Old tatty books are often forgotten about, they sit in charity shops or shelves of older relatives gathering dust never seeing the light of day. Find a way to re invent the old book into something new, spreading the awareness of a book that was once loved but now forgotten.

As this brief is about reinventing something old, to something new, the audience will be on the younger side of life, ranging from 18 - 35 years old. The audience will have a key interest in discovering new things, reading and up-cycling.

Create a range of items that will celebrate the old book in a way that will appeal to the audience and be something a bit different from a standard book.

The purpose of Old Book New is to highlight to people that there are some really intereting old books waiting to be found in charity and junk shops like little treasures. By making the book new it will then get a persons attention and they will pay attention to old books.

The context for where Old book New would be sold is in arts based shops. This is because I want the packs to be of limited edition, to make the buyer feel they have got something unique. Within the pack there will be something that will be editions such as a screen print, which will add to the feeling of having something unique. As well as selling the Old book New in old

ONLINE: Shops, there will be a small run given to the charity shop where the old book was purchased from in the first place (all old books will be found in charity shops), the shop will be able to decide how much they want to charge and will give 100% of the money.

SUBSCRIBE: For the initial concept I want to develop the idea of subscription. The most common thing people subscribe to are magazines where they know roughly what they are getting as they know the concept of the magazine. I want to create a subscription where by the person would get an element of surprise each time as they would not know what the book in question would be.

This would be A way of introducing the person to new things, it may broaden their horizon or teach them something new. The subscription would run every other month and be based on a different book each time. It will be produced in a fairly lo-fi way so that it would not cost the person too much money, but at the same time not cut back on quality or longevity.

To gain an understanding and enhance my appreciation for old books I went on a mission to discover and look at as many old books as possible. The things I was looking at were: Covers, stock, illustration, pictures, typography. It was really good to find some books to study in detail.

The Old Book New subscription will be a range of produces so I have researched into a number of feasible products that could be suitable for the pack. Such as zines, post cards and T-shirts.

This is an image I took whilst researching into book shops. Village bookshop is an independent store which would be suitable for Old Book New to be sold at. They sell an array of publications in all shapes and sizes at village ranging from lo-fi to luxurious. BRIEF FIVE

To add to the reminder that Old book New is taking an old book and reinventing it, the old book will be copied and then shredded, which will act as part of the packaging. This will be a reminder of that old book

Withing each pack I Want their to be a range that will remain constant with each issue. This will add a sense of unity between each edition. The range will be : one screen printed poster, five postcards, and a zine.

Another constant that will bring all the subscriptions together is the use of a boarder, it is visually recognisable and will make every edition of Old book New work together so that you can display the poster for example as a series. BRIEF FIVE

This is the finished pack for Old book New. The first book that has been reinvented is: Poems of Love, by Ella Wheeler Wilcox an old American poet. The pack would be packaged in a cellophane protector to keep everything together nicely whilst still being on display.

The zine features facts about the write of the old book, and also examples of the content inside the original book which in this case would be examples of poems. The zine pays homage to the old book celebrating and reinventing the contents. BRIEF FIVE

The poster will be a limited edition screen print that is only available through buying the complete pack. It is based on whatever the Old book is about, and will act as a series with other posters collected through the subscription

The postcards will feature illustration of some sort of what the book is about, they will also feature information about the book and could work as something you’d keep or give away to spread awareness of the old book. BRIEF FIVE
