Messages from School Leadership

A Message from Catherine BARRY Hant ‘89, Head of School “SMLS remains a missionfocused school, and our dedication to engaging each girl in a personalized, realworld learning experience is at the forefront of all that we do.” To Our SMLS Community, St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School is an extraordinary place. Its strong, foundational history and its sincere and longterm dedication to girls education are just two factors that make the school so special. The tradition of inspiring and empowering women is a proud legacy for our school and a guidepost for all that we do, and that tradition centers around high academic standards balanced with a strong and supportive community that this very special school has fostered during its impressive 132-year history. Through the ongoing support of our strong and vibrant community, we have connected generations together and continue to create a resource-rich experience for our students. Each of us here at SMLS are incredibly grateful for our supportive community. Generous gifts of time, friendship, and financial contributions directly support current and future Millies, creating very special opportunities for them to find and pursue their life’s passions. In the pages that follow, you will see examples of your support at work. Providing students with opportunities to work with innovative tools, apply their newly acquired skills to contexts outside of the classroom and immerse themselves in real-world contexts are just some of the ways you are helping SMLS students grow their curiosities, challenge the world around them, and discover their unique interests. SMLS remains a mission-focused school, and our dedication to engaging each girl in a personalized, realworld learning experience is at the forefront of all that we do. Guiding this work is the passionate leadership of the

SMLS Board of Governors. I would like to thank both Mr. Gary Skene, an SMLS parent who served as Chair of the Board of Governors during the 2022–23 academic year, and Ms. Victoria Hughes ‘01, an SMLS alumna and current SMLS parent, who took on the role of Board Chair in August 2023. With a skilled Board of Governors, supportive parents, talented faculty and staff, impressive alumnae, and dedicated friends of the school, our community is capable of reaching great heights. SMLS’s future remains bright, and, together, we will keep transforming our Millies’ dreams into realities. On behalf of everyone at SMLS, I thank you, sincerely, for your interest in and support of SMLS. We celebrate you, and all that you do for our Millies—past, present and future.

With gratitude, Catherine BARRY Hant ‘89 Head of School

2022–2023 Gratitude Report 3

A Message from Valerie Terejko, Executive Director of Advancement and Community Relations When I reflect on the 2022–23 school year, what stands out the most is the generosity of spirit I have witnessed. Our SMLS community members—students, faculty and staff, alumnae, parents, grandparents, past parents and friends— rallied in their support of the school with their advice, numerous volunteer commitments and generous philanthropic support. We are humbled by the active participation of our community members. As you may know, independent schools do not receive any support from governments and tuition payments cover the operating budget of the school. It is only through donations that we are able to provide the margin of excellence that is expected of our school. New spaces and equipment, enhanced curricular and co-curricular programs, and student financial assistance to enable some of the brightest girls from across the region to attend SMLS are all examples of improvements to SMLS made possible by donations.

“We are humbled by the active participation of our community members.” We are grateful for the leadership provided by SMLS parent and governor, Ijeoma Ugwunze P’32, ‘32, ‘34, for her role as Advancement Committee Chair. The members of the Advancement Committee work tirelessly with the Head of School and Advancement staff to provide their advice and support and they encourage others to follow their lead. This partnership is essential to the ongoing fundraising success at SMLS. Thank you to our volunteers! Thank you, most sincerely, to all of SMLS’s treasured donors from the girls and staff of SMLS.

Highlights from the 2022–23 fiscal year include: • $564,276 raised in new commitments to the School, exceeding our goal of $500,000 and our strongest fundraising year since 2018–19. • The incredible efforts of the SMLS Parent and Alumnae Associations brought our community back together after the global pandemic. Gatherings such as our Alumnae Reunion events and Blue Jeans and Bling Social allowed us to reconnect, celebrate our shared lifelong connections, and raise important priority funding for our Millies and the school. • The establishment of the new Endowed SMLS Student Learning and Innovation Fund, the first of its kind for the school, which you can read more about on page 15. • 100% participation in The Millie Fund campaign from both the SMLS Board of Governors and Senior Leadership Team. • The graduating families of the Class of 2023 who came together to raise $68,000 to help provide more bright and promising young women the opportunity to experience, and benefit from, an SMLS education.

A Message from Ijeoma Ugwunze P’32, ‘32, ‘34 Chair of the Advancement Committee SMLS has given my three daughters the opportunity to excel academically, artistically and athletically. Whatever their interests, they are supported, encouraged and motivated by those around them. I see the result of an SMLS education in my three daughters every day—in their pride to be Millies, their love for school and the way they carry and conduct themselves. My family proudly supports SMLS because we appreciate the value of SMLS and recognize the need for financial support of the school. Serving as the Chair of the SMLS Advancement Committee has given me the opportunity to see first-hand the vital importance of strong philanthropic support for our school. It fuels our mission and helps unlock the potential of each and every Millie. When I came to SMLS in 2019 I was surprised to learn that while tuition covers the cost of fundamental school operations, it is the charitable gifts from our families, alumnae, staff and friends that provide the much-needed support for things like new facilities, teaching and classroom resources, our Signature Programs and Student Financial Assistance, just to name a few. In the 2022–23 school year, we were able to achieve impressive results together, thanks to the support of our community. I look forward to seeing this great work continue under the leadership of SMLS’ new Advancement Committee Chair, Gary Skene. As former Chair of the SMLS Board of Governors and a long standing member of the SMLS community, Gary is well positioned to help achieve the school’s aspirational goals.

