50주년, 새로운 도약의 역사

영어영문학과 창립 50주년을 진심으로 축하드립 니다. 학교 발전을 위해 애쓰시는 영문과의 동문, 학생, 교수님 모든 분께 감사의 말씀을 전합니다. 지난 1960년 서강대학교와 함께 시작한 영문과는 항상 서강대학교 역사의 선두에 있었습니다. 영문과는 서강대학교가 한국의 대표 대학교로서 성장하는데 가장 큰 공헌을 했습니다. 영문과에서 배출한 자랑 스러운 동문들은 어느새 한국은 물론 세계를 무대로 열심히 활동하는 재목들이 되었습니다. 이제 서강대학교는 50주년을 계기로 새로운 도약의 역사를 힘차게 시작했습니다. 특별한 서강대학교의 발전에 영문과 가족 모두가 함께해 주시기를 부탁 드립니다. 감사합니다. 이종욱 총장

영문과 50주년을 진심으로 축하합니다. 올해를 포함해서 지난 3년간 우리 대학 영문과는 중앙일보 평가에서 전국 최우수 학과로 평가 받았습니다. 한 번은 일 등을 할 수 있고, 두 번도 할 수 있지만 세 번 연속해서 일 등을 한 것은 영문과의 연구 역량과 교육 역량이 그만큼 내실을 갖추었다는 증거가 될 것입니다. “제비 한 마리가 여름을 만들지 않는다”고 아리스토텔레스가 말한 적이 있습니다. 탁월성은 오랜 시간의 훈련과 노력을 통해 습관이 될 때 비로소 산출될 수 있는 능력입니다. 영문과는 이제 그 역량을 드러내기 시작했다고 저는 생각합니다. 내년에도, 10년 뒤에도, 아니, 앞으로 50년 뒤에도 영문과가 탁월한 학과로 서기를 기원합니다. 강영안 국제인문학부 학장

Happy celebration of the 50th anniversary I am very happy that you are celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the English Department there. Of course I was amazed and grateful to God to see the success of the university. Nogosan was bare when we arrived and now look at it! To have lived in such a culture as Korea's, where a professor ranked socially (in Confucianism) above even one's family, was a great gift of God for all of us Americans. I am still in contact with former students over the internet as well as face-to-face and by phone. I am proud of them all and treasure their lasting friendship and acquaintance. When all is said and done, relationships are the most important things in life and bring the greatest joy and peace! Fr. Killoren first started that saying (which I am sure is well-known to you) “Be as proud of Sogang as Sogang is proud of you!” That is a great legacy and will bind alumni together forever!

1. Fr. Jerome E. Breunig, S.J. On February 18th the charter for the new college was given by the ministry of Education with permission to admit 160 students.

The first hint of possible Jesuit work in Korea in modern times occurred when Bishop Ki Nam Ro of Seoul and three Korean priests came to Nagatsuka, Japan in 1943 to make a retreat under the direction of the Jesuit novice master, Fr. then financial administrator in Japan, visited Seoul, March 10-15, 1950, to talk over the possibilities. The outbreak of the Korean War brought an abrupt

halt to further planning at this time. After the war, Archbishop Ro visited Father John Baptist Janssens, the Jesuit Superior in Rome, and invited the Jesuits to Korea again. Fr. Bitter returned to Seoul and consulted with the Archbishop. This meeting resulted in a firm determination to send at least one Jesuit father to prepare for some educational work in Korea. In 1954 planning was translated into action. In July of that year, Archbishop Ro warmly welcomed Father Arrupe, then provincial of the Japanese Province, to Seoul, expressed his grateful happiness that the Jesuits

Geppert, Dr. John Myun Chang, and educational leaders, including the Minister of Education. An important and historic meeting with the president of Korea, Dr. Syngman Rhee, was arranged by Dr. Chang. the question of receiving a charter for a Jesuit college, Syngman Rhee said encouragingly, “It could be done.” Father Theodore Geppert had come to Korea in 1954. During the first years as Jesuit Superior, he proved himself a most capable Good Shepherd. He first purchased a walled acre-lot and residence in Seosomun-dong and had it ready for the first arrivals in 1955. The residence in downtown Seoul was near historic South Gate, the number-one national treasure, which dates back more than 500 years. Seoul was then a walled city, and the narrow oval opening in the elaborate of City Hall, the famous Seoul Railroad Station, the market and just about everything else of importance. The location gave an open window for Syngman Rhee’s grandiose parades, the 1960 student revolution, the visit of Eisenhower and much else. First-year arrivals were Korean Jesuit Fathers Peter Sung Man Jin and Tobias Taegwan Kim, who had been working in Japan, along with Fr. Kenneth Killoren and Brother Authur Dethlefs, who “discovered” Korea on Columbus Day, 1955, when they arrived on the freighter, Jean La Fitte. Fr. Clarence Herbst arrived in November 1956, and Fr. Basil M. Price just a year later. The charter for the Korean Society of Jesus was granted in November 1956. The present Nogosan property was sighted the last day of 1955. After year-long negotiations in which the patient Korean real estate broker had to deal separately with twenty-four different owners, the fifty-three-acre property was obtained on December 22, a welcome Christmas gift in 1956. Nogosan means Old Lady Mountain, but to these pioneers it was Diamond Mountain. Only it needed a lot of

cutting, for there was hardly a level spot anywhere large enough for a single building. A contract was made with Architect Chung-Up Kim, a disciple of the world famous Le Corbusier. Mr. Kim’s designs dot Seoul City, including those of the Drama Center, the French Embassy, and Ehwa University Library. The building contract was given to the Sam Yuk Company. “When do we start?” was Fr. Geppert’s inquiry. “I will have to consult a mudang

(fortune teller),” the contractor answered. “July 24th” was the soothsayer’s date (1958). Just to be on the safe side, Fr. Geppert blessed the site with holy water early that morning before work commenced. The college charter had been requested from the government in August 1959. After repeated inquiries nothing was happening. Finally, at the Jesuit’s request, Bishop Quinlan arranged for an interview with President Rhee. The meeting took place on December 10th. Scheduled for ten minutes, it continued pleasantly for almost half an hour. The Bishop was spokesman for Fathers Killoren and Geppert; and Dr. Choi, the Minister of Education, was also present. President Rhee digressed several times to praise Cardinal Spellman for his visits to Korea and to speak about cooperation between Catholics and Protestants. Toward the end, the Bishop

smilingly interrupted, “We are here to get a college charter.” Rhee answered, “I will talk to Dr. Choi. What can you do when a friend comes to ask you?” The charter was granted on February 18, 1960. Only then was the name finally chosen. It was simply the name of the “West River” area-SOGANG. Fr. Kenneth E. Killoren was named first president.

were Jesuits. Fr. Jin was chairman. The others were Fathers Killoren, Youn Kim, and Ko Yong Pak, who came to Sogang for the fall semester of 1960. by the Ministry of Education, with permission to admit 160 students. On March 21, 600 took the entrance exam. Eight days later, a list of successful candidates was posted. On April 12, the 158 students registered. The first classes began at eight o’clock in the morning on April 18th.

2. Fr. John P. Daly, S.J. All the first year students in 1960 studied conversational English daily with native speakers. In 1961 we had the joy of ordering books from England and America for the Sogang library, all the classics in English and American literature.

Fr. Bernbrock and I have been friends and co-workers for many years; we joined the Jesuits together, were ordained priests in 1956 and studied at the University of North Carolina for our doctorates and then came to Sogang in the spring and summer of 1961. We had the privilege and joy of starting an English program and an English department from the beginning. Actually, Sogang started with freshmen in 1960. Fr. Basil M. Price and Fr. Clarence Herbst, along with two scholastics, Terry Doyle and John Mitchell, were teaching English. Two Korean professors had been hired for the department, Yong Kwon Kim and Suk Jong Song. English into Korean and vice versa. All the first year students in 1960 studied conversational English daily with native speakers. So this was the situation that Fr. Bernbrock and I found as Sogang started its second year. The second year

students also had to take English conversation five days a week. During the summer and fall of our first year (1961) in Korea, we had the joy of ordering books from England and America for the Sogang library, all the classics in English and American literature. We modeled it on the courses we had studied at North Carolina, where we both had taken up to 20 different courses. We had required courses and electives for both American and English literature.

if not the first language laboratory in Korea for English training; I believe it seated 40. The individual recorders were two tracks so that students could listen to one track and record their responses on the second track. We hired Professor Chung Ho Suh from the Korean Air Force to direct the lab. Then we designed a course to train simultaneous translators, using the slow English of Voice of America broadcasts for the first track. This did not work out too well as we found that simultaneous translation is a very difficult field. Fr. Bernbrock and I received a grant from the Asian Society to study English language training programs in East Asia; so in the summer of 1962 we visited Okinawa, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and

the Philippines. In the following summer, we offered a program at Sogang for Korean high school English teachers sponsored by the U.S. Embassy. The teachers were impressed with Sogang’s language lab. In the fall of 1962, we offered lectures in English for students and faculty from other universities on the latest best sellers. We presented our views, pro and con, in lecture style in our largest classroom, 401, on the 4th floor of the Administration building. Robert Frost and Faulkner had both published new books that year. We received another grant from the Asian Foundation to purchase one of the first Television television programs of the chapters in the English conversation texts, using American scholastics as actors. They were mostly filmed at Sogang, but several were made in the downtown Seoul area and in stores. Finally, one very important step. As our four year college took shape, the American Jesuits also had to teach in their special areas, such as English, Philosophy and Theology. Fr. Bernbrock and I were busy with upper division literature courses. Who could teach conversation to first and second year students? So we started a program of inviting American “Lay Volunteers,” in 1963. Pat Bowers and Dick O’Farrell were the first two. Sogang provided a small salary, found housing among Korean families, and offered

Recorders from Ampex; it used large, one - inch recording tapes. Fr. Bernbrock then began making

transportation (one way if they stayed one year; round trip if they stayed two years). This proved to be a popular program and ran until the Peace Corps volunteers took over later.

for the second year of classes, Sogang had but one building, the administration building. I was made treasurer and given an office on the first floor in back of the phone/reception room. Fr. Tracy, the academic dean, had an office on my left; Fr. Killoren, the president, had an office on my right. I also became the English Department chair, but I worked out of the treasurer’s office. As you know several years ago the entire interior of the administration building was rebuilt,

When the C classroom building was completed in 1962, Fr. Bernbrock and I shared an office there. He became chairman and met students and professors in our office as I still had the treasurer’s office. I believe these faculty offices in the C Building have also disappeared or are used for other purposes.

3. 김용권 명예교수

학과의 하나다. 1960년 3월 21일에서 3월 23일 사흘 동안 김용권 명예교수

에 입학시험이 있었다. 입학정원 160명 모집에 600여명 이 응시해서 166명이 합격했으며 158명이 최종으로 등록 하였다. 6개 학과 가운데 영어영문학과와 경제학과는 정 원이 40명씩이고 사학과, 철학과, 수학과, 물리학과는 각 각 20명이었다. 신입생 가운데 남학생은 132명이고 여학 생은 26명이었는데 이 가운데 11명이 영문과에 들어왔다. 이 후에도 영문과의 여학생 수는 타 학과에 비해 많았다. 1960년 4월 18일 개강 당시 영문과 소속은 나뿐이었

강독(English Reading Lab)으로 구성되었다. 나는 영문강독을 담당했고 영어회화·독해는 헙스트(Fr. Clarence A. Herbst, S.J.), 프라이스(Fr. Basil M. Price, S.J.) 두 신부와 도일 (Terence W. Doyle), 미첼(John L. Mitchell) 두 신학생(Scholastic)이 담당하였다. 내가 맡 은 영문강독 과목은 전체 학생을 한 반에 40명씩 4개 반으로 나누어 매주 월수와 화목에 2시 간씩 수업했다. 영어회화·독해 과목은 전체학생을 한 반에 20명씩 8개 반으로 나누어 매주

월요일에서 금요일까지 매일 1시간씩 수업했다. 영어회화와 독해 과목은 미국대학의 Freshman English 특히 ESL for International Students 과목과 비슷했다. 미국인 교수진은 처음부터 영어로 교수했고 학생들의 영어 발음 에서 시작하여 듣기·말하기·쓰기 능력을 길렀다. 매 시간을 Quiz로 시작했고, 수시로 발표 를 시키고 매일같이 과제물을 주고 제 시간에 제출하게 하는 등 ‘혹독한 훈련’을 계속했다. 학 생들 가운데는 난생처음인 외국인과의 대면에서 겪은 ‘문화충격’을 이겨내지 못하거나 ‘혹독

한 훈련’에 반발하고 탈락하는 학생들도 적지 않았다. 물론 능동적 참여를 통하여 영어능력 을 향상시킨 학생들의 수가 많았다. 대학은 1964년까지 교양필수과목인 교양영어의 이수학점 을 19학점이나 요구할 정도로 교양영어 프로그램에 역점을 두었었다. 1965년부터는 16학점으로 줄었다. 당시의 졸업 이수학점은 160학점이었다. 서강대 영문과는 1961년에 또 다시 타 대학 영문학과 교수들의 이목을 끌게 되었다. 미국대학 영문과 Ph.D.인 데일리, 번브럭 두 신부가 전임 Department of English

교수로 부임했기 때문이다. 1950년대에 서울대와 연세대에는 풀브라이트(Fulbright Program)로 방한한 미국인 영문학 교수들이 1, 2년간 강의 하고 돌아갔을 뿐 전임교수는 어느 대학교에도 없었다. 데일리 신부는 학과장에 취임하자 영문과 교과과정을 확정하고 각 과목의 강의안에 따 라 강의를 진행하게 하였다. 이제 2학년생이 된 1960년도 입학생들은 영문학개론, 영문학 형태론, 영작문 과목을 이수하면서 다시 한 번 ‘혹독한 훈련’을 겪게 되었다. 나와 송석중 두 전임강사도 색다른 시련에 직면하게 되었다. 1961년 9월 어느 날의 과회의에서 데일리 신부가 제안했다. 서강대 영문과가 타 대학 영문과와 경쟁하려면 영미문학 외에 영어학(English Linguistics)과 미국학(American Studies) 프로그램의 개설이 필요하다는 것이었다.

