Hi! My name is Hazel. An angel brought me to the shelter when I hurt my knee so that I could get the surgery that saved my leg! So many humans stayed by my side and watched over me while my recovery was in its most fragile state, even when I kept trying to wiggle away and play before my body was ready. I'm only two years old and a healthy girl! I'm doing so well that my doctor thinks I'll stay in one piece without any further surgeries, so don't worry if you see me standing on three paws sometimes. It took me a long time to learn how to walk and trot with one less leg, and now that it doesn't hurt anymore, I'm still trying to do it "right" again. But don't let that fool you, because I LOVE to zigzag around the room like a ping pong ball and scale cat trees like spidercat. Clearly I was worth it! Not only do I resemble the Egyptian Goddess Bastet, but I am an endless source of entertainment and affection all my own.

JUST FOR FUN, BRAGGING RIGHTS - OR YOU CAN HAVE PRIZES DESIGNATED FOR EACH QUARTER FOR YOUR GUESTS!

LOS ANGELES RAMS

squares

New England Patriots

Step ONE

HOW TO PLAY

Start off with an empty 10 by 10 grid. This will give you 100 Squares for people to choose from. We’ve already assigned the Patriots to the columns and the Rams to the rows.

Step Two

Now, start recruiting people to join your Football Squares pool by letting them choose which squares they want. Once all the squares have been filled, randomly assign numbers 0 through 9 to each column, followed by doing the same for each row. Now each square represents a specific score in the game based on the column and row numbers.

Step three

Your Football Squares grid is now complete, and you just need to wait til the game is played to determine who will be your winners. A winner will be determined at the end of the 1st quarter, 2nd quarter, 3rd quarter, and Final Game score. The winner is determined by looking at the last number in each teams' score, and then matching those numbers on the grid and seeing which square intersects those two numbers. An example would be if the New England Patriots are playing the LA Rams in the Super Bowl, and the score at halftime is Patriots 23, and Rams 14. The last number for the Patriots is 3, and the last number for the Rams is 4. The square on the grid that has the Patriots with a number of 3, and Rams score of 4, would be the winner.

How chocolate became tied to Valentine’s Day Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings.

January 30, 2019

French elite often indulged in chocolate. Chocolate’s popularity continued to grow, but the dessert was not linked to Valentine’s Day until nearly 200 years later. In the mid-1800s, an enterprising individual named Richard Cadbury was looking for a way to make chocolate even more popular than it already was. He sought out a method to make drinking chocolate more palatable and created “eating chocolates.” These chocolates were packaged in decorative boxes. Eventually, Cadbury saw the benefit of putting images of cupids and roses on the boxes. Cadbury even designed chocolate boxes in the shape of hearts that could be saved as mementos. These chocolates soon became intertwined with Valentine’s Day celebrations.

The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a On the other side of the Atlantic, form of currency at one point. Milton Hershey dabbled in commercializing chocolate as During the 17th century, chocolate well. Hershey began as a caramel consumption grew considerably maker, but experimented with across Europe. Chocolate houses covering the caramels in chocolate cropped up in London, and the in 1894. Hershey would go on to

VALENTINE’S DAY

Traditionally, men have gifted women with boxes of chocolate for Valentine’s Day. However, that role is reversed in other areas of the world. For example, in Japan, women give gifts — namely chocolates — to the men in their lives to express love, courtesy or social obligation. This tradition first began in 1936 when confectioner Morozoff Ltd. ran the first ever Valentine’s Day ad in Japan through a local English newspaper. By the 1950s, other Japanese confectioners Many other chocolate were following suit. manufacturers soon began packaging their chocolates in Chocolate has long been tied to special boxes for Valentine’s Day. In 1907, Hershey launched production of tear-drop shaped “kisses.” (The chocolates were given their unusual name because of the “smooching” noise made by the chocolate when being manufactured.) February 26th Albert Einstein: Relatively Speaking CHARLTON - In this one-hour interactive performance on Tuesday, February 26 from 6:30pm to 8pm at the Charlton Public Library, actor and storyteller George Capaccio invites you to enter the boundarybreaking universe that is the mind of Albert Einstein. You will discover that time and space are inseparable, that time actually slows down the faster you go, and that if you could travel at the speed of light, time would actually stop! But there’s a lot more to the story than Einstein’s insights into the nature of reality. George focuses on the great scientist’s very human qualities, including his sense of humor, his fondness for Jewish jokes, and his trials and tribulations as a family man. As part of the show, you’ll time travel with George on the trajectory of Einstein’s life — from lowly patent clerk in a Swiss office to world-class physicist. Create snow critters Why do snowmen and women get all of the fanfare this time of year? Just about any living or fictional creature can be molded from snow and embellish landscapes. Use food-grade coloring in spray bottles to added even more creative flair to snow designs.

The amount of time people spend outdoors has dramatically decreased, as the Environmental Protection Agency now reports the average American spends 87 percent of his or her time in a residence, school building or Go on a nature hike workplace. Get a head-start on tax season The dawn of a new calendar year often marks the end of the sometimes hectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy for many families, as the kids go back to school and parents return to work. The beginning of January also serves as a great time to start preparing for tax season. While the deadline to file returns may be several months away, getting a head-start allows men and women the chance to organize their tax documents so they aren’t racing against a deadline come April. The following are a handful of ways to start preparing for your returns now. • Find last year’s return. You will need information from last year’s return in order to file this year, so find last year’s return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to work on your return.

January 30, 2019

www.SmartShopperAd.com

• Gather dependents’ information. While you might know your own Social Security number by heart, if you have dependents, you’re going to need their information as well. New parents or adults who started serving as their elderly parents’ primary caretakers over the last year will need their kids’ and their folks’ social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers upon filing, your return will likely be delayed and you might even be denied potentially substantial tax credits. • Gather your year-end financial statements. If you spent the last year investing, then you will have to pay taxes on any interest earned. Interest earned on the majority of savings accounts is also taxable, so gather all of your year-end financial statements from your assorted accounts in one place. Doing so will make filing your return, whether you do it yourself or work with a professional, go more quickly.

• Speak with your mortgage lender. Homeowners should receive forms documenting their mortgage interest payments for the last year, as the money paid in interest on your home or homes is tax deductible. donated to if you misplaced any receipts. • Book an appointment with your tax preparation specialist now. As April 15 draws closer, tax preparers’ schedules get busier and busier. The earlier you book your appointment, the more likely you are to get a favorable time for that meeting. In addition, if you have gathered all of the information you need by early February, then booking your appointment early means you can file earlier and receive any return you might be eligible for that much quicker.

• Make a list of your charitable contributions. Charitable contributions, no matter how small, are tax deductible. While it’s easiest to maintain a list of all charitable donations you make as the year goes on, if you have not done that, Tax season might not be right then you can make one now. Look around the corner, but it’s never too for receipts of all contributions, early to start preparing your return. contacting any charities you
