Marine Protected Area Improves Fishing in Everglades National Park By Dr. Martín Aróstegui Twenty years ago, Snake Bight was one of the best fishing areas in Everglades National Park. The shallow waters of the area had a lot of redfish, snook, tarpon and many other fish species. I went fishing there frequently. The development of shallow draft boats changed things in a negative way. Shallow draft boats can run at full speed in eight inches of water. Once these boats became popular, fishermen could run through the shallow waters of the bight at full speed looking for fish. Once the fish were located the fishermen would shut down their engines and start fishing. It didn’t take long before the fish left the area and did not return. The shallow draft boats also caused a lot of damage to the sea grass and bottom of the area.


Approximately three years ago, the Park scientists made the Snake Bight area a Marine Protected Area where boats were only allowed in by using push poles or small electric motors that would not scare the fish or cause damage to the bottom. Recently I had the opportunity to fish Snake Bight with my good friend Jeff Harkavy and guide Richard Black. We had a great day of fishing; we caught many redfish and snook and saw many other species of fish. I asked Richard how fishing has been in the area and he stated that fishing in Snake Bight has improved considerably since the Park Service changed the rules to make the area a “Pole and Troll Zone�, which is a Marine Protected Area. Many fishermen are still against such fishing restrictions, but evidence shows that these Marine Protected Areas help in protecting the fish and enhancing fishing.

Sara Brenes My name is Sara Brenes and I am known as the Shark Whisperer. I have a true love, fascination and passion for sharks. After watching a shark conservation movie when I was 13, I was motivated to start a charity and at the age of 15 I founded Shark Whisperer Organization. I advocate, educate and create awareness for sharks and our oceans. I attend community events, speak at schools, dive shops and clubs, I implemented Shark Advocacy Week programs in schools, I take people on shark tagging research expeditions, I started an awards program for children involved in ocean conservation and I do stand up paddle board tours over shark nurseries. It makes me so proud when people that were once afraid of sharks come up to me after these experiences and tell me how they now feel differently towards sharks. Most people do not realize how important sharks are to our oceans. Sharks are being killed tens of thousands every year primarily for their fins, but also because of by catch. They are hauled up on to fishing boats alive, their fins cut off and then thrown back in the water to slowly drown. Sharks are the apex predators of the oceans, sharks balance the ecosystem in the oceans and without them this balance is disrupted, often to shocking economical losses. I know if you could see sharks like I do, you would want to make a difference to. A charter with Capt RT Trosset in Key west begins at 7 am but the first few hours never involve fishing…at least not with a hook. Rt chases pilchards with a cast net and his goal is to fill his two live wells to the brim with thousands a=of 3 inch baits. Sometimes this can take a half hour but sometimes the hunt for bait can take half a day, but it is what it is.


Offshore it makes all the difference in the world. Once bait is collected the next stop is the reef or one of the Atlantic wrecks or a kingfish hole in the Gulf. My last trip was with Drs Kevin Fox and Deborah Longwill. As a Dermatologist, Dr Deb is an expert on skin cancers but she still loves to spend a day on the water. We ran out to the reef first where the pilchard chum brought up snapper, yellowtail and cero mackerel, but our main goal was tuna and they become most active in the afternoon. About 1pm we ran offshore to a wreck in 240’ of water, anchored up and started chumming.


For the first half hour, things were pretty dead but when the blackfins and bonito showed up, it was pure chaos with three anglers hooked up at once. At one point a sailfish swam right up to the boat for a free snack but he never picked a bait with a hook in it. Everyone should try a day in Key West with Capt RT Trosset (rtspindrift.com) and then you need to go to Dr Deborah Longwill to get checked for those annoying little things called skin cancers that are so attracted to fishermen. Another Record for Florida Tourism Florida has already welcomed more than 72 million visitors in 2013 Governor Rick Scott announced that according to preliminary estimates released by VISIT FLORIDA – the state’s official tourism marketing corporation – 22.9 million visitors came to Florida in the third quarter of 2013 (July-September), an increase of 1.7 percent over the same period in 2012. These numbers represent the largest third quarter for visitation in the state’s history. Governor Scott said, “Today’s announcement of another record quarter for visitation clearly shows ‘It’s Working’ in Florida. Because every 85 visitors to our state support one Florida job; a growing tourism industry equates to more jobs for Florida families and a stronger economy. As we move toward our third consecutive year of record tourism growth, it is clear why the Sunshine State remains the top travel destination across the world. ”


