I’ve never really been keen on making New Year’s resolutions but certainly understand and admire those who wish to start the year off with positive goals — whether they be small changes or major life overhauls. In this issue, we profile several Lakers who, in the past few years, have been inspired to find specific ways to improve their own health and happiness or make a significant impact on the lives of others.

At 18, Renee Bach left her Bedford County home for Uganda to start a non-profit dedicated to eradicating malnutrition in children. Her touching story starts on Page 30. Hank Irving, who had given up a career in music to become a pharmaceutical sales rep, found happiness by returning to his rockand-roll roots (Page 38). And, at 59, Brian Raub decided to tackle the Appalachian Trail in 100-mile segments as the means and motivation to lose weight and get fit. Read his inspiring narrative starting on Page 42.

Jason Golomb of Herndon took this photo of his wife, Kristen, atop the Acropolis in Athens, Greece, last July. The couple, who were on a cruise to celebrate their 20th wedding anniversary, also made stops in Turkey and the Greek island of Santorini.

Dr. Ole Kuney (center) poses with Huddleston residents (from left) Suzanne Hooper, Carroll Brown, Wayne Brown and Mitch Hooper in May in the Maasai area of Northern Tanzania. Kuney, chief of the more than 200,000 Maasai who live in the area, is a friend of the Browns, who served as missionaries in Tanzania for eight years. “Many of the Maasai walked to the village to greet us, some from as much as 30 miles away,” Suzanne said. “It was a wonderful experience and [Dr. Kuney] was most happy to be a part of our Laker Magazine photo.”

In July, Ranjana and Vinod Chachra of Blacksburg and Moneta took a foodieinspired vacation to California, which included a stop at The French Laundry in Napa. The couple and their family spent five hours enjoying a nine-course meal at the renowned restaurant.

Virginia, Rebecca and Mark Crabtree of Martinsville took the Laker on a trip last August to Austria to celebrate Virginia’s high school graduation. The family took this photo in Salzburg near St. Peter’s cemetery and catacombs, a site that dates back to 1627.

Donald Byers of Manassas shows off the Laker along the coast of Sydney, Australia, where he spent a part of last year studying abroad. “I’ve been coming to the lake for almost as long as I can remember, and I just wanted to show some some love for SML,” he said.

“I find a real gardener is not a man who cultivates flowers; he is a man who cultivates the soil.” – from “The Gardener’s Year” bY Karel ČapeK

E

K

arel Čapek was right. To successfully cultivate flowers and vegetables, you must first cultivate the soil. Build good soil, and you’ll reap the rewards of vigorous plants that are disease-and pest-resistant, more drought-tolerant and, in the case of vegetables, that produce heavier and more flavorful crops. Building good soil is a worthwhile investment. Soil isn’t just dirt. Good soil is a complex blend of various minerals that are essential nutrients for your plants. Healthy soil also is alive with organisms, such as worms, fungi, beneficial bacteria and insects that interact with plants to help them take up nutrients, build resilience and improve overall vigor. In addition to the chemical and biological components of soil, its texture and structure also are important. At Smith Mountain Lake, most gardeners deal with heavy clay soil, which has an ultra-fine texture that prohibits air circulation and is a dense medium for roots to penetrate. Although clay typically is rich in nutrients, it drains poorly. Our native soil definitely needs improving.

FROM OK CLAY TO LUSCIOUS LOAM

Anything organic that’s added to the soil will improve its texture, nutrient content and ability to drain. Organic additives include shredded newspapers, manure (cow, rabbit, chicken), straw, pine needles, wood ashes, worm castings and compost. All are excellent, but compost is the miracle soil amendment. Add it to heavy clay soil and you make the soil lighter and improve drainage. Add it to sandy soil and you provide needed bulk, as well as water-retaining properties. Rich in micronutrients and organisms, compost feeds and builds the soil, helps balance pH levels and boosts plants’ immune systems. There is never a time when compost is inappropriate to add to the garden.

HOW TO MAKE COMPOST

You can make your own compost for free from materials collected from your garden, as well as organic kitchen waste that most people throw away. Aim to have a waste-free kitchen where you recycle everything, including vegetative food scraps. If you aren’t in a rush, you can simply pile up garden debris and kitchen waste in an out-of-the-way corner and let nature run its course. In about a year, you’ll have compost. Optimally, the pile should be about 4 feet high and at least 4 feet long and wide, although it can extend as long as you like, and it should be turned periodically to aerate it. As the material breaks down, the pile will shrink in height by about 50 percent. The resulting product is worth its weight in gold in the garden. If you don’t want to wait a year, follow one of the recipes on the following page for compost in as few as two weeks. A compost inoculant comprised of cultured bacteria, fungi and enzyme strains also will speed the composting process. Just mix it with water, allow time for activation and spray onto the compost as the piles are made or turned. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

Use compost to top dress your beds and add nutrients that the worms will take underground for you, mix it with native soil when planting or incorporate it into the soil to create nutrient-rich beds. In her novel “Break of Day,” the French writer Colette wrote: “To lift and penetrate and tear apart the soil is a labor – a pleasure – always accompanied by an exaltation that no unprofitable exercise can ever provide. ... When you open up the earth, even for a mere cabbage patch, you always feel like the first man, the master, the husband with no rivals. The earth you open up has no longer any past – only a future.” Both economically and emotionally, soil amendment makes good sense. For details on choosing the bin that’s right for your composting needs, turn to Page 24. Catriona Tudor Erler is a freelance garden writer, photographer and speaker who divides her time between SML and Charlottesville. She is the author of nine books on gardening and landscaping.

