lo que originó la formación de grandes volcanes como el Kilimanyaro y el Ngorongoro, entre otros muchos existentes en esa zona casi olvidada del mundo. mente, originando la proliferación y el desarrollo de numerosas especies de animales herbívoros y también de muchos depredadores carnívoros. Debido a las favorables condiciones climáticas de esas planicies, en las cuales llueve con frecuencia por la confluencia de los vientos
alisios del desierto y la brisa proveniente del mar, habitan también algunas tribus nómadas y pastorales dedicadas a la crianza de ganando vacuno. A partir de ahora y en las próximas ediciones, ofreceremos de forma exclusiva a nuestros lectores una serie de artículos interesantes que muestran la vida del Serengueti y sus habitantes, en los cuales publicaremos imágenes verdaderamente impactantes, pintorescas y, en algunos casos, algo desgarradoras que muestran la cruda realidad de quienes luchan por sobrevivir en un territorio abrupto y hostil, donde la inteligencia del ser hu-
mano se sobrepone ante la fuerza descomunal de animales voraces, para juntos poder coexistir en un relación misteriosa y enigmática, algo incompresible para el mundo civilizado. Nos complace en este artículo, mostrarles testimonio gráfico de mi primer viaje de exploración a África Ruge.

Nació en la Habana, Cuba, en 1946. En 1960 llegó a Miami, Estados Unidos de América, ciudad en la cual creció y estudió medicina. Al graduarse ejerció durante muchos años como especialista en medicina de emergencia. Durante toda su vida Martin ha sido un pescador profesional. En los pasados veinte años ha acumulado más de trescientos récords mundiales de pesca, entre los que incluyen 200 con equipo de mosca. Es miembro de honor de la IFGA (International Game Fish Association Fishing Hall of Fame& Museum) que le otorgó un Life Time Achievement Award en el 2004. El Dr. Aróstegui es también un profesional, especializado en la fotografía de pesca y la naturaleza. En la actualidad es Director de Viajes y Exploraciones de nuestra revista Sol y Mar magazine, por lo cual viaja constantemente a distintas regiones del mundo para captar con su lente las más bellas imágenes que ojos humanos hayan podido ver.
Pat Ford
Fotógrafo de Pesca Deportiva y prominente abogado de litigio en las Cortes de la Florida Pat Ford es conocido como el mejor fotógrafo de pesca deportiva en Estados Unidos de América. Nació en la ciudad de Nueva York (creció en New Jersey). Estudió en la Universidad de Notre Dame en 1961, donde obtuvo su maestría en comunicaciones. En 1965 estudió en la Escuela de Leyes de la universidad de Columbia. Cuando estudiaba en la universidad pudo financiar su propia educación tomando fotografías de deportes universitarios. Posteriormente ejerció en el NAVY como abogado y juez. Aprendió a pescar en Cayo Hueso. En 1972 fue nombrado master de pesca al competir en el “Metropolitan Fishing Tournament” en Miami. Durante su juventud comenzó a pescar en el sur de la Florida. Actualmente es un prominente abogado de litigio en las Cortes de la Florida, además de un fotógrafo apasionado por la pesca. Pat Ford ha viajado intensamente a través del mundo y obtenido 32 récords mundiales de pesca en diversos torneos celebrados por la IGFA, entre los más sobresalientes: el Fly Rod World Récords al capturar un tiger shark (tiburón tigre) en Florida Bay de 196 libras y un trigerfish (sobaco) en Zambia, África, de 14.5 libras. Su cámara preferida ahora es una Canon (Mark III), en la cual usa los últimos lentes de alta calidad de 70 a 200 y de 100 a 400 mms. Recientemente cubrimos el Torneo Presidencial de Centro América (The Presidential Challenge of Central America) en Villas Playa Samara, Costa Rica, en el cual participaron los más prestigiosos equipos de pesca deportiva del mundo, como por ejemplo el equipo de la IGFA (Asociación Internacional de la Pesca Deportiva), integrado por Rob Kramer, Presidente de dicha asociación, además de Roy W. Cronacher JR. (Nuevo miembro de la Junta Directiva de la IGFA) y un servidor: el Dr. Martin Aróstegui, que ostenta numerosos records