이수하면 어떻겠느냐는 것이었다. 이에 자극받아 송 선생은 1962년 여름에 풀브라이 트(Fulbright) 장학생으로 인디아나 대학교(Indiana University)에 가서 언어학 박사 과정을 시작했고 68년에 과정을 마쳤으나 귀국하지 않고 미시간 주립대학의 동아시 아언어학과 교수로 부임하였다. 나는 개인사정으로 61년 12월에 덕성여대 영문과로 자리를 옮겼고 63년 여름에 풀브라이트 장학생으로 미네소타 (Minnesota)대학원에 가서 미국학 박사과정을 이수하고 66년 여름에 서강 영문과에 복귀하였다. 그동안 영문과에는 많은 발전이 있었고 교수진도 보강되었다. 번브럭 신부(Fr.

Quiery, S.J.)가 부임하였다. 퀴어리 신부 는 영어로 된 ‘춘향가’를 작사 작곡하여 연출 하기도 하였다. 1964년에 캘리포니아주 샌퍼넌도밸리 대학의 조지 시드니(George Sidney) 교수가 풀브라이트(Fulbright) 방문교수로 내한하여 미국학 프로그램 개설에 참여하였다. 그리하여 1965년 영문과 와 사학과의 부전공으로 미국학 프로그램을 시작하였다. 1966년에 매킨토시 신부 (Fr. Robert K. McIntosh, S.J.)가 부임하였고 1967년에는 브루닉 신부(Fr. Jerome E. Breunig, S.J.)가 부임하였다. 1968년에는 영어학 전공인 김태옥 교수가 부임하 였다. 1969년에 학과장인 번브럭 신부는 건강상의 이유로 미국으로 돌아갔고 브루닉 신부가 제3대 학과장에 취임하였다.

“The problem we faced in teaching our Sogang students English was that Koreans had no bread, no sandwiches, never ate with a knife and fork, and had no bowling alleys, etc. But all of these were vocabulary words in their English textbook. The students could pronounce the words but had no real

idea of their meaning nor a feeling for their use in a specific context. With the America Eighth Army being a ‘little America’ in Seoul, we could go there and produce television programs in realistic English speaking settings for our students to view in the classroom. They could now associate the words and sentences with ‘real life’ situations.” The above are comments by Rev. John E. Bernbrock, S.J., in an e-mail to me, on July 19, 2001, who arrived at Sogang in the Fall of 1961, and who was the former chairman of Sogang’s Department of English. Resourceful and energetic, Fr. Bernbrock brought great humor and zeal to everything he did, including the teaching of English. An Asia Foundation grant of $3,782 enabled Sogang to improve its instructions for learning “Spoken English” through the use of the new technology and educational teaching methodology of television. Ampex Model VTR-7000 portable tape recorder. In this creative endeavor, he was assisted by Fr. Theodore W. Walters, S.J., who had a Ph.D. in Linguistics and was a Fulbright exchange professor. Before ETV, however, the first innovative feature of Sogang’s spoken English program was its native speakers and small groups of students in classrooms. The students were grouped into sections (16-21 students per section) at the beginning of the semester, then the results of personal interviews and classroom and language laboratory tests. The second innovation was the language laboratory. It accommodated 42 students. The individual hearing booths were made of plywood with formica desk tops and sloping tape decks, while the upper panels were covered with acoustical tile. Each student had a combination earphone-microphone. The earphones were equipped with oversized rubber cushions, which made them almost soundproof. The instructor could send a program to a booth, listen to the students practicing, talk to individual students who might also wish to talk back to the instructor, or talk to the entire class at once. The first instructor of the laboratory was Mr. Chung Ho Suh, former director of the ROK Air Force English Training Squadron, Daejeon. He was trained at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas and subsequently received a doctorate in Law from Sophia University, Tokyo.

Sogang’s third innovation in the teaching of English as a second language was its closed-circuit educational television (ETV) program begun in October 1966, as cited above. Fr. Bernbrock would load the ETV equipment into the Jesuit Community’s Volkswagon van together with his technicians and television actors and actresses, most of whom were from the English Department faculty. Eleven of them were native speakers. They went to the Eighth Army’s

“Little America” or Americans’ homes in Seoul to record real-life English dialogue scenes with image and sound. The dialogue situations were video-taped on location and each taping lasted approximately 25 minutes. Recorded scenes took place, for example, outside the Seoul Stadium, at the Eighth Army bowling alley, in American kitchens and dining rooms, restaurants, tea rooms, market places or any location that would support the text and dialogue used in the students’ textbook, Spoken American English, by William Clarke, in three volumes. The students studied these and viewed the videotapes during their freshman and sophomore years. Sogang’s television laboratory had 150 seats equipped with earphones and five television

monitors. Each videotaped dialogue/scene lasted 12 minutes and was played twice. The television episode asked students to imitate line-by-line the dialogue, repeat it and respond when the first word cues were given. Thus, they combined hearing, reading and speaking. Most importantly, however, through this ETV technology, the students saw “close ups” of the native speaker; they observed facial features, gestures and mouth movements of the speakers on the television screens before them. They saw words and sentences in a real English language-

speaking context. There is a subtle kinesthetic transfer here from the native speaker to the learner

similar to what occurs between a mother and her child when they communicate. These “live” dialogue situations, as opposed to the “cold” printed sentences and vocabulary in the textbook, suddenly infused life and meaning into the textbooks’ words and sentences. Finally, as another memory aid, the students saw on the TV monitors the written dialogue script as well, while they listened through their earphones to the native speakers’ dialogue and imitated it. Although there was an English teacher monitoring the students, corrections in pronunciation, intonation or imitation of the sentence patterns, etc., were made in the audio laboratory after this 25 minutes of classroom study and corrections if needed. Extra work in the ETV laboratory was given to English majors and students taking advanced English courses or the American Studies Program. Fr. Bernbrock began as early as 1963 to prepare for the establishment of closed-circuit ETV with the purpose of developing a more effective way to teach spoken English. In 1964 and 1966, he traveled to five countries in the Far East and the United States to collect materials and observe firsthand ETV methodology and technology. He set high standards in English conversation teaching and made history by introducing, almost singlehandedly, this innovative educational television teaching method, the first of its kind in Korean universities and colleges.

1960년 4월 18일. 서강대학교는 3개 학부, 6개 학과, 입학정원 160명으로 개교하였다. 개교 당시 학교에는 본관(A관) 건물 하나만 있었다. 본관은 1957년 건축가 김중업 씨가 학교 부지를 측량했으며, 11월 13일부터 부지 평탄 작업을 시작하여, 1959년 5월 26일에 상량식을 하였다. 1959년 11월, 연건평 1,266평, 4층의 본관이 완성되었다. 1960년 겨울에는 난방 시설공사가 끝나, 오랫동안 서강의 상징이었던 굴뚝이 들어섰다. 본관은 서울시 건축상을 수상할 정도로 당시에는 가장 현대적인 최신식의 건물이었다.

신입생은 1년 동안 자연과학개론, 역사, 철학, 경제학, 영어(영어회화와 독해 5학점, 영문강독 1학점), 국어, 제2외국어, 체육 등 총 21학점(1학기)의 교양과목을 이수했다.

1. Faculty 1960~1985 “…though there were not many books for a college library, many of those which we checked were books that no other library in Korea possessed.” Fr. Basil M. Price, S.J.

Forty-two years ago today when I arrived in Korea, I was on a steamship coming from San Francisco. “The Empire State,” a freighter of the States Marines Line, left the Golden Gate Bridge on October 23rd. 1957, and dropped anchor outside the Incheon Harbor at 9:30 AM on November 14th. During the three weeks on ship I had read some books about Korea. The trip by jeep from Incheon to So-so-mun-dong in Seoul demonstrated many of the verbal pictures I had formed from reading. At So so mun dong I met and then lived with Father Theodor Geppert (who arrived in Korea on October 30, 1954); Song Man Jin and Tae 베이즐 M. 프라이스 신부 Fr. Basil M. Price, S.J. (1923. 6. 18~2004. 9. 29)

Gawn Kim, who came back to their fatherland in the spring and fall of 1955 respectively; Ken Killoren, who became the first president of Sogang from 1960 to

1963, and Art Dethlefs. The latter two Jesuits had come to Seoul in October 1955. Art was the master

administrator, builder and advisor for everybody. Finally, Clancy Herbst greeted me at Seosomun-dong. He had come to Korea in November 1956. Also living in community were two young men who would later enter the Society of Jesus: Ki Sok Lee became a Jesuit and died at the end of 1982, and Han Taek Lee, currently retrived bishop of Yijungbu. On November 15th, 1957, Art Dethlefs guided me from Seosomun-dong to Nogosan to see the 50,000 pyong of land which was just then being transferred from the original twenty owners to Fr. Geppert; however the documentation and registration of ownership was completed only on March 27, 1958. Paging through the

베이즐 M. 프라이스 신부(Fr. Basil M. Price, S.J.)는 샌프란시스코(San Francisco)에서 미해군 화물수송기 “왕국(The Empire State)” 증기선을 타고 1957년 11월 14일에 처음으로 한국의 인천항에 도착했다. 이 회고담은 프라이스 신부가 1999년 11월 14일에 작성한 “Memory’s Corridors”라는 제목의 수필에서 발췌한 내용이다. 이 수필에서 프라이스 신부는 1957년에 처음 한국에 온 이후 서강대의 설립과정과 1960년 중반까지의 역사적 사실들을 상세히 기록하고 있다. 발췌 내용에는 프라이스 신부가 1957년 11월 14일에 한국에 처음 도착한 직후부터 서강대의 첫 건물인 본관(Administrtion)이 건설되기까지의 회고가 담겨 있다. 수필(총 8쪽)의 전문은 50주년 기념 서강대 영문과 동문회 웹진에 실려 있다. 프라이스 신부의 글을 보내준 존 E.

diary which was kept from October 1955 until today, one is struck by the number of properties which Frs. Geppert, Jin and Killoren inspected before deciding on Nogosan. Many of those properties were considered undesirable because, among other reasons, they were too far from the city. Nogosan was judged to be in the countryside in the late 1950s! Leveling the site for the first building was completed in December 1957, but actual

construction work began only on July 24, 1958. The architect for the building was the quite famous Jung Up Kim and the Sam Yuk Construction Company did the work. During the construction period, and for five years afterwards, I spent nearly two days a and books. While there are many interesting recollections about the birth pains of the Administration Building, for the sake of brevity I will pass over them. The building was entirely completed by February 1960. It was reputed to be the sole education building in Korea that was centrally heated; and that fact was greatly appreciated by staff, faculty and students alike in subsequent years. A few days before the charter for the colleges was issued, the Ministry sent four inspectors to check the building, the library and other facilities. One of the four was Dr. George Paik, President of Yonsei University. After a thorough inspection of the only building we had, Dr. Paik made an interesting comment: “We are accustomed in Korea to find a fine big gate when a facility is opened, but often enough the building is in the early stages of construction. Here is something new: no gate at all, not even a street, but a truly excellent building.” He also remarked that though there were not many books for a college library, many of those which we checked were books that no other library in Korea possessed.

