Prevent Colds & Flu Before They Start
Though the holiday season is a joyous time of year, it’s also one when many people succumb to cold and flu. Spending so much time indoors in close proximity to others can increase a person’s susceptibility to flu and cold, so it’s no surprise that the holiday season, when many people spend lots of time celebrating indoors with family and friends, marks the unofficial start to cold and flu season. Despite what Mom might have told you about going out into the cold with a wet head or leaving home without wearing a coat, such actions do not increase your risk for cold and flu. But being cooped up indoors, where germs from others who are sick can fester, can increase that risk. Cold weather also can be a factor, but not for the reason you think. According to a 2007 study from researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the influenza virus is

more stable and can stay in the air longer when the air is cold and dry. Dr. Peter Palese, a flu researcher who is professor and chairman of the school’s microbiology department, examined guinea pigs infected with the flu virus to determine the connection between the flu and cold weather. Dr. Palese varied the air temperature and humidity in the guinea pigs’ environment and determined that flu transmission was best at 41 F, while the prevalence of transmission declined as the temperature rose. By the time temperatures reached 86 F, the virus was not transmitted at all. Low humidity also helped transmit the virus, and high humidity stopped the spread. Flu viruses spread through the air in water droplets expelled from sick individuals’ noses and mouths. High humidity may cause these droplets to fall to the ground before they can infect someone else. Colds are largely transmitted through surface contact with the virus or direct contact with a sick individual. The cold virus is then contracted on the hands and

typically transferred to the nose, eyes or mouth through inadvertent touching of these areas. Spending time indoors in close quarters with other people, which is more common in the winter, can facilitate the spread of colds as well as the flu virus.
In addition, spend as much time outdoors as possible so you can escape potentially contaminated indoor air.
If you come down with the flu, increase the humidity in your home by running the shower with the door open, using a recreational aquarium There are many ways to reduce or boiling pots of water. Beyond Vitamin C: New Ways to Strengthen Your Immune System
Harvard Medical School calls healthy-living strategies a “first line of defense.”
(StatePoint) Daily stress in a busy life can challenge immune system function. No matter what season it is, it’s important to continually build robust immunity, say experts.
To boost the immune system and every other part of the body, treat your body right. Drink in moderation. Quit smoking. Eat a well-balanced diet. Get regular exercise and plenty of sleep.
“The immune system is incredibly complex and we’re learning more each day about what weakens it and how we can strengthen it for better health,” says Larry Robinson, PhD, vice president of scientific affairs at Embria Health Sciences, a manufacturer of natural, sciencebased ingredients that support wellness and vitality. With your optimum health in mind, Robinson and the experts at Embria are offering some tips for warding off illness with a healthy immune system. Healthy Habits One of the most effective strategies for maintaining a healthy immune system may just be common sense.

Key to Cooking with Pumpkins
Autumn is ripe with vibrant colors and scenery. One of the more vivid sights this time of year are the bright, orange pumpkins that adorn walkways and front porches of homes and businesses. Not only are pumpkins ideal for decorating, but they’re also great to eat. Some people who plan to carve jack-o-lanterns mistakenly believe the same type of pumpkin can be used in their favorite recipes. But what carving pumpkins have in visual flair, they usually lack in flavor and substance. Instead, would-be pumpkin cookers should lookHill to other if they plan to Oak Biblevarieties Church serve pumpkin on the menu.

they peak in October. Many smaller pumpkins are better and sweeter for cooking. Mini pumpkins, sugar, cheese, and pie pumpkins are varieties commonly used in recipes. The big jack-o-lantern pumpkins have stringy, watery flesh and will provide little to no pulp for cooking. Select a pumpkin as you would any other type of squash. Look for a firm pumpkin with no bruises or soft spots. The pumpkin also should have a deep orange color. Store pumpkins in a cool, dark area until ready for use to prolong freshness. Wash the exterior of the pumpkin in cool water before cutting to remove any dirt and bacteria on the surface of the pumpkin so it won’t be transferred to the pulp of the pumpkin.

pumpkin pieces in the microwave to cook or you can steam or bake them until the pulp is soft and the pumpkin falls off of the skin. Cool the pumpkins, then puree the pulp until it’s smooth. You may want to strain the pureed pumpkin with a cheese cloth to remove any excess water before using in a pie recipe. Baked breads may benefit from the extra moisture.
Pumpkins are a great source of dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin E, thiamin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, iron, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. They’re also low in fat and calories. Pumpkin puree can replace the oil in some baking recipes, much as you would use applesauce.