mundiales de pesca. Este campeonato se celebra todos los años con el propósito de divulgar la preservación y conservación de todas las especies de agujas en la región del Pacífico de América Central. La regla fundamental de este torneo es liberar a todas las agujas, después de ser capturadas. Este punto es de estricto cumplimiento. Los pescadores representaron los países de Venezuela, Estados Unidos, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Islas Vírgenes y la República Dominicana. Luego de tres días intensos, la embarcación estadounidense “Big Oh “, capitaneada por Ronnie Fields e integrada por Gray Ingram,Ben Horning, Dave Fields y Jorge Muro, se coronó como campeona del Torneo Cap Cana International Billfish Shoot Out 2010, que con un éxito rotundo se celebró por primera vez en la Marina de Cap Cana. Los integrantes de esta embarcación obtuvieron la victoria al liberar la mayor cantidad de agujas por equipo en el certamen, con un total de 2 agujas azules, las cuales son las de mayor puntuación y 12 agujas blancas, logrando así sumar 3,540 puntos. El segundo lugar en la categoría de mejor embarcación, lo ocupó la también procedente de Estados Unidos, “Black Gold” comandada por Keith Bokemhagem e integrada por Harry Sargeant, Mike McCarthy y Matthew Mechior, quienes acumularon un total de 3,030 puntos, seguida en el tercer lugar con 2,100 puntos por la embarcación “Peje” de Puerto Rico, capitaneada por Juan García, Carlos García y Emilio Fernández. Desde el inicio de la justa estas tres embarcaciones se mantuvieron en los primeros lugares, con puntuaciones muy cercanas unas de otras. Durante este torneo de modalidad “catch and release” se liberaron un total de 91 agujas, donde el clima estuvo favorable y la pesca a favor de los participantes. Categoría Mejor Pescador con 1,890 puntos a bordo de la lancha ”Peje”, el boricua Carlos García logró la victoria en la categoría individual como Mejor Pescador, liberando 9 agujas blancas. Asimismo, de la embarcación ”Vintage”, Jimmy Fields arribó al segundo lugar con 1,420 puntos y el dominicano Enrique Ricart, de la lancha “Caramba” ocupó el tercer lugar con
1,350 puntos. Esta justa se realizó de manera exitosa durante 15 años en el puerto de La Guaira, Venezuela, y a partir de este año, Cap Cana en la República Dominicana es la nueva sede de este importante torneo, por ser un lugar que cuenta con una gran abundancia de peces de pico en sus costas, además de poseer una de las mejores marinas en todo el Caribe, buena hotelería y fabulosa hospitalidad para el visitante. Parte de los fondos recaudados en este evento serán donados a REEL LIFE ADVENTURES, organización benéfica dedicada a varias obras de caridad en República Dominicana.

Gulf Wrecks with Governor Crist By Pat Ford
“What are you doing Sunday?” was a pretty interesting question since it came from Capt. Rick Murphy. I get that call now and then and it always means that something good is about to happen on the water - somewhere. My standard reply is “nothing” and this time was no exception. Whatever Murphy has planned, I want to be in on it. Rick explained that Governor Charlie Crist was in the Keys for a few days fishing. He had a half day open Sunday morning and he was going to join Rick and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Chairman, Rodney Baretto, for a trip to the shallow Gulf wrecks with Capt Billy Harbaugh. They were going to film a “Sportsman’s Adventure” show and there would be a camera boat so there was plenty of room for me to tag along for some fishing and photography. I was definitely “in” and we planned to meet at Caribe Boat Center in Islamorada at 7 am, Sunday morning.