COMPOSTING GUIDELINES To avoid flies, other pests and potential odor, bury kitchen scraps a few inches deep in the pile. What to compost high-carbon “Browns” Aged sawdust

compost QUIcKLY To produce compost in a hurry you need a balance of high-nitrogen “green” material and high-carbon “brown.” The material also needs to be moist, but not soggy, and aerated. Recipe for autumn • 3 parts dry leaves • 1 part fresh garden weeds • 1 part fresh grass clippings • 1 part food scraps

Paper (in moderation)

What not to compost Animal feces

Nutshells

Bones

Recipe for summer • 3 parts dry grass clippings

high-Nitrogen “Greens” Coffee grounds and filters

Charcoal or charcoal ashes

• 3 parts fresh grass clippings

Dairy products

CHOOSING THE BEST BIN When it comes to commercial compost bins and pens, there are many from which to choose. Select one that will best suit your garden space and your approach to composting. 1. Stacked Bins Constructed of recycled plastic, these bins are vented for air circulation and tiered so you mix the layers for faster composting. Harvest the finished material from the bottom and add new material on top. 2. Rotating Drums Ideal for small gardens, the unit resembles a miniature cement mixer. Fill with garden and kitchen scraps, rotate the drum daily and in less than a month, you’ll have compost. 3. Compartmentalized Bins or Pens These can be built of cinder block, wood slats or wire cages. Each compartment should be at least a 4-foot-square cube. One compartment holds fresh material, the second is material that is part way through the decomposing process and the third bin holds the material ready to use. – Catriona Tudor Erler

When Moneta’s Renee Bach embarked on a mission trip to the heart of Africa as a teenager, she had no idea the profound impact the journey would have on her life and thousands of others.

ost parents dream their children will find a meaningful and fulfilling life calling, a passionate spark that leads to a lifetime of purposeful work. However, many know from experience that this kind of inspiration often requires years of exploration, including hits and misses, before the right fit becomes apparent and attainable. What most parents don’t expect is for their child, at the tender age of 17, to surprise them with news that she has discovered her calling saving children in a slum on the other side of the world.

Called to afriCa

Renee Bach had not always known she would make Uganda her home. As a home-schooled 17-year-old living in Bedford County, Renee may have been a bit more adventurous than most teenagers, but she

seemed to be focused on utilizing her exceptional organizational skills for more domestic purposes. “Back then, I believe Renee had plans and dreams of becoming a wedding planner,” said her mother, Lauri Bach. “She enjoyed decorating and organizing, and arranged a few events for friends and family.” In September 2007, an opportunity to travel abroad would change Renee’s life in ways she could not begin to imagine. It was then that she began what was supposed to be a six-month volunteer post at an orphanage in the town of Jinja, Uganda. While there, she ventured into the slum area of Masese, which teemed with abject poverty, disease and rampant malnutrition among its children. According to the World Health Organization, 38 percent of children in Uganda under the age of 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition. Sixteen percent are considered underweight and six percent are classified as having acute malnutrition. Renee said she was deeply troubled by what she saw. She wondered why, in a country such as Uganda, with its long growing season and what appeared to be ample supply of food sources, were so many children plagued with malnutrition? A group of mothers feed their children nutritional supplements at Serving His Children, a non-profit organization near Jinja, Uganda.

Her temporary assignment turned into a lifechanging commitment to channel her young energy and talents into addressing infant and child malnutrition in Uganda. While visiting her daughter, Lauri Bach also felt the pull of Masese and realized that Renee’s volunteer work would not be a passing phase. “The Lord gave us a peace and confidence about what Renee was doing, even at 18 years old and in Africa,” she said, recounting the first of many overseas trips to visit her daughter. “I knew right away that she was in the right spot.”

Breaking the CyCle

In the fall of 2008, the Bachs created Serving His Children, a non-profit ministry with a mission to “break the cycle of malnutrition one life at a time.” What started as a temporary program feeding up to 1,000 children in Masese twice-weekly meals, has evolved in to a more focused enterprise that centers its efforts on the youngest and most at-risk victims of malnutrition: newborns, infants and young children, most of whom suffer from Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM). SAM most often occurs because Ugandan mothers are not providing a nutritional diet for

32 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

their offspring, Renee said. In many communities, families are encouraged to sell their produce for income, saving only nutritionally deficient foods for their own consumption. There also is a common misconception among women that if they become pregnant while still nursing an infant, their breast milk becomes poisonous. Mothers stop nursing and begin feeding their young child a diet of “posho” – a porridge made from cornmeal cooked in water until it reaches a dough-like consistency. Posho is high in carbohydrates but low in protein and vital nutrients infants and newborns need to grow and survive. Without the benefit of a medical background, Renee intuitively devoted all available resources into caring for each gravely ill child who came through the SHC doors. However, she soon came to realize that, while nursing the children back to health was paramount, more needed to be done if the cycle of malnutrition was to be broken. “I slowly came to understand the medical causes of malnutrition through research, tutoring from local doctors and nutritionists, and much prayer,” Renee said, noting that a critical step in attempting to eradicate malnutrition would be to incorporate an educational element into her efforts.

