The Widowmaker by Capt. Timothy Tyre ’69, USN (Ret.) uniquely blends a detailed historical lesson about World War II with an inspirational love story. The true story focuses on a young couple (Eddie and Shirley, Tyre’s parents) who fall in love at the outset of World War II. The book paints their innocent beginnings as two high schoolers barely aware of the term Nazism. Their days of drinking chocolate sodas and watching local football games are interrupted with the news of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, which would forever change their lives, but not their love. Eddie Tyre served as a young Army Air Corps aviator who completed 50 combat missions in the European Theatre. Peppered with love letters, as well as historical and personal photos, The Widowmaker is a tribute to those who unselfishly risked their lives during World War II, as well as those left behind. And it has a happy ending: Eddie and Shirley’s love has endured more than 70 years. It is available on Amazon.com.
