reviews, magazine articles, and a cult-classic horror movie, too. His first Peter Fallon novel, Back Bay, established him as “a master storyteller.” He has been following the lives of the great and anonymous in American history ever since and has taken readers from the Pilgrims to 9/11. He was the 2005 recipient of the prestigious New England Book Award, given to an author “whose body of work stands as

a significant contribution to the culture of the region.” Bound for Gold is Martin’s sixth thriller featuring rare-book dealer Peter Fallon, who learns of a lost Gold Rush journal written by a young Bostonian Fortyniner, and travels to modern San Francisco to find the journal. In a starred review, Booklist said “Fascinating and...fast-paced, this adrenaline packed adventure is sprinkled with love, betrayal, and violent death: old-fashioned storytelling at its best...” Martin’s first two novels Back Bay and Cape Cod were re-released as trade paperbacks this summer. This event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.

Commission On Disabilities September Meeting Access Coordinators, Danny and Joan had a two hour meeting with Frank Ramsbottom, building commissioner, to review access issues. There are several lots that are not properly marked with above ground signage, some issues on sidewalks, possibility of better access at some local facilities, and more. Acton is most fortunate to have such a knowledgeable and car-

ing person as our commissioner. Access issues keep us busy and are important to our residents. The VCC has asked local committees and commissions to help increase membership by doing a spot on cable TV. Joan offered to do this. The transition plan, required by the state, is being completed by Corey York. He is checking out the whole town. Kudos! Housing and Transportation

are on going issues. Some members have joined a new local group formed to address the serious housing situation. Accessory housing was discussed as a good option to help, especially with seniors and people with disabilities. We have received several requests by residents who would like this option. Members continue to work on prioritizing their plans for the coming year.

ABRHS Band Celebrates 60 Years A new exhibit titled 60 Years of Pride and Excellence celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Acton Boxborough Regional High School Band. This exhibit presents the history (1958-2018) of the ABRHS Band through photographs, band uniforms, and sheet music. “The best band in the land” has shared their camaraderie and love of music at football games, parades, competitions, and concerts for 60 years. There are many ways to enjoy

this exhibit. Search for familiar faces in the photographs. Flip through the sheet music of the many and varied songs played by the band. Recall wearing the band uniforms on display. Share your memories of the band in the guest book. Admire the first band director’s uniform, also on display, that was worn by Constantine Limberakis and George Revelas in the 1960’s. This exhibit was developed by current ABRHS students working with parents of students and parents of alumni. Photographs were primarily sourced from yearbooks (Torch) from the genealogy collection at the Acton Memorial Library, the Jenks Library at the Acton Historical Society, and the historical collection at the Sargent Memorial Library in Boxborough. Other items were obtained from the Acton Historical Society and ABRHS Music Department. The exhibit is on display at the Acton Memorial Library 486 Main Street in Acton, Massachusetts until October 31. For more information about the 60th anniversary of the ABRHS Band, contact the Acton

now call home. But we seldom hear their stories, even when the immigrants are our friends and neighbors. Suitcase Stories in the Neighborhood provides a venue for immigrants to tell their stories and for you to hear about the struggles and joys of people who now call Massachusetts home. You are invited to St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church in Acton on Sunday, Oct. 21, to hear people talking about coming to America. Speakers are from several nations, including China, Zimbabwe, and Australia. You are also invited to enjoy cookies and mingle with the storytellers. Suitcase Stories in the

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

DELICIOUS AUTUMN! DELICIOUS APPLES!

A man lived by the side of the road and sold hot dogs. He was a hard of hearing so he had no radio. He had trouble with his eyes so he read no newspapers. But he sold good hot dogs. He put up a sign on the highway telling how good they were. He stood by the side of the road and cried: “Buy a hot dog, mister?” And people bought. He increased his meat and roll orders. He bought a bigger stove to take care of his trade. He got his son from college to help him. But then something happened... His son said, “Father, haven’t you been listening to the radio?” If money stays “tight”, we are bound to have bad business. There may be a depression coming on. You had better prepare for poor trade. Whereupon the father thought, “Well my son has been to college. He reads the papers and he listens to the radio, and he ought to know.” So the father cut down on his meat and roll orders. Took down his advertising sign. And no longer bothered to stand on the highway to sell hot dogs. And his hot dog sales fell overnight. “You’re right, son,” the father said to the boy. “We are certainly headed for a depression.” Author Unknown