Today, SHC is a registered Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that, at its core, has three primary components: Inpatient rehabilitation: Children in lifethreatening stages of malnutrition, along with a caregiver, are admitted to the center where they receive medical treatment, nutritional supplements and training for the caregiver. Outpatient early intervention: Satellite clinics are stationed in outlying communities where children in earlier stages of malnutrition who don’t require medical intervention are seen every two weeks. At each visit, children are assessed, parents attend nutrition classes and food supplements are dispensed to be prepared at home. Community health and nutrition classes: Families discharged from the inpatient program are required to give back to their communities by scheduling and promoting a class taught by SHC staff covering health, hygiene, nutrition and discipleship.

By the end of 2013, SHC had served 700 children through its inpatient program and approximately 1,700 families in its outpatient clinics. This included 211 children treated for malnutrition; 600 families helped through outpatient services; 36,000 meals served to moms, staff and visitors; 320 classes taught to moms on topics such as nutrition, health care and hygiene; and 120 community nutrition classes taught in rural area villages.

a ‘typical’ day

There is no such thing as an average day at SHC, Renee said, but she and her staff strive to develop and maintain as orderly a schedule as possible. Renee’s work requires her to wear many hats: project director, counselor, nurse, friend and sometimes even janitor. “A ‘typical’ day can find me unclogging toilets, changing light bulbs, serving as a nurse’s assistant – even helping to deliver babies in a nearby village,” she said.

Lydia plays with son Patrick, whom she brought to Serving His Children in 2013 for lifesaving intestinal surgery. At the time, 3-year-old Patrick weighed 7 pounds. After several months of nutritional therapy, he doubled his weight and was able to have the first of five necessary surgeries. Renee Bach says Patrick now runs and plays like any healthy 4-year-old. Staff members and supporters of Serving His Children are comprised primarily of native Ugandans who serve in a variety of roles.

The organization has grown to a workforce of 27, with all but three being native Ugandans. The staff includes doctors, nurses, social workers, pastors, a nutritionist and an agricultural manager who teaches sustainable gardening. And it all began with one young woman’s steadfast belief that the cycle of hunger could be broken with a core mission: to rescue, to mentor and to hope.

as the organization’s project director and Renee’s biggest cheerleader. “Keeping up with my daughter over there is a fulltime job over here,” she quipped. Other family members also work to sustain SHC. Renee’s sister Eileen, 19, has traveled to Uganda to support the program. Brother Glendon, 21, serves as the Director of Donor Relations and is working to develop an expansion project that will include building a larger compound to provide training for groups and organizations that want to replicate SHC’s successes in other areas of Africa. Fund development work continues

Meeting Selah grace In 2009, Serving His Children was beginning its transition from a feeding center to a malnutrition rehabilitation center and Renee Bach had her hands full as director of the fledgling program. She certainly was not expecting a woman to show up on the doorstep carrying a 10-day-old baby girl rescued from a pit latrine. Renee said she worked to locate the child’s mother, only to discover her critically ill at a nearby hospital. The grandmother, who was raising several other children, was not capable of also taking on the needs of a young infant. And while SHC does not operate as an orphanage, Renee promised the mother, who later died, that she would take care of the baby. Lauri Bach said she and husband Marcus initially were alarmed when Renee, then 20, informed them she would be raising the orphan. “You can imagine our concerns. But three months later, when I traveled to Uganda, I knew as soon as I held Selah Grace that she was my grandchild,” said Lauri Bach, her eyes filling with tears. Selah is now a thriving and inquisitive 5-year-old whose adoption is almost final. She speaks both Luganda (the local language) and English. Renee said her daughter possesses an easy-going, adaptable demeanor and “teaches me something new every day. I can’t imagine my life without her.”

Renee Bach plays with Selah Grace, 5, whom she’s in the the process of adopting. At 10 days old, the child was abandonded by her ailing birth mother and brought to Bach for care.

to expand with the recent creation of a jewelry line and coffee sales, as well as planned outreach to the Smith Mountain Lake community this year. The organization also aims to expand its Ugandan operations by purchasing property for the first time, a process Lauri described as slow and methodical. However, she said she’s certain Renee’s positive outlook and can-do spirit will continue to carry SHC through the progression, as well as other challenges sure to come. Renee said, “I am so thankful that in my short 26 years God has allowed me to witness miracles and see incredible transformation take place in children and families around Uganda. Not many people can say they have seen the dead come alive, but I truly can say that I have.” SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

ome of us may claim to be rock stars at heart. We occasionally daydream about the stage, screaming fans, dancing lights, our fist around the microphone and our voice filling an auditorium. Reality, however, is a dusty, unpracticed guitar and days filled with other, probably wiser, pursuits. But for Smith Mountain Lake resident Hank Irving, being a professional, internationally recognized rock musician isn’t the left-behind wish of his teenaged years. It’s a dream come true. “I grew up in a family of musicians and can recall playing drums in my parents’ variety band where we performed at almost every Moose Lodge and American Legion in the area,” said Irving, a native of Danville. “My defining moment was when an attendee walked up after the show and handed me a $10 bill for ‘playing so well.’ I was blown away to be paid to do what I thoroughly enjoyed.” Irving began pursuing music more seriously as a teen, moving from the drum kit to the more visible role of guitarist and, finally, lead singer.

