Stelmok touted as hero Scott Stelmok ’91 rushed in as others rushed out. After the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, Stelmok, a New York City police officer, was on the scene, rummaging through debris and destroyed emergency vehicles in order to recover any weapons inside. Stelmok’s death this past December was determined to be a result of his work at Ground Zero. The lifelong North Babylon, N.Y., resident died Dec. 29, 2014, after a five-year battle with cancer. He had beaten colon, liver and brain cancer but succumbed to a second instance of lung cancer. More than 1,000 people attended his funeral. That media reports touted him as a hero came as no surprise to his friends and family, who said that Stelmok had little concern for his own welfare; his goal was to save lives. Stelmok served the New York Police Department for 20 years, retiring from the 108th Precinct in Queens in 2013 as captain. He is also remembered as a hero in the eyes of the high school and youth hockey players he coached, inspiring them to love the sport and the competition. He guided the St. Anthony’s High School freshman team in South Huntington, N.Y., for more than 20 years. Stelmok played four years of hockey at St. Anthony’s himself before joining the Saint Mary’s University hockey team in Winona. He majored in Criminal Justice and Business, ran cross-country, and was affectionately known as “Sweet Music” to his Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity brothers. Stelmok is survived by his wife, Jeanne, and daughter, Ashley.≠ Information from Newsday, Jan. 4, 2015, “Scott Stelmok dies; retired NYPD captain, 9/11 responder, was 45,” by Jordan Lauterbach