First of all, fishing the shallow Gulf wrecks north of Florida Bay is one of my favorite things to do. As you leave the flats between Flamingo and Marathon the bottom drops off very gradually. The bottom itself is pretty much flat sand and anything that rises up even a few feet puts a glitch in the current that attracts fish. Sunken ships are nice but discarded lobster traps, a pile of rocks, or just plain debris works just as well in a vast area of “nothing”. Billy Harbough has been fishing the Gulf for years and has literally dozens of “secret” spots, all of which hold fish. During a days fishing with Bill, its not unusual to hit half a dozen wrecks that very few people have ever fished. If conditions are right, you can catch permit, cobia, snapper, barracuda, snook, redfish, jacks, grouper, mackerel, trout, goliath grouper and sometimes even tarpon. Everything that swims likes to hang out on wrecks, but there are two problems: first of all, whatever you hook will head right back to the wreck to try to cut your line. Second, if the fish isn’t big enough to make all the way back to the wreck, a goliath grouper will probably eat it. Accordingly, the catch ratio sometimes
doesn’t match up to the excitement levels but shallow wreck fishing is never dull. In addition, Governor Crist was the only Governor in recent years that I’d voted for who had actually won the election, so this was shaping up as a great trip... all we needed was for the weather to cooperate. When its calm the permit, barracuda and cobia that hang out of the wrecks float to the surface and cruise around. Billy has seen days when a hundred spike tails will be sticking out of the water and pods of cobia will literally swim right up to the boat. A calm day is perfect for sight fishing and fly casting. However, if there’s wind, the water muddies up quickly, visibility drops to zero, and most of the fish hug the bottom. Since most of these wrecks are in less than 25 feet of water, sometimes a two foot chop on the surface is all it takes to shut things down.

Rodney Barreto was appointed to the FF&WCC in 2001 by Gov Jeb Bush and reappointed by Governor Crist in 2007. Presently serving his fourth term as chairman of the Commission, Rodney is a frequent guest on Rick Murphy’s “Sportsman’s Adventures” TV show, an ardent fisherman. Rodney had fished the Gulf wrecks before, in all kind of weather, so he was pumped.

First of all, the water wouldn’t be that rough but it was probably going to be a bit stirred up by the wind. They’d anchor the boat up current from the wreck and use block chum and pilchers to get the residents attention. Heavy action spinning rods with 20 or 30 lb braid line would be fitted with several feet of 50 lb mono leader and a 3/4 oz jig and shrimp/pilcher combination. The jig should be cast up to or to the side of the wreck, but not into it, and then bounced along the bottom. Most of the fish were probably going to be within 4 or 5 feet of the sand and getting into their feeding zone was essential. Bait was pretty much necessary since visibility was going to be pretty limited. A really heavy stand-up conventional rig would be used to try and drag a big cobia or grouper out of the wreck. The bait of choice for that was a whole mullet with a 2 oz sinker. Rick quietly pointed out to the Governor that if the “big rod” got a hit, he should make sure Rodney got to it first. Governor Crist had been fishing long enough to understand Rick’s meaning and agreed completely. There are times when fishing becomes more work than fun and pulling on a 200 to 300 lb goliath grouper is one of them. The Gov was wisely going to stick to the “sport” fish. The goliath grouper, formerly known as “jewfish”, has quite a history. They grow to over 700 pounds and are particularly fond of markers, wrecks, ledges, and holes. They have no natural enemies, other than big sharks and bigger goliath groupers, but in the past their lack of fear made them easy marks for divers with a “bang stick”. In fact jewfish were so easy to catch on hand lines and ultra heavy tackle that the species was nearly wiped out in the mid 80’s. Then in 1990 state and federal legislation was
