Welcome Welcome, Crusader fans and guests, to another exciting season of Scecina Athletics! For current families, alumni and visitors alike, this program provides up-to-date information and insight into the Fall Athletic program’s vital part of the dynamic life of our school. As a college prep community, we strive to integrate faith in Christ with everyday life by modeling Christ-like values such as respect, care, justice, and forgiveness in all our interactions. We are thankful to all the coaches, volunteers, and benefactors whose support makes this essential portion of the education of our young people possible. We wholeheartedly support and promote sportsmanship based on the values of Christ. Scecina athletes and fans are known for their respect for all and for their sportsmanship. We have received sportsmanship awards from the IHSAA for the last two school years. Keep up the good work. Self-discipline in our athletic program is reinforced by consistently maintaining rules, standards and expectations. Students are encouraged to demonstrate appropriate personal pride by the manner in which they conduct and present themselves both at school and in the wider community. At Scecina, we acknowledge that parents are the first educators of their children. Therefore, we appreciate the trust and confidence of parents who request that we partner with them in this sacred task. This partnership is dynamic and evolving with each student to enable him or her to grow in wisdom and maturity across the 4 years of education at Scecina in preparation for entry into adult life. Thank you for joining us at this interscholastic athletic contest. We appreciate your support. Best of luck to all, and Go Crusaders!

Coach Ryan Keen Ryan Keen is beginning his 12th season as the head boys’ and girls’ cross country teams. A 1996 graduate of Marian University, Ryan competed in both cross country and track. During his tenure at SMHS, the cross country teams have finished as the city runners-up twice (boys’‘00, ‘01) and advanced to the regional championships five times (girls’: ’01, ’05; boys’: ’00, ’01, and ’09). The girls’ team won the ICC conference title in 2005 and 2008. Ryan was an IATCCC girls’ state track coach of the year nominee in 2005 and in 2007 was nominated for the St. Vincent Spirit of Sport Coach of the Year award. Five letter winners return from last season’s team that finished seventh at the conference and city championships. Seniors John Kennedy and Larry Tindall, along with returning all conference runner Michael Michaud and a strong freshmen class, look to make a run for a conference championship and advance out of the New Palestine sectional. Girls - The Lady Crusader cross country team, led by Seniors Delaney Moss, Emilie McLaughlin, Emily Becker and 2010 all conference runner Grace Newhart are out to improve on last season’s 5th place city and 4th place conference finishes. Six letter winners are back from last season’s squad and with a stong group of freshmen/new comers, they have their sights set on a third conference championship and advancing through the New Palestine sectional.

Coach Ott Hurrle Ott Hurrle is in his 34rd year at Scecina. During these years, Mr. Hurrle has taught U.S. History, Government, Economics, and Physical Education. Ott has also served Scecina as Dean of Students, Athletic Director, Guidance Counselor, Director of Development, and Director of Alumni Relations. Coach Hurrle has served as an assistant football, baseball, track and basketball coach and is presently Scecina’s Head Football and Golf Coach. Ott has been recognized by Channel 13 as an outstanding teacher/educator, and was awarded the Channel 13 “Shining Star” Award. He has also been awarded the Ken Leffler Memorial Award for outstanding service to the Indiana Football Coaches Association. He has been named by the Indianapolis Star as the City Coach of the Year and the Marion County Coach of the Year. Coach Hurrle was selected by his fellow coaches to coach in the Indiana Football All-Star Game in 1991. During his tenure as Head Football Coach, Scecina has won the City Championship, 2 Conference Championships, 5 sectionals, 4 regionals, 2 semi state, and 2 State Championships.

Outlook

The 2011 Crusaders will have good size up front and a core of talented running backs, if our quarterbacks progress throughout the season, we could make a good run deep into the play-offs. Defensively, we have good experience and solid players who could prove to be difficult to score on. Our captains, Daniel Kirk, Mitch Singleton, and Thomas Allgood will provide the team with strong leadership.

(L-R) Jessica Toney, Nikki Runner, Carolyn Sausser, Katie Null, Josselyn Borelly, Alana Null, Samantha Irvin, Lauren Stark, Kimberly Strattman, Mercedes Rodriguez, Leeann Sausser, Lydia Cummins, Bob Runner, Emma Cummins

Coach Bob Runner and Asstistant Coach Nikki Runner Bob Runner is in his sixth season as head coach of the Girls’ Golf teams and has helped tremendously with the overall growth of the program. He is also an assistant coach for the softball team. In his first year in 2006, he led the girl’s to a winning season in dual meets as well as a 4th place finish in the City Tournament. Bob and his wife Penny, the softball concessionaire extraordinaire, are the proud parents of two Scecina athletes/alumnae, Kim ‘03 and Nikki ‘05, who serves as the Girls Golf Assistant Coach.

Outlook

The Girls Golf team is looking forward to another positive year with the help of our 6 seniors. We are looking to improve over last year’s season where we had a top 10 finisher in city. We are aiming to have at least 2 Scecina Girls golfers in the top 10, to qualify someone from the team to regionals, and improve our team scores from last year. The hard work from the girls will pay off with a fun positive experience for everyone.

