Since GEM is exploring Economic Peace as a research theme, we have chosen to focus on one of its fundamentals: well-being in companies. We interviewed graduates involved in this multifaceted subject to share their vision of how they are advancing this societal issue on a daily basis. To illustrate this editorial, the souvenir photo of the 2019 Alumni Relations Seminar, during which we worked on the positioning of our volunteer coordinators and their ideas for shaping our global chapters, a contribution to the well-being of our network! A true sharing of happiness, one that you will also find in the sections "Building Bridges", or in the “Snapshot of our Chapters”.

Another key piece of advice Alkis received from a fellow alumnus: “Find people who have similar careers. Then look at the in-between steps. You rarely land your dream job right away. By starting out with a tech startup, I was able to get my foot in the door and that was half the work towards landing my current job!” ENCOURAGING A STRONG, CONNECTED NETWORK For Alkis, the alumni network is something that supports you throughout your career. “Whether you’re sharing advice or receiving support, the alumni network should be a part of your career every step of the way. I feel a real bond with the network and it’s what motivates me to come back to Grenoble on a regular basis.”

SPOTTING POTENTIAL PROMOTING EXCHANGES BETWEEN STUDENTS AND PROFESSIONALS As a team leader in the global data department at Bloomberg, Miha has been a regular participant at GEM bootcamps and recruitment forums. “It’s a great opportunity to present the company to a large audience. Once students hear about opportunities we offer, they can come to us with specific questions that make for rich and varied exchanges.” Miha’s department for example generally looks for people interested in financial markets, project management, data analytics and data science. “But Bloomberg is a tech company that also operates in the financial industry. So we’re interested in a wide variety of profiles with an entrepreneurial spirit to help us create new products and services. Proactive candidates are essential.”

DES INTERACTIONS SOURCE D’OPPORTUNITÉS
INTERACTIONS THAT OPEN DOORS “I come from the business side to support the recruitment team. During the recruitment forum or bootcamp, I can spend time with motivated candidates and explain what the job looks like. It’s always a pleasant surprise to see how knowledgeable the students are. They often have very targeted and detailed questions. Over the past few years, it’s been fun to cross GEM graduates at Bloomberg who were hired after I spoke with them at a recruitment event.” Alumni events in London also provide an important opportunity for exchanges. “I think it’s great to give back to students and share advice. But it’s also important to meet other working professionals through alumni events. During London gatherings, I get the chance to speak with alumni in other industries and exchange experiences.”
PROMOTING SOCIAL MOBILITY Kizitho grew up in Normandy’s countryside. His high school had no prep classes and his parents knew nothing about business schools. “My math teacher opened a door for me. Without him, I wouldn’t have gone to prep classes.” Well aware of the impact his teacher had on him, Kizitho is committed to facilitating access to business schools for high school and university students. He’s currently a volunteer in two associations, one of which focuses on overcoming prejudice and self-censorship. He encourages and supports students who want to follow a path towards excellence, but lack the know-how or the necessary confidence. “I want to share with students who don’t have the expected social codes,
financial support or self-confidence due to prejudice or a lack of information that excellence is open to all if you can access the right means. I think it’s a pity for someone to miss out because of self-censorship or a lack of information.” Kizitho lives in Bordeaux where he keeps close ties with the GEM community. “I was marked by the professionals who came to meet with us as students.” A memory that motivated his decision to sponsor the 2016 graduating class. “When I speak with business school students, I tell them that yes, they will receive a good education. But more importantly, they’ll find friends, a lifelong community, and maybe love… That was an essential part of my GEM experience!”