passed declaring the goliath grouper to be a protected species, totally closed to harvest or possession. Now, eighteen years later, goliath grouper have come back, big time they are everywhere from mangrove shorelines to deep Atlantic wrecks, but nowhere are they more abundant than around the shallow wrecks in the Gulf. When the water is clear you can literally see them hovering around the structure. If you hook a snapper or a jack, odds are a goliath is going to eat it. Billy Harbough has seen 30 pound permit consumed by goliaths that weighed over 400 pounds. The long and the short of it is that today the goliath grouper in the Gulf are so abundant that is next to impossible at times to land a fish in their zip code. As we moved past the last of the shallow banks, the water depth dropped, the seas increased, and the Gulf began to get pretty murky. Billy’s GPS brought us directly to his selected wreck and before long we were bobbling up and down at anchor in a pretty stiff wind. Billy cast out the “monster” rod and told Rodney to keep an eye on it, while everyone used the lighter
spinning rods to cast the baited jigs. As the frozen block of chum began to work its magic, we could see baitfish appear behind the boat in the slick. On about his third cast Governor Crist hooked up. One of the fun things about wreck fishing is that you never what you are going to come up with. Gov. Crist’s first victim turned out to be a small cobia that was followed to the boat by two or three friends. Rick caught a small jack, Rodney caught a small goliath, Rick caught a mackerel and then Gov. Crist hooked into a nice sized sea trout. The action was fast and furious for about an hour until the big boys showed up. Rick was the first to have his catch suddenly stop fighting, turn and slowly swim back to the wreck, promptly cutting him off. The big goliaths had found us. We lost a half dozen fish to some unseen behemoths, before the big rod bent double. As planned Rodney pulled it out of the rod holder and went to work. Rodney is a big man and a former Miami police officer who has been fishing all his life, yet he was being dragged to the back of the boat without mercy as his opponent headed towards the wreck. Rodney leaned back on the standup rod and clamped his hand over the spool. If the goliath was going to get to the wreck it was going to have to snap 80 lb power pro without the aide of barnacles. At first the tug of war was a standoff, but the line held and the fish turned. Once away from the wreck, it wasn’t hard for Rodney to pump it to the surface. Everyone was amazed to see that this goliath was not much more than a hundred pounds. Those things sure are tough! An interesting point about goliath grouper is that because they are totally protected anglers are not allowed to take them into the boat even for a photo. All goliaths must be released in the water by either removing the
hook or cutting the line. Bringing a goliath into the boat for any reason, even though its going to be released, is a criminal offense that carries a jail time penalty. The marine patrol officers take these regulations very seriously. So don’t expect to see a photo of anyone holding up a goliath in the near future. The good news is that the goliaths are doing so well that the regulations may be eased a bit in the near future. Gov. Crist caught a nice cobia, several small grouper and a few more trout, jacks, mackerel, when suddenly it was time to head back in. For two hours we’d had non-stop action and everyone had forgotten that we had time restraints. The Governor had to get back to Tallahassee for a budget meeting but for him, squeezing in an extra a half day’s fishing was just something he had to do. When your Governor - you don’t get too many days off, and two hours of fun is a lot better than none. A short trip to a shallow Gulf wreck was just perfect. It always is!

La ruta de los galeones vibró en el Corralito de Piedra. Durante cinco días cartageneros, turistas nacionales y extranjeros desbordaron los diferentes muelles de la ciudad para conocer de cerca a estos navíos llenos de historias. Diez naves y
cinco buques de guerra deleitaron a los presentes en un encuentro único con las velas y el mar. De comienzo a fin el público respondió masivamente al Sail 2010. Desde que los veleros arribaron a este puerto del Caribe junto a sus tripulaciones, se encontraron con miles de personas ansiosas por entrar a conocer estos reyes del mar. Fue un espectáculo sin precedentes que logró reunir a diez veleros en Cartagena de Indias. Por su parte, Luis Ernesto Araújo Rumié, Presidente Ejecutivo de la Corporación Turismo Cartagena de Indias manifestó que con este tipo de eventos no sólo gana Cartagena, sino el país en general, donde la imagen de Colombia se muestra de forma positiva en el exterior. De acuerdo a reportes proporcionados por la Armada Nacional y cada una de las entidades y empresas que conforman la organización del SAIL CARTAGENA DE INDIAS 2010, se informó que este encuentro internacional de veleros logró la histórica cifra de 150 mil visitantes.