Chun Hyang Story - the first English musical in a fourth floor classroom William H. Quiery

It was a lucky accident when I came upon the Chun Hyang story. The story was a natural plot for musical comedy, and we first performed it in a fourth floor classroom. A reviewer from the newspaper gave it a rave review, and we extended the schedule. Soon the U.S. embassy and a good many critics and teachers came to see the play. Next the drama center asked for it, and we took the show downtown, where others came to see. The following year we had to do it all over again, ending with publication. The Eighty-eight Seoul Olympics next used the play as their entry with an additional run in a legitimate theatre. Several other universities did the show over the years, I am told; and finally 2006 at the Coex Center, a beautiful and very large spectacle was mounted,

but with some unauthorized changes in the script that diminished the success. I personally returned to Korea to see the Olympics version and the ‘06 one, and now dream that the play, in an international language, English, can become a permanent part of Korea’s artistic tradition, hopefully as part of the annual Chun Hyang festival in Namwon. 윌리엄 H. 퀴어리(William H. Quiery, 퇴임 후 William Quiery Cleary로 개명) 교수는 춘향전의 영어대본을 뮤지컬 공연용으로 썼으며, 대본은 1965 년에 저서 Chun Hyang Song=成春香: an English language musical comedy adapted from Korea's ancient minstrel classic "The Fragrance of Spring"(서강대출판사)로 출판되었다. Quiery 교수는 2012년 1월 7일에 편집진에게 보낸 회고록에서 “Could we put on the musical (Chun Hyang Story) at Sogang, using the English department students for actors and singers?”(서강대 영문과 학생들이 배우와 가수가 되어 춘향전을 뮤지컬로 공연할 수 있을까요?)라는 희망의 메시지를 띄웠다. 윌리엄 H. 퀴어리 교수는 2012년 5월 3일에 타계하였다.

A bombshell was dropped among Jesuits of the land-locked Jesuit province comprised by Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, North and South Dakota, on March 25, 1955, when the general of the Society of Jesus published, a decree for them: “Go to Korea and Teach.” Now it was the turn of the Middle United States Jesuits. Their foreign mission was to be the

the provincial of the Wisconsin Province, Very Reverend Leo A. Burns, arrived in Korea to reconnoiter and to authorize Father Theodore Geppert, already in Seoul on loan from the Jesuit Japanese Province, to purchase a residence. In

Milwaukee that summer, I saw the young giants who were going to Korea. Father Kenneth Killoren and Brother Arthur Dethlefs, pioneers-to-be in white robes.; Miss Agnes Kim, Korean graduate student at Marquette University, garbed in her colorful native dress. Together with them, I appeared on the Milwaukee Reports television program. Then, in January 1963, I received a phone call from Father Burns’ successor, the Very Reverend John J. Foley, who delivered my own personal bombshell when he said, accept a mission cross, pack a suitcase, and say goodbye before leaving in mid-February. In fact, my visa for Korea arrived in Milwaukee only a few hours before my scheduled flight. The English department of Sogang Jesuit College in Seoul was in immediate need of a teacher, as it was just beginning its fourth academic year and preparing its first graduating class. My assignment there was to teach English literature. For this purpose I received from Marquette a semester’s leave of absence. It was to prove an exciting, enriching experience. This is how my diary recorded my first week in Korea.

브루닉 신부(Fr. Jerome E. The new scholastic year began March 4. The first week brought many surprises, not the least of which was the fact that we have classes not five but six days a week. I launched my Renaissance Literature course with considerable enthusiasm since we were featuring an old friend of mine, Thomas More. Unfortunately, there often is no electricity during the day; an electric razor would be of no use here. My comfortable room has a southwestern exposure overlooking the city that stretches between Sogang and the Han River (about a twenty-minute walk), and a range of foothills across the river with a range of mountains forming the backdrop. On one of my first evenings here several students and I toured the culture centers, the Seoul Cathedral, and the Mountain Park at the center of the city, ending our journey at a Korean restaurant. The big five-storey building consists entirely of private eating rooms. We took off our shoes, sat on cushions, and ate highly seasoned food with chopsticks. Afterwards, we sang songs in English and Korean. On still another evening, a friend took two of us to a Chinese restaurant, where similar eating conditions prevailed; but this time I finally mastered the rudiments of eating with chopsticks. While occasional noisesomeness, bumpy, muddy roads, sporadic electric power, and fluctuating Department of English

currency prove disturbing at times, and petty and not so pretty thievery combines with the “crime” of a lower standard of living, my general impression is that Koreans are a great people, courageous, funloving, patient, industrious, and, what is most important, perhaps more interested than any other nation at the present time in joining Christ’s One, Holy, Apostolic, Catholic Church.

I arrived by ship from San Francisco on the 8th of September, 1965. That was the day before the Chuseok holiday and in the evening the English Department had a party atop Nogo-san. We danced in the moonlight and sang GanggangSullae. For me, it was an unforgettable introduction to the English Department.

communicative, and mostly interesting; and our English program, grounded in William L. Clark’s Spoken American English series, hit all the bases - listening, speaking, reading and writing. the bad: The pain of mimeograph printing, and early 8:30a.m. classes with late arriving students, each with an imaginative excuse. the ugly: All was beautiful except the dirt road from Sinchon Rotary and the mud tracked in by students on rainy days.

After my priesthood ordination, I came back to Sogang in 1973. Sogang was already a growing institution. My contact with English majors in the 70s was mainly with composition, speech, and advanced conversation students. Thinking of the English Department faculty of the 70s, each of you will have someone to whom you are grateful; but I especially recall with respect, Father Jerry Breunig, who taught at Sogang until his death in 1980. I can never forget Jerry’s knowledge, love, and dedication to the English major students, his finding good teachers for “Head Start” and for the regular English Department courses - we used to say that he met planes at Gimpo to search out good teachers for Sogang - his encouragement of students to master living English, his tracking down reporters for the Sogang Herald, and finally, even his visiting American companies in Seoul to find jobs for our new English Department graduates.

During the years from 1974, when I began teaching at Sogang, until the time I retired in 2001, I experienced many changes. The educational atmosphere in Korea in the 70s was often difficult. For student demonstrations led to the suspension of classes for two or more weeks at a time. In the early years, the demonstrations were a kind of ritual. We teachers could easily turn demonstrating students back into the campus when they began to head out into the streets. Gwangju uprising, the army occupied the Sogang campus; and the school was closed for more than a month. The captain in charge was a graduate

from a Jesuit school in the United States; and when Fr. Breunig died, the soldiers formed an honor guard. But a Jesuit visitor from the States was startled when he arrived at the Sogang gate only to be confronted by a soldier atop an army tank with a machine gun facing him. Social unrest continued to

escalate; but by the end of the 80s, that phase of student-government confrontation passed. Closer to home, the educational atmosphere at Sogang changed in the late 70s because the English Department suddenly was allowed to open its enrollment from 40 students a year to more than a hundred. The family atmosphere of the early 70s passed away, but it was good to have more students to teach. In the 90s, opening up took place in the curriculum itself, when students were allowed more than one major and required courses were reduced. The concentrated English literature curriculum that had been the focus of teaching during the past two decades gave way to a broader, freer educational outlook; but it lacked the academic rigor of the concentrated curriculum. More importantly, the educational atmosphere at Sogang changed because students had become Department of English

more mature over the years. The rather unsophisticated students of the 70s gave way to students who had greater self-esteem and broader intellectual horizons. This new brand of students had grown up in the years of radical social changes in Korea, and they had benefited from the broader openness to the world brought about by the ’88 Olympics. Sogang itself now had a larger faculty, better equipped facilities, and a better stocked library; and students were better trained in English in high school and

used to working on their own at the university. Over the years, I myself changed with the changes in Korea and Sogang and through contact with the many Sogang and St. Ignatius Night School students whom I came to know and love. When retirement came in 2001, I wanted to continue teaching; but I felt that Sogang no longer needed me. It had many excellent teachers and students who knew how to study and explore things on their own. So when I was invited to teach English majors in Chengdu, China, I decided to give it a try. Sufficient teachers and library facilities were lacking there, and students were the unsophisticated type I had known at Sogang thirty years earlier. Though I have come to know and love many Chinese students over the years, they are generally more difficult to teach. This is due partly to the fact that their educational background is weaker and their social and intellectual horizons more limited. Many do not value intellectual exploration, moreover, and shy away from communication in general. The attitude of many toward human communication is that of a poem of Emily Dickenson. 내 사랑 서강 : 서강 영문의 50주년을 기리며

해에 서강이 개교하였으므로 나는 대학시절에는 서강에 대해 잘 알지 못하였다. 미국 유학시절 서강 영문학과 동문인 최해림 교수(전 심리학과 교수)와 보스턴에서 만난 것이 서강과의 인연을 맺게 된 계 기가 되었다. 한때 나는 병원에 입원해 있었는데 그때 병원에 누워있는 나를 위로하기 위해 찾아온 최 신숙원 명예교수

교수가 나에게 묵주를 선사하였다. 그런데 그것은 당시 서강대 영문과 교수이며 총장이신 Daly 신부

님이 교황님의 축성을 받아 얻은 귀한 묵주였다. 얼마 후 나는 미국에서 Daly 신부님과 뜻밖의 인터뷰를 하게 되었고 그 결과 서강에 발 을 디디게 되었다. 만일 이런 것을 인연이라고 한다면 확실히 이것은 범상한 인연은 아니었던 것 같다. 그 후 서강이 나의 almamater처럼 느껴지면서 나 는 서강을 진심으로 사랑하게 되었다. 서강 영문과는 서강의 시작과 함께 탄생하여 지난 50년 동안 서강의 대표 선수였고 서강의 자랑이었다. 많은 사람들이 ‘서강’ 하면 영 어영문학과를 연상시켜왔다. 초창기의 Fr. Daly, Fr. Bernbrock, Fr. Bruenig 등의 외국인 신부님들과 김용권, 김태옥 교수님들과 같은 최고의 학자들을 교수로 모셔 와서 수준 높은 영어영문학 강의와 영어교육을 실시하였다. 그 결과 영어는 서강의 브랜드가 되었다. 학생

과 학생들이 정규 학문적 활동 외에도 다양한 과외활동에 적극 참여하였다. 예를 들면 당시에는 정말 드물었던 뮤지컬, 영어연극 등에 참 여하여 학과와 학교의 명예를 빛내주었다. 졸업 후 우리 사회 곳곳에서 중요한 일들을 하고 있는 영문과 동문들의 뛰어난 업적은 서강 영 문과의 위상을 여실히 보여준다. Xavier Hall 107호실, 이곳은 1975년 1월 13일 서강에 첫 발을 디딘 후 정확히 32년 반 동안 내가 살았던 따뜻한 보금자리였다. 4평 남짓 한 자그마한 방. 남향이라 언제나 밝은 햇살이 비치는 방. 작은 창밖으로 이제는 사라져 버린 ‘삼민광장’의 푸른 잔디와 그 잔디밭을 채웠 던 서강인들의 다양한 모습과 움직임이 한 눈에 들어오는 방. 그 방을 드나들었던 많은 정다운 얼굴들, 잊지 못할 많은 추억들, 이들을 어 찌 다 글에 담을 수 있을까! 내가 서강을 못내 그리워하고 못 잊는 이유는 내 인생의 절반을 서강에서 보냈다는 단순한 사실 때문만은 아니다. 내가 서강을 못 잊는 이유는 서강이 ‘혼’이 있는 학교라고 생각되기 때문이다. ‘서강의 혼’이 무엇인지 한두 마디로 명확하게 정의내리기는 어렵다. 그러나 ‘서강’

들 또한 서강의 브레인이라고 할 수 있는 수준의 학생들이어서 엄격한 학사관리와 영어로 하는 수업에 아무 문제가 없었다. 다수의 영문

하면 단순히 명문대학으로서의 명성뿐만 아니라 현실적인 가치를 넘어선 서강만의 독특한 이상적인 가치관이 있는데 나는 이것을 ‘서강정 신’이라는 말보다 마음 속 깊은 울림을 주는 ‘서강 혼’이라는 말로서 표현하기를 좋아한다. 지난해 5월 서강 50주년 기념식장에서 선포한 서강의 가치(자유로움, 구성원 존중, 열정, 수월성, 도전정신)가 서강의 기본 정신이며 혼 이라는 사실을 깨닫고 새삼 깊은 감동을 받았다. 나는 서강에 있으면서 서강의 교육적 환경이나 정책에 대해서는 불평도 하였고 비판도 하 였으나, 내가 인격적으로 대접을 받지 못하였거나 구속을 당했다는 생각은 한 번도 하지 않았다. 이는 바로 서강이 지향하고 있는 ‘자유와 인간존중’의 가치 덕분이라고 생각한다. 지난 50년간 서강이 구가해 온, 그리고 앞으로도 지켜갈 자유로움과 인간존중과 수월성의 가치는 “그대 서강의 자랑이듯 서강 그대의 자랑이어라(Be as proud of Sogang as Sogang is proud of you)”는 서강의 표어에 그대로 드러나 있다. 나는 이 표어가 정말 좋다. 이 표어 를 볼 때마다 학생들 하나 하나가 진정 소중하게 느껴지면서 나 또한 그들의 자랑이 되어야 한다는 다짐을 하곤 했다. 이 표어 덕분에 나는 서강에서 많은 학생들과 좋은 관계를 맺었고 지금도 그들이 내 삶을 가득 채워주고 있다. 나는 정말 서강 학생들이 사랑스럽고 자랑스러웠다. 그래서 나는 선생이라기 보다는 언니와 누나같이 그들을 대하려고 노력했다. 그러 나 때로 내가 엄해 보여 접근하기가 어렵다는 평을 듣기도 했는데 이런 말을 들을 때면 “내가 얼마나 따뜻한 사람인데, 내가 자기들을 얼마 나 사랑하는데…” 라고 생각하며 섭섭한 마음이 들었던 것도 사실이다. 그래서 나는 나 혼자 학생들을 짝사랑 하고 있는 것이 아닌가 라고 생각하면서 의기소침한 적도 많았다. 그러나 나는 나만의 ‘짝사랑’도 즐거웠다. 사랑할 수 있는 대상이 있다는 것은 얼마나 행복한 일인가!