Boys’ Soccer var si t y

(L-R) Row 1: Jonathan Higgins, Marty Heil, Austin Shrum, William Vantwoud, Mac Legere, Eric Tucker, Evan Hvidston, Anothy Salcedo, Michael Michaud; Row 2: Alex Homan, Russell Baxter, Ryan Frain. JD Casper, Sam Myren, Joe Maxwell, Jacob Bakemeyer, Jonathon Lutes, Lewis Bauer, Nick Pasotti

Coaching Staff Nick Pasotti is the head Varsity boys soccer coach as well as a new English teacher at Scecina. He attended Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis before obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Indiana University in 2010. Before working at Scecina, he taught and tutored at Triton Central Middle School and North Central High School during the 2010-2011 school year. He enjoys reading, writing, and watching English Premier League soccer.

Outlook

Alex Homan is the assistant Varsity and head Junior Varsity boys soccer coach. After graduating from Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis, he attended South Carolina University for four years. He has a future job lined up as an employee and CPA at Katz, Sapper, and Miller. He enjoys playing indoor soccer in his spare time at Off-theWall Sports in Carmel.

This season, we are returning our entire starting defense from last season. While scoring goals has been tough during some past seasons, our plan focuses on keeping each player on the field spread out in open space, so we can more effectively move the ball against our opponents. With the new implementation of two classes in soccer (1A and 2A), we will have a better shot at working our way through the state tournament. While we have a tough sectional bracket, including Heritage Christian and Lutheran, we have perhaps one of the most solid teams we’ve seen in a while. With a strong, senior-based defense and senior goalkeeper as well as an intelligent, quick offensive force, the potential for this soccer team to go far in this season’s tournaments is quite tangible. Although our Varsity team looks strong, we have a massive crop of young freshmen that have begun to show ripe talent and will serve our Junior Varsity team (and possibly our Varsity team) in years to come.

Coach Emily Schenkenfelder Emily Schenkenfelder is the Head Coach for the girl’s soccer team. Coach Schenkenfelder is a 2002 graduate of Scecina Memorial High School and played 4 years varsity soccer at the high school level. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis Herron School of Art and Design and is currently pursing a second Bachelor’s Degree from Herron in Art Education. She is also a substitute teacher at Scecina. Coach Schenkenfelder still enjoys playing pick up soccer games and occasional foots-all games in the winter months. Tyler Key, a 2006 Scecina graduate and former 4-year player for the boys’ Crusader soccer team, serves as the team’s assistant coach.

Outlook

Several strong players return to the 2011-2012 girls soccer team, which also features really promising first year players. The players and coaches will continue to grow as a team and work together for a fun and winning season.

Boys’ Tennis va r si t y

(L-R) Nick Boyle, David McCarthy, Marc Boulais, Jackson Yaggi, Alex Card

Coach Marc Boulais Coach Marc Boulais is entering his third season as the head coach for Scecina’s Boys Tennis team. Coach Boulais was an avid tennis player in both high school and college. He was the State Doubles Champion in 1969, and he also won the city singles and doubles tournament. Boulais went on to play tennis in college at St. Edwards University in Austin, Texas, a sister school of Notre Dame, where he received a degree in liberal arts.

Outlook

For many team members, this is the first time they have played high school tennis. Coach Boulais is looking forward to working with all of the new players while pushing his returning players, TJ Walters and Jesse Winnings, to improve and step up as leaders. It is his goal that the team be competitive while working toward personal growth. The Crusaders will face some tough competitors this season, but one of their biggest games will take place on September 20 against Cardinal Ritter. The City Tournament on September 24 will also be a time for the team to come together and show their strengths.

Coach Brian Hawkins Coach Brian Hawkins has been a life-long resident of the Eastside of Indianapolis and is a graduate of Little Flower. Coach Hawkins has accumulated an extensive volleyball background including more than nineteen years experience in volleyball and is currently in his seventeenth year as teacher and coach at SMHS. The 2007 Crusaders captured the ICC volleyball conference with an undefeated conference record of 6-0 and the 2008 team improved their overall record to 23-11. His previous Scecina teams have won four Sectional titles including three in a row: 1999, 2003, 2004, and 2005. The 2005 squad became the first team, since class play began in 1997, to take perennial powerhouse Muncie Burris, to a fifth and deciding game losing in a thrilling 11-15 final game. Coach Hawkins was named one of the 2005 “2A State Coach of the Year” as well as the 2005 “City Coach of the Year” and the 2004 and 2005 “All-East Coach of the Year” by The Indianapolis Star. His playing career has spanned from USAV Indoor Tourneys in the early 90’s to the current AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Qualifying Tour and other regional beach volleyball tours. In 2005, he qualified to compete in a Pro-Exhibition match against the 2000 Sydney Olympic Gold Medalist, Eric Fonoimoana, and his partner Canyon Ceman.

Outlook

The Lady Crusaders look to start rapidly moving in an upward direction this season. Given the newly reassigned sectional, some new roster additions, and the return of many experienced players, along with a veteran coaching staff, the team feels it can contend for some impressive hardware this year!