Disminuirán los impuestos de las Propiedades Comerciales situadas frente al mar en el Estado de la Florida El Representante Estatal Julio Robaina pasó recientemente una ley para proteger las propiedades frente al mar y bajarle los impuestos: “Hace dos años empezamos a trabajar en esta propuesta de ley -comienza explicando el Representante Estatal Julio Robaina, Distrito 117- con un grupo de ciudadanos para traer a la boleta esta Enmienda # 6, la cual incluye a los negocios situados en áreas aledañas al mar como talleres de reparaciones de barcos, restaurantes de pescados y mariscos, los cuales se benefician a partir de ahora con esta gran disminución de impuestos sobre su propiedad. Muchos de estos negocios estaban cerrando sus puertas. Esto ya se solucionó. De ahora en adelante, el tasador tiene que tasar las propiedades comerciales por el uso corriente de la misma y no por lo que pueda representar para el futuro. Esto significa una disminución de miles de dólares en impuestos para esos negocios que están frente al mar. Esta ley es a nivel Estatal y aplica solamente a las propiedades comerciales, que se encuentran dentro del Estado de la Florida.”

NO TIME FOR PARTY Bob Stearns was born 12 Oct 1935 in Wilmington, NC, and received his bachelor’s degree in Meteorology from Florida State University in 1958. Afterward he spent six years on active duty in the U.S, Navy as a weather officer, which included hurricane forecasting duties while stationed in Hawaii and Miami, FL. From 1965 through 1973 he was a Research Associate at the University of Miami School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences, participating for four years in hurricane research projects (frequently flying aboard hurricane hunter aircraft) and later in biological studies of Biscayne Bay involving the impact of a nuclear power plant. He started writing for fishing and boating magazines regularly in 1969, and became a full-time magazine writer/photographer and consultant to the fishing/boating industry in 1973. To date he has published over 2,000 feature articles and columns in many popular national magazines, including BOATING, SEA, YACHTING, MOTOR BOATING & SAILING, RUDDER, MOTORBOAT, FIELD & STREAM, OUTDOOR LIFE, SPORTS AFIELD, FISHING WORLD, SALTWATER SPORTSMAN, SMALL BOAT JOURNAL, SALTWATER FLY FISHING, BOAT DIGEST, CENTER CONSOLE ANGLER, and many others. NO TIME FOR A PARTY By Bob Stearns
It seems customary in many parts of the southeastern U.S., Caribbean, and Central America to have a party when a hurricane is coming ashore. But these so-called "hurricane parties" are not only impractical, they are downright unsafe. Here's why. From the beginning of recorded history severe hurricanes have proved over and over again to be the single most
catastrophic event nature has thus far sent our way. Worse than tornadoes (which can be stronger but are far smaller and much more short-lived); even worse than tidal waves (tsunamis), earthquakes, or volcanic eruptions. Here are a few examples of just how deadly these tropical storms can be. In May 2008 Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Nargis in the Bay of Bengal came ashore in Myanmar with winds of over 160 mph. It claimed over 140,000 lives, primarily through lowland storm surge flooding. And in 1970 an extremely severe tropical cyclone slammed into the lowlands of East Pakistan (now known as Bangladesh), killing over 500,000 people! Geography can be a major contributing feature: low-lying shorelines with a high human population (as in parts of the western Atlantic and Caribbean) are therefore exceedingly vulnerable to storm surges. Water (flooding and storm surges) kills far more people and causes far more damage than the strongest winds. Hurricane Katrina (2005) in New Or-
leans is a prime example of the terrible delayed flood damage that can follow a major hurricane. In 2005 Hurricane Wilma crossed South Florida as
a Category 3 with 125 mph winds; the total damage was over $20 billon, yet there were only 22 U.S. deaths attributed to Wilma. Everyone knew it was coming and took that time to prepare. The Bottom Line So, if you live within 100 miles of the Atlantic, Caribbean, or Gulf of Mexico coast, you are very much at risk when a major hurricane comes ashore in your area. The closer to the coast, the greater the risk. Being properly prepared offers your best chance of survival, as well as the best way to protect your property - which in turn enhances your survival. And that's just what my book THE HOMEOWNER'S HURRICANE HANDBOOK is all about.