이 글을 쓰다보니 옛 학생들이 보고 싶고 그리움이 밀물같이 밀려온다. 각기 다른 개성과 매력을 지녔던 많은 학생들이 생각난다. 나는 다양한 그룹의 학생들과 교류하였다. 강의를 통해서 만난 학생들, 오랫동안 Sogang English Drama Club의 지도교수로서 만난 영어연극반 학생들, 도서관장으로 있을 때 만난 조교들, ‘도서관 이용법’이라는 교양과목 강의를 통해 만난 학생들, 도서관 근로학생들. 1975년에 시작 하여 지금까지 35년에 걸쳐 만나고 있는 제자들로부터, 가끔 만나는 제자들, 서로 마음에 담고는 있지만 오랫동안 만나지 못한 제자들, 다 그들 나름대로의 향기를 지니고 나의 마음속에 오롯이 남아있다. 서강을 생각할 때마다 나는 감사한 마음뿐이다. 하고 싶은 교육활동을 자유롭게 하도록 지원해주고 인격적 대접을 해준 서강에 감사한 다. 무엇보다도 내가 서강에 고마워하는 가장 큰 이유는 서강에서 만난 훌륭한 제자들이다. 내가 진정 자랑스럽게 생각하고 또 사랑하는 제 자들, 그리고 나를 사랑해준 제자들이 있었기에 나는 서강에서 행복했고 지금도 그들로 인해 보람과 긍지를 느끼고 있다. 이제 50년을 뒤로 하고 또 다른 50년을 향하여 전진하고 있는 서강대학교와 서강의 영문학과가 참된 교육을 향해 그 힘과 열정을 다해 Department of English

주기를 기원하고 있다. 서강의 영문학도들이 서강에서의 교육을 통해 참된 인성과 전문 능력을 갖춘 인재가 되어 자긍심을 지니고 주체 적으로 자신의 삶을 살아나가기를, 그리고 우리 사회와 세계를 조금 더 행복하고 살만한 곳으로 만드는데 기여할 수 있기를 바라는 마음 이 간절하다. 서강과 영문학과에 하느님의 큰 은총이 함께 하시기를!

나는 1980년 5월 7일 한국에 왔다. 당시 학생들은 민주 선거와 새로운 한국 사회라는 희망에 부풀어 거리로 나와 있었다. 10일이 지나자 광화문과 서강대학교를 포함한 대학교들의 정문에는 탱크가 있었 고 우리는 무슨 일이 광주에서 일어나고 있는지를 BBC 뉴스를 통해 알아보려고 했다. 시간이 조금 지 난 후에 나는 연세대학교에서 한국어를 배우기 시작했다. 나는 나의 전혀 한국적이지 않은 얼굴 덕분에 주둔하고 있던 탱크와 총검으로 무장한 군인들의 검문을 통과할 수 있었다. 그들은 혹시라도 학생들이

몰래 공부를 하러 오지 못하도록 대학교를 지키고 있는 것 같았다. 여름에 나는 처음으로 서강대학교에 와서 서인석 신부님을 만났고 Tracy 신부를 소개받았다. 그 당시 서강에는(대학의 총 학생수가 1600명 밖에 되지 않았기에) 불문과가 없었는데 1980년 9월 늦은 자락에 나는 불어 관련 교재가 전혀 없던 C관 안선재 명예교수

의 언어 연구실에서 불어를 가르치기 시작했다. 오랜 시간이 지나고 나는 최루가스를 즐기기까지 하며 창문을 깨고 깡통폭탄이 복도로 날아와 터져

X관 잔디밭에는 큰 데모들이 큰 확성기 소리와 함께 자주 있었고, 중간고사를 보는 동 안에도 교실 입구가 의자로 바리케이트가 쳐질 위급상황이 종종 발생했다. 불문학과가 생긴 후 나는 교양영어를 가르치다가 영문과로 옮 겨와 Daly 신부님 대신 중세와 르네상스 문학과목을 가르치게 되었다. 결국 나는 중세와 르네상스 문학 분야의 교수가 되었다. 그 당시의 생활은 내가 1969년 Taize 지방에서 수사가 되었을 때 생각했던 나의 삶과는 전혀 다른 모습이었다. Taize는 동부 프랑스의 아주 작은 마을 이름이고 전쟁 중이었던 1940년 한 젊은 스위스 학생이 기도와 다른 이들을 맞이하는 삶을 살기 시작한 곳이기도 하다. 그 는 비록 유명하지 않은 수도원이었으나 많은 청년들이 여름의 주말에 인생에서 신념이란 무엇인가를 더 잘 알기 위해 왔었고 나는 Roger 수사로 알려졌다.

를 굽고, 기도 중 오르간을 연주하며, 프랑스의 아름다운 시골길을 걷는 그런 삶을 살 것이라고 생각했다. 그러나 늦은 1976년 나는 지금 살고 있는 분위기를 바꿔보지 않겠냐는 제의를 받았고 이른 1977년 나는 남 필리핀의 Davao시 큰 슬럼가 안의 작은 집에서 2명의 수사들과 생활을 하게 되었다. 가난, 부패, 독재, 폭력 등이 매일의 일상이었으나 작은 친절과 그 빈곤한 이들의 깊 은 신앙 또한 그랬다. 그렇기에 나는 서울의 카톨릭 주교였던 김수환 추기경이 우리 수도원에 ‘젊은이들의 영적 심화를 위해 도움을 주십 시오’ 라고 요청하지 않았다면 어찌 되었을까 하는 생각도 한다. Davao에서의 생활은 우리가 떠난 후 더 잔인해 졌고 사람들은 더욱 가난 해졌다. 그러나 나는 서울에 있었고 승용차가 없었기에 아직은 깨끗한 도로를 고속으로 달리는 시내버스를 타고 다녔다. 버스 토큰은 75원 이었고 좋은 식사는 500원, 지하철은 1호선 밖에 없었다. 텔레비전은 흑백의 화면이 전부였는데 그마저도 일찍 끝났고 자정 이후에는 모두 가 집안에 있어야 하는 그런 시절이었다.

The Peace Corps allowed us back in as a family; something I don’t think it allows any longer. My wife taught at Ewha and I taught at Sogang. Our daughter was watched over by ‘k’un ajumoni’ and ‘chagun ajumoni’ at the Volunteer House although our schedules were such that we were able to take care of our daughter a good part of the day. Louisa soon began to speak, and her words were a mixture of Korean and English; these are some of the Korean ones I remember she had: ‘우유’ (milk), ‘yaki’ (the Volunteer House dog), ‘줘’ (give me), ‘엄마’

(mama). I had recently finished an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and I was ready to write my first book. My service at Jeju University included overseeing the first edition of “The Islander,” the college English language newspaper, which, I believe, still exists. When I went to the printer for that first edition, the English words were displayed vertically down the page as if they were ‘hanja’. We had a little better luck printing the first edition of the text I wrote, East Meets West. I still have first edition copies among my books and papers. I wonder what they would be worth on EBay. Hmm. We gave the printing task to Kwangmunsa, a printer not far from the U.S. Embassy and the Blue House. They did a fair enough job of it. As I conceived it, the book was to follow the life cycle from birth to death; the idea being that learning a second language is somewhat like being born into another personality,

another life, perhaps an alternative existence. The death part, well I didn’t work out well how one would die from his or her second language, although I am sure many of my students at the time thought they were experiencing something akin to death as I attempted to apply the text to their learning of English. That the text lasted beyond the time I was at Sogang (1973-1975) is something of a minor miracle to me. I tried hard to make the text interesting, using authentic language such as newspaper articles, incorporating poems and excerpts from literature, and most of all, using line drawings much the way a cartoonist does to tell a story that would be obvious to the learner because he or she could see what was going on. Here I must thank the husband of Helen, another volunteer who taught at Sogang; for it was he, I think his name was Jim, who did the drawings. Of the faculty, I remember well just three individuals, probably because I saw them daily: Father Jerome Brunig, who was, I believe, head of department when I first came to Sogang; Professor Tae Ok Kim, a gracious and human being as well. I remember sitting down at exam time helping with grading, amidst an array of suited professors and collared clergymen. I remember walking into the campus from the entrance one day. I usually just walked through the back from the Volunteer House. That day there were hundreds of riot police with their shields, masks and batons, surging against the university gates while inside those gates were Sogang students, many of whom I knew. When I think hard about it, I can still taste the tear gas that was liberally sprayed onto every campus at that time. Fortunately, Sogang did not get the worst of it; the worst was reserved for Seoul University and Korea University, for how could a school be among the very top and not have the most physical demonstrations and the largest number of riot police? I later returned to Korea in 1984 to study Korean at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul prior to assuming duties as the Branch Public Affairs Officer in Gwangju. I came back as a diplomat, and my Korean became much more

lovely woman; and Bill Burns, as hard-working and unassuming a person as I’ve ever met, a genuinely good

polished, but I did not have the same experience I had had previously as a simple English instructor at Sogang University. In fact, when I look back at my travels abroad as diplomat, teacher trainer, and Fulbright lecturer, it was always the times when I — and my family, which grew to three children — had the least that we enjoyed the most. But then, at Sogang, we really had a lot. We had the camaraderie of volunteers who were trying to put the needs of others before themselves. We had the daily hum of busy lives. We had the beauty of the Sogang campus in spring when the azaleas bloomed. We had the sense that we were part of a rising university. We had the affection of our students, a couple of whom remained friends for a long, long time. We had music, both American and Korean, as we sang and played to entertain ourselves in the evenings.

On the way to Vietnam, I stopped over in Korea in 1999 at Gimpo Airport, which seemed to have grown into a giant complex. I was waiting for a flight, biding my time in the hermetic vacuum of the business class lounge. I wondered what the world outside was like, whether I would still recognize certain landmarks on the ride from Gimpo to downtown Seoul. I wonder still. Perhaps one day I will find out. I wouldn’t mind teaching again at Sogang. Korea won my heart when I first landed there in 1969, and Sogang won my loyalty because of my experience teaching there. For this I am grateful. Our Peace Corps group went from the tropical breezes of the Training Center in Hilo, Hawaii to the icy winter of Seoul in January of 1969. Training had involved thirteen weeks of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Korean language and Korean area studies. This academic preparation did not prepare us for that first night sleeping in a yogwan nor the freezing air of our first morning in Korea. For a California girl, this was all very new. In fact, I saw my first snow fall that winter in Korea. In the years that I taught English at Sogang (1969~74), there were a Gay Garland Reed

number of Peace Corps Volunteers and Lay Missionary Volunteers who came

and went. Many of us lived in the Volunteer House at the foot of Nogosan at the back of the campus. It was a single story, tileroofed building with wooden floors, steam heat and showers. In those days the main source of heating for most homes was charcoal briquette (yontan) under the ondol floor, so by Peace Corps standards and local standards our house was warm and luxurious.

It is hard to imagine from the vantage point of 2011, but in those days there were very few buildings on the Sogang campus and our teaching building was not heated, so we taught in gloves. When it rained the road to the Sogang gate was a sea of mud and most students wore gomu-shin to keep their feet dry. The Wang-ja (Prince) Tearoom close to Sinchon rotary was a favorite meeting place, and this is where we drank coffee and tea in the winter and fresh peach or strawberry juice in the summer. It is where we listened to music and talked about life. In all, I taught for ten semesters at Sogang when it was still a four-year college. In the first two semesters I taught English Writing and Speaking to sophomores (35 students) and two sections of English Conversation and Reading to freshmen (about 21 students each). By the spring semester, I had graduated to four classes per semester, added a course called Literary Types and was meeting with over

a hundred students per semester. Over the years I added Readings in Literature, Interpretative Reading, Literature (Short Story & Poetry) and Literature (Drama & Essay) to the repertoire. By the Spring of 1972 I

freshmen and sophomores. Since the entire enrollment of Sogang in those days was approximately 1,500, this was a notable percentage. Father Jerry Breunig, S.J. was the Department chairman in those days, and his warm-hearted, if sometimes absent-minded, leadership kept us all on task. Much of my time outside of English classes was spent with the Sogang University Drama Club members. Part of the reason that I was assigned to Sogang was because my interest in theatre was seen as a good match with Sogangâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s flourishing drama program and its reputation for producing theatre in English. In the spring of 1969 when I arrived, Kevin Kerston was directing Oliver, and I was fortunate to have the opportunity to help with the choreography. Although I was by no means an expert, my four

had 166 students in four classes and in my final semester at Sogang (Fall 1973) I had five classes of

years of dance training and past experiences working in musical theatre in high school and college were seen as sufficient preparation to provide support in this area. The show was presented at the National Theatre in downtown Seoul and was considered quite a success. Some of the student actors in that production became well-known professors and businessmen. In 1970 I had an opportunity to act in an original musical called National Treasure 1970, a play written by Professor Gun Sam Lee. It was a comedy in English and Korean, and I played a Peace Corps Volunteer sent to a remote village. I also did the choreography for this production, as well as for others like Man of La Mancha, which was produced by the Drama Club in 1971. By far the most daunting project that I took on during those years was directing and choreographing West Side Story in 1972. With the help of John Mitchell, who served as producer as well as moral support, the production of this dynamic story of two New York teenage gangs, splashed across the stage at Mary Hall with a full orchestra and noteworthy performances from many actors, directed by Michael Mullaney, and I went back to the less arduous role of choreographer. On one occasion the Sogang Drama Club did a retreat in a Buddhist temple, and I still recall that some of the students had a difficult time eating the bland vegetarian food. They came loaded with jars of kochujang to provide the spice that they missed from home-cooked meals. As I recall, I was there a chaperone and Drama Club advisor. All of these experiences as part of the Sogang community are embedded in my being, and I am enormously grateful for the opportunity to have served as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Sogang in the early years of its history. In the fall of 2011, I had an opportunity to return. I had been back on the Sogang campus on two other occasions since leaving Korea in 1975. Now that I am well past my hwangap it feels less and less likely that I will be fortunate enough to retrace those steps, so I want to let all of those whom I had the joy of knowing as students, professors, priests, staff and friends that I am grateful for the wonderful memories and the time we shared.

