Executive Director Todd Thronson Right now the days are getting shorter and the colorful trees have made for a beautiful fall. Before you know it our nighttime dreams of snowy days and nights will be a reality. I know this because here at Snowmobile North Dakota (SND) we have already choreographed several snow dance routines and have no doubt they will be successful. I will make sure to take full credit for any said snow when it does appear. You all can help by ordering your copy of the snow dance routines from the office and holding your own organized snow dance fest. If any of you need help organizing these festivals, feel free to contact us here at SND. We are very much in the know on this subject! We are often asked to explain the funding structure for Snowmobile North Dakota. I want to take this opportunity to give everyone a quick explanation for this question. SND is contracted by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department (NDPRD) to manage the state trail system. All grooming equipment is owned by the State of North Dakota, not
November 2017– Vol 43 No. 2
SND. Funding for equipment, program operation and safety programs comes from snowmobile registrations, gas tax revenues and safety course fees. It is important to realize that 80% of the funding for the grooming equipment comes from grant money from the Recreational Trails Program, which is administered by NDPRD. The SND Trail Program must secure 20% matching funds to purchase equipment and trail signing materials. These federal grants are applied for annually and when secured can only be used for trail related signing and equipment. For some further
clarification, reference the flow chart we’ve provided. Never hesitate to contact us or your regional board member with any questions. Hope to see you all on the trails this winter!

If your club is planning an event this year, please make sure to contact the office and let them know. They will put your event on the SND website calendar and put in a good word on Facebook. If you would also like to have enforcement there, please let them know. Dates to remember for this year. 2017 Convention is in Bismarck, December 16. Troy Klevgard President Hello All, I don’t want to sound greedy, but I would really like to have an average snowfall this year. I don’t think that’s too much to ask for. I’m not looking for record breaking snows with perfect temps for riding. I’m just looking for our normal 40+ inches of snow (Red River
memberships.
Joanne Seifert Secretary Overview of minutes from the October SND Board of Directors meeting. We continue to have good traffic with Facebook, Issuu and the website. Our most viewed pages are the trails pages and our grooming forms for the clubs. The resources SND provides to the clubs make is very easy to submit the necessary forms for grooming and trail maintenance. SND memberships should start coming into the office soon. It’s still pretty early in the season but soon all the clubs will start firing up and getting organized for the season and collecting

The guys from NDPRD reported that their new director Melissa is getting settled in. They’re scheduling snowmobile safety classes and getting the website vamped up for OHV and snowmobile permits for out of state and in state trail permits. They’re also working on the new permits for tracked dirt bikes which will be new this year starting November 1. The Trail Operations Committee encourages all the clubs to get ready to start signing their trail systems and reminds all trail systems to apply for an extension now if they’re going to be late getting all their signs up due to late harvests.
have said it before, if you have never attended a convention, you are missing out. They are always a lot of fun and there is really not a better group of people to talk to and learn from. The 2018 State ride is being held February 9th and 10th in Edinburg. Hope to see a large group at both events this year. It’s not about the mile; it’s all about the smiles.
Troy Klevgard.
Regional Meetings soon to discuss the new groomer tracking software and to show the trail coordinators the ins and outs of it. The 2017 State Convention will be in Bismarck December 15-16 at the Ramada Inn. Look for more registration info in upcoming Sno Dak News.