Subaru’s XV Crosstrek is not a Crossover, or is it? What exactly is a crossover? The simple explanation is By Mike that it is like an SUV, but is Covello based on a car not a truck. Since Subaru doesn’t sell any trucks here in the USA, does that mean they don’t have any SUVs? Try telling that to the multitude of Forester owners. Some might call the Forester a cute-ute, but what about the gone, but-not-lamented Tribeca? Wasn’t that big enough to be called an SUV back before the term crossover came into vogue? What’s next in the terms of vehicle class naming nomenclature? My week spent with a Desert Khaki Subaru XV Crosstrek 2.0i apparently left me with lots of questions, but I also have a few answers. When I tested the XC Crosstrek Hybrid I called it an Impreza on stilts. Certainly the increased ground clearance (a rock/snow clearing 8.7 inches) is one of the more prominent features. I did not take my tester on any off-road adventures, and thankfully we have had more of a hot then snowy October. Where I appreciated the increased ride height was on the highway and for its ease of ingress and egress. The comfortable bucket seat is just the height for me to get in and out with no practically dropping to the ground like a Corvette requires, or using the retractable running boards to climb up into a Cadillac Escalade.
Like all Subarus (except the BRZ) it comes with Symmetrical All-Wheel drive. I did not get much opportunity to test my Crosstrek’s traction prowess, but my WRX performed feats of climbing my snowy driveway that have yet to be matched. I am confident that the taller ground clearance might make the Crosstrek the new champion.
Prices start at $21,595 for the XV Crosstrek 2.0i. Stepping up to the 2.0i Premium will cost you $22,295. It adds the all-weather package, and allows you to get the CVT and Subaru’s innovative EyeSight drive assist package. My car was so equipped. When Sibling Rivalry Goes Too Far: Dealing with Sibling Bullying
(StatePoint) Bullying outside the home makes headlines daily, but sibling bullying can happen under one’s own roof, and can be misperceived as normal, say experts. “Sibling rivalry and sibling abuse are two separate things,” says Pam Franklin, author of “My Five Sisters,” a memoir of the author’s challenging childhood. “Mental health issues are both at the root of these problems, and can also perpetuate them.” Franklin, who was psychologically and physically abused by her mentally ill older sister, has turned her story into a unique exploration of how dangerous sibling abuse can become if not addressed. She feels her story could help others and is offering insights to those attempting to identify whether behaviors they have witnessed are normal or problematic:

2Cat
Hello, my name is 2Cat! I am approximately 12 years old and ended up at the shelter with my housemate, who has since found a home. When I first came in, I had some health problems due to not having been spayed but a simple operation later and I'm healthy as can be!! I am the perfect example why everyone should spay their cat! (not to mention preventing millions of unwanted offspring!) Who knew?! I am a little shy and tend to sit quietly in my cage, so not too many people notice me.... They usually walk right on by. I have amazing hearing, someone can get a bag of treats out on the other side of the room and I will be right there! I would love to find a quiet home, with a sunny window, where I can watch the birds and squirrels! The CCC is in need of volunteers for both morning and afternoon shifts, 7 days a week. We are also in need of supplies, especially litter (World’s Best/Scoop Away), dry and wet cat and kitten food (Purina/Friskies), paper towels, trash bags, and treats! Any help is very much appreciated! We are located at 289 Thompson Road in Webster and are open Wednesday through Saturday 12pm-5pm. You can see more of our adoptable cats on Petfinder and Adopt-a-pet and we would love it if you would follow us and share our kitties on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com /pages/Community-Cat Connection/183756251774389! Please email us at info@ccatconnect.org for any questions!

5 Reasons to Filter Your Drinking Water
(StatePoint) For years, bottled water has been a go-to for clean drinking. Many believe it tastes better than tap water and assume it’s safer to drink. But at-home filtered water is another alternative, and while it gets less attention, there are many reasons why it could be the best option available. 1. You’ll Drink More Water: If you’ve ever filled a glass with tap water, you’re well aware of the strange taste and even smell that unfiltered water can have. When filtered to remove contaminants like chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, iron and more, the result is better tasting and more healthful water, encouraging you to drink more of it.
