Bring-your-ownbeverage restaurants expand customer possibilities Dining out is a luxury that many people enjoy one or more times a week. In addition to enjoying the cuisine, many patrons are lifting their glasses in a cost-saving trend. The BYOB movement, which can refer to “bring your own bottle,” “bring your own booze,” “bring your own beer,” or “bring your own beverage,” used to be limited to dining establishments without permits to sell liquor. Nowadays, many restaurants promote BYOB so their customers can feel more comfortable and customize their experiences even further. BYOB traces its origins to strict liquor laws and high taxation that can make acquiring liquor

licences prohibitive for some establishments. In New Jersey, for example, municipalities generally are allotted one liquor license per every 3,000 restaurants, although loosening those restrictions is under consideration. Liquor licenses in New Jersey can be expensive. In the town of Montclair, NJ, for example, such licenses may cost business owners more than $1 million. Price tags can be similar elsewhere, like nearby Philadelphia. In the mid1990s, BYOB operations were few and far between in the City of Brotherly Love. Now, according to a report from the Independent Hotel, BYOB restaurants are far more common. Restaurants in cities that are close to areas with vineyards, such as San Francisco, which is a stone’s throw from the famed Napa Valley region, have long encouraged diners to bring their own bottles of wine.

RESTAURANT GUIDE

BYOB stipulations also vary from restaurant to restaurant. While toting in a favorite bottle or cocktail may be free at various establishments, Food & Wine notes that some restaurants have corkage policies. This breaks down to a charge per check or even per bottle to allow patrons to enjoy their own wines. Corkage can run anywhere from a few dollars to several hundred, depending on the restaurant and its existing wine list. Corkage fees may be high to discourage the consumption of less expensive bottles of wine, which can affect restaurants’ profits and create potentially uncomfortable situations for customers. are increasingly creating stylish ways to tote beverages to tables. Since the markup of wine and other spirited beverages can be as high Bring your own beverages remains as 400 percent, BYOB is cost- a popular trend in dining out, effective, even when corkage fees helping diners save money and are considered. Plus, in an ever- helping restaurant owners drum up changing economy, BYOB offers business. restaurateurs yet another way to entice budget-conscious customers. And the BYOB phenomenon has served as a catalyst for innovation. There are web-based guides to finding BYOB restaurants nearby. Plus, wine purse and bag designers

Chicken soup is good for more than the soul Cold season never seems to take a year off. Experts estimate that colds are so widespread that very few humans escape infection. Some people come down with colds more than once per year. That should not come as too great a surprise, as there are now thought to be more than 200 different strains of cold. For the past 50 years, researchers studied two classes of viruses responsible for a total of roughly 100 different incarnations of the common cold. Two years ago, after development of molecular techniques to look at the viral genome, researchers found a third class of rhinoviruses, according to James Gern, MD, an asthma specialist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This discovery doubled the number of potential cold viruses. While there’s no cure for the common cold, cold remedies have been around for centuries. Chicken soup remains one of the more popular cold remedies. Grandmothers have long espoused the virtues of chicken soup with regard to treating colds, but now

research is backing up those claims. Researchers have long examined the potential health benefits of chicken soup in an attempt to understand why it seems to be such an effective tonic at treating colds. A 1998 report found that broth may help improve the function of the tiny hairs in noses called cilia. The cilia help prevent contagions from getting into the body. Hot fluids also can help increase the movement of nasal mucus, helping to relieve stuffiness and congestion. Chicken soup also can help reduce inflammation, which often results as the immune system works to fight the cold virus. A study in the

journal Chest found that chicken soup appears to inhibit neutrophil chemotaxis, which is the movement of certain immune cells to mucus membrane surfaces. As a result, mucus production is inhibited and cold symptoms are reduced. Chicken soup is loaded with immune-boosting vegetables and other ingredients that provide phytonutrients. The American Cancer Society defines phytonutrients, or phytochemicals, as plant compounds like carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol, and phytosterols that are thought to have health-protecting qualities. Chicken

soup may also contain onions and garlic, which are believed to have natural antibacterial or antiseptic properties. An easily digestible comfort food, chicken soup also helps a person feel better because it effectively delivers vitamins and minerals. While some profess that homemade chicken soup is the key to fighting a cold, many commercially-made soups fit the bill as well. The salt, steam, vegetables, chicken protein, and soothing broth combine to form a worthy adversary to the common cold.

Here's how the tax reform plan could affect you (BPT) - With the newly passed tax reform bill, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), now is the time to start thinking about how this will affect you so that you can plan ahead for the outcomes you will start to feel in your paycheck as early as February 2018. This tax reform affects virtually everyone; however, families, homeowners, residents of high-tax states, the medically uninsured and small businesses will be especially affected. Most taxpayers will experience changes that could reduce or increase their taxes owed. If you're not sure how this may affect you, here is a summary of possibilities. Offer good until 2/16/18.

Families Like most taxpayers, many families will be affected by the loss of personal and dependent exemptions of $4,050 per person. However, families with income under $200,000 ($400,000 for joint filers) will be eligible for an increased child tax credit of $2,000. Those with income over that amount may be eligible for a smaller credit. This, along with larger standard deductions, may or may not make up for the loss of the personal exemption. Families with dependents over the age of 16 may also qualify for a new family tax credit of $500 for each dependent and New Jersey, who typically who does not qualify for the child itemize because they have large expenses like real estate taxes and tax credit. state and local income taxes, may Homeowners and residents of not be able to get the full tax benefit for these expenses, which are high-tax states Homeowners and residents of high- capped at $10,000. Pass-through entities (LLCs, partnerships and S corporations) and self-employed individuals will be able to deduct 20 percent of their Medically uninsured Starting in 2019, there will no longer business income, subject to some be a penalty for those without health limits (based on the type of business insurance. 1. Last year’s return, the last two years if this is your first appointment. Chances are much of the information—Social Security numbers, address and the like— will be the same, saving everybody time and reducing the risk of errors. 2. Your W-2. W-2s must be mailed to employees by January 31. They show your income and how much you’ve already paid in income taxes. If you’ve had more than one job this year, you need a W-2 form from each of them. 3. 1099s. If you’re a freelancer or part-time worker, you should have 1099 forms from everyone for whom you’ve worked this year. These forms are also used to report earned interest, cancellation of debt, dividends received and proceeds from broker transactions.

money donations. Keep a list of items and the values you assigned them along with the receipts for any household goods, toys and clothing donations. If you volunteer, keep a record of your mileage and other expenses. 5. 1098 forms. Homeowners can deduct mortgage interest. Also deductible are student loan interest and tuition paid to colleges and universities. 6. If you have a home office, you can deduct some of your rent, mortgage, utilities and so on. Bring any relevant receipts. 7. If you’ve been looking for work, bring receipts for whatever the search has cost you—transportation, paying to join a job search website, hiring a résumé writer or taking relevant courses. This list should get you started, but a tax expert such as an enrolled agent (EA) will let you know about any additional documentation needed to complete your return. Enrolled agents are the only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in tax matters and have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