Laura Forbes Vice President Hi everyone, I have been driving around North Dakota this Fall and the trees look vibrant with all of the colors. Now it is time to get into shape so you can maneuver your sled around in the deep powder and trees or you can watch snowmobile movies and wish you can do what they do. SND staff and board have been working with NDPRD on different ideas for the snowmobile community. -First, tracked dirt bikes can get a trail permit online through the NDPRD’s website starting November 1st. This will be a trial run for the 2017-2018 season, this permit will allow tracked dirt bikes to operate on the snowmobile trail system. Once the season is over, we will then assess how the trial went with
November 2017– Vol 43 No. 2
the snowmobile community. - Next, this winter we will be setting up a test site to test tracked UTV’s, tracked dirt bikes and snowmobiles on groomed trails. During the convention, we will have a breakout session in regards to the tracked vehicles on trails. Other states allow tracked vehicles on snowmobile trails. From what I have seen they don’t leave deep grooves on the trails. I know some people are concerned because they are wider than a snowmobile and there will be times on the trail where the UTV and snowmobile cannot meet. Remember the UTV’s are no wider than a groomer and when we meet a groomer on the trail we need to move over. We would like your opinion, so please tell your local board member or better yet come to the SND Convention on Saturday, December 16th at the Ramada in Bismarck, ND. -When you are signing your trails and there is a trail that goes through a field and the crop has not been removed, then you need to write a letter or
send an email to Todd or Tari to apply for an extension. NDPRD have been working diligently to get more trails for ATV’s/UTV’s, in the State of North Dakota. There are trails in the Pembina Gorge and Lake Metigoshe. Now they are working on a trail system in the grasslands. If your club or association is interested in hosting the 2018 SND Convention or 2019 SND State Ride, please notify Todd or Tari. Lastly, Tri-County Trailriders is hosting the SND State Ride is in Edinburg on February 9th & 10th, 2018.

Everyone, get your sleds running!!! Hopefully everyone is ready for snow because I sure am!! That means the snowmobile season will soon be upon us! Hoping for a great snow year! Don’t forget, the convention is coming up next month on December 16th in Bismarck!

This year, we are going to try something new. The last couple of years, dirt bikes with track kits put on them have been all around the state. There really has not been a clear cut way to permit them on the snowmobile trail system. If everyone remembers, last year at the annual meeting in Bottineau, the board
www.snowmobilend.org
took a vote of the members and they agreed to allow only tracked dirt bikes on the state snowmobile trail system. So, with the Snowmobile North Dakota board and the membership’s wishes, we created a trail permit and we are going to run a test trial this season to allow them on the state snowmobile trails. We created a permit system which will be available to the public starting November 1st. The permit is $25 per tracked dirt bike. The permit is good through the snowmobile season which ends on April 1st, 2018. It will be available at www.parkrec.nd.gov. During the SND convention, we will have a presentation at the annual meeting as well as a separate session afterwards to discuss the trail permit and tracked OHV operation further. Don’t forget that anyone 10 and older, who does not have a valid driver’s license, is required to have a snowmobile safety certification card to operate a snowmobile on any public lands. This certification is obtained through one of our safety courses. Tari has been working hard at scheduling courses so check for one in your area by visiting www.parkrec.nd.gov or call the safety hotline at 701-328-5348. If you have any other questions please feel free to call me at 701-328-5357. Be safe and see you out on the trails when the snow flies!!!!

We always welcome new members. The next meeting will be November 3rd at the White Buffalo in Granville at 7:30. Come early for supper. The December meeting will be on the 8th of December before the Fun Run. The club members are planning to attend the annual Snowmobile North Dakota convention at the Ramada in Bismarck on December 16th. Hope to see you on the snowmobile trails! Dale Deibert
Rough Riders Snowmoblie Club Hello to all sled riders from the Rough Riders in Bismarck! My 3 year old grandson asked me why all the leaves are turning yellow, my answer was its setting to be fall and then winter. That was a mistake because now he wants to know when the snowmobiles are coming out so we can ride. 3 year olds patience isn’t the greatest, so he is asking everyday if it snowed yet. We have had 4 meetings already and a lot of things to do. Finished plans on the swap meet and talked about plans for a warming house. We also have guys fixing signs and, making new ones for the trails. There was an avalanche class that was located at Moritz Sport & Marine in October. By the time this issue comes out we are hoping to have started signing. Had the tucker started up a couple times this summer, while the SND office was organizing the storage unit. Hopefully the snow that’s happening out west is a good start for us in the Midwest for what the season will be looking like. Don Schmidt

