OE13 Energy Festival Feel the Energy Energy is at the heart of Aberdeen’s vibrant and dynamic economy. Every two years the city plays host to SPE Offshore Europe, one of the world’s most high-profile international energy events in the industry’s calendar. 2013 marks the 40th anniversary of SPE Offshore Europe in Aberdeen and this September to complement the conference and exhibition programme, residents of and visitors to Aberdeen can experience the OE13 Energy Festival, a fantastic line-up of live events, music and entertainment showcasing the best produce and talent from Aberdeen City and Shire. From Tuesday 3 September, the focus shifts to Aberdeen city centre where the Quad at Marischal College will offer a unique venue for a programme of outdoor entertainment including Jazz, international performers and traditional Scottish music. Visitors can wonder at the surroundings of the world’s second largest granite building while listening to exciting performances from a wide range of genres. Aberdeen’s Country Fair will for the first time, be held during the evening in Belmont Street. With crafts on display to purchase, tasting sessions with local producers and street theatre that will make you smile, this vibrant street market is sure to provide a real flavour of the region in

a safe and relaxed environment. Finally, the city will celebrate its relationship with the oil and gas industry in a photographic exhibition at Seventeen, Aberdeen’s cultural hub in Belmont Street by charting the impact of the industry on Aberdeen’s growth and development over the last forty years. With work from Aberdeen based artist Callum Kellie on display and Aberdeen Journals providing images from their huge archive, this exhibition will provide a fascinating insight into the changing face of Aberdeen. Organised by SPE Offshore Europe in conjunction with Aberdeen City Council and sponsored by BP, Shell, Taqa Bratani and the Balmoral Group, this festival provides a unique opportunity to celebrate the energy industry as a driving force in Aberdeen and to share the excitement of SPE Offshore Europe with the local community and visitors to the city. 3

40 Years of Oil and Gas Photographic Exhibition Monday 26th August – Saturday 7th September 2013 10am-4pm, Mon – Sat, Seventeen, 17 Belmont Street, Aberdeen Tel: 01224 644885 Email:2017@aberdeencity.gov.uk Visit Aberdeen’s cultural hub Seventeen and celebrate the city’s forty year relationship with the oil and gas industry, featuring work from local artist Callum Kellie and a selection of images from the archives of Aberdeen Journals. Featuring a selection of full and half broadsheet front pages from through the years, Aberdeen Journals has always focussed on bringing the headlines from the oil and gas industry to its readership. This exhibition will bring together print and images that encompass the many key issues faced by the oil and gas industry, including the social and economic impact of this sector on the development of Scotland and images of the thriving energy industry in action from fields including the Brent, Forties, Ninian and Argyll. Back on the Beach Callum Kellie ‘Back on the Beach’ is a collection of artworks relating to the offshore energy industry, focusing on the human element and the very particular circumstances it places people and families under. Many of the works have not been shown together, however all of the work is the product of Callum’s personal experiences as a child growing up in an offshore family and working offshore whilst undertaking studies at Gray’s School of Art. Much of the work was made whilst on platforms across the North Sea so his first hand experiences are pivotal in the creation of this body of work. Featuring photography, moving image and multimedia works this
show is of a body of work produced over a number of years. Callum Kellie is an Aberdeen based artist working in digital media and photography who has exhibited nationally. Much of his body of work has used the offshore oil industry as a stage to explore themes of family priorities, distances, work and how they don’t always reconcile with each other.

Works on Display NORTH: Father & Son Multi Channel Video Work A duet of complimentary video works titled NORTH: Father & NORTH: Son. The films are of two people a father and a son telling the same story, the birth of a daughter and a sister at Christmas. The Father who was working offshore at the time of the birth and the son who spent the period of the birth in someone else’s home. NORTH: Photographs Colour Ilfochrome Photographs NORTH: uses the offshore oil industry as a stage to explore themes of family priorities, distances, work and how they don't always reconcile with each other. The body of work features a series of 8 Ilfochrome prints of offshore oil platforms and their environs juxtaposed with images of places local to where the artist grew up. 8
Platforms Colour Digital Photographs Platforms is a suite of photographs concerning the relationship between the world of offshore oilrigs and the homes of its workers and their families.
Window Piece Vinyl with video projection The window piece is a multimedia work involving cut vinyl and digital video projection. It will involve imagery evocative of north sea oil platforms and forms of renewable energy such as wind turbines mixed with elements hinting at past industry such as agriculture and fishing.

Vocal ensemble 'Prasnitsa' from Aberdeen's twin city of Gomel, Belarus will perform folk songs, Belarusian folklore and stylised songs. Scottish Night @The Quad www.scottishculture.org Hosted by local radio presenter Gordon Bathgate in conjunction with the Scottish Culture & Traditions Association (SC&T), this night promises to be an enjoyable night for all. Focussed on tradition, SC&T want to bring enjoyment and appreciation of Scottish cultural heritage to a wider audience. Through classes, workshops and social events, active participation in traditional music is encouraged by both their tutors and students. Scottish night features the Blyde Lasses a Shetland-flavoured, Aberdeen-based, worldwidetravelling fiddle, concertina, and vocals duo. Having played together since 2007, Claire White and Frances Wilkins have toured in the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and New Zealand. Claire and Frances released Blyde Lasses’ debut album in 2013. Also performing on the programme is Kenny Hadden one of the pioneers in
re-introducing the wooden "simplesystem" into traditional Scottish music. Featuring on recordings by Dougie MacLean, and Sheena Wellington, among others he was one of the original tutors with the "SC&T" group in Aberdeen, and has been teaching the flute and advanced whistle classes with that organisation since it began 16 years ago. There will also be music from David Anderson and his band, Paul Anderson on the fiddle and traditional and contemporary songs on clarsach, guitar, whistle and fiddle by Alison Hester (voice and whistle), Karen Ward (voice, clarsach, celtic harp and whistle) and Richard Ward (voice and guitar).

Singer Eileen Hunter joins the Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra for a night of classic jazz from the golden age of the great American songbook. Eileen, who hails from Aberdeen, is a singer who is making waves with her pure voice and immaculate phrasing will perform with the Aberdeen Jazz Orchestra featuring the cream of the North East musicians to deliver great swinging sounds. See a specially assembled band play the music from arguably the greatest jazz recording of all time, "Kind of Blue".