Through the first three quarters of 2013, Florida welcomed 72.6 million visitors – an increase of 3.4 percent over the same period last year. Visitor spending in Florida for January-August 2013 (last reported month) was $51.8 billion, representing a year-over-year increase of 5.8 percent from the same period in 2012. Direct travel-related employment in Florida for January-August (last reported month) rose 2.8 percent, adding 29,700 jobs since this same time one year ago. Each of these figures marks a record, making the first three quarters of 2013 the largest nine-month period in the history of Florida’s tourism industry. “So far this year, we’re up nearly 2.5 million visitors who increased their spending by almost $3 billion, led by a double-digit increase in international visitors,” said Tammy Gustafson, Chair of the VISIT FLORIDA Board of Directors. “This continued momentum is a testament to the strength of VISIT FLORIDA’s marketing efforts, the power of the Sunshine State brand and the dedication of the nearly 1.1 million Floridians who work in the state’s tourism industry.”


An estimated 19.5 million domestic visitors came to Florida during the third quarter of 2013, representing a 0.5 percent increase from the same period in 2012. Florida welcomed 2.9 million overseas visitors in Q3 2013, representing a 10.1 percent increase over Q3 2012, and 516,000 Canadian visitors during the same period, representing a 2.9 percent increase from the previous year. “Record visitor numbers equate to record visitor spending,” said Will Seccombe, President and CEO of VISIT FLORIDA. “With taxable sales up, occupancy rates up, rental car collections up, bed taxes up and average daily room rates up, Florida’s tourism industry has never been stronger.” Carol Dover, President and CEO of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association said, “These newly released tourism numbers are encouraging to our more than 10,000 members of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging


Association in our effort to attract over 100 million visitors to the Sunshine State. As Florida’s largest employer, our tourism and hospitality industry is on the front lines each and every day in providing a world class experience to visitors coming to our state for business meetings, conventions, vacations and milestone celebrations. The Average Daily Room Rate rose 3.6 percent to $102.69 and the occupancy rate for Florida hotels increased 1.9 percentage points to 62.7 percent in Q3 2013 compared to Q3 2012. Tourism-related employment has lead the state in growth for 41 straight months Nearly 13.6 million Florida residents are estimated to have taken a pleasure trip during Q3 2013. The share of in-state pleasure trips by residents was 42.3 percent, resulting in more than 5.7 million pleasure trips in-state – a 6.2 percent increase from the same time last year. Traffic at the state’s five Official Florida Welcome Centers managed by VISIT FLORIDA was up 4.0% in Q3 2013.

High Altitude Fishing Adventure Boulder Mountain By Dr. Mart铆n Ar贸stegui

This summer I experienced a different kind of fishing adventure. Most of my fishing experiences have been at or close to sea level, so when my son Martini suggested that we go fishing in Alpine lakes more than 10,000 feet above sea level I was not sure that this kind of fishing was for me. I reluctantly agree to go and give it a try. I have always been scared of high places, so this was a challenge for me.



My wife Roberta and I met Martini in Las Vegas, Nevada and traveled from there by car through Zion, Bryce Canyon and Escalante National Parks on our way to Boulder Mountain. Traveling through these parks was an experience that I will never forget. The scenery is truly breath taking! Even before we got to Boulder Mountain I was already very happy I went on this adventure. Boulder Mountain has a number of Alpine lakes that have very big trout of different species as well as splake and other fresh water fish. Our plan was to fish at least four days so that we could fish as many of these high altitude lakes as possible.



