BOOT TECHNOLOGY
POWER SHIFT
This special Sole Flex area on Hawx Prime provides a more natural bending line of the boot, promoting better balance, better feel underfoot and greater control.
On our Hawx Ultra, Hawx Prime and Hawx Magna boots the forward lean can be adjusted to 13° or 15° or 17° simply by moving the power control up and down. You can also alter the flex index by +/- 10 flex points by adding or removing a screw. For a completely personalized set-up.
SOLES AND NORMS Technology has come a long way on the soles of ski boots. Our range features different types of grip pads, each designed for a specific use:
ALPINE DIN
INTERCHANGEABLE GRIP PADS
These are the traditional flatter alpine soles you’ll see on most standard boots. They follow ISO 5355 and work safely with traditional alpine bindings following ISO 9462.
For many of our boots we offer interchangeable alpine, WTR and/ or touring grip pads. But remember: not all types of soles and grip pads are compatible with all boots/bindings, even if they look as if they fit. Check the norm that they follow. Or if in doubt, ask your dealer or Atomic contact.
FREE/LOCK
FREE/LOCK 2.0
WTR
CANTABLE GRIP PADS
Featured on all Waymaker and Waymaker Carbon boots: lift the lever and the cuff unlocks from the shell for optimum walking, entry and exit. Press the lever back down and the cuff mechanically locks back for 100% power on the way down.
Featured on our new Backland boot, this is an advanced version of Free/Lock with 74° cuff movement and 13°-15° adjustable forward lean settings for skiing.
WTR stands for Walk To Ride and there are two parts to the technology: WTR Grip Pads on your boots and WTR compatible bindings. WTR makes walking in your boots easier and less clunky. With WTR Grip Pads the toe grip pad is rockered like a touring boot and the heel grip pad’s geometry is also adjusted, which makes walking relaxed and natural. The extra benefit is that WTR Grip Pads provide a safe release when paired with WTR compatible bindings. The safe release is certified by the TÜV, just like any DIN boot/binding combination.
This year we’re offering Cantable Grip Pads with Canting Shims that adjust the foot and leg-shaft angle of your boot. The shims are available in six angles: 0.5°, 1°, 1.5°,2°, 2,5° and 3°. We’re also offering full support to bootfitters including a balance board to determine what forward lean setting a skier requires, and a canting assessment tool to see how much canting a skier needs (see instore program). Please note: when you insert a shim the boot is no longer DIN-norm compatible. You need to router/grind the toe and heel lugs to bring the boot back into the alpine norm and fit into the binding.
TOURING
CARBON SPINE
FRICTIONLESS PIVOT
On Redster FIS, Redster Pro, Waymaker Carbon and Backland Carbon, carbon-reinforced areas of the cuff and shell provide increased responsiveness and power transmission while maintaining feel and sensitivity at the front of the boot.
Featured on Backland, this is a pivot with Igus polymer bushings that makes forward and backward movement of the cuff natural and friction free – making climbing and walking smoother and less clunky.
CROSS LACE
QUICK CLICK TONGUES
A new closure system used on Backland that wraps the foot from three points to hold it securely.
Featured on Backland, this easy system means you can switch from no tongue for climbing to a supportive soft or hard tongue for skiing.
WTR
TOURING NON-NORM/TLT-BINDING-ONLY It is important to note that many touring boots on the market, including Backland, are not in accordance with the Touring Norm or other established boot norms. In order to save weight and provide a more rockered sole for easier walking, these boots lack the traditional toe and heel lugs required to fit into touring frame bindings and “Multi Norm Certified” alpine bindings. As such, all Backland boots are only compatible with TLT-style pin bindings that use pins at both the toe and heel.

ISO 5355
Certified Touring Grip Pads follow ISO 9523. They have a rockered toe and lugged rubber soles allowing you to walk more naturally and improve grip on tricky surfaces. Boots with ISO 9523 soles are not compatible with traditional Alpine DIN bindings – even if they fit, the release values may not be consistent. So only use touring boots with bindings that are approved for boots following ISO 9523.