“Your generosity is giving girls and young women—and my three daughters—the best possible education.” For SMLS, it is your generosity that makes all the difference. I wish to thank each person listed in this Report for your support of SMLS. Your generosity is giving girls and young women—and my three daughters—the best possible education.

Celebrating Our Parent Association The SMLS community is truly fortunate to have such a dedicated and generous group of parent volunteers. In the 2022–23 school year, the SMLS Parent Association held 15 events including Movie Night, student-parent celebrations, and the Blue Jeans and Bling social. These joyful gatherings create cherished memories for our Millies and their families and are a large part of fostering the warm, welcoming community that makes SMLS so special. Whether its growing our school library, serving as SMLS ambassadors, or decorating our school for various holidays, the Parent Association helps create a positive environment for everyone in the SMLS community. The funds they lovingly raise each year are invested across the school to grow our programs, provide the highest standard of academic excellence and give our Millies an educational experience like no other. Our Parent Association has been an impactful partner to SMLS, and we thank them for all that they do.

“The SMLS Parent Association brings

together dedicated parent volunteers who strive to enhance the SMLS community, with a view to impacting the day-to-day lives of our Millie girls. Through activities planned and hosted by the SMLS PA, with the assistance of SMLS staff, we seek to drive both friend-raising and fundraising to foster closer community connections. Thank you to all of our SMLS parents and volunteers who gave in many ways over the 2022–2023 school year. With support from our amazing SMLS community, the Parent Association was able to successfully strengthen our community and make a significant financial contribution to the School.

Celebrating Our Alumnae Association SMLS is proud to have a vibrant network of 3,500+ alumnae worldwide who remain connected to our great school. Led by our spirited Alumnae Executive, the Alumnae Association is a supportive community of women who share a lifelong connection and an interest in helping one another. In 2022–23, alumnae gatherings were plentiful and spread from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. It was a joy to feel the excitement of friends reconnecting after a year or two and to see the warm embrace of friends whose relationships span decades and miles. SMLS is grateful for the Alumnae Association’s generous support. Their gifts of time and mentorship help today’s Millies as they chart a path for their future, and create lasting bonds among current and future SMLS alumnae. Thanks to a challenge gift from the Alumnae Executive during Giving Tuesday, our alumnae community was inspired to help more girls attend SMLS through their donations, making our campaign a wonderful success. Together with their annual fundraising efforts such as the holiday wreaths, the Alumnae Association contributed $3,500 in support of Student Financial Assistance. We thank the Alumnae Executive and the Alumnae Association for their leadership and all their contributions to our school community.

“Being a part of the SMLS Alumnae community is one of the most important aspects of my

life. Serving as President has allowed me to connect with our global community of 3500+ alumnae, and I cherish the connections made. The SMLS Alumnae Association strives to provide opportunities to connect with the school and with one another. After two years of virtual events and distancing, our community was eager to reconnect at our pub nights, networking events, Millie Christmas, and Reunion Brunch! It was also such a pleasure to be back in the school, sharing moments with our current students through our Millies Helping Millies programming. Of course, none of this would be possible without the help of my incredible executive team. Thank you for generously giving your time, energy, and dedication to help bring our alumnae community together. And thank you to all members of the Alumnae Association for your continued participation, support, and dedication to our SMLS community. Once a Millie, always a Millie.

OUR VISION

Young women empowered to challenge and transform the world. OUR MISSION

To engage each girl in a personalized, real-world learning experience where she explores her unique pathways within a nurturing community.

St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School

2022–2023 Gratitude Report 11

Impact of Giving When you support SMLS, you empower young women to challenge and transform the world. You make it possible for our students to dream big, do more and continue unlocking their potential. Here are some recent examples of your generous donations in action at SMLS. Our Class of 2023 graduates collectively received 431 offers of admission from leading universities, nationally and internationally. In addition, they have been offered merit-based awards and scholarships totalling over $1 million. With your support of SMLS, you play a special role in the journey of these students and their impressive achievements. More Millies have the opportunity to participate in life-changing travel experiences through our Global Citizenship Signature Program. Students have described our Global Citizenship experiences as “once-in-a-lifetime” and “inspirational.” More than a travel experience, our Global Citizenship Signature Program creates rare opportunities for students to form strong bonds with one another, challenge themselves, connect with nature, learn new skills, develop cultural understandings, discover more about themselves, and better understand their place in the world. Their experiences become even better thanks to a variety of resources made possible with your support such as dry bags, two-way radios, and a Go-Pro camera to capture these cherished and life-long memories and to share those experiences with loved ones. A bursary is now also available, thanks to our generous community, to help more girls participate in these life-changing excursions and experience all that they have to offer. Our Spartan Athletes are benefitting from professional coaching. We continue to see the impact of this through our athletes’ individual growth, their success at competitions and tournaments, and the pride that is felt throughout the community for our teams, athletes and school. With the addition of our new outdoor scoreboard, thanks to the SMLS Parent Association, friends and family in attendance can better cheer on our athletes. Go Spartans!