“There are a lot of atmospheric qualities, and it’s vocally very melodic as I am not a fan of growling, screaming, grunting and yelling as a singer.” — Hank IrvIng, lead sInger of WHIle Heaven Wept

“In 1994, I joined a progressive rock band named ALTURA as their vocalist. In 1996, we released our first globally distributed album, ‘Mercy.’ The day the record was released, I went into the local Best Buy and purchased my own album. Seeing my record on store shelves was a dream come true. I was 21, crying in the checkout line,” he said. ALTURA later disbanded and Irving contemplated leaving his rock-and-roll ways behind. He graduated from college, started a career in the pharmaceutical industry and married his sweetheart, Kelly. They soon expanded their family to include son Bennett and daughter Amelia. Irving “enjoyed life immensely” during those years, but missed the world of professional music. On a whim, he sent a friendly fan email to Tom Phillips, guitarist for one of his favorite bands, While Heaven Wept. 40 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

“The shocker,” Irving said, “came when Tom replied that he was a fan of ALTURA and of my voice. He asked if I was interested in auditioning for the role of vocalist.” Irving landed the job and has fronted While Heaven Wept through three full-length albums, including the most recent, “Suspended at Alphelion,” released in November. The group is signed to the world’s biggest heavy metal label, Nuclear Blast Records, and has charted the German Billboards Top 100. Irving describes While Heaven Wept as epic progressive rock/metal, meaning the sound is a combination of rock, metal, symphonic and classical resulting in a hard and heavy, yet ethereal, sound. “Some fans call it ‘romantic and beautiful heavy metal’,” said Irving. “There are a lot of atmospheric qualities, and it’s vocally very melodic as I am not

a fan of growling, screaming, grunting and yelling as a singer.” Irving said it’s not unusual for fans to engage with the music on an emotional level. “The first concert I ever performed with WHW, I witnessed fans actually crying during our set,” he said. To push album sales, the group tours several times a year. And while the band has shows lined up later this year in Atlanta and Los Angeles, its biggest fan base is in Europe. “In 2015, the tour will take us to Greece, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Poland,” Irving said. “We try to do as many festivals as we can fit in. On the next tour in 2015, we will perform at RockHard in Germany, which is 10,000 strong in attendance.” Irving’s involvement in While Heaven Wept is a full-time commitment, but he still considers it extracurricular. He is a diabetes specialty representative with Eli Lilly and Company and an independent coach for Beachbody, a company that markets home-exercise DVDs, including the popular

The cover of While Heaven Wept’s most recent album, “Suspended at Aphelion,” which was released in November

P90X. But Irving said his most important priority is family, and he makes the most of time with his wife and two children at Smith Mountain Lake, the spot he has wanted to call home since he was young. “My aunt lived at SML when I was a child and I grew up making many trips here,” Irving said. “Any weekends that were free, you could bet my brothers and I would be somewhere near Rabbit Island, where we would beach our ugly green pontoon and camp all weekend. I can remember, at that time, thinking it was my biggest dream to one day own a place here.” The fulfillment of that boyhood desire came in 2012 when the Irvings built their lakefront home. “Our lives here at Smith Mountain Lake are fantastic. We have found amazing friends here and spend a lot of our time at dinner parties, boating, sitting by the lakeside fire pit and simply watching the lake,” said Irving. “I’ve seen a lot of the world, but no one will ever be able to convince me that this isn’t the most special and beautiful place on earth.”

artly, my story is about numbers. In early 2013, newly retired at age 59 — and 65 pounds overweight — I started training for what would be my first-ever long-distance hike along the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, also known as the Appalachian Trail or AT. My short-term plan was to backpack 105 miles end-to-end through Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park. My 10-year goal was to hike all 2,176 miles of the AT, which winds through 14 states from Georgia to Maine, in twice-annual 100-mile sections, as both the motivation and the means to improve my health. Before hiking even my first 10 miles, I knew I would enjoy the unrivaled beauty of the AT. And I quickly learned that a perhaps even greater pleasure would be to meet and hike with many fascinating men and women, young and old, most of whom were far more motivated and far fitter than I ever will be. All would have stories to tell – while hiking or in camp for the night – starting with inviolable “trail names,” an AT tradition whereby hikers hide their true names and reveal something about themselves that may be very important – or merely trivial.

Training Begins

In May 2013, four days into a seven-day, 105-mile hike through Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park, Moneta’s Brian Raub pauses to enjoy the mountain view.

In January 2013, I began walking 5-7 miles daily in the mountains of Costa Rica while visiting family, and then 6-10 miles daily in the gentler hills of The Waterfront community at Smith Mountain Lake. In wet or cold weather, I swam 1-2 miles daily in the pool at the Franklin County Family YMCA in Rocky Mount. SMITHMOUNTAINLAKE.COM

“My feet hurt just to touch at the end of each day, and my legs sometimes burned as I struggled to climb and descend mountains covered with rocks and roots.” — Brian rauB, of hiking a 105-mile stretch of the applachian trail

I lost 35 pounds – more than my backpack would weigh – during the first four months of 2013. Typically, my training and cleanup required a commitment of 2-3 hours each day. In addition to the exercise regimen, I changed my meat-and-potatoes diet to include more fresh greens, less meat and fewer overall calories. In the process, I “cured” my high cholesterol, reduced my high blood pressure and eliminated sciatica pain caused by body weight pinching a nerve. I usually looked forward to walking or swimming, but sometimes skipped a day or two – when high humidity or other excuses intervened. Three “lazy” days could easily become seven. My wife, Lisa, humored me whenever I complained that my clothes felt too loose. But unlike my wrestling days in high school and college, when my coaches and opponents punished inadequate training, my conscience and bathroom scale were my only motivators. Whenever I got sloppy with diet or exercise, I knew the scale would show no mercy. As I shrank, I gave away my size 40 and 38 pants, determined never to need them again. I bought just a couple of 36s, hoping to soon fit into 34s. I thought that would happen quickly, but it didn’t. When

the 36s felt tight, I exercised more consistently. My bathroom scale, and the prospect of buying new 38s, were effective motivators.

