“Sono un tennista. Ma un sacco di gente pensa che io sia un paio di scarpe.” Ecco, non si può dire che a Stan Smith manchi il senso dell’umorismo, o l’autoironia. Per fortuna, uno dei più grandi giocatori del tennis degli anni Settanta non sembra particolarmente deluso dal fatto che molti conoscano meglio le sneakers che portano il suo nome, piuttosto che le sue imprese sportive. Del resto, mentre il ricordo di un singolo uomo, in quanto irripetibile, inevitabilmente si appanna con il passare del tempo, quello di un prodotto eternamente riproducibile può essere rinnovato a ogni stagione. Ed è proprio ciò che è successo alle Stan Smith, rilanciate da adidas in pompa magna un paio d’anni fa e oggi ancora sulla cresta dell’onda come negli anni d’oro del loro primo lancio. Oggi vi mostriamo un paio di rare Stan, prodotte negli Stati Uniti (!) sulla fine degli anni Settanta, prima che il Trifoglio spostasse spostasse gli stabilimenti – nell’ordine – in Francia, Ungheria, Repubblica Ceca e Turchia nel corso degli Ottanta. Un occhio attento noterà alcune differenze nel disegno della suola e dell’intersuola, come il pattern diverso rispetto alle Stan Smith che conosciamo e l’arco plantare leggermente accentuato. Roba da intenditori, non a caso si tratta di un modello apprezzatissimo dai collezionisti giapponesi. 94

‘I am a tennis player, but most people think I am a pair of shoes’. Admittedly, Stan Smith has always had a powerful sense of humor and an ironic self-image. Fortunately, one of the greatest tennis players from the 1970s doesn’t seem particularly disappointed that so many people should associate his name more with the sneakers and less with his sports feats. After all, while the memories about an individual man (who is unrepeatable) are inevitably doomed to fade away over time, the memory of a product that is eternally repeatable may be revived season after season. And that is what the Stan Smith has recently experienced, because adidas relaunched this icon model in full trim a couple of years ago and today it’s still on the crest of a wave, as it was during the golden age of the first launch. Today we show you a rare pair of Stan, produced in the United States (!) towards the end of the Seventies, before the Trefoil decided to move the factories to France, then Hungary, then Czech Republic, and Turkey during the 1980s. An attentive eye will notice some differences in the outsole and midsole design, as well as a pattern that differs from the Stan Smith we all know, and an arch support slightly emphasized. It’s a model for the experts, and it’s no surprise that the Japanese collectors love it so much.