Expectations were high and excitement was in the air in early 1974 when my new Peace Corps assignment began. I was a member of the English Department at Sogang University in Seoul. It was a new experience, a new beginning, and a whole new place to teach English. Following two years teaching in Korean middle schools, I was looking forward to teaching at Sogang. It turned out to be a wonderful year. Looking back at that time, many memories come to mind. A university is always an exciting place to be. Sogang was known as a progressive, Darrell J. Aherin

challenging and a prestigious university. The school was founded by the

Jesuits and attracted topnotch professors in Korea. I was assigned to teach English conversation and to be the advisor for the Sogang Herald, the English language school newspaper. What do I remember of Sogang after all these years? Certainly the students, the faculty and the Sogang Herald staff all contributed to a most memorable year.

The Students After completing rigid high school courses, the Sogang students were now free to express their individual ideas and personalities. And express them they did. Korean students always study hard and the university was no exception. But the students now got the chance to show their creativity. In English class we often played out different situations using English. My students had to be actors as well as English speakers. Right away the different personalities came out-the class clown, the serious student who did not speak until he was sure he had the perfect English sentence to use, the student who practiced at night and couldn’t wait to speak out in class, the student who enjoyed English and blurted out whatever came to mind. All of these students and many others made for very interesting classes. Department of English

The students were not afraid to ask questions. These were often about life in America, what American students did for fun, and sometimes politics came into the discussions. The students always had

Korean students loved to enjoy class also. Maybe it was the new freedom that the university brought, but the students loved to make each other laugh. A joke, a funny story, a silly song-anything to get the laugh. Koreans love to have fun, and this was encouraged in English language class. The students jumped at the chance to meet outside of campus at the local tabong, to continue English conversation. The Korean studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; dedication to learning English was impressive. Just looking at the class pictures from so many years ago still brings a smile to my face.

The Teaching Staff Sogang had an impressive faculty renown in their fields, and this brought a seriousness to the campus. The faculty expected a great deal from the students. There was also a group of Jesuits on staff. I was always envious because they all spoke Korean so well and they were such a fascinating group of international educators. The English Department was headed by a very dedicated priest named Rev J.E. Breunig S.J.. His dedication to Sogang was total and complete. I will never forget his warm smile and gentle countenance. The other staff members were Peace Corps Volunteers like myself and teachers from the business and military communities based in Seoul. There were also career educators who were devoted to teaching at Sogang. I was so impressed with this diverse group of people and the faculty

The Sogang Herald Staff Sogang Herald staff members were very memorable. I thought it was difficult to put out a newspaper in a foreign language yet they did so with competence and vigor. I enjoyed talking over story ideas with them and helping to edit their copy when they were on a deadline. I got to know these students very well and we often had social gatherings which brought much laughter and joy to us all. These events usually ended with loud and off-key singing. The editor of the Sogang Herald at that time was a very interesting student, and over the years I have managed to stay in touch with him-once meeting him in the U.S. and once in Seoul. I got to meet his wife and see pictures of his children who are now grown. The friendship made while putting out an English language newspaper has endured. I think of Korea and Sogang University often. It is an important and very special part of my life.

이 시는 이매자 동문('61)이 2011년 5월 24일에 본 편집진에게 이메일로 보낸 회고담이다. 이매자(Maija Rhee, 61학번) 동문은 서강대학교를 졸업한 후 Saint Louis University에서 영문학 석사학위를 받았다. The Michigan Quarterly Review, North American Review와 Kenyon Review 등에 단편소설, 수필, 시 작품들이 실렸고, 다수의 수상 경력이 있다. 현재 첫 번째 소설 The Voice of Heaven을 집필 중에 있으며, 위의 이야기는 Episodes(2010, 이매자 편집)에 출판된 글로서, 편집인의 허락을 받아 이 화보집에 실었다.

기억의 편린 - 70년대의 서강!

가 흐른다고 농담을 하셨던 기억이 난다. 신부님은 학생들에게 많은 이야기를 전달하셨지만, 정작 그 분이 남긴 진짜 메시지를 접할 수 있었던 것은 그 분이 돌아가신 이후였다. 신부님이 심장마비로 갑자기 선종하셨다는 소식을 들었을 때는 내가 뉴욕주립대의 영문학과 대학원에 유제분(영문 73)

서 수학하고 있을 때였다. 지금은 잘 알려진 작가이자 재작년에 고인이 된 장영희 선배와 나는 같은 학과에 유학하고 있었고 우연히 브루닉 신부님의 20대 초반의 사진을 볼 수 있었다. 사진에는 너무나 어리고 곱고

순진무구하게 보이는 청년이 있었는데, 우리가 알고 있던 브루닉 신부님과는 사뭇 다른 모습이라 숙연해졌던 생각이 난다. 영희 선배와 나 는 60년대와 70년대의 한국 생활이 외국인에게는 얼마나 힘든 삶이었을까에 대해 이야기했던 생각이 난다. 한국전쟁 종전 이후 60년대 한 국은 현재의 캄보디아를 연상케하는 어려운 상황이었고 한국인에게도 힘들었던 시절이었던 만큼, 신앙과 봉사에 대한 의지가 아니라면, 미국인 신부에게 참으로 고된 삶이었을 것이리라. 서강은 두 개의 얼굴을 지니고 있었다. 모두 알다시피 서강의 분위기는 자유주의와 개인주의적이었지만, 교육시스템은 매우 엄격했 다. 한 학기 내내 같은 자리에 앉도록 하여 대리 출석을 원초적으로 봉쇄하는 것이라든가, 교수님들이 학생들에게 F학점을 날리는데 조금

은 종교 교육을 강제한 기억이 없기 때문이다. 개신교 대학이라면 의례히 의무화했던 예배시간이 없었다. 그러나 자유로운 교내 분위기와 는 달리, 추운 겨울에도 개인 난방기를 일체 사용하지 않는 등, 학교 안의 예수회 신부교수들은 매우 엄격한 규율을 일상에서 준수한 것으 로 안다. 70년대의 대학들은 반정부 시위로 무척 시끄러웠다. 반정부 시위의 대표자였던 김윤 선배는 시위 도중 체포되어 수감되었고 감옥에서 도진 심장병으로 농촌봉사 생활 중 비교적 이른 나이에 세상을 떠났다. 영자 신문사의 신입 리포터 시절, 무척이나 나를 살갑게 대해준 편 집장 김윤 선배는 강력한 의지와 커다란 영혼의 소유자였다. 그러나 내 마음의 한 켠에는 따뜻한 이상주의자로 아직도 남아 있다. 서강 영 문과 71학번은 행동하는 여성의 이미지를 다양한 분야에서 유난히도 많이 남긴 학번이었다.

나는 수업 외 시간에도 작고하신 헙스트 신부님(Fr. Clarence Herbst, S.J.)과 파렌 신부님(Fr. Farren, S.J.)에게서 동기 김문숙과 함께 영어회화 를 배웠다. 지금처럼 영어교육이 자본화된 시절에는 꿈도 못 꿀 일이다. 신 부님들은 바쁜 중에도 시간을 내어 아무 대가도 바라지 않고 이 철없는 여 학생들에게 영어를 매주 가르쳐 주셨던 것이다. 그 영어는 나의 유학공부에 큰 힘이 되었다. 영어뿐 아니라 파렌 신부님은 윤리강의도 하셨는데, 칠판에 쓴 글이 아직도 기억난다. “The end does not justify the means.” 목적 이 과정을 정당화하지 않는다는 것이다. 윤리학의 핵심을 가르쳐주셨건만, 이 교훈을 제대로 지켰는지 모르겠다. 그러나 그 긴 세월이 지나도 이 메시 지를 기억하는 것을 보면, 그 윤리학 강의는 분명 성공이었던 것이다. 평화 속에서 잠드시기를… 나의 대학생활을 윤택하게 만든 도서관을 빼놓을 수는 없다. 1학년에는 폐쇄식 도서관을 사용했고 2학년에 지금의 도서관이 오픈되었는데, 개가식

도서관으로는 대한민국에서 처음이었다. 모든 대학생들이 우리 도서관에 와 서 책을 찾고 빌려보았다. 빨간색 카펫이 깔린 대한민국 최고의 신식 대학 도서관에 첫 발을 들였을 때의 그 기분이란... 폐쇄식과 개가식 도서관의 차 이를 직접 체험해 보지 못한 사람은 그 느낌이 어떤 것인지를 상상하기 어려 울 것이다. 도서관 카펫을 빨강색으로 선정한 것 자체가 그 당시 한국 대학 의 색조 문화에는 없었던 것으로 기억한다. 대학 학부 생활은 4년이지만 그 4년간의 문화와 정신 그리고 학문은 일생 을 지배한다고 지금도 나는 굳건히 믿는다. 70년대의 서강은 교수님들과 학 생이 지금의 여느 대학에서보다도 더 가까운 사이였던 것 같다. <서강 그대 Department of English

의 자랑이듯, 그대 서강의 자랑이어라>. 이 메시지는 한 평생 완성해야 할 숙 제라는 것을 그 시절에는 잘 몰랐던 것 같다. 전쟁이 휩쓸고 간, 지지리도 가 난한 생면부지의 한국이라는 작은 나라에 희망의 학문을 세워주려던 예수회 신부들의 그 따스한 자리가 아직도 캠퍼스에 느껴지리라 믿는다.

1978년 12월 초로 기억한다. 저 멀리 한강을 물들이던 평화로운 황혼도 왠지 그 빛을 잃고 바람에 쓸 린 낙엽들이 내 발치에 와 부딪힐 때, 겨울방학을 눈 앞에 둔 서강 캠퍼스는 스산하기 그지없었다. ‘FA’ 의 강을 무사히 건넜다는 나름 자부심(?)과 학기부터 밀려있던 레포트들 써내느라 모처럼 술집에 발 끊 고 혹독한 시간과의 싸움에 미쳐 있을 그때, 문득 운명처럼 시야에 들어와 콱!!! 박힌 신부관 옆 게시판

의 공고문 “TRY OUT”. 갑자기 심장의 박동이 빨라지면서 남에게 속마음이라도 들킨 양 얼굴까지 빨 개졌다, 가? 말어? 가? 말어? 가? 가? ..... 가!!! X관 301호실, 권경선(66학번) 선배님과 William T. Burns 교수님이 지시하는 대로 파트너를 바꿔가 며 받아 든 대본의 일부를 몇 번 읽었다, 최대한 감정을 살려. (그야말로 우스꽝스럽기 짝이 없었겠다) 김병환(영문 77)

이렇게 시작된 <You Can’t Take It With You(우리집 식구는 아무도 못 말려)>의 공연연습은 정말

아무도 못 말렸다. 만삭의 몸으로, C관으로 Mary Hall로 뛰어다니며 연기지도에 바쁘셨던 연출가 권경선 선배님(저러다 뭔 일이라도 생기지 않을까 우리 후배들은 정말 조마조마했었는데 다행히 공연이 끝난 후 즉시 순산하셨다), 복학생으로 기획을 맡았던 김명제 형(73학번), 형보다 우리들에 게 훨씬 중요인물이었던(?) “형의 여동생과 그 친구들” (옆 동네 무용과 여학생들로 우리들의 굳은 몸과 마음을 풀어주는 친절한 천사였던 가? 심한 고뇌와 후유증을 남기고 떠난 악녀였던가? 연습 전 매일 이어진 환상적인 섹시 댄스의 주제곡은 Bee Gees의 “Tragedy(비극)” 였다) 그리고 76학번 누나, 형들의 화기애애 내지는 느끼한(?) 친교 (자기들끼리 어찌나 친한 척(?) 하던지 사실 우리 77학번들의 가슴에 질

