TORREY NEWZ

obituaries

by Adus F. Dorsey II

I have always been one that believes that if you keep asking a question long enough you are bound get an answer. You know the old adage, seek and you will find? Well I have been working on just that for sometime now and I am to the point of cashing in. It really got going right before my trip to St. George where I was able to visit with Meeks Morrell and ask him a lot of the questions that have been troubling me for a while, many of which he was able to answer. Questions that have persisted on through to an unexpected but much needed trip to Salt Lake City where as fate would have it my God Daughter Mindee Mabey Elliott and her new husband Ryan were going to be speaking in their ward on Sunday. Church and court are two places that I don’t often find myself in but when I do I always—and I mean I always—learn something very important, and this time was no different. And I can’t think of anyone that has as much influence on my way of thinking about some of life’s most curious aspects as does Mindee, and rare is there a person that melts my heart like she can. I find it best that when I am going to court or church to sit in about the second or third row, close enough to see but not so close as to seem guilty

of something or look like I might be anxious to confess all of my sins, all at once if the proceedings were to get too slow. I am not going to pretend to know that much about the Mormon hierarchy but I am sure I have met a few and I only realized it later when something about the way they carried themselves or something about their demeanor caught my attention. The truly influential people in our lives are like that, my good friends Todd and Sheri Mabey, their kids and their folks are like that. They touch or say something to us in ways that leave us wondering what just happened, because we know something just did. Not so surprisingly we all have that ability, the ability to touch everyone in our lives the very same way, if we only would choose to do so. Anyway, it was from a talk from one such individual that my new to me and will be heavily scrutinized Son-in -Law Ryan referenced in his talk, a comment about faith that caught my ear and rang true. It went something like this, “ I am not asking you to be pretend to faith you do not have, I am asking you to be true to the faith you do have.” If you have faith in something it will happen, if you don’t it won’t.

We all have faith in something whether we want to believe it or not, take my word for it, you are doomed to shop at Wal-Mart the rest of your life if you don’t. Ryan went on to talk about many other things that I am sure were meant to impress me and did even though when he wrote them he had no clue I was going to be there. Whether Ryan realizes it or not he will be on family probation for he next fifty years, ten from me and the rest from Mindee’s brothers Nicholas, big Spanish speaking Michael, and well-armed Chris and his target shooting pals. (From the cupid-struck look still on Ryan and Mindee’s newly wed faces I get the distinct impression that Ryan has yet to truly understand or care much about any consequences, hopefully he will never have to. Upon my first impression and my undying faith in Mindee I feel Ryan will perform to the highest of his ability because there is nothing maybe about the Mabey’s.) It was actually Mindee’s Sunday talk that spoke directly to my heart, but to be quite honest Mindee could read a menu at a Hungarian restaurant and it would have the same effect on me. (Disclaimer, I have never been to a Hungarian Restaurant or would I know what to order if

I ever did decide to go to one.) What Mindee did ultimately decide to include in her talk that touched me all the way down to my toes was the fact she too has had hard questions in her life that she too asked herself long enough until she too received her answer. Questions faithfully asked, and when it was her time were answered through her dedication to her faith and ultimately realized through her now husband Ryan. (Not that, that means Ryan is off the hook for the next fifty years, it just means we all have to start asking the right questions now in hopes sometime soon we find the answers we are all looking for before Big Brother Michael and sharp shooter Chris and the “God Father” decide it is time to step in.) The winds of change have started, you can see it in the sky, birds we haven’t seen in awhile are swooping into the Bicknell bottoms for a visit before they move on to somewhere else. I can hear the voices now, “What does all this have to do with Torrey?” Actually quite a lot, more than some people will ever take the time to ask the questions or figure out. I hope I get proved wrong. Find out what is going on in your town; all the good things that do might just surprise you.

Bryce Valley Area News by Vicki D. Syrett 679-8687 or vickidiane36@hotmail.com Congratulations to the newlyweds; Kaden and Marci Pollock. We wish for them a very wonderful married life. They were married on Friday in the Timpanogas Temple and held their reception in Circleville. Many from the Bryce Area traveled up to attend the reception. The Senior Citizen Center of Bryce Valley area would love to take anyone on a “field trip”. You need to let them know if there is a place you would like to go to and they will set it up as a trip for anyone who would like to go. On April 14th the van is going to Richfield to attend the Five Browns in Concert. Tickets are $19-$23 and should prove to be an entertaining evening. Call Vicki Ahlstrom at 6798666 for any information on this or any trips. Next shopping trip is on the 28th of March. The Senior Citizen Van went to St. George and Cedar City this last Friday and everyone had an enjoyable day. They all did shopping, went out to eat Chinese Food, went through a session at the Temple and ran errands for some folks back home. Traveling on the bus this time was Jeff Carter, Anita Fletcher, Doug Ahlstrom, Jerry Pollock, Ramona Morreale, Glenna Fletcher, Jacque Slack, Catherine Littlefield, Karin Barker, and Vicki Syrett. Anita and Glenna got to spend some quality time with their mother, Marie Broderick in St. George.

