THE MATCHUP: Southern New Hampshire closes out the first semester when it hosts NYIT Saturday afternoon. THE COACHES: Stan Spirou is in his 28th season as head coach at Southern New Hampshire...he owns a 527-282 (.651) career record in 27-plus seasons at the helm...Spirou was honored as the New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year four times (1993, 94, 95, 99) and has led the Penmen to 14 NCAA Tournaments, four NCAA Regional titles and fourteen 20 win seasons...Sal Lagano is in his 16th season at NYIT...a 1988 graduate of Hofstra, Lagano has compiled a 214-219 career record. THE SERIES:Southern New Hampshire is 10-6 all-time against NYIT...last season the two teams met in Old Westbury, N.Y. and the Bears posted a 74-60 victory...the hosts shot 54.5% from the floor and held a 36-29 halftime lead...Kayvon Roberts paced four Bears in double figures with his 18 points and eight rebounds, while the Penmen were led by B.J. Cardarelli’s 13 points and nine rebounds, while Elijah Bonsignore added 11 points. THE PENMEN: Southern New Hampshire was topped by Merrimack 80-58 on the road last Saturday...freshman Rodney Sanders leads the Penmen with his 13.0 ppg average... Sanders is shooting 55% from three-point land (11-20) and also grabbing 5.2 rebounds per game...Mike Stys is scoring at a 12.4 ppg clip in his first season with the Penmen, while Elijah Bonsignore is adding 8.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game...Bonsignore is second in the Northeast-10 with 17 blocked shots...C.J. Marriro is averaging 8.6 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.4 assists per game, while B.J. Cardarelli is adding 7.9 points per outing... the Penmen are shooting .399 overall, .333 behind the arc and .658 at the free throw line while allowing opponents to shoot .407 overall and .301 behind the arc...the Penmen are scoring 65.4 points per game while allowing 64.5 while getting outrebounded 39.1-35.8. THE BEARS: NYIT has won three straight and is coming off a 92-87 win over Felician Wednesday night...Kayvon Roberts leads the Bears in scoring with his 17.2 ppg average...Roberts is also grabbing 6.9 rebounds per game...Phil Izevbehai is tied for the team lead in three-pointers with 16 and is scoring at a 14.8 ppg clip, while Azel Prather, Jr. is averaging 9.3 points and a team-best 7.6 rebounds per game, while Dominic Scurry is adding 8.6 ppg...the Bears are shooting .471 overall, .342 from three-point land and .694 at the free throw line while allowing opponents to shoot .436 overall and .290 behind the arc...NYIT is scoring 76.8 ppg while allowing 76.1 while getting outrebounded 38.4-37.9. WHAT’S NEXT: Southern New Hampshire is idle until Sunday, December 30 when it travels to Wilmington (Del.) to face the Wildcats for the second time this season...the Penmen return to home and Northeast-10 action Sunday, January 6 when they host UMass Lowell.
