The Northeast-10 Conference

Completing its third decade, the Northeast-10 Conference has established itself as one of the premier all-around NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The conference is comprised of 16 northeastern colleges and universities: six from Massachusetts, four from New York, three from New Hampshire, two from Connecticut, and one from Vermont. Founded in 1980 as the Northeast-7, the NE-10 has seen many changes in recent years, most notably when the league expanded from 10 to 15 institutions for the 2000-01 academic year. Franklin Pierce College, the University of Massachusetts Lowell, the College of Saint Rose, Southern Connecticut State University and Southern New Hampshire University were all added to the league that season. In 2008, the University of New Haven joined the conference, replacing Bryant University, which moved to NCAA Division I. And in 2009, Adelphi University became the conference’s 16th member. The field hockey schedule is comprised of 10 conference games, with schools meeting each other once during the regular season (five schools in the NE-10 do not have field hockey: Le Moyne, New Haven, Pace, Saint Rose and Southern New Hampshire). The season is capped off by a six-team conference tournament. The winner of the conference tournament receives an automatic berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament. Conference champions are also crowned in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s golf, men’s ice hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s volleyball.

The 2010 Saint Michael’s College field hockey team is one of the youngest and least experienced squad’s in Carla Hesler’s 12 seasons as Purple Knights’ head coach. However, despite the relative youth and lack of experience, Saint Michael’s could turn some heads in the Northeast-10 Conference this season, and has a chance to return to the league playoffs.

That is the path I hope we will follow together,” he said. “I only hope to be able to continue the strong legacy of Marc and Dana vanderHeyden [Saint Michael’s current president and his wife] and their predecessors.”
