Leadership Cashiers

Launched in 2019 as a Community Engagement Initiative of the Cashiers Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Cashiers will graduate its fifth class in 2023.

The program mission is to “inform, connect, and engage” individuals by studying civic issues, building strong working relationships, and motivating participants to provide enlightened, dynamic community leadership. Participants represent business, community, nonprofit and government sectors and generous sponsors provide financial support.

The curriculum includes issues orientation, discussion and personal leadership skills development. Sessions feature community, business, government and nonprofit leadership presentations, special appearances by regional, state and national experts, case studies and field trips. Issues highlighted include Economic Development, Natural & Cultural Resources, Planning & Infrastructure, Government, Education, and Health & Well-being.

The village of Cashiers is the epitome of what it means to live and thrive in Western North Carolina. Filled with mesmerizing waterfalls, endless mountains, and recreational opportunities galore, the fabric of this community is as rich and varied as its history and natural beauty.

The highest manmade lake east of the Mississippi River, Lake Glenville lies along N.C. 107 between Cashiers and Sylva at an elevation of 3,494 feet. The lake’s 26-mile shoreline is a hotspot for boating, fishing and aquatic adventure enthusiasts. When winter arrives, several Christmas tree farms in the area open up as people come from across the Southeast to “choose and cut” their own little piece of the holiday season.

HIGHLANDS

The village of Highlands is a vibrant community that is home to arts and cultural centers, the world-class Old Edwards Inn resort, Mission Health Systems Highlands-Cashiers Hospital and stunning waterfalls. Highlands is filled with art galleries, antique shops, cafes, restaurants and a brewery. Visitors enjoy an array of lodging options from historic downtown hotels to cozy backwoods cabins.

LAKE TOXAWAY

Created at the turn of the 20th century as a retreat for American icons like Henry Ford and George Vanderbilt, Lake Toxaway is the largest private lake in North Carolina. Bringing together the essence

of Mother Nature and the finest of cosmopolitan amenities, the lake offers quaint local shops, restaurants and proximity to Gorges State Park.

SAPPHIRE

Just east of the Cashiers Crossroads is Sapphire, a community along U.S. 64 at the heart of the “Land of Waterfalls.” A recreational playground, it’s filled with world-class trout fishing, acclaimed restaurants and prestigious golf courses. During winter, the slopes of the Sapphire Valley Ski Resort fill with those seeking a dose of snowy adventure.

SYLVA

The county seat for Jackson, Sylva is just down the mountain from Cashiers. The bustling community has many eclectic shops, breweries and restaurants, festivals throughout the year, and is home to Southwestern Community College.

CULLOWHEE

Halfway between Cashiers and Sylva resides Cullowhee, home to Western Carolina University. With over 12,000 students, the Division I institution is a beacon of academia and athletics. It has also won Outdoor Magazine’s “Top Adventure School” designation for several years.

2023 Cashiers Designer Showhouse

Since 1998, the Cashiers Historical Society (CHS) has created a beloved narrative of design on the Plateau. This year's Showhouse is a classic mountain retreat designed and built to the exacting style and quality standards of DillardJones. The home is located in Fieldstone, the newest neighborhood in The Club at High Hampton. Being surrounded by the immense natural beauty of the Cashiers Area, one becomes invigorated by the inspiration that resides in these mountains and valleys of Jackson County and greater Western North Carolina.

Home to countless artisans and crafters, the Cashiers Area is a beehive of activity. Painting to pottery, woodwork to metalsmithing, the creative mediums available in our backyard careen across the artistic spectrum.

In nearby Highlands, many of these local and regional artisans, as well as nationally and internationally-known names, are showcased at The Bascom, a world-renowned visual arts space. Throughout the year, The Bascom is filled with special exhibitions, intimate gallery openings and a wide range of cultural programming.

The popular Cashiers Valley Leaf Festival takes place each October on The Village Green at the “Crossroads” and features dozens of artisan vendors during the spectacular fall foliage season.

MOUNTAINMUSIC

For centuries, Western North Carolina has been regarded as a bastion of roots and folk music, with the origins of bluegrass and country music emerging from these ancient hills and backwoods front porches. In terms of live music, there are ample opportunities to catch a band or solo act in the Cashiers Area.

Most Friday evenings, from Memorial Day to Labor Day, the highly-anticipated “Groovin’ on the Green” concert series presents Americana, blues, rock, soul and pop artists. A free evening of quality entertainment for all ages, the performances are held on the Common’s Lawn of The Village Green —the same location as the “Cashiers Live,” another music series occurring on Saturday nights.

Showcasing some of the most talented and innovative musicians on the planet, the Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival hosts several surreal and memorable ensembles throughout

The PAC also has its “Live via Satellite” series, with weekly screenings of the National Theatre (London), Bolshoi Ballet (Moscow) and the MET Opera (New York City).

And when there’s live music onstage, the PAC is well-known for bringing in iconic names —John McEuen, Rhonda Vincent, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper —with the Grammy-winning Steep Canyon Rangers also taking the stage this year.

