Surfboards and glowing neon signs greet diners at the new Waīkikī Food Hall. Created by restaurateur Masahiro Hidaka, who divides his time between Kobe and Honolulu, this is the place for fun bites, drinkable art, Hawai‘i-brewed beer, and selfie stations. “I was thinking about young, female Japanese tourists. What is Hawai‘i to them?” says Hidaka. The result is this playhouse, designed by Hiroyuki Ogura’s Osaka-based firm Drawers, that Hidaka describes as “a little bit pop, a little bit cute,” with notable local food and drink (Honolulu Burger Co., Five Star Shrimp, Tap Bar, Surfer’s Café, Meataly Boys) and Japanese chains making their Hawai‘i debut (JTRRD Café, Milk Craft Cream, pork tamago onigiri). See p. 38 for the hall’s most photogenic dishes!