Steve Stoner, our guide, met us early every morning to start our adventures. One hour of driving up the mountain in very rough terrain was followed by hiking in heavy brush uphill for two to three miles every day. I never had it so hard getting to my fishing spot, but once there, the scenery was truly outstanding and the fishing was great! We caught potential world record Tiger Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Splake and Utah Suckers on fly and light spinning tackle. I truly enjoyed this experience and highly recommend this trip. You do have to be in good enough physical shape to hike uphill at an altitude of 10,000 feet for one to two hours every day. We stayed at the Boulder Mountain Lodge and I highly recommend it. The lodge has on its premises a great restaurant called Hell’s Backbone Grill, we ate there every night and the food is truly outstanding. Trip Information:

Miami’s waterways show-off their colors By Steve Kantner

Color lurks in the waters of Miami/Dade County, due to a lapse in ecological protocol—or mostly the result of unauthorized stockings. These new arrivals are non-native fishes that started appearing in the 1950’s. No one’s quite sure where they originally came from; only that they compete with native species for food and breeding space. But now, thanks to the work of Florida’s Non-Native Lab, an imported “watchdog” keeps them in check. The story goes something like this: Well back before the turn of the century, “exotics” appeared in Miami/Dade waterways. The first of interest to hook-and-line fishermen was a South American expatriate known as the Oscar, taxonomically a member of the cichlid family.


A popular aquarium fish at the time, Oscars quickly spread, which may have led to their eventual release by sympathetic owners who wished to spare their pets the quietus of a toilet flush when forced to move or give up their tanks. Meanwhile, other cichlids that were being raised for food— take the spotted tilapia— likely escaped from fish farms. Regardless of pedigree, the result was the same: Exotics threatened our native species. And what made it worse was the unnerving discovery that many refused to “bite” (being vegetarians), which eliminated Man as a natural enemy. The situation reached critical mass when angry largemouth bass fishermen demanded a solution.


Enter the folks at Florida’s Non-Native Laboratory. It was thendirector, Paul Shaffland, who with his team, used “the hair of the dog” to control these unwelcome arrivals. What the scientists did may seem elementary: Use a natural predator—one that had a limited interaction with our native species— to control other exotics. But it worked like a charm. It started with the importation of butterfly peacock (just another, larger cichlid) eggs from several South American countries. After culturing three generations of disease-free stock, the Non-Native team was ready—for the first peacock release in two canals that were located within the Biscayne Aquifer. Water temperatures there remained more-or-less constant, which was crucial to the survival of the newly-stocked predators. The rest of the story is history. Since that epic stocking in 1983, the species has spread throughout South Florida, where it continues to keep other exotics in check..





NEWLAND TOP ANGLER, ABIGAIL III TOP BOAT IN 2013 WAHOO WINDUP A double-header hook-up landed anglers April Newland and Mike Landgraf cash prizes for the two largest wahoo caught in the Wahoo Windup, hosted by the Virgin Islands Game Fishing Club (VIGFC) and sponsored by Budget Marine. Newland’s 41.14-pounder weighed in as the largest, however still some 34 pounds short of earning the $10,000 prize offered for a wahoo over 75-pounds. Landgraf reeled in the November 17 tournament’s second largest wahoo, a 24.75-pounder. Both Newland and Landgraf fished aboard local sports fishing charter boat, Abigail III, helmed by Capt. Red Bailey. Abigail III won Best Boat for the most wahoo by count with two totals. “We had already caught 10 barracuda when the rod went down strong,” says Newland, who fought and caught the winning fish while standing up. “It was a fighter. It took me about 15 to 20 minutes to reel it in.” Newland adds, “It would be great to get more women involved in fishing. It’s so exciting and so much fun.” Meanwhile, seconds after Newland’s fish hit the bait, Landgraf’s line went taught with a second wahoo. “We ended up fighting both fish at the same time,” explains Landgraf. Newland’s husband, Byron, provided the luck by suggesting the Abigail III fish off the south side of St. Thomas due to heavy seas rolling in to the north. “I first suggested we go north, but then followed Byron suggestion due to the weather,” says Capt. Red Bailey. “But I’ll tell you, that 100-pound wahoo is still out there in the north!” Michael Berry, fishing aboard the boat, Anger Management, reeled in the third largest wahoo, a 20.68-pounder. Only three wahoo were caught by the fleet of 7 boats and 30 anglers.


