Almond Blossom Vincent van Gogh Vincent van Gogh loved nature. Flowering trees were one of his favorite subjects. He painted a number of variations on this theme, including the painting „Almond Blossoms“. Flowering trees were special to van Gogh. They bloom early in the spring. So the tree represents the arrival of spring, new beginnings and hope. In his flowering trees, Vincent achieves a sense of spontaneity and frees himself from the strict self-analytical approach he followed in Paris. He uses the light, broken strokes of Impressionism and the splashes of color of Divisionism for a sparkling surface effect. The striking contours of the tree and its position in the foreground recall the formal qualities of Japanese woodblock prints. Almond Blossom was created on the occasion of the birth of his nephew and namesake.