Out Of the Gate

I started my first long-distance backpacking trip in mid-May of 2013, at the south end of the Shenandoah National Park near Waynesboro. I planned to finish 105 miles later, at the north end of the park, near Front Royal. I was hiking solo, but you are never truly alone on the Appalachian Trail. Every year, a few thousand determined backpackers start hiking at the AT’s southern terminus in Georgia in February or March, planning to cover the entire length, ending at its northern terminus in Maine by mid-October. Most who succeed do so in 4-6 months. About 20 percent of the starters actually complete their trek in a single calendar year; they earn the revered title of “through hiker.” When I started in Waynesboro, some of 2013’s aspiring through hikers were also passing through. Most were older than 55, or under 25. They had already been hiking more than 850 miles and were lean and strong. I hooked up with some of the older hikers and managed to stay with them — ABOVE LEFT A marker on Springer Mountain in Georgia denotes the start of the Appalachian Trail, which ends 2,176 miles north at the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine. NEAR LEFT Raub prepares to leave the Pass Mountain Hut near Rappahannock, which he says shelters “up to eight tired hikers and several hungry mice” each night.

and most of the younger ones, too — for seven days and 105 miles. In the process, I learned the special value of “Vitamin I” in the life of an Appalachian Trail backpacker. Vitamin I is ibuprofen, taken several times daily to ease muscular pain. I was exhausted at the end of every day and slept from dusk until dawn. My feet hurt just to touch at the end of each day, and my legs sometimes burned as I struggled to climb and descend mountains covered with rocks and roots. But there was a great sense of accomplishment at the end of each day, knowing I could carry myself and a 28-pound backpack 12-20 miles daily, I could sleep and eat in the woods and I could tolerate stinking like my fellow backpackers (and smelling them, too). The AT is all about camaraderie. Nearly all of the men and women I met on the trail were tougher than me, and all had great stories to tell. Some, perhaps, were actually tall tales, but I always listened, nodded and told a few myself that were only mildly exaggerated. From top, water collects in the crevasse of a rock in Shenandoah National Park, one of the least strenuous sections of the Appalachian Trail; a foot bridge is available to assist hikers along a stretch of the AT in Vermont’s Green Mountains, which include more difficult footing, mud bogs and more extended and strenuous ascents. 46 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

On the afternoon of Day 7, I finished my 105-mile hike of the Shenandoah National Park. That’s when I set a 10-year goal to hike all 2,176 miles of the AT, in 21 more 100-mile sections. My motivation to further improve my fitness and health had reached a peak.

Bigger Challenges

I lost five more pounds before embarking in August 2013 on the second leg of my AT journey in Vermont’s more challenging Green Mountains. I would backpack 96 more miles, from Manchester, Vermont to Dartmouth, New Hampshire. Once again, I met and hiked with through hikers who were just a few hundred miles from completing their 2,176-mile journeys. I hiked 12 miles the first day, starting around 11 a.m. Feeling strong, fit and confident, I planned to get an early start and hike 18 miles the next day. My early start was my undoing. Mossy Vermont rocks also are quite dewy at 7 a.m. Less than a mile after leaving camp, I slipped and fell twice in five minutes, splaying both knees. They became increasingly painful as I hiked, and I had to take it slower. The next road crossing was 12 miles away, and it took me two painful days to get there. Many hikers offered water, and one doubled back to carry my pack down the last steep, slippery hill before I reached the welcome road crossing and a “trail angel” drove me back to my car.

Brian Raub (far left) stands atop Telescope Peak, the highest point within Death Valley National Park in California at 11,049 feet above sea level. Raub joined three young hikers from Germany, Latvia and Slovakia for the 14-mile roundtrip hike to the summit.

My second 100 miles on the AT had ended early after just 25 miles. There was no permanent damage to my knees, but it was three months before I could resume a significant training regimen. Facing the inevitability of an aging body, I became less certain of my ability achieve my 10-year goal. Before my third hike, starting at the AT’s southern terminus in Georgia in early May 2014, I got slack with diet and exercise and regained 12 pounds. Out of shape, I cut short the hike after backpacking just 32 miles over four days. After that third hike, I began reading every book I could find that described the experiences of AT through hikers, hoping to ascertain whether I really could – or wanted – to hike all of the Appalachian Trail in 100-mile sections. The more I read, the less capable I felt. What about my mild vertigo – could I hug cliffs in the White Mountains of New Hampshire? Nearly all of the through-hiker success tales featured multi-week streaks of downpours, hail, snow, mud, wind, biting insects, blisters, pulled muscles and other injuries. Could I tolerate those privations, even in small doses? Hiking in sections allows you to time the best climate for each one. But hiking 100 miles, 7-10 days at a time, also means your legs and lungs have to start over every time you hike a new section. Most accomplished hikers agree it takes 3-4 weeks to “get your trail legs,” and I would never reach that point on my 100-mile hikes. 48 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

