SOROTI HOUSING COMPLEX 2015_Soroti, Uganda

Description Apartment Block Complex. The design proposal is for a development containing both a family residence and a group of apartments, along with other related ‘out-buildings’. The site is located in a developing region within Soroti District, Uganda. The project anticipates these future developments including university buildings, offices and other accommodation facilities nearby. This project was done under SNO.design.studio, self-owned practice. I produced all relevant designs, drawings and documentation.

APPROACH The site consists of 4 plots; The apartment blocks will take up Plot 1 & 2, while the family residence will occupy Plot 3 & 4, inevitably splitting the plots into 2 main sites. Both developments have out-buildings for secondary functions, for example, a guard’s house, guest wing and storage. Both sites are connected by a singular axis defined by a paved road with entrances at either end and a shared gate in the middle. Other amenities include parking, clothing yards and areas allocated for gardening and outdoor lounging. The design of the apartment blocks polishes up on the ‘traditional house’ architecture found in Uganda, to deliver a more contemporary design for a developing area. Each unit contains a living room, dining area, kitchen, store and two or three bedrooms. In addition, the units have balconies to allow outside access without necessarily leaving the privacy of one‘s own space. There are 12 units all together with parking space for 14 vehicles. The site also tries to incorporate small green spaces to allow for outdoor lounging, open to all residents