내가 할아버지를 맡고 딸 역은 연극반의 영원한 향단이로 탄탄한 연기력을 갖춘 권순우, 손녀딸 역은 서강의 몸짱 정인옥이 맡아 열연했 고, 윤혜정과 두 명의 이순재, 윤교찬, 조은성 형 등이 그리고 78학번 동생들이 참여하였는데, 소도구를 담당했던 박찬희, 김용래, 이선옥 등 과 홍보 포스터를 풀칠해대며 각 대학과 시내를 누볐던 많은 76~78학번 스탭들은 진정 이 공연의 숨은 주인공들이었다. 또한 배우들의 영 어발음을 교정 지도하시느라 그 겨울방학을 통째로 반납하셨던 파란 눈의 두 수사님에게도 지면을 통하여 감사를 드린다. 아무튼 1979년 봄, 성황리에 막을 내린 <You Can’t Take It With You> 공연은 선배님들로부터 이어져 온 “서강 영어연극”의 빛나는 전 통을 다시 한 번 대내외에 각인시킨 아주 성공적인 공연이었다. 누가 어떻게 깃발을 세웠는지는 모른다. 독재정권 박정희의 피살과 전두환 등 신군부의 등장으로 나라 전체가 뒤숭숭했던 1979년 겨울, 애잔한 눈매와 가녀린 몸매로 뭇 여학생들의 모성애를 주체치 못하게 했던 연극반 유재철 선배님(수학 71)의 소집을 명 받았다. 사실 1960 년 대 선배님들의 전설적인 뮤지컬 공연에 대해선 익히 들은 바 있었고 혹시 우리에게도 그런 기회가 주어지려나 하는 막연한 기대감이 없 진 않았지만 막상 재철 형에게서 <Fiddler on the Roof(지붕위의 바이올린)>의 공연계획을 듣곤 잘 해낼 수 있을까 하는 의구심이 앞섰다. 1972년 <West Side Story>를 끝으로 오랜 겨울잠에 들어간 ‘서강 영어 뮤지컬 공연’의 전통을 되살리는 의미 깊은 작업이어야 했고 노래

1979년 3월 Sogang Herald에 You Can’t Take It With You 공연소식

와 안무도 만만치 않았을 뿐 아니라 유태인들과 러시아인들의 전통문화와 관습 그리고 시대적인 배경에 대한 일단의 이해가 전제되지 않 고선 쉽사리 접근하기 어려운 연극이었기 때문이다. 한편, 당초 기획을 맡았던 채찬희(78학번)가 소용돌이치는 시국과 관련하여 바쁜 몸이 되자 기획은 김영준(74학번)으로 바뀌었고 예 산문제와 공연시한 등의 압박에 쫓기면서 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 당연한 얘기지만 노래와 춤 장면이 상당히 많았는데 음악지도는 Mrs. Underwood(역사책 속의 언더우드 목사님의 며느리?), 안무는 당시 주한 미군장교의 부인이 수고해주셨다. 물론 노래와 춤 장면을 만드 는 과정에 우린 때로 엄청 야단을 맞곤 했었는데, 우리의 능력에 있어서 희망과 현실의 괴리였다고나 할까. 어쨌든 천하의 Gentleman 재철 형의 자상하면서도 강한 추진력으로 연습은 한 걸음 한 걸음 앞으로 나아갔다. 내가 아빠인 Tevye 역 을 맡았고, 와이프 Golde 역엔 김명선(독문 72)이, 사랑스러운 다섯 딸들 역엔 조혜용, 김영혜, 김은래, 남윤미, 김미중, 방동주, 박선희가 참 여했다. 그리고 권순우, 류혜배, 민태운, 정해원, 이동근, 배성례, 오상훈, 장두현, 김헤레나, 박양우 등도 작품의 중요한 역할을 맡았다. 한 가

지 특이한 일은, 이 작품이 워낙 등장인물이 많은 대작이어서 훨씬 많은 배우가 필요했었는데 이를 고민하던 중, 그해 1월에 ‘Head Start’ 수업 중이었던 80학번들을 대상으로 오디션을 통하여 젊은 피를 대거 수혈하였으니 입학식도 하기 전에 선배들 틈에 끼여 연극연습에 구 슬땀을 흘린 귀염둥이 박선희, 홍기효, 한윤택, 조항제, 노형근, 권오성, 송치복 등이 바로 그들이었고 이들의 참여로 연습장은 더 활력이 넘 치고 가족적인 분위기로 내내 행복했었다. “春來不似春”. 3월의 Mary Hall은 결코 한겨울 날씨 못지않다. 노고산 산등성이를 깎아 자리 잡은 탓에 산기운이 퍼렇게 살아있는 데다 가 높은 층고의 깊은 그늘 덕에 그 차가운 기운이 어떤 것인지 아는 사람은 안다. 굳어가는 손가락 뼈 마디마디에 호호 입김 불어가며 연신 차디찬 피아노 건반을 두드려야 했던 김인옥(78학번)은 공연에 참가했던 우리 모두의 사랑스런 동생이자 언니, 누나였다. 1980년 봄, 마침내 연극의 막은 올랐고 그렇게 어렵게 어렵게 연습했던 <Fiddler on the Roof> 공연 결과는 한마디로 대~단했다. 매회 공연마다 관객의 반응은 가히 폭발적이었다. 당시만 해도 이런 대규모의 뮤지컬 공연을 접할 수 있는 기회는 서울에서도 드문 시대였던 것 Department of English

이다. 오랜 침묵은 깨어지고 역시 “서강 영어 뮤지컬 공연”의 DNA는 살아 있었음이 여실히 확인된 뜻깊은 공연이었다. ‘all-in’했던 공연이 끝난 후의 허탈감이었을까? 수업 사이사이에 이유 없이 모였다가 싱겁게 헤어지고 또 서로의 사정거리에서 서성이 다가 실없이 돌아서곤 했던 우리 갈매기들(우린 서로를 그렇게 불렀다, 뭔가 서툴고 둔해 보이지만 그러기에 오히려 한식구임을 거부할 수 없는 그 끈끈하고 미련한 연대감...) 눈부시게 황홀했던 남이섬 보름달 아래에서의 쫑파티의 추억을 가슴에 안고, 우린 오늘도 서로를 그리 워한다, SㅏRㅏHㅐ~~~ ㅇ

1980년 2월 입학식에서 수석입학으로 상을 받기 위해 한 학생이 단상에 올랐다. 지체부 자유 학생이었다. 당시 내 느낌으로는 거의 매 학년마다 지체부자유 학생이 있었던 것 같다. 그런데, 어느 해인지 한 지체부자유 신입생이 특히 눈에 띄었다. 휠체어를 타고 다닐 정도로 심했고, 뒤에서 아주 외소하고 주름이 많은 할머니가 휠체어를 밀고 다니셨다. 이 할머니가

내 마음을 세 번 아프게 해서 이들에 대한 기억이 계속 남아있다. 첫 번째. 버스를 타고 학교 앞을 지나가는데, 도로에서 이 할머니가 폐박스를 싣고 손수레를 끌고 가시는 거다. 손녀는 대학생인데... 쯧, 지체부자유 학생이지. 두 번째. 후문 쪽에 있었던 테니스 코트 뒤에 간이 건물로 지어진 학생식당이 있었다. 거기서 이 할머니가 그릇을 치우고 계셨고, 손녀가 수업 김경환(영문 80)

을 듣는 동안에 교내에서 일을 하시게 되어 다행이라고 생각했다. 그런데, 이 할머니가 학생 들이 남긴 짬뽕국물을 드시더라. 한 방 얻어맞은 기분이었다. 세 번째. 이 두 사람 옆을 지나 가는데, 그 여학생이 휠체어에 앉아 뒤돌아보며 그 할머니를 부르는 소리를 들었다. “엄마” 라고. 너무 늙어 보여 할머니인줄만 알았는데. 그리고 그 여학생의 “엄마”라고 부르는 목소 리는 왜 그리도 맑고 깨끗했는지. 고생을 모르고 자란 내가 지금 학생들을 가르치면서 측은 하게 여기는 마음이 이때 생긴게 아닌가 싶다. 서강대에서.

내 기억의 서강 언덕 김상범(영문 87)

설레는 가슴을 안고 시작한 대학생활이었지만 당시의 시대 상황 하에서 결코 만만치만은 않았다. 입학하기 전부터 터져 나온 박종철 씨 고문치사 사건, 호헌선언, 전투경찰이 발사한 최루탄에 의해 사망한 연세대 이한열 씨 사건 등, 그전에 볼 수 없었던 굵직굵직한 정치적 사 건들이 87년 상반기에 이어졌고 우리 학교 내에서도 당시 전례를 찾아보기 힘든 1학기 기말고사 거부라는 단체행동을 통해 그 민주화 열 기에 동참하고자 했다. 몇 년 전 후배의 결혼식 때문에 아내와 아들과 학교를 찾은 적이 있었다. 결혼식이 끝나고 대학시절 많은 시간을 보낸 곳을 한번 찾아보 고 싶은 마음에 ‘과방’에 들렀다. ‘과방’ 문을 두드리니 한 여학생이 문을 열며 누구시냐고 묻기에, ‘87학번 영문과 동문’인데 옛날 생각이 나 서 잠시 들렀다고 말한 적이 있다. 내가 60년대 학번의 선배님을 만나게 되면 크게 다르지 않으리라 생각되지만 그 후배도 다소 당황스러 워하고 어렵게 느낀다는 인상을 받았다. 사실 20년 이상의 선배라고 하면 선배라기보다는 선생님에 가까우니 왜 그렇지 않았겠는가. 후배 학생이 당황스러워 하는 모습에 과방 안에까지는 제대로 둘러보지 못하고 나왔지만, 나오면서 생각해보니 아마도 그 후배는 내가 87학번 으로 대학에 입학한 그때에 태어난 87년생 정도인 것 같다는 생각에 웃음을 지은 기억이 있다. 오늘도 내 기억의 서강 언덕에는 촌티나지 만 싱그러운 모습의 내 87학번 동기들이 강의시간에 늦을까 X관으로 뛰어 가고, 불량 맞은 독후감에 한숨짓고, 다가오는 퀴즈에 긴장하고, 게시판에 붙은 FA공고에 걱정하고 또 열심히 삼민광장에서 ‘님을 위한 행진곡’을 함께 부르고 있다.

내 인생 가장 행복했던 순간 홍승주(영문 89)

내 인생에서 가장 행복했던 순간을 꼽으라면 나는 항상 대학시절을 떠올린다. 삭막해져가는 내 가슴과 내 인생이 비옥했던 시절을 기억 하면 그래도 얼마간의 힘을 얻고 일상으로 돌아갈 수 있다. 문학과 인생, 우정과 사랑을 치열하게 고민하고 탐구했던 로욜라 동산과 도서 관의 시간들. 그 시간이 없었다면 아마 나는 훨씬 덜 중요한 가치의 홍수 속에서 길을 잃었을 수도 있으리라. 내 나이 40이 넘었지만 아직 Department of English

도 나는 햄릿과 갯츠비의 몇몇 구절을 되뇌일 때마다 숙연해지고 겸허해진다. 인생은 청년 시절에 내가 생각했던 것보다 훨씬 더 난해했다. 그래도 대학시절에 든든하게 축적했던 자양분 덕택에 어려운 매듭을 하나하나 풀어갈 수 있는 지혜와 뚝심을 얻었다. 내 후배들도 나만큼 애틋한 맘을 갖고 있을까? 사랑한다, 서강, 언제까지나.

특히 과를 넘어선 동아리와 과 안의 학회는 참으로 새로운 세계였다. 그것은 성격과 취향이 다른 사 람들을 하나로 묶어내는 연대였고, 무료해지기 쉬운 여유 시간을 남달리 보람 있게 보내고 있다는 위안 이었으며, 정기적으로 즐기는 레크리에이션이었기 때문이다. 새롭게 주어진 자유를 어떻게 사용하면 좋을지 알 수가 없었던 그 시절, 동아리가 밤을 새우면서 읽 는 로맨스 소설처럼 훌륭한 취미생활이었다면, 학회는 이너서클처럼 영문과 안에서 비슷한 생각을 가 진 사람들이 모이는 계기였다.