Magic City Driftbusters When I woke up this morning, I had to flip on the deck light. The moon’s light was playing tricks on my eyes making my foggy morning brain think it was seeing the first dusting of winter snowfall. As I flipped off the light, I thought to myself, it is still too early for that anyway. Then on facebook tonight, a shared posting of snow fall at Trailshead Lodge. An early sign of a great season ahead of us? Could we be so lucky to have a good season this year? I haven’t cracked open a Farmer’s Almanac yet this year, and haven’t heard too much in way of speculation, so I guess, like always, we will have to wait and see. And keep the faith right? And even if Mother Nature doesn’t bless us with perfect riding conditions, we will make it work. Which reminds me of the last ride we went on last spring with a few club members, who happened to stop at our house on a weekend afternoon. Did I mention we live on a trail? And that we apparently give in easily to peer pressure? It was a great ride, not because the snow was great, in fact, the ride could probably be titled “Where the Snow Ends”. It was a great ride because of the fun we had as a group. Sure, I will never forget that off trail stretch back to Deering, but what I think we will all remember most was the adventure of it all and of course the people we shared it with. So as we all get back out there helping sign and shrubs those trails, tune up our sleds, and patiently wait. I hope that some great memories will replay in your mind, with the hopes of more great memories to come this year to remind us all of why we do what we do: the joy of the sport. For our club, we have started our season off with clean-up at the clubhouse and a Pizza Party. We replaced our building sign, so it is all shiny and new! Our first meeting of the season is to be held on our steak fry night for October. New members are always welcome! Magic City Drift Busters meetings are held at 7:00 pm the first Friday of each month from September to March. The clubhouse is north of Minot just west of Hwy 83 on 86th ave. A steak fry is held at 6:30 pm on the third Friday of the month. If there is snow and good weather, the third Friday of the month may be a ride night instead of the steak fry. If weather permits there are rides on Tuesday nights and on Sunday afternoons as well. Updates should also be posted on our Facebook page: Magic City Drift Busters Snowmobile Club. Jenn

Dale Deibert Region 1 Dale Deibert reporting from Region 1 of Snowmobile North Dakota from Surrey. The fall season is in the air. We had our first light frost on October 3rd and 4th. The snowmobile clubs in the Minot area have set their Fun Runs for the season. The Dakota Trailblazers of Surrey will have their Fun Run on December 9th and will end at 5pm at Big Reds in Deering, The Fun Run will have stopping spots in Surrey, Granville and Deering. The Magic City Driftbusters of Minot will have their Fun Run on January 6th. The Gasmann Coulee Cruisers will be on January 20th. It will end in Carpio. Other stops will be in Berthold and Burlington. I hope to see all of you at the annual Snowmobile North Dakota Convention in Bismarck on December 16th at the Ramada. There will be the Board of Directors meeting Friday night, annual meeting Saturday morning and signing and groomer classes in the afternoon. Hope to see you on the snowmobile trails this winter!
Joel Iverson Region 4 I just had to do it, I had to go online and look up the forecast for this coming winter. The first source I decided to check out was the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Known for their long history of giving somewhat accurate forecast I thought this would be a good place to start just to find out what we might be in for. What I found out was probably nothing to really cheer about but it may feel a little bit more like winter this season than the past few. What they are predicting are a few good shots of cold weather mixed with a few small shots of snowfall and an overall above average temperature for the season.
1
3
Not wanting to leave it all up to the Farmer’s Almanac I decided to also check out the AccuWeather prediction for this winter and they ended up being very similar. Some real cold temperatures with a few small amounts of snow and an overall above average temperature once again. So what does all this mean for us? It means we need to keep a watchful eye to the news and weather forecast, keep an ear to the radio and of course check out the social media reports as to where there may be good riding.
2
This is nothing new for most of us who have dealt with the lack of snow the past few winters. What we need to focus on is not being afraid to put on a few miles to get where we need to go. Living in the state of North Dakota this shouldn’t be that big of a challenge. What I’m getting at is that you shouldn’t be afraid to go to a different part of the state and check out other Trail systems. You may be pleasingly surprised at what you find. And speaking of putting on a few miles to get to your destination if you haven’t already done it by the time you’re reading this you might want to go out and kick the tires on that trailer in the backyard to make sure it’s ready to go when there’s riding to be done. Oh and most importantly, make sure the sleds are ready to rock and roll as well.
4
5
Well with any luck the forecasters will be wrong as they typically are and we will get an above average snowfall with average temperatures and we’ll all be living in a winter wonderland this coming season. Let’s pray that none of us get dumped on and get too much of a good thing like our friends in Bismarck area did last season and it gets spread a little more evenly throughout the state.