A NEW ADVENTURE

My original plan was to begin the fourth AT hike in the fall of 2014. Instead, in late-July, I began a 72day, 12,905-mile solo road trip to 22 of America’s 59 National Parks. I day hiked and backpacked more than 150 miles in chunks ranging from 6 to 14 miles. My toughest trek was in Yosemite National Park: 12 miles round trip with 3,700 feet of elevation gain (and a 3,700-foot descent) in 8.5 hours. In Glacier National Park, I hiked where grizzlies and marmots and huge elk roam. In Death Valley National Park, I walked in 122-degree temperatures at 282 feet below sea level, then hiked from a remote campground 8,133 feet above sea level to the 11,049-foot summit of the park’s Telescope Peak. Before I tackle the AT again this year, I will reassess my physical abilities, my tolerance for possible injuries and other privations of long-distance hiking, as well as my weight. I’d like to reach my original goal of 65 pounds of weight loss, but I know that rigorous exercise and a modified diet will not be enough. The dreaded counting of calories seems to be inevitable. Pennsylvania native Brian Raub is a graduate of Yale and Harvard and worked as a poineer in online electronic publishing. In 1996, he founded a1vacations.com, a vacation rental website that became the foundation of homeaway.com. Now retired, Brian and wife Lisa split their time between Smith Mountain Lake and Costa Rica, where their daughter, son-and-law and grandson reside.

A Southern Affair Story PhotograPhy

1947 Rolls Royce, light-up tambourines and the tradition of burying a bottle of bourbon in the ground for 30 days to ensure good weather were just a few of the must-haves that made Heather and Brandon Montgomery’s Smith Mountain Lake wedding the charming Southern celebration of which they’d dreamed. The couple was married last May in an event that combined their relaxed, enjoy-life-to-the-fullest personalities with a touch of grandeur. Since both are Franklin County natives with strong family ties to Smith Mountain Lake, the decision to exchange vows here was an easy one. “Getting married at Smith Mountain Lake was something Brandon and I dreamed about for years,” said Heather. “Our hearts were set on the The Water’s Edge chapel for the ceremony and a reception in the yard of my family home overlooking the lake.” The high school sweethearts met more than 10 years ago when Heather was a sophomore and Brandon a senior at Franklin County High School. After graduating from high school and college – with Brandon also going on to earn a law degree – the couple moved to Charlotte, where Heather is a real estate professional and Brandon works as a corporate immigration attorney. They plan as many trips to Smith Mountain Lake each year as possible, Heather said.

Clockwise from top left, Brandon and Heather Montgomery celebrate alongside the band at their wedding reception; flower girl Ava Claire Davis leads the way to the chapel at The Water’s Edge; the newlyweds depart for the reception; Ron Willard, Heather’s step-father, prepares to chauffer the bride, her mother, father and step-mother to the ceremony in a vintage Rolls Royce.

One trip home over Memorial Day weekend 2013 became a memory they would never forget. “We had plans to spend the day on the lake with friends, but I told Heather we needed to go to Smith Mountain Dock [& Lodge] first,” recalled Brandon. “Instead of stopping there, I drove the boat toward the dam where I got down on one knee — as best I could in a boat — and proposed. She said yes, and we headed back to the house where I had friends and family hiding in the boathouse to surprise her.” Next came a year of wedding planning, which Heather said was an all-inclusive effort from friends and family, including her mother, Kris Willard, a long-time lake-area interior designer who has helped other couples plan their big days. “We would have ended up at the courthouse without the help of my mom. Her experience coordinating weddings and as an interior designer helped make our dreams a reality,” said Heather. “The wedding weekend took a village. Our family 64 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

and friends really pulled together to make sure everything was perfect.” The bride said she wanted a casual, southern-style wedding that was conducive to having fun with friends and family. Since the tiny, restored chapel at The Water’s Edge only accommodates 40, they opted for a ceremony with limited guests and a larger reception for 300, catered by the culinary staff at the nearby country club. “Our guests commented a lot on the spectacular food, which included a seared tuna station, olives dressed up as penguins and Brandon’s request of mac and cheese,” said the bride. “And we are still hearing about the flip flops or ‘dancing shoes’ we offered guests for tired feet.” The florist, Randy McManus Designs of Greensboro, North Carolina, brought a touch of nature inside the reception tent with elegant tree arrangements and paid tribute to the couple’s two dogs, Milly and Lilly, with two dog-shaped topiaries.

TAKING THE PLUNGE

The idea: Have the bride, groom and their pooch paddle a kayak into an idyllic SML sunset. Photographer Jennifer Chaconas would capture the special moment for the couple to use as an engagement photo. What could possibly go wrong? “Heather had just changed clothes, and then they all got in the kayak,” recalled Chaconas, owner of Jolly Jen Photography. “She was getting organized, shifted her weight the wrong way and into the water they all went. My first instinct was to grab the camera and just start shooting. It was really hard to take pictures because I was laughing so hard.” The happy-go-lucky couple could do nothing but laugh, as well, and ended up using the photo above on their save-the-date card. The headline? “We’re taking the plunge!”