However, all boats reported plenty of barracuda with one boat getting as many as 35 bites. Personnel from the Department of Planning & Natural Resources Fish & Wildlife Department conducted the official weigh-in at IGY’s American Yacht Harbor Marina. Prizes were presented at an Awards Dinner at the VIGFC held Monday night. “We had a great tournament and we invite everyone to come out and fish with us in future tournaments,” says tournament director, Paul Meyer. Two anglers have pocketed the $10,000 cash prize in the last 10 years. In 2012, Clive Mahabir, aboard local charter boat Mixed Bag, reeled in a whopping 91.3-pounder, while in 2003 Mike Kuszewski, fishing aboard the local charter boat Black Pearl, landed a 94.1-pound wahoo, which remains the tournament record. His life has been devoted also to professional fishing. Dr. Aróstegui, member of the Board of Trustees of the International Game & Fishing Association (IGFA), is the holder of more than 400 fishing world records, including 200 with fly-fishing equipment, and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Dr. Arostegui is also a professional photographer specializing in fishing and nature. He is currently the Director of Travel and Exploration for our magazine, for which he travels to different regions of the world to capture with his lens the most beautiful images that human eyes have ever seen.

Pat Ford

Pat Ford is considered the best sport fishing photographer in the United States of America. He graduated as a lawyer from the Columbia University School of Law in 1965. He is currently a senior litigation lawyer in the courts of Florida, as well as a photographer with a passion for fishing. Pat Ford has traveled extensively throughout the world and has won 32 world records in several fishing tournaments held by the IGFA. He is the author of “The Best Fly-Fishing Trips Money Can Buy” which tells about different places he would rather go fishing with a fly hook.


Nick Faroy

Aviator and Aerial Professional Photographer A pilot for many years, specializing in aerial photography. The perspective of buildings and man-made structures, coupled with an appreciation of nature, inspire him to capture on aerial photos what his eyes behold from above so that others may enjoy them, too. His preference is to take aerial photos of coastal locations because they have a visual impact that is very special to him from a professional point of view. For Nick Faroy, rock formations and marine life are, indeed a impressive and beautiful scenes worthy of admiration.

Enrico Ghedini

Angler and fishing writer

Enrico Ghedini was born in 1974 and lives in Bologna, Italy. He is a globetrotter angler and a fishing writer with passion. He has traveled the four continents. He is a lure and fly angler mainly, but he also likes bottom fishing and live baiting. Enrico fishes in freshwater in Europe and Italy, and in salt and freshwater when traveling to tropical locations to target specific species. Enrico is involved in www.insidefishing.it. Their main activity is to organize lure-fishing tournaments to promote recreational angling among young people and to promote catch and release as well as ethical fishing techniques.

She received a Masters in Biological Science from the University of Havana Cuba in 1980, a Masters in Marine Policy from theUniversity of Miami, Florida in 1997, as well as a Masters in Information from Florida State University in 1998.

Clemente Atia

Writer, naturalist, artist and professional diver. He studied at the Cuban Naval Academy, been later part of the underwater search and rescue team. He worked at the National Aquarium of Cuba drawing fish for scientific publications worldwide. Creator and writer of the series of nature documentaries PROJECT 5, in the 80’s. He has also worked for different magazines and digital magazines on topics related to the sea and the environment. Cameraman, editor and specialist in underwater recordings have won four Emmy Awards. Favorite hobbies: stay under water, the investigation and search for lost treasures.

Steve Kantner

A freelance writer, editor, and fishing personality whose byline has appeared in Fly Rod & Reel, Salt Water Sportsman, Fly Fishing in Salt Waters and numerous other outdoor publications. Steve also worked as a guide, while hosting a drive-time radio show. Plus, he’s appeared in a number of television episodes that showcased his particular specialty—fly fishing from land for inshore species. Steve just finished a book titled Landcaptain; the Secrets of Fishing South Florida on Foot for Wild River Press that’s due out later this year.