특히 늘 역사에 관심이 많았던 난 자연스럽게 역사학회에서 선배와 친구들을 만났고, 술의 종류를 돌아가며 마시고 토론했고, 많은 책을 읽었다. 내가 역사학회를 통해서 어떤 사건이 일어나게 된 원인 남 훈(영문 90)

의 아이디어나 방법론을, 나는 대학 시절에 자연스럽게 수련할 수 있었으니까. 흔히들 오해하듯이 패션은 감성과 디자인의 문제만으론 풀리지 않는 방정식이다. 특히 여성복과 남성복은 전제와 실천이 완전히 다르 다. 개성과 트렌드가 워낙 다양해서 한 가지 방향으로 정리되지 않는 여성복과 달리, 남성복이란 사회와 개인을 결합하는 의미가 중시되기 때문에 공통의 드레스코드가 부상하게 된다. 남녀는 서로 이해불가한 외계인이라고 할 만큼 DNA가 다르지만, 패션에서의 차이는 생물학 적 이유보다는 오히려 역사적 맥락에서 찾을 수 있다. 거의 모든 현대 여성복의 기원이 프랑스 루이 14세 시절에 그 뿌리가 닿아있다면, 프 랑스대혁명 이후 세계 리더십을 이어받은 영국은 그들만의 남성 문화를 전세계로 수출했다. 그래서 여성복은 마치 프랑스 사람들이 그러 하듯 시간과 장소와 나이에 따라 변화가 많고, 남성복은 전통을 금과옥조처럼 여기는 영국식 문화처럼 아무리 오랜 세월이 흘러도 초창기 의 모습을 그대로 보존하고 있는 것이다. 이렇게 여성복과 남성복을 전제부터 다르게 접근하고, 특별히 남성복의 해석에 역사적 맥락을 넣

족들의 복장으로부터 유래한 현대 남성복을 다루는데 있어 영문학도 몹시 유용한 학문이었다. 학생으로서 수업을 들었던 그땐 이런 진실 을 다 깨닫지는 못했지만, 새로운 시즌마다 영감을 얻기 위해 지금도 다시 뒤적여보는 토마스 하디와 찰스 디킨스와 브론테 시스터즈의 작 품들은 내게 빛을 잃지 않는 보석 같은 오아시스다. 그때 그렇게 어렵게만 느껴졌고 도망가고 싶었던 그 소설들이 지금 나의 커리어에 놀 라운 도움이 되고 있는 것이다.

Time always grows short for English majors at Sogang Sung Jin Yang(English 91)

I was, in retrospect, unbelievably lucky. The help came from the least expected place — my own seat in class. As you might painfully remember, we have a designated seat system aimed at preventing terribly busy students from engaging in irregular activities. The seat I took for Background to English Literature taught by Father Peter Fleming, S.J. was right in front of the podium. My ability of English remained poor, if not utterly terrible, so I had no other option but to listen to his lecture attentively, trying to figure out what in the world he was trying to say. And (please forgive my use of conjunction here, I know I must not start a sentence with a conjunction according to what I learned at Sogang, but you must understand that I’m still struggling to use English properly) something remarkable happened. I was hooked. His lecture was at once inspiring and entertaining. I found myself steadily melting into that seat throughout the semester as I absorbed his energetic lecture. In each class, Father Fleming gave us a lot of reading materials designed to broaden our views on the

literary domain, and he wrote all the handouts on his old typewriter. After a while, I came to know that he totally revised and reconstructed the handouts each semester in order to avoid staleness. I was eager to learn more about English literature, and Father Fleming kindly offered me a guide as well as encouragement that I badly needed. I was desperate. After all, time was running out as I was scheduled to serve in the military after the second semester of sophomore. Less than two months before his death, Father Fleming wrote a letter to me, still stuck in the military, and revealed that he was arranging an exchange student program for me. Yes, the only reason why I studied almost like a bulldozing machine without a brake at a small college in Vermont as an exchange student in 1996 was that I did not want to waste any minute, or second, of my precious time secured by Father Fleming.

Ability without a good character will prove to be useless in the long run.” Considering what I received from English professors at Sogang, I think I’m a bad student because I have failed to meet their expectations in many ways. My limitation notwithstanding, I’m a good student, or good English major, at least on one count: I firmly believe that Sogang’s great professors will continue to help English majors (or whatever name today’s equivalent department has) to appreciate the beauty of literature and ponder the mystery of human desire and limitation. you mentioned at the end of the final letter? Perhaps you might have forgotten the sentence armed with a double entendre, so here it is: “The time grows short — and we shall see each other once again.” All my love

재밌어서 그랬을 뿐 정임순(영문 91)

서강대 재학시절은 여태까지의 인생에 있어 누가 시켜서 하는 것보다 내가 하고 싶은 것에 가장 많은 시간을 쓸 수 있었던 유일한 시기였다. 하지만 감옥 같던 고3 시절을 뚫고나와 안착했던 대학 신입시절이 처음부터 즐겁기만 한 것은 아니었다. 나는 지금도 가끔 무언가 걱정거리가 생기면 찾 아오는 악몽이 있다. 아주 넓다고 할 수 없는 캠퍼스인데도 다음에 가야 할 강의실을 못 찾고 헤매는 꿈, 이미 시험이 시작되었는데도 늦어서 맘 졸이며 강의실을 찾는 꿈, 그렇게 받아 든 시험지엔 알 수 없는 문제만 가득한 꿈… 이런 저런 낙오자가 되고 마는 배경이 고등학교가 아니고 늘 대학교였던 이유. 고등학교와는 사뭇 다른 드넓은 자율과 선택의 바다에 내던져진 두려움이 아직 햇병아리 신입 생인 나에겐 너무도 컸기 때문이 아닐까 한다. 서울에 집이 있는데도 1학년 첫 방학 때 “너 집에 안 내려갔니? 집이 지방 아니었니?”가 선배님들 의 인사였던 것처럼, 난 스타일도 정신적 성숙도도 고등학생의 그것을 크게 벗어나지 못했다. 그러나 어느덧 나는 내 원하는 바를 감지하는 비상한 감각 과 행동력을 무기 삼아 서강 캠퍼스가 아담해서 다행이야! 하면서 종횡무진 누비던, 누구보다 뒤지지 않는 바쁜 대학생활을 하게 되었다. 내가 속했던 모임에선 영화 감상과 토론, 영화이론과 영화사 공부에만 만

족하지 못하고 소형영화 제작을 위한 실천적인 방법들을 구하려 했다. 실제 로 모임에서 16mm 단편영화 2 편을 만들었을 때 나는 촬영을 맡았었다. 스틸 사진 촬영기법과 16mm 필름 동영상 카메라 조작법을 배워야 했다. 암빽이라 고 불렀던 검정색 천가방 속에 카메라와 필름, 손만 집어넣어 손감각 하나만 으로 16mm 필름을 교체하는 일은 식은땀을 쏟게 할 정도로 꽤 힘든 일이었 다. 빛이 조금이라도 새어 들어가면 몇 만원씩 하는 새 필름 하나가 통째로 버려지고, 행여 필름을 잘못 끼워 넣어도 카메라 안에서 망가져 버리기 때문이다. 그러나 스틸사진이든 동영상이든 카메라가 주는 재미는 영화와 결부되어 또 다른 엄청난 매력을 내게 주었다. 내가 얼마 나 사진을 좋아하게 되었는지는 부끄럽지만 서강대 재학시절 내가 받은 유일한 A+ 점수과목이 사진학개론 하나였음이 증명한다. 그때야 아날로그 카메라 시절이다 보니 슬라이드 필름 인화를 위해 하교 후 충무로에 자주 드나들었던 기억이 난다 Department of English

서강대 영문과 50주년 소감 이다인(영미어문 08)

수업을 들었던 것과, 장영희 교수님의 수업에서만 해볼 수 있는 영어연극을 같은 과 친구들과 함께 처음 경험해 본 것이었다. 각 조가 몇 주간 준비한 영어연극을 다산관 앞에서 함께 보고 웃으면서 보낼 수 있었던 입학 첫 해의 첫 학기는 장영희 교수님의 밝은 미소와 함께 기억된다. 단순히 영문학 작품을 읽고 분석만 하는 것이 아니라 직접 이야기를 만들고 극을 구성하며 자 연스럽게 영문학에 대한 관심도 높이고 어색할 수 있는 신입생들이 우정을 쌓을 수 있는 기회 를 마련해 주셨던 것이 장영희 교수님만의 환영 방식이자 제자들에 대한 사랑이었다. 개교 50주년을 넘어서 서강대학교와 서강대학교의 대표 학과라고 할 수 있는 영문학과가 앞으로도 학생들에 대한 관심과 사랑으로 개 인이 아닌 ‘우리’를 생각하며 살아갈 수 있는 인재들을 많이 배출할 수 있기를 바란다. 또한 우리는 서강대학교의 학생으로서 학문적 성취 뿐만 아니라 인문학적 소양까지 꾸준히 길러나감으로써 나와 우리를 생각할 줄 아는 학생이 되어 사회에 나가는 것이 우리가 가져야 할 목 표 중의 하나라고 생각한다. 사랑과 믿음이라는 교육이념 아래 또 다른 50년이 흐를 때까지 우리가 서강의 자랑이듯, 서강도 우리의 자랑 으로서 더욱 큰 발전을 이루기를 바란다.

지난 1960년 서강대학교와 함께 시작한 영문과는 항상 서강대학교 역사의 선두에 있었습니 다. 영문과는 서강대학교가 한국의 대표 대학교로서 성장하는데 가장 큰 공헌을 했습니다. 이제 서강대학교는 50주년을 계기로 새로운 도약의 역사를 힘차게 시작했습니다. 특별한 서강대학교 의 발전에 영문과 가족 모두가 함께해 주시기를 부탁드립니다.

전 문과대학장

서강대학교의 영문과는 서강대학교의 대표 학과이자 한국의 영어영문학을 대표하는 학과였 습니다. 그리고 그 영광이 지금도 계속되고 있지만, 80년대에서 90년대 시기에는 서강대학교 의 교육의 정체성이 제대로 자리 잡지 못하면서 영문과도 똑같은 정체를 겪었습니다. 비단 영문 과뿐만 아니라 서강대학교 전체가 그런 정체를 겪었습니다. 영문과에 과제가 있다면, 첫째 과제 는 ‘어떤 학생들을 길러낼 것인가’라는 문제라고 생각합니다. 그리고 둘째 과제는 ‘어떤 방법으 로 교육할 것인가’라는 점이라고 생각합니다. 다시 말해, 새 시대의 요구에 맞추어서 영어영문학 교육의 목적과 방법을 정립하는 것 이 중요합니다. 단, 영문학 교육은 과거에 초점을 두지 말고 변화하는 환경과 학생들의 요구를 수용해 새로운 프로그램들을 만들어 Department of English

내야 할 것입니다. ‘온고지신’의 정신으로 이미 구축해 놓은 전통을 바탕으로 새 시대의 요구에 맞추어 변화해 나간다면 영문과의 미 래는 밝을 것입니다.

김용권

서강대 영어영문학과는 국내의 다른 주요대학들보다 10년 내지 15년 뒤늦게 시작하였으면서 도 지난 50년 동안 가장 혁신적이고 선도적인 학과로 평가받아 왔습니다. 무엇보다도 서강대 졸 업생들이 뛰어난 영어 실력을 바탕으로 사회의 다방면에서 눈부신 활동과 인상적인 업적을 올 리고 있는 것이 그러한 평가의 한 근거가 되었으리라 생각합니다. 교육과 학습환경이 초창기에 비해 훨씬 향상된 지금 학생들의 영어능력은 더욱 증진되리라고 봅니다. 이왕이면 학생들의 영 어능력이 bilingual competence에 이르도록 더욱 노력하기를 바랍니다.

50년을 더한 역사를 가지고 있는 것이라고 볼 수 있습니다. 정말 굉장한 전통을 가지고 있는 것 입니다. 앞으로 우리학교는 세계 시민으로서의 책임감과 자각을 가진 인재를 길러내는 것이 중 요합니다. 서강대학교는 개인적 차원의 발전을 넘어서 사회와 세계 문제에 대한 관심을 가지고 지식인으로서 참여하고 문제를 해결하기 위해 행동하는 인재를 키워야 하고 학생들 또한 그렇 게 되기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 이는 ‘공동체의 영성’을 위한 삶으로도 표현될 수 있습니다. 개인의 영성을 넘어서 모두를 끌어안을 수 있으며, 공동체의 구성원으로서 공동체의 영성을 추구할 줄 아는 사람이 되는 것이 중요합니다. 이것이 바로 남과 더불어 사는 삶 이며, 예수회의 초심이기도 합니다. 그러므로 저는 50주년을 맞은 서강대학교와 서강대학교 학생들이 제가 지금까지 언급한 중요한 가치들을 품고서 지구촌의 문제를 해결하는 역군으로서 성장해 나가기를 소망합니다.