Millies of all ages are learning to thrive in a technologicallyadvancing world through our STEM and Robotics Signature Program. Your donations are creating more opportunities for students to get involved in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and providing age-appropriate tools and resources to apply STEM concepts in fun and engaging ways. With our longstanding history in STEM and Robotics, your donations allow us to remain on the cutting edge of innovation. Thanks to your support of our Art and Design Signature Program, a new state-of-the-art digital lighting system was recently installed. This new system significantly enhances performances for classwork, community or classroom presentations, and Middle and Senior School theatre productions. Students and audiences enjoyed this professional-grade lighting system during our school performances of Into the Woods and Shrek Jr. Additional upgrades to our Theatre are planned for 2023–24, thanks to the generous support of the SMLS Parent Association. With your support of the Head of School Speaker Series, students have the unique opportunity to connect with special guest speakers like Dr. Elin Kelsey and Susan Aglukark who are leaders in their field. It brings all members of the SMLS community together to experience the inspiration that comes from hearing world-class guest speakers on a variety of topics, give us new perspectives, and demonstrate that when you use your voice you can make meaningful change. Through your gifts in support of Student Financial Assistance, you give our students the greatest gift of all—an education that lays the groundwork for their development and success, and the opportunity to reach their full potential regardless of their financial background. To support girls in the 2022–23 academic year, financial aid totalling approximately $450,000 was awarded to 44 deserving students. Your support builds and enriches our community, ensuring that we have the very best Millies and minds at our school.

Meet Our Donors Jennifer Smith ‘87 “I was lucky to come to St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School. It was the best decision we ever made.” Jennifer Smith ‘87 recalls with great fondness the seven years she spent as a student at SMLS. “I lived in Milton and because of the public system structure at that time, I would have had to change schools three times between Grades 7–13, so my mother decided that sending me to SMLS was the best thing for me—and she was absolutely correct.” Throughout Jennifer’s adult life, she has fortuitously crossed paths with many Millies and notes the instant connection it creates between strangers. “It doesn’t matter what year you graduated. If you went to this school, you are part of a sisterhood. Everyone supports everyone. From the administrative staff to the faculty to the students—it is one big family.” Jennifer is proud of how SMLS has evolved. “I wish I had the opportunity these girls have now. As long as the school keeps advancing and allowing girls the opportunity to succeed, that is what matters.” Jennifer’s volunteerism with SMLS began immediately upon her graduation, thirty-six years ago. She has served as a member of the Alumnae Executive and is a long-time Class Representative for her Class of 1987. It wasn’t long after that she began her philanthropic support of the school. “When I started giving to SMLS it was a small

14 2022–2023 Gratitude Report

amount each year, but it helps. If every alumna did the same, collectively that would really make a difference.” In 2015, Jennifer lovingly included SMLS in her estate plans and left a bequest to the school through her Will. Jennifer’s wish is that her gift to the Student Financial Assistance program will help more girls have access to and experience all that SMLS has to offer and give them more possibilities for a successful future. “I’m paying it forward. A school like SMLS fosters so much because the alumnae go on to become incredible individuals. It is important to me to give more girls this chance. I was lucky to get the chance to receive an education at SMLS. There are many girls out there deserving of it, and I am happy to help give someone else this opportunity.” “A SMLS education teaches you how to get through life. It helps form you. When I was a student, the Sisters were a big part of the school, and they would say ‘Today is the first day of the rest of your life’. No one knows what tomorrow will bring, but as a SMLS student, you know you can do anything and that you have a community behind you that is there whenever you need.” When asked what advice she has for fellow alumnae, Jennifer says, “Remember your time at SMLS, what the school did for you, what you can do for the school.”

The Yu Chuai Family Thanks to the generosity of the Yu Chuai family, an exciting new Fund has been created in support of our students and school. The Endowed SMLS Student Learning and Innovation Fund will provide sustainable funding for learning and innovation in perpetuity, and facilitate the longterm financial sustainability of the school through the endowment. “We have watched our daughter’s passions come to life at SMLS. She is thriving, and we are grateful for all the ways in which the school has enabled our daughter to grow. We are happy to give back to SMLS. We understand that it is a not-for-profit school and that tuition only covers the school’s fundamental operating costs. We want to ensure that the school is well supported now and in the future.”

“This fund is the first of its kind at SMLS”, says Valerie Terejko, Executive Director of Advancement and Community Relations. “It is a wonderful complement to The Millie Fund in that, while The Millie Fund provides annual support for a broad range of needs school-wide, this new fund will focus on learning and innovation opportunities for our students and provide consistent funding each year to bring these opportunities to our Millies for generations to come. An endowed fund such as this has historically supported our Student Financial Assistance program. This endowed fund that will facilitate student learning and innovation at the school for the long run is quite special.”

“We have watched our daughter’s passions come to life at SMLS.”