“The party highlight was when we brought out light-up tambourines for our guests. My aunt still thinks she is suffering from ‘TE,’ tambourine elbow,” said Heather. To the groom, his bride was the true life of the party. “I have two favorite parts,” said Brandon. “When Heather got out of the vintage Rolls Royce to walk down the aisle. And then seeing her get on stage with the band where she loved hanging out and watching everything going on.” About half of the wedding guests came from out of town, so showing off Smith Mountain Lake was a big part of the weekend agenda. “On Thursday, before the wedding, we took the Virginia Dare out for a welcome cruise for our outof-town guests,” said Heather. “We also set up golf for anyone who wanted to play on Friday and put together a welcome book to tell guests about different local attractions.” The bride added that a spectacular sunset over the lake on the evening of the wedding made their wedding day even more amazing. “It is an indescribable and overwhelming feeling to know all the people you care about came out to celebrate such an exciting time in your life,” she said. “Looking around and seeing people from every part of your life together at the place you love so much was a special thing.”

ABOVE Bryan Hochstein says opening Bootleggers Cafe in Rocky Mount “has been eye-opening, but a fun experience.” RIGHT Virgil’s Goode Chicken ($18.89) consists of marinated and lightly dusted chicken breast with garlic butter shrimp and crab meat finished with a sherry cream sauce. 80 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

An old Coca-Cola bottling plant has been reborn as a restaurant with a theme that embraces the area’s moonshine-making heritage.

rian Hochstein admits he was a little skeptical when long-time friend Gary Jackson called to encourage him to buy a nearly 100-year-old former CocaCola bottling plant and renovate it into a restaurant. Hochstein’s background was in software development, not soups and sandwiches. But the more Jackson, general manager of the Harvester Performance Center, talked about plans to capitalize on Rocky Mount’s hot new venue as a way to transform the town into a destination spot for music lovers, the more Hochstein was intrigued. “I like old buildings and thought this would be a neat one to renovate with its unique history,” Hochstein said. “And I was really interested in becoming part of the revitalization effort.” After purchasing the building on Franklin Street, directly across the street from the Harvester, Hochstein got to work renovating what would become Bootleggers Café, which opened in September.

The restaurant’s name is a nod to Franklin County’s reputation for producing illicit liquor, and the décor showcases the building’s history. The interior paint scheme matches the refurbished exterior Coca-Cola sign and photographs of the restaurant’s namesake entrepreneurs on the walls. Vintage Coke bottles are used as salt and pepper shakers and drinks are served in Mason jars. “Once we came up with the name, everything just started falling into place,” said Hochstein, referring to his collaboration with right-hand man Chris Mushall, former chef at two Smith Mountain Lake restaurants – The Blackwater Café and Jonathan’s. Mushall was running dining services at Lynchburg College and said he had “no plans to get back into the restaurant business” when a mutual friend told him about Hochstein’s plans. Mushall, too, was soon lured by the excitement of the project. “When I met with Bryan and saw his vision and how enthusiastic he was about the possibilities, I decided I really wanted to be involved,” said Mushall, who took the lead on crafting an eclectic menu of contemporary American fare, such as smoked pulled pork sliders, corned beef Reuben 82 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

bake, smoked tri-tip tacos, shrimp and grits and hand-crafted specialty burgers. “We went to the test kitchen early on to determine what people may want,” Mushall said. “There was a lot of trial and error, but I think we’ve come up with a menu that has creativity and flair. As we get the kinks worked out, our intent is to work more local ingredients into the menu, more seasonal vegetables, for example. We want to support the local economy. They’re coming in here and supporting us. It’s a wonderful cycle.” The full bar includes a wide selection of craft beers – including four local brews on tap – wine and creative mixed drinks. Mushall said plans are in the works to feature tap takeovers and monthly beer dinners that involve local craft breweries. Bootleggers soon will expand its kitchen to a 1,400-square-foot building across the street in order to offer additional catering options and “graband-go” items for Harvester attendees and others. Hochstein also has restored a circa-1854 home on 10 acres near the restaurant into a five-bedroom inn. The Early Inn at the Grove once housed the law offices of Confederate Gen. Jubal Early. The inn, Hochstein said, is equipped to serve as a venue

The Coca-Cola bottling facility in downtown Rocky Mount opened in 1921 and operated until 1952. After a major restoration in 2014, the building is now home to Bootleggers Cafe. Jack Fralin of Best Bet Arts in Roanoke spent several days last April refurbishing the painted Coca-Cola insignia on the bricks, known as a ghost sign or ghost mural. In July, Rocky Mount officials commemorated the restoration with an event attended by Alison Patient, a Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated representative. She said the company has been seeking out and refurbishing these types of faded signs since about 2010.

for intimate, upscale dinners, as well as weddings and other special events. Hochstein said response to his revitalization efforts from the community, including many from the SML area, has been overwhelmingly positive. “This is just a beautiful part of the country,” said Hochstein, who commutes regularly from his home just north of Greensboro, North Carolina. “We’re just riding a wave, trying to make it work. We’re hoping our ventures and the Harvester will continue to prosper.”

hroughout his 30 years working in higher education, Dr. Fred Waddell said he would often commiserate with colleagues about what was truly going on within the ivy -covered walls. “If taxpayers, and particularly parents about to send their children to college, could see some of these conditions, they would be appalled,” Waddell recalled saying. “Someone needs to write a book about this.” In 2001, after retiring from teaching family money management and consumer economics at Louisiana State and Auburn, as well as a career consulting on those topics, Waddell moved to SML. However, it took awhile before he decided to tackle a book on the subject that had irked him and his colleagues. “I waited several years before writing it, thinking that eventually someone else would do the work of writing it,” he said. “No one did. And as writers know, a book is something that is inside of us, begging to get out. So, I finally decided to write it,

