Located close to the border with Germany, in the historic region of Alsace, Strasbourg is one of the de facto capitals of the European Union, as it is the seat of several European institutions. Strasbourg’s historic city centre, the Grande Île , was classified a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1988, the first time such an honour was placed on an entire city centre. Strasbourg is immersed in the FrancoGerman culture and although violently disputed throughout history, has been a cultural bridge between France and Germany for centuries. Walking a fine tightrope between France and Germany and between a medieval past and a progressive future, it pulls off its act in inimitable Alsatian style. Thursday 30th August: After breakfast, we offer you a marvellous optional day excursion to Colmar and Riquewihr. You start your day by visiting Riquewihr, a popular tourist attraction for its historical architecture, and known for the Riesling and other great wines produced in the village. After some free time for personal leisure, you will continue your way to Colmar, where you can join the tour leader for a city tour of the Upper Alsace capital, Colmar. The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and as one of the main cities of the Alsation Wine Route. Return to your hotel for overnight. Friday 31st August: Today, we offer you yet another spectacular day excursion, this time to the famous Rhine Falls. Your first stop will be in Schaffhausen, located on the German-Swiss border, where you will have ample time to visit the Rhine Falls. Take a trip on one of the boats (extra) to the central cliff and admire the spectacular views and rapids. You will then proceed to Mainau Island (entrance extra), a 45-hector island that lies just off the shores of Lake Constance, close to Switzerland and Austria. Around million tulips, scented roses, perennials and colourful dahlias bloom in the park and gardens, while palms and citrus trees lend a Mediterranean flair to the island.