Innovative perspectives MEDIATION AT WORK: WHAT IF DIALOGUE WAS THE SOLUTION? Anne-Catherine is an HR expert and the co-director of the Adestan&Kaetera firm, which focuses on matters of workplace quality of life. As a mediator, she’s interested in how people view their relationships at work: “When workplace relationships improve, so does work.” ISN'T MEDIATION THE LAST RESORT WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE FAILS?
WHAT’S A MANAGER’S ROLE IN MEDIATION?
People generally call for mediation when an ultimate limit has been crossed, when absences start adding up, when the work atmosphere has deteriorated, when the quality of work is negatively impacted… Managers realize that action needs to be taken. Yet, the underlying problems have often been around for a long time. It’s a shame to wait for the house to burn down before calling on a mediator to put out the fire.
The manager’s role is fundamental if he or she plays an active part in the team’s relationships. It’s not always easy for managers to find a balance between setting limits and listening. Especially considering they often don’t receive training on dealing with these issues. Managers have to be able to say “stop, I don’t know how to handle this” and ask a third party for help. HR is usually the first important support network for a manager. This can be a real issue for smaller organizations that don’t have a specific reference person for HR.
WHAT SOLUTION DOES MEDIATION OFFER?
HOW CAN YOU PREVENT THE NEED FOR MEDIATION?
Mediation is a solution when dialogue has become strained or impossible. If a given situation suffers from overwhelming emotional reactions, managers need to call upon a third party. The mediator will re-build a space for exchanges in a safe environment that allows each party to participate freely. The goal isn’t always to find an agreement, but rather to encourage reflection about the situation and understand what happened.
This is a question every manager should ask. Today, people who call upon our services for preventive reasons are generally professionals who’ve already experienced workplace conflicts. As a result, they’ve realized it’s important to notice tension early on and act as quickly as possible. This approach requires managers to develop their ability to listen. Learning to identify psycho-social risks is also a determining factor that can help each person express their requirements for a positive work experience. Trying to prevent the deterioration of relationships requires managers to understand their own relationship to work. It’s only once someone finds meaning in their work, feels useful and has a work environment that encourages positive and open exchanges that we can begin to speak about well-being at work.
HOW CAN YOU DETERMINE IF THE MEDIATION WAS SUCCESSFUL? The primary measure of success is when the concerned parties can be in the same room and to speak with each other in a manner that doesn’t cause additional strain. If each party can express their perspective and be heard by the other, that’s a success. Everything is based on nonviolent communication. You have to learn how to reformulate your feelings so that they can be heard by the other party. Solutions are not always immediate. But sometimes it just starts with saying hello again in the morning.
SO, IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO LISTENING AND DIALOGUE? Yes, the real challenge is to create space for dialogue. With pressure from clients and sales objectives, we tend to move as fast as possible by only thinking about what needs to be done. We don’t think about problematic issues. A culture of performance can reduce the freedom to express difficulties. A good place to start is simply encouraging the positive experience of informal discussion during a coffee break. To go further, companies have to think about the space available for employees. Many places naturally offer gym facilities, but they should also think about how to create spaces that support more organized and efficient forms of dialogue and exchange.

on quality of life at work CONVERSATION, THE ART OF SHARED WELL-BEING A weaver of social fabric, a catalyst for optimism… Such are the words Christine uses to define herself. Her calling was inspired by the resilient African women she met during a 5-year stay in South Africa. Following these heartening encounters, she created the Nuit de l’optimisme (Night of optimism) in 2014 and then Affaires d’optimisme, a firm dedicated to implementing initiatives for collective intelligence. She’s also an associate at the Institut Français d'Appreciative Inquiry, a training and research institute that focuses on helping organizations implement the Appreciative Approach. It’s a perspective she deploys to help floundering organizations work towards a better future. CAN YOU DEFINE THE APPRECIATIVE APPROACH?
WHEN DO PEOPLE CALL ON YOU?
The Appreciative Inquiry is a method for change management that builds on what works. We focus on a company’s positive energy, on what it does well, on what contributes to its success.
In general, when things are going badly! Whether it’s a serious crisis or the desire to reorganize and improve, the approach is the same: the directors have to understand that we’re not going to create solutions solely based on their input, but with the input of all employees. We’ll guide them in a collective process to build solutions that support the common good. To do so, directors have to be willing to listen and trust the collective voice.
HOW IS THIS DIFFERENT FROM MEDIATION FOR EXAMPLE? Mediation generally works well for issues that affect a small group of people. The Appreciative Inquiry mobilizes the entire group: all employees from the cleaning lady to top management. The method adapts to any organization that would like to think collectively about their future regardless of the current situation. It’s an intense experience for the organization and a profound exchange that facilitates changes to the existing model. WHAT IS THIS METHOD BASED ON? Conversation is at its heart. The idea is to underline what works well by focusing on questions related to meaning, motivation and the satisfaction of a job well done. Even in complicated situations, we believe that the potential and engagement of each participant offers a strong building block every organization should count on. But remember: we’re optimistic-realists! We’re not necessarily trying to make everyone agree. The key point is to get everyone communicating no matter what happens.
SO, IT’S ALL ABOUT DIALOGUE? Yes, and getting to know your counterparts. A major part of our approach is based on overcoming prejudice and bias. I often hear employees tell us how they were surprised to see their colleagues in a different light. Our approach helps highlight what each person is doing at his or her own level. The current economic system is unkind to many of us. We have to do away with the ‘every man for himself’ mentality. I completely agree with the concept of economic peace. And I trust the younger generation to rethink our traditional models.
HOW DO YOU ENGAGE THE PARTICIPATION OF THE WHOLE GROUP? The process starts out in pairs and works its way up little by little. The pairs are assigned by mixing hierarchical statuses in order to level the playing field. The idea is to share a story about life at work: even if the exercise is trying, as it often is, conversation enables the pair to highlight what works and recognize the person’s success. The second person in the pair then tells the story to a larger group where it is broken down into parts and analyzed. And once again we share it with a larger group. Everything builds up progressively in order to create trust and enable everyone to speak freely.

MAKING WELL-BEING AT WORK A REALITY!
Burnout, depression or worse… Work sometimes leads us to anything but well-being. And yet, most of us feel the need to work. In economic terms, it enables us to live. In social terms, it sometimes offers us a reason to live. Finding fulfillment at work is a fundamental factor for many of us and requires effort on both individual and group levels. For most of the alumni in this edition, achieving well-being at work is often a matter of finding meaning, respecting each individual and listening to each other.

