Valentine’s Day WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14TH

How chocolate became tied to Valentine’s Day Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings. The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a form of currency at one point.

across Europe. Chocolate houses cropped up in London, and the French elite often indulged in chocolate. Chocolate’s popularity continued to grow, but the dessert was not linked to Valentine’s Day until nearly 200 years later. In the mid-1800s, an enterprising individual named Richard Cadbury was looking for a way to make chocolate even more popular than it already was. He sought out a method to make drinking chocolate more palatable and created “eating chocolates.” These chocolates were packaged in decorative boxes. Eventually, Cadbury saw the benefit of putting images of cupids and roses on the boxes. Cadbury even designed chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts that could be saved as mementos. These chocolates soon became intertwined with Valentine’s Day celebrations.

On the other side of the Atlantic, During the 17th century, chocolate Milton Hershey dabbled in consumption grew considerably

commercializing chocolate as well. Hershey began as a caramel maker, but experimented with covering the caramels in chocolate in 1894. Hershey would go on to develop one of the most successful brands of chocolate in the United States, which included the famous Hershey bar. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) The kisses became wildly popular and made for affordable chocolate gifts on Valentine’s Day.

Many other chocolate manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in special boxes for Valentine’s Day. Russell Stover and Whitmans are two such manufacturers who have long specialized in heart-

Chocolate has long been tied to Valentine’s Day gifting. Whether one believes that chocolate symbolizes heightened status, acts as an aphrodisiac or is just a special treat, chocolates will likely always be associated with the day of love.

Traditionally, men have gifted women with boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. However, that role is reversed in other areas of the world. For example, in Japan, women give gifts — namely chocolates — to the men in their lives to express love, courtesy or social obligation. This tradition first began in 1936 when confectioner Morozoff Ltd. ran the first ever Valentine’s Day ad in Japan through a local English newspaper. By the 1950s, other Japanese confectioners were following suit.

6 common tax filing mistakes to avoid

Here's a closer look at some common tax-filing errors and tips to help you avoid making them.

It's probably safe to say handing cash to Uncle Sam does not top the list of your favorite things. When it comes to filing taxes, making a small mistake can mean delays in processing refunds, paying more taxes than you need to or forking over cash to cover penalties.

Mistake: Not reporting all income. Reporting your income is easy if your employer sends you a wage statement (called Form W-2) documenting what you made throughout the year. But what about the money you earned from any freelance work? Unfortunately, many people forget to report extra Fortunately, there's an easy way income from side jobs such as to make sure your tax return is photography shoots, design projects mistake-free: just take a little extra and Etsy shops. time to double check that you have all your paperwork. different types of income earned during the year, but in some cases you may not receive the document. For example, if you earn less than $600 as a freelance writer, the institution is not required to send you Form 1099-MISC. However, you still need to include the amount earned in your total annual income so it's important to keep your own records of each transaction.

return. "If you need help figuring out account information, don't be afraid to ask your bank for assistance," Jaeger says.

"To help accurately report your income, review last year's return and match your income sources item by item," says TaxAct Director of tax development, Mark Jaeger. "If you discover you haven't received a 1099 for your work, last year's return will serve as a reminder to ask about it. Keep in mind, all freelance or side-gig income is reported on Schedule C as part of your Form 1040."

How to avoid the error: Electronic filing (e-filing) is the quickest and most accurate way to file your tax return. In fact, the IRS typically processes e-filed returns within 48 hours. If you're due a refund, you'll get it quicker if you e-file and choose direct deposit. Your tax professional can help with this, to get you your refund as fast as possible

Mistake: Mistyping bank accounts and personal information. Believe it or not, incorrect bank account numbers or personal information like Social Security Numbers - is one of the main reasons tax returns are rejected. Using a nickname or a shortened version of your legal name also lands near the top of the list.

Mistake: Not e-filing. While 91 percent of tax returns were e-filed in 2016, there are still filers who file a paper return. Going the pencil and paper route often means longer tax return processing times.

Mistake: Incorrect calculations. When the IRS receives your tax return, one of the first steps the agency takes is to check the figures to make sure they add up. Unfortunately, it's easy to miscalculate numbers - especially if you're in a rush or aren't sure what to add or subtract.

How to avoid the error: First, take your time and double check all How to avoid the error: Double numbers. AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, you have an opportunity to further your education by doing some traveling. Don’t let responsibilities at home clip your wings this time around. PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a busy work week is on the horizon, but you are set to make the most of every situation. Your confidence can make a difference. ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, you give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and that’s commendable. Such a positive outlook will serve you and your relationships well. TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, you may do a bunch of sitting around and waiting at work in the days ahead. Stay patient and rest up, as you’ll need energy reserves when things pick up again. GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you may need to work on communicating with some coworkers. Mixed messages can lead to delays, so convene a meeting to clear the air. CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, in attempt to stay calm, you may be suppressing feelings that really should come to the surface. This may only lead to a blowout later on. Transparency is key. LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, it may be tempting to put on an overly cheery attitude, even if things are bugging you. Masking your true feelings may lead to miscommunication. Better to keep things honest. VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, your ego is strong enough to withstand some criticism this week. Use the feedback to develop an even better version of yourself, which will only benefit you in the long run. LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 A current situation has you feeling a bit pessimistic, Libra. But that outlook can be adjusted by looking into the future. Let upcoming plans restore your sunshine. SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, your energy levels may start off very high at the beginning of the week, but they may quickly fizzle out. Roll up your sleeves and try to trudge through. CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Feeling needed this week can quickly recharge your levels of motivation, Capricorn. Helping others is a surefire way to realize personal satisfaction.