sentante Oficial de la IGFA) fueron invitados por el Comodoro Escrich a ofrecer una conferencia especial sobre el uso de anzuelos circulares necesarios para la conservaci贸n de agujas y casteros (peces de pico) en el Club N谩utico Internacional Marina Hemingway
de Cuba. Esta conferencia se realiz贸 al inicio del torneo de la pesca de la aguja Ernest Hemingway celebrado recientemente en la Habana. Los conferencistas de la IGFA tuvieron la oportunidad de pescar en las aguas cubanas un d铆a antes que comenzara el torneo
de pesca para enseñar en la práctica el uso de los anzuelos circulares a las distintas tripulaciones participantes, quienes reconocieron los conceptos de este novedoso método de pesca, el cual fue aceptado por todas las tripulaciones de pescadores. Durante la conferencia, el Presidente de la IGFA Rob Kramer otorgó al Comodoro Escrich una proclama de reconocimiento por sus esfuerzos en la preservación de los peces de pico.

“Cada día hacemos algo para mejorar la ciudad” Alcalde Tomás Regalado

Presidente y Editor de Sol y Mar Magazine El Alcalde de la Ciudad de Miami Tomás Regalado se refiere a importantes temas de interés para nuestra comunidad. ¿Cómo observa el desarrollo de la industria marina de la Ciudad de Miami en relación con las propiedades frente al mar? “La pasada administración tomó la posición de que el río Miami (cuyas tres cuartas partes están dentro de la Ciudad de Miami) no era un río de uso industrial, sino para tener propiedades de viviendas multifamiliares, es decir edificios de condominios. Comen-
zaron a rezonificar las propiedades que antiguamente eran industriales para convertirlas en comerciales, de manera de poder construir residencias y comercios. Esto provocó una demanda de la industria del río contra la ciudad de Miami, específicamente por tres rezonificaciones que se hicieron en propiedades que eran industriales. Desde el momento en que nosotros llegamos a la alcaldía, decidimos cambiar totalmente esa filosofía. Tomamos varios pasos: le pedimos a la comisión (y así lo hizo unánimemente) que la ciudad retirara la demanda contra la industria marina del río, después que se cambiara el plan general de zonificación
y el plan maestro de la ciudad de Miami, y colocar en los documentos la palabra puerto en el río de Miami, lo cual se notificó al departamento de planificación de Tallahassee. La palabra puerto era importante introducirla, porque de eso dependía que la industria marina del río recibiera ayuda y seguridad nacional. En estos momentos estamos a punto de llegar a un acuerdo fuera de Corte para retirar esta demanda con la industria marina del río. Esto será importante, porque
hay varias industrias que habían decidido mudarse del río o esperar para hacer nuevas inversiones. Y a partir de este momento están reconsiderando esa posición. El río es una industria que genera miles de empleos de cargas, servicios.” ¿Cuál es su posición en cuanto a las nuevas regulaciones de pesca? “La pesca se está viendo afectada por las regulaciones federales que están yendo más allá de las protecciones a las especies marinas.