영문과가 영미어문과 미국문화로 나뉠 당시, 저는 문학 공부하는 사람의 입장으로서 과가 나 뉘면, 문학을 접할 수 있는 기회가 줄어들지 않을까 하여 우려했던 것도 사실입니다. 과를 나눈 다고 해서 영어를 더 잘하게 될 것이라는 보장도 없고, 자기 전공이 무엇인지에 대해 확실히 다 지고 졸업할 기회가 줄어드는 것이 아닌가라는 생각을 했습니다. 학생들에게 부탁하고 싶은 것 은 대학생으로서 하고 싶은 일도 할 일도 많지만, 학생으로서 공부를 열심히 했으면 좋겠다는 생 각을 합니다. 졸업을 하고 보면, 학부 공부도 결국 지식의 기초를 다지는 교양 공부라고 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 교양이 바탕이 되지 않으면, 계속 공부를 해 나가야 할 경우에 어려움이 있을 수 있습니다. 그리고 학부 때 공부했던 것이 가장 오래 남으며, 사회에 진출 해서도 도움이 되기 때문에 학생들이 적극적인 태도로 학업에 충실히 임했으면 좋겠습니다. 특히, 영문과 학생들의 경우, 문학 작품 을 제대로 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있는 날카로운 통찰력과 창의적인 생각을 기르기를 바랍니다.

신숙원 명예교수

서강대학교가 앞으로의 50년 동안 추구해야 할 가치를 보니, ‘자율성’, ‘구성원 존중’, ‘수월성’, ‘창의성’, 그리고 ‘도전 정신’이 있었습니다. 그 중에서 자율성과 구성원 존중이라는 가 치가 마음에 와 닿았습니다. 그래서 모든 개인이 자신의 고유한 품성과 재능을 잘 발견하고 키워 서 이 세상에 하나뿐인 사람으로서 사회에 도움이 되는 사람이 되기를 바랍니다. “성공이란 내 가 있음으로 해서, 누군가 하나라도 행복해지고, 내가 태어나기 전보다 더 좋은 사회를 만드는 Department of English

데 도움이 되면, 그것이 바로 성공이다”라는 말이 있는데, 저도 이에 공감합니다. 문학이나 언어를 공부한다는 것은 단순히 언어만 을 외운다는 것이 아니라, 타 문화를 이해하고 수용하고 포용하는 힘을 기르는 과정이기 때문에 우리 문화에 대한 이해력도 중요한 것입니다. 오늘날을 글로벌 시대라고 하듯이 나와 세계를 함께 수용하고 이해하는 능력을 키워서 삶의 목표를 이루고 공동체의 일 원으로서 타인을 위해서도 나눌 줄 아는 인재가 되기를 바랍니다. 앞으로 서강대학교가 더욱 더 좋은 학교로 성장하기를 바랍니다.

quality and academic standards at least in the West and in the United States. Sogang seems to be true in the case of Sogang, too. It was very small and the quality was excellent. And, even though Sogang is becoming larger, and I hope it will continue to have the same small school values and standards. Michael Devine: I am very proud of the fact that I had a chance to play some small role in the development of Sogang during its early years. I think, in general, the university has been moving in the right direction, adapting to a changing situation in Korea, both economic and political realities that have come about. 저는 경영학 과목을 가르치지만, 경영학 수업에 영문과 학생들이 올 경우 항상 물어보고 챙깁 니다. 사회적으로 영문과에 대한 인식이 변한 것은 사실이지만, 과거부터 서강대 영문과는 서강 대학교의 자랑이었습니다. 중요한 것은 영문과에서 얻은 소양들이 학생들이 사회에 나가 어떤 일 을 하더라도 큰 자산이 될 것이라는 점입니다. 영문과 교수님들이셨던 신부님들이 보여주셨던 배 려와 헌신적인 사랑이 밑바탕이 되어 우리는 한 식구라는 의식이 형성되었고, 그분들의 헌식적 사랑이 현재의 서강대 영문과를 존재하게 한 것임을 학생들은 잊지 말아야 할 것입니다.

전성빈 동문(71학번, 경영전문대학원 교수)

서강대학교는 과거부터 이미 국제화 된 학교였고, 제가 학교를 다닐 때는 영문과뿐만 아니라 철학과 인류학까지 영어로 수업을 들었습니다. 현재 총장님을 비롯하여 많은 분들이 다시 국제화 하기 위한 움직임을 보여주고 있는 것은 바람직하다고 생각하며, 과거의 국제화 수준에 도달하는 것이 중요한 과제라고 생각합니다. 서강대 영문과는 과거부터 서강대학교의 간판 학과였고 앞으 로도 그러한 자부심과 명성이 이어지기를 바랍니다. 단, 옛날의 추억에 의존하거나 머무르는 것 Department of English

유영두 동문(76학번)

다니던 시절, 운동장에서 운동을 하곤 했는데, 그 때는 잔디가 아니라 흙으로 된 바닥이었기 때문 에 학생들이 종종 다치기도 했었습니다. 그래서 그 당시 제가 농담으로 졸업을 해서 기회가 되면, 운동장에 잔디를 깔겠다고 했었는데, 이번에 그 기회가 생기게 되어 서강대 영문과 이름으로 운 동장을 새로 단장할 수 있게 되어 보람을 느꼈습니다. 이제 학생들도 안전하게 운동을 할 수 있게 되고, 학교 분위기도 밝아진 것 같아 기쁩니다. 저는 서강대학교에서 공부할 수 있었다는 점에 자부심을 느끼고, 또 다른 방식으로 제가 서강 대학교에 기여할 수 있는 기회가 생겼으면 좋겠습니다. 마지막으로 서강대학교의 구성원들이 화 합하여 서강대학교의 좋은 전통을 이어나가길 바랍니다.

제가 군대 제대 후 복학을 해서 현재의 하비에르 인문관에서 공부를 했었습니다. 제가 학교를

서강대학교가 50주년을 맞이하게 되었는데, 재학생으로서 이런 뜻 깊은 시기에 함께 하게 되 어 영광입니다. 학부 때 국문과 학생이었던 저는 지금 곤자가가 생기면서 사라진 삼민 광장에서 쉬는 시간이면 친구들과 함께 이야기도 하고, 밥도 같이 먹으며 즐거운 시간을 보냈었습니다. 그 리고 수업 시간에는 날씨가 좋으면 교수님과 함께 야외 수업도 했었는데, 제가 게임에 져서 벌칙 으로 삼민 광장에서 굴렀던 추억도 떠오릅니다. 그 외에 삼민 광장은 동아리와 학회들의 모임 장 소이기도 했습니다. 지금은 사라져 버린 탓인지 그 때의 추억들이 더욱 깊게 남아 있습니다. 서강 대학교와 영문과가 50주년의 뜻 깊은 해를 맞이하게 된 것은 저희 이전에 학교에 몸담고 계셨던 선배님들과 교수님들 덕분이라고 생각합니다. 그 분들의 노력이 헛되지 않게 앞으로도 서강대학 교가 계속해서 발전해 나갈 수 있도록 재학생으로서 열심히 노력하겠습니다. 미래의 서강 영문학 과의 100주년, 150주년을 기대하며 최선을 다하겠습니다.

2009년 초겨울. 서강대 영문과 동문회(서영회)의 임원들과 함께 기금모금에 대한 회의를 마칠 무렵, 2010년 4월이면 우리 학교와 영문과가 50주년을 맞이하게 되는데 영문과 50년을 기념하는 화보문집을 만들면 어떻겠느냐고 불쑥 제안했다. 모두들 이구동성으로 “만들자,” “재미난 그림책처럼 만들자,” “자꾸 보고 읽고 싶게 만들자,” “그때 그 시절의 회고담과 사진 을 모으자,”.... 우리 서강 영문의 화보문집은 이렇게 시작되었다.

2010년 4월18일. 서강대 영문과 탄생 50주년을 기념하는 성대한 모임들이 이곳저곳에서 열렸다. 우리의 화보문집 편집진은 아직 회고담과 옛 사진들을 기다리고 있었다. 서강옛집 과 서영회 홈페이지에 여러 차례 공지했지만 글과 사진 모으는 일은 생각만큼 쉽지 않았다. 2010년 늦가을. 전전긍긍 하던 끝에 초대 총장, 영문과 초대 학과장이셨던 Fr. John P. Daly, S.J. 신부님, 제2대 학과장 Fr. John E. Bernbrock, S.J.신부님을 위시하여 영문과 전 임교수님들께 서강대 영문과 탄생에 대한 회고담을 부탁 드렸다. Fr. John E. Bernbrock, S.J. 신부님, 김용권 교수님, 김태옥 교수님, 이태동 교수님, Fr. Daniel Kister, S.J. 신부님, Fr. Robert K. McIntosh, S.J. 신부님, William T. Burns 교수님, 신숙원 교수님으로부터 회 고담과 사진들이 도착하기 시작했다. 또한 Fr. John E. Bernbrock, S.J. 신부님의 제안대로 John L. Mitchell 퇴임교수님 (옛 예수회 신부), William H. Quiery (나중에 William Cleary로

개명, 옛 예수회 신부) 퇴임교수님과 이매자 동문(61학번)과 연락이 닿았으며, 이 세 분은 화 보집을 위해 밤낮으로 헌신적으로 많은 정보와 사진, 글을 보내 주셨다. 동문들도 조금씩 회 고담을 보내주기 시작했다.

작년 2011년. 학교 본부로부터 낭보가 들려왔다. 화보문집 제작에 필요한 예산을 승인했 으며, 출판 계약을 할 수 있다는 기쁜 전갈이었다. 몇 달 후, 7월과 11월에는 1960~1970년대 에 영어교육을 담당했던 Darrell Aherin, Gay Garland Reed 등 옛 평화봉사단 단원들이 서 강을 방문하여 우리들에게 1960~1970년대의 옛 이야기를 상세히 들려주었고 회고담과 많 은 옛 사진들을 보내주었다. 2011년 9월 28일에는 Fr. John P. Daly, S.J. 신부님으로부터 옛 이야기가 담긴 귀한 글과 사진들이 도착했다. 그런데 3개월 후 12월 28일 새벽, 슬픈 전화를 받았다. Fr. John P. Daly, Department of English

S.J. 신부님께서 선종하셨다는 안타까운 소식이었다. 화보문집을 꼭 보여 드리고 싶었는데. 보여 드렸으면 매우 기뻐 하셨을텐데. 초대 학장과 2대 영문학과장 등 여러 보직으로 바쁘셨 어도 영문학 강의를 늘 멋지게 하셨으며 병환 중에도 우리 화보문집을 위해 생생한 기억으 로 회고담을 써 주신 Daly 신부님. 다시는 뵈올 수 없다는 갑작스런 슬픈 소식에 많은 신부 님, 교수님, 동문들의 아픔이 절절했다. 2012년 1월. 옛 신부님들과 교수님들, 동문들 덕분에 회고담은 많이 모았는데 아직 사진들

은 턱없이 부족하여 전전긍긍 하던 끝에 학교 기록보존소에 연락했다. 보존소에서는 화보집

을 위해 지난 50여년의 졸업앨범을 모두 빌려 주었다. 서너 달에 걸쳐 우리는 앨범 사진들 중에 영문과 역사를 대변할만 한 사진들을 선택하여 화보문집에 엮어 보았다.

2012년 10월. 화보문집을 이제는 마무리해야 하는데, 마음이 그리 편하지만은 않다. 100쪽 남짓한 작은 공간에 영문 과 50년 역사의 이야기들을 짤막하게나마 많이 보듬으려고 노력했으나 아직도 담고 싶은 이야기가 끊이지 않게 들려오 기 때문이리라. 본 화보문집은 영문과의 첫 시도이니만큼 너무 욕심내지 않고 영문과의 ‘탄생과 성장’을 위주로 이야기 를 풀어가려고 노력했음을 알려 드린다.

난 2년여에 걸쳐 도움 주신 서강 가족 여러분들의 회고담과 관심, 격려가 없었다면 화보문집은 완성되지 못했을 것이다. 선종하시기 바로 몇 달 전까지 여러 정보를 제공하고 원고를 보내신 Fr. John P. Daly, S.J. 전총장님(영문과 퇴임교수 님), William H. Quiery Cleary 퇴임교수님, 그리고 처음부터 끝까지 조언을 아끼지 않고 마지막 가제본까지 일일이 교 정을 봐주신 John L. Mitchell 퇴임교수님, 김용권 명예교수님, 김태옥 명예교수님, Fr. Robert K. McIntosh, S.J. 신부님 (영문과 퇴임교수님), Fr. Daniel A. Kister, S.J. 신부님 (영문과 명예교수님), 이매자 동문 (‘61). 바쁜 일정에도 늘 지원을 아끼지 않으신 이종욱 총장님과 강영안 학장님, 퇴임교수님들, 재직교수님들, 언제나 친절하게 정확한 정보를 베풀어주 신 서강대 도서관 기록보존소의 서진교 교수님, 김세준 동문 (MBA 14기)외 여러 동문들, 재학생들, 영문과 조교들, 숙제 와 시험 일정에 쫓기면서도 늘 밝은 미소로 제작과 편집 과정에 동참해 준 조서희, 강명희, 정희련, 유지혜, 이영주, 이홍 희, 김재은, 김다영 등 여러 학생들, 서영회의 한석동 회장, 정지택 사무총장을 비롯한 서영회 임원진, 그리고 늘 인내와 이해심으로 화보문집을 탄생하게 해 주신 학교 당국과 출판사 ‘(주)디자인그룹한’의 강민서 사장님과 김복수 팀장께 깊 은 감사의 마음을 바친다.
