Description: project is designing an addition to enlarge the Lai King Building, which is an Inpatient Rehab Hospital (currently 268-Inpatient beds) in the Kwai Chung district of Kowloon, Hong Kong. The site is very challenging with sloped topography and a very long and narrow shape. Zoning code parameters requiring setback distances and separation between the existing and new blocks, as well as an existing sewer easement have been challenging to resolve in the planning.

Yet, we were successful in arriving at various architectural massing and interior layout options that satisfy Hong Kong’s sustainable building design guidelines as well as the strict medical planning requirements of the city’s Hospital Association.

Wards to have access to Day Room

Nurses have access to Staff Service Lounge

Wards are placed around Nurse Station

Mechnical Core can be serviced only from outer corridor, to not disrupt hospital processes

Clean and Soiled Linen use separate Mechnaical core

Staff and visitors have separate entries.

Nurse Station is loated centrally between wards (to keep an eye on patients) and Staff Service (for refreshments).

Clean and soiled linen are handled separately to avoid contamination

Paths of patients, staff and visitors will intersect

Daylight must come into wards and corridors freely.

Dayrooms must have ample sunlight and views of greenery so must be placed in the corner

Nurse Station and Staff Service are connected to remote Nurse Stations.