Recientemente la congresista Ileana Ros Lehtinen se reunió con 40 representantes de pescadores de la ciudad de Miami y de los cayos, quienes le plantearon a la congresista los serios problemas que tienen. Dos de ellos habían tenido que cerrar sus negocios, a lo cual si le añadimos ahora la mancha de petróleo, la industria de la pesca tendrá serios problemas. La única forma que la pesca tenga la posibilidad de sobrevivir y florecer es que el gobierno federal elimine muchas de las restricciones administrativas que se han impuesto o que se planean imponer. Lamenta-
blemente ni la Ciudad de Miami, ni el Estado tienen autoridad sobre el mar. Por eso trabajamos con la congresista Ros Lehtinen para lograr un apoyo en el Congreso.” ¿En que medida está preparada la ciudad de Miami para afrontar el desastre ecológico originado por el derrame de petróleo en el Golfo de México? “El senador Bill Nelson ha creado una fuerza de tarea para enfrentar esa situación. Sabemos que el gobierno federal apoyará a nuestra
ciudad en caso de que tengamos este desastre ecológico. La bendición de Miami como ciudad son sus costas, parques y playas, además de Virginia Key, propiedad de la Ciudad de Miami. Si eso sucediera seriamos afectados severamente por esa mancha de petróleo.” ¿Cómo percibe el desarrollo de las propiedades frente al mar? “Estamos a punto de comenzar el proceso de crear en una parte del río, que es propiedad de la Ciudad de
Miami, una Villa de pescadores, como Fisherman World en San Francisco y otras ciudades que dan al mar con una serie de restaurantes y pequeños comercios. Estamos renovando el permiso que la Ciudad perdió por negligencia hace cuatro años, para poder ofrecer más espacios disponibles y traer más yates al río. La otra propiedad que está en el agua: el Marine Stadium, considerado una joya arquitectónica por al Asociación de Monumentos Mundiales fue incluido en la lista de los diez monumentos arquitectónicos que se encuentran en peligro de desaparecer en el mundo. Por eso ya hemos iniciado el proceso de renovación del Marine Stadium. Parale-
lamente estamos haciendo una renovación intensa al Rusty Pelican y la marina Rickenbaker que son propiedades de la Ciudad de Miami.” Referente al turismo, el alcalde Regalado comenta: “Estamos tratando de incentivar el turismo, promocionando la Ciudad de Miami. Otro aspecto es la industria del cine. Hemos logrado traer frente al ayuntamiento la quinta filmación de una serie que se está trasmitiendo en decenas de países del mundo. Tenemos otras dos nuevas propuestas de programas para hacer filmaciones en Miami. De esa manera nuestros
hoteles se benefician al brindar alojamiento a todas esas personas que vienen a trabajar. Estamos entrevistándonos con Cirque du Soleil y Cavaglia para encontrar una sede permanente para ellos. Ya se están firmando los documentos para la construcción de un helipuerto en Watson Island, exclusivamente para helicópteros que servirá para promocionar el turismo en todo el condado Miami Dade, el cual estará funcionando en menos de un año. Miami es la capital de los cruceros del mundo. No hay otro puerto que reciba y despache tres millones de turistas al año como Miami.”
¿Existe interés por parte de inversionistas extranjeros en adquirir propiedades frente al mar en Miami? “Todavía hay un inventarios de condominios frente al mar que no se han vendido. Pero al mismo tiempo vemos a empresas extranjeras comprar bloques de diez y quince apartamentos para inversión. Aunque
se decía que hacía falta 53 meses para salir del inventario de condominios vacios de la ciudad de Miami, yo creo eso se logrará mucho antes. Los desarrolladores están vendiendo los condominios a la tercera parte por debajo del precio de costo original. Hay muchas unidades en foreclosure en el Down Town, cerca del mar. A los compradores se les ofrecen grandes descuentos. Miami es una ciudad mágica extraordinaria. Por eso cada día hacemos algo para mejorarla.”

Carlos Hechavarria Jr., de veinte años de edad, residente de Miami, Florida y estudiante de Palm Beach Atlantic University, capturó junto a sus amigos Modesto Espinosa y Michael Espinosa más de 3,000 libras de calamares gigantes en las aguas de Cortez, bahía de los Angeles, México, lo que constituye una pesca de calamares gigantes realmente insólita.