Karin got to go shopping with her daughter, Nicky and Jeff finished up some errands he had to run and was gracious enough to pick up some things for neighbors in Cannonville. It was a pleasant day and we missed Vicki Ahlstrom who had to stay home because she was under the weather. Get feeling better Vicki. A bunch of ladies went to Richfield to attend the Time Out for Women event and hear John Byetheway talk. (excuse the spelling) I know for sure that LaNae Cloud, Christine Nez and Carol Pollock went and had a great time. I know others went also but do not have their names. Bowdie and Echelle Pollock have opened their coffee shop business for the season. In addition to coffee and espresso drinks they offer hot chocolate, chai tea lattes, fruit smoothies, frappes, and more. It’s like having a Starbucks in Tropic, only better! Local residents receive a discount. Their business, Bryce Canyon Coffee Co., is found inside the Bryce Canyon Inn motel office. Does anyone know a HS kid driving an old model white chevy truck? If so, could you suggest they SLOW DOWN when driving to and from school. There are lots of little kids out and about during those time and you need to be very careful of them. Angie Steele was released as the YW Camp Director and Jessica Stewart was called to fill that position. Jessica

is very excited because she loves working with the Young Women and this year her very own daughter, Maren will be attending YW Camp. Gordon and Sharon Pollock have been called to be Nursery Leaders in Tropic. That is a fun job and they will do very well with it. We wish Lorna Tuczakov an uneventful surgery and quick recovery. We will have Lorna in our thoughts and prayers! We are still keeping Sarah Sorensen, Logann Eagar, and Jeannee Shakespeare in our thughts and prayer also. All three wards held their Relief Society Birthday Parties this past week. Heard they were all very well done and everyone enjoyed them. In Tropic we had people bring soup and cupcakes and salad. Others decorated the tables and then we all brought gently used or homemade gifts and exchanged them. It was a delightful evening and just when you thought you had the gift you wanted to open someone came up and exchanged it with one they had. It was hilarious and everyone participated and had a great evening. It is good to gather together once in awhile and share laughs and ideas with each other. It felt good. Thanks to all the ladies that put in the time and efforts to make the evening in each town enjoyable. Congratulations to Adam Platt who will be going to Alabama Birmingham Mission. He will be in a spanish speaking area and so will be in the Mexico City, Mexico MTC. He enters the MTC on June 25th. Jordan Johnson who is going Spanish Speaking in Texas is also going to the Mexican MTC a few weeks before Adam. Adam is the son of Nathan and Lori Platt and the grandson of Ken and Artoise Platt all of Henrieville.

Ken and Artoise Platt have been released as Cub Scout Pack Committee Chairmen for Henrieville and Cannonville. They have a big vote of thanks for a job well done. One thing I have noticed is the beautiful blossoms coming out on some of the fruit trees. Apricot in particular. Let’s hope we get more moisture without freezing temperatures so we don’t lose all that wonderful fruit. The palm trees in St. George look so sad with all of their dead leaves. So do many other plants as well. Hopefully we won’t suffer that catastrophe in Bryce Valley area. Saw many college students around this past few days. We know that SUU is on Spring Break. Already?? This year is already 1/4 over. Unbelievable. The Boy Scouts in our area are having a “Scouting for Food” drive on Saturday the 22nd so fill up your bags and set them out on your porch so they can pick them up Saturday morning. The food banks need filling up and we can help. On that same Saturday the Scouts aged 14 years and up will go out to Smith’s Ranch for a Turkey Shoot that had to be canceled in November. It is the Escalante Stake Scouts and they will be skeet shooting and shooting at targets not live turkeys. For more information on this call Chance Stewart or Clint Pierson. Hope you remembered to wear green on Monday the 17th. Especially school personnel as the kids love to pinch you if you do not have green on. Please have a great week and stay safe. Pray for moisture and those who need an extra thought from us. Send, call or email your news to me. Thanks VS