READER REVIEWS

The Boys in the Boat By Daniel James Brown This is the story of the nine young men who won the gold medal in rowing in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The author integrates the trials, training and triumphs of the rowers in their quest to be the best in the world with the successful efforts of Adolph Hitler to hide his horrific plans to exterminate Jews. Also woven into the story are the efforts of the coach and boat builder/designer to build a cohesive team and the individual stories of these champion rowers. I found the book to be well written and definitely an attention-grabber. — Micki Singer, Moneta

Possession By A.S. Byatt For readers who cherish mystery, adventure, a bit of danger and a lot of love, I recommend this rollicking novel that begins with a present-day scene involving Roland Michell. An impecunious researcher of literary trivia in the London Library who stumbles upon a hot clue to the secret life of Randolph Henry Ash (a fictitious Victorian poet who may or may not be based on Tennyson), Mitchell is off on the hunt for more. Joining forces with the beautiful Maud Bailey, professor of Feminist Studies, the two unravel the threads of Ash’s passionate affair with Christabel LaMotte, a wispy poetess (who may resemble Christina Rossetti). Deeply-versed in poetry and mythology, Byatt weaves a fascinating tale, full of mystic symbolism and almost Rabelaisian humor. Read it and love it — I did, and still do. — Richard Raymond, Roanoke

and called upon a half dozen former colleagues and one highly placed educational consultant to provide material or write certain segments.” “What Colleges and Universities Don’t Want You To See: Reflections of A Rogue Scholar” was published in 2013. “Those who have read it invariably say the same thing: ‘What an eye opener. I have shared it with my son, daughter, nephew, friend, etc., and they all found it helpful as to what to look for, what university marketing PR they should believe, how to minimize college costs and the real reasons why college costs have risen astronomically,’” said Waddell, the author of seven other books. “What Colleges and Universities Don’t Want You To See” is available through the Franklin County Public Library system. It also may be purchased online in paperback through amazon.com. — Andie Gibson, Editor

Shake, Rattle & Roll With It By Vikki Claflin Vikki Claflin will have you smiling from the opening page of “Shake, Rattle & Roll With It: Living and Laughing with Parkinson’s.” I’ve seen Parkinson’s up close and personal. I assure you this writer uses a deft hand to describe the daily struggles with this disease ‑ but never as a pity party! Chapters such as “I Gave Hubs a Pole Dance and He Can’t Stop Laughing” and “But You Should See Me Parallel Park” will have you laughing out loud. This book is for everyone who believes in the power of humor and the human spirit. — Kimba Dalferes, Penhook

’m not big on New Year’s resolutions. Endless promises to lose 10 pounds, eat my veggies and promote world peace usually go by the wayside no later than Feb. 1 – also known as “International I-Blew-the-Resolutions-NowPass-the-Oreos Day.” However, last year I believed I had devised the perfect plan for Hubs and me to set a few goals for the upcoming year. Me: “Hey, honey. How about we write New Year’s resolutions for each other?” “Hmm. Yeah, sure,” replied Hubs, without so much as looking up from the latest David Baldacci novel. “Great! We’ll trade resolution lists on New Year’s Day,” I said. “Hmm. Yeah, sure.” Come the morning of Jan. 1, as agreed, I greeted Hubs at the kitchen table, list of resolutions in hand. “What’s this?” he asked as he spied, but did not pick up, the typed summary laying on his placemat. “It’s your resolutions list,” I said. “Don’t you remember? We agreed to write resolutions for each other this year. Do you have my list?” “Oh, of course. I’ll be right back.” Hubs returned a few moments later with a handwritten sticky note. “How about you read the resolutions I wrote for you first?” I asked. Picking up the list from the table, Hubs cleared his throat and read aloud: “I, the Hubs, being of somewhat sound mind, do hereby resolve to: 1. Spend more time fishing, less time planning to fish. 2. Give up the idea that it’s cute to fart in bed. It’s not cute. 3. Clean out the garage. Not rearrange all the boxes, tools and 10,000 miscellaneous fishing baits, lures and magazines, but actually Clean. Out. The. Garage. 104 January • February 2015 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

4. Stop driving the wife bat-crap crazy. 5. Refrain from leaving dirty dishes in the sink (see No. 4). 6. Clear from the DVR the 1,000 episodes of fishing shows that I’ll in no way ever have time to watch. While I’m at it, I’ll also delete all the NASCAR races and N.C. State football games. (We know who won!) 7. Go ahead and purchase the new trolling motor I’ve been eyeing forever. The damn thing is never going on sale. 8. Carry a pair of readers with me, thus admitting I can’t read a menu without them. 9. Acknowledge that it’s just a little silly for a grown man to be obsessed with ‘Star Wars.’ I am not Luke’s father. 10. Remember that the missus is not a morning person. ‘Good morning, sunshine’ very well could get me killed some day.” Hubs grinned broadly, kissed me on the cheek, and handed the lime green sticky note to me. “Your turn,” he said. “I, Kimba, resolve to: Stay just the way I am, because Hubs thinks I’m perfect in every way. I might want to stop making to-do lists for my husband.” Well played, Hubs. Well played.
