he 2013 Smith Mountain Lake Charity Home Tour will welcome guests by land and water for the 23rd straight year on Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 11-13). What better way to soak in the whole experience than by taking the tour by boat? This year, with the homes clustered nicely along the Roanoke River channel and adjoining Craddock and Witcher creeks, round-trip run time is only about two hours. This estimate allows for docking and occasional waiting for tie-up space (though tour organizers are doing all they can to make neighboring docks available and said they don’t expect low water to inhibit docking this year). Boaters should be able to visit all eight homes in one day. Then again, there is nothing wrong with taking your time, enjoying the scenery, and making the tour two fun days of boating – or a boating day plus a few stops by road. While the visiting order suggested on the following pages is an economical approach, your route may vary depending on departure point and other stops. Before setting out, make sure you have ample gas, sunscreen, water and a fully charged mobile phone. The SML Water Safety Council also recommends all boaters wear life jackets or, at the very least, have them on deck where they can be grabbed quickly in an emergency.

When heading downstream (toward the dam), odd-numbered (green) channel markers will be on the right, and even-numbered (red) markers will be on the left. Going upstream (away from the dam), the opposite will be true. Lower-numbered markers are nearer the dam. Channel markers do not indicate distance to the dam or to one another, but rather channel boundaries in numerical sequence. The Layton home, formerly used strictly for family vacations, became a retirement home after the owners had it redesigned and added a second floor. In the community of Riverbay, Roger and Sybil Smith’s home was formerly a ranch-style house that an architect helped the couple transform into a Gothic timber-frame showpiece with elevated ceilings and large, arching beams. There are 19thcentury antiques, including massive armoires, tall headboards and numerous hand-painted lamps. The lower level features nautical and military items from the collection of Roger Smith, a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general. At the dock are two restored antique boats.

Rick and Pam McKown handled nearly all the finishing of their 9,000-square-foot home after the structure was enclosed. So far, the process has taken approximately 10 years, several of which the couple spent living in the apartment above the garage.