FARM-TO-TABLE

Summoning a keen sense of passion and place, the restaurants and caterers around the Cashiers Area bring forth a robust menu of local produce, fresh meats and seasonal ingredients in dishes happily served to locals and visitors alike. Whether it’s a “you had to be there” farm-to-table experience, tasty wood fire oven pizza or simply enjoying a plate of juicy barbecue smoked and sliced right on the plateau, the culinary scene here is aptly dubbed “cosmopolitan country” — an ode to the blending of traditional Appalachian cuisines and modern techniques of our skilled artisan chefs. And to top off these scrumptious meals is an impressive selection of locally-made craft ales, spirits and wines. Known as one of the craft beer havens of the country, Western North Carolina is home to dozens of award-winning artisan ale breweries and taprooms. Atop the plateau, Cashiers is home to Whiteside Brewing, located at the “Crossroads.” Just to the east of that is Sapphire Mountain Brewing. Both spots are also restaurants, each filled with a wide-variety of ale styles, live music and fellowship.

Dubbed the “Land of the Waterfalls,” the Continental Divide passes right through the Cashiers Area, ultimately creating this cascading flow of water down each side. A gateway to natural wonder and outdoor discovery, the Cashiers Area is home to majestic waterfalls, mystical lagoons and mesmerizing streams. With hundreds of trails to choose from, there are endless options for day hikes and multiday excursions into the backcountry.

PANTHERTOWN

As part of the Nantahala National Forest, the Panthertown Valley Backcountry Area plays host to towering cliffs, waterfalls, high peaks and low valleys — the timeless natural beauty of Western North Carolina.

Straddling the Eastern Continental Divide, the area also marks the crossroads of the Little Tennessee River and Tuckaseegee River. There’s world-class fly fishing on numerous rivers and streams. Hiking and mountain biking on old logging roads that snake endlessly through the woods. And ample camping opportunities on sites that are scattered within the 6,300 acres that makes up the Panthertown Valley wilderness experience.

GORGES STATE PARK

Gorges State Park is a 7,709-acre state park set in the midst of spectacular waterfalls, rugged river gorges, sheer rock walls and a high concentration of rare species. Backcountry-style recreation is a hallmark of Gorges with distance hiking, backpack camping, trout fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding welcome in various parts of the rugged interior. The park incorporates a portion the long-distance Foothills Trail and touches Lake Jocassee at the South Carolina border.

When the temperature drops, the fun heats up. For downhill skiers, jump onto the lifts at the nearby Sapphire Valley Ski Resort. Add cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice climbing and backwoods hiking into your possibilities, and you have yourself the epitome of a winter wonderland.

And when the holiday season appears on the calendar, locals and visitors alike flock to the handful of chooseand-cut Christmas tree farms in and around the Cashiers Area. Then, as the sun falls behind the mountains, stay warm and cozy by the fireplace at a backcountry retreat.

LAKE GLENVILLE Outdoors

Lake Glenville’s 26 miles of shoreline are a water lover’s haven. The highest elevation lake east of the Mississippi River, the body of water covers around 1,450 total acres. The depths of the lake itself mirror the steepness of the surrounding mountains, with the headwaters nearby at Hurricane Creek.

With the Pines Recreation Area and other points providing easy access to the water, there are plenty of rentals (by the hour, day or week) available for boaters of all group sizes. Add to that numerous regional lakes, and you have endless options to jump into your pontoon boat, fishing rig, jet-ski, canoe or kayak and soak into another day on the water in Southern Appalachia. Paddleboards, wa-

ter skis, tubes and kneeboards are also very popular on the lake.

For those looking for something a little more tranquil, fishing is another option on Lake Glenville, where anglers can spend the day tossing their lines onto pristine waters in hopes of capturing trout, large/small mouth bass, yellow perch, crappie or walleye, among several other species thriving under the surface.

Just below the dam at Lake Glenville is High Falls. Also known as Cullowhee Falls, the location is a haven for whitewater kayaking enthusiasts following a heavy rainstorm or during water release days, where the powerful surge makes it one of the most sought after kayaking destinations in the region.

The Historic Toxaway Corridor along U.S. 64 and N.C. 281 is a storied community featuring charming retailers and restaurants. The historic Greystone Inn, with a tradition of gracious hospitality and quiet beauty, has been renewed as a culinary and spa destination. FLY FISHING

Paddlers, rafters and tubers take to the rushing waters of local rivers to catch fast-moving rapids during seasonal water releases. With several outfitters in the Cashiers Area, families and hardcore enthusiasts alike are able to find the equipment and spots they are looking for, or join one of many guided trips on numerous pristine routes winding through lush terrain.

ROCK CLIMBING

Within the Cashiers Area, rock climbers will find dramatic granite walls to conquer. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or weekend scrambler, the climbing routes are as accessible as they are enjoyable for rock conquerors of all skill levels. Equipment, route advice/suggestions and guide services are also readily available at any of the local outfitters.

ZIPLINING

One popular activity in the area is ziplining. With options for all skill levels, the routes include a ski area and a gorge.

MOUNTAIN & ROAD BIKING

Amid old logging roads, public use trails and backwoods single-track, the Cashiers Area is where mountain bike enthusiasts head for the hills. Road cyclists in the region take on formidable hill climbs and s-curves as they wind through the high peaks and deep valleys of Western North Carolina. In Panthertown Valley, there’s over 30 miles of trails in the Nantahala National Forest open to mountain bikers. Just down the mountain in nearby Cullowhee, there’s several miles of pristine double-track trails for mountain biking across from Western Carolina University. The nearby communities of Brevard, Cherokee and Bryson City are also well-known mountain bike meccas with several welldeveloped trail systems.