At its core lies the goal of transforming today’s model that generates not only profits, but also suffering, into a new model built on fostering the common good.
WHAT ROLE DO COMPANIES HAVE IN OUR SOCIETY?
cannot and should not be an end in itself.
Businesses create goods and riches. As a result, they’re a funda-mental factor when it comes to determining the balance and fulfillment of each individual in our society. Unfortunately, our society’s vision of business has been negatively impacted, in particular by the advent of globalization. It’s important that we rethink the role of business in our society. The first raison d’être of a business is to reinforce social cohesion and support the common good. Today, we have to reevaluate our current model.
IS WELL-BEING AT WORK AN ACHIEVABLE IDEAL?
IS THIS VISION COMPATIBLE WITH A COMPETITIVE VISION OF BUSINESS? When the goal of a company is to support social cohesion and the common good, its objectives for performance, profitability and competitiveness are re-instilled with meaning. All business leaders should systematically think in terms of how to improve benefits (i.e., well-being) while reducing negative risks caused by a deterioration in business activity. If we teach managers and organizational cultures that increasing value and profits is the only goal, this simply cannot work. Profits
To consider well-being at work, a business must first meet three fundamental needs: the security of its employees, their recognition and the ability to create. You can only work on well-being once these three needs have been met. A company is not responsible for an individual’s well-being, but it can, and should, implement the conditions that enable employees to grasp their own well-being. It’s risky to think of well-being at work as an ideal that must be achieved. It’s more like a daily commitment that everyone can take part in. Each individual must call upon his or her humanity in order to enact change. Well-being at work is a fundamental part of a greater movement: economic peace. Today, this movement is both a desire and a necessity. It’s hard to say which motivates the other.

Préserver la santé des salariés : un autre vecteur de bien-être Employee health: an important factor for well-being Asbed KECHICHIAN GEM ESC 1995 Cofondateur / Co-founder EverCleanHand, Grenoble
La promotion 1995 est marraine de la promotion 2015
The 1995 graduating class sponsored the 2015 class
It’s a tool to implement health and well-being in companies
A
sbed’s Linkedin page proclaims it loud and clear: his company, EvercleanHand, “supports employee health and reduces absenteeism for the well-being of every individual." How? Thanks to clean hands! It might seem like a surprising solution, yet evidence states that 80% of infections are passed on due to unclean hands. When the flu or gastroenteritis are in peak season, simply disinfecting one’s hands can reduce absenteeism, which is an important hidden cost for companies. This fact offers company leaders a new perspective on employee health.
UNE PRISE DE CONSCIENCE À DÉVELOPPER
RAISING AWARENESS
The idea came naturally to Asbed: “When you travel in airports or public transportation, it’s very difficult to find a place to disinfect your hands. The same goes for company cafeterias. Bathrooms are often not well situated. I was always surprised that nobody thought about the need to disinfect hands.” After a 15 year career in marketing and sales, Asbed decided to transform his personal vision into an entrepreneurial project. “We offer more than just a machine. It’s a tool to implement health and well-being in companies. Our current challenge is to raise awareness so people will understand the need for this solution. As a result, we’re mostly focusing on HR and CSR services.” And the business model seems to be working: Launched in 2016, the company already has 7 employees and has earned several prizes and awards.

fter several years working for a French cosmetics group that underwent many reorganizations, Aurélie is now a Marie Kondo consultant and tidying up coach. It’s a calling that appeared out of the blue during a difficult time in her life, both professionally and personally.
SORTING THINGS TO SEE CLEARLY The never-ending reorganizations in her work life were finally too much for Aurélie. “No one asked for my opinion. Everything was simply decided for me. I couldn’t find any meaning in what I was doing anymore. When I approached the HR team about how I was feeling, they made it clear that they saw things differently. For them, I was the one who was unwell.” Following this, Aurélie dove into the Marie Kondo method “The magic of tidying up.” “I realized that I was also making a lot of sacrifices in my personal life. By adapting to everything I was forgetting myself.” And so, she decided to sort through all her belongings. “It took me 4 months, but I finally decluttered my apartment and it lightened my spirit.” At the same time, Aurélie started sophrology. “The combination of both approaches helped me reconnect with myself and soothe my uneasiness. I was finally decluttered.” SERENE AND EFFICIENT IN DAILY LIFE During a trip to Japan, Aurélie realized she was ready for a new path. “In Japan, everything has its place. Human relationships are peaceful. Everything is fluid and without aggression. I understood that I had to learn how to live for myself and take advantage of the present moment.” Upon coming home, she decided to share her experience with others by training to become a tidying up coach. She applied for a Marie Kondo seminar in London and was selected as one of 100 international participants (99 women and only 1 man!). “It was incredible. For 3 days we spoke about tidying up with people from around the world! We had all applied the method in our own lives. As Marie Kondo says, it was time for us to help organize the world by spreading joy.” After the seminar, Aurélie had to practice the method with several clients, write up reports in English and validate her skills via an online test. After completing her training, she quit her job with equanimity and launched her new professional adventure. “I’m convinced that nothing happens by accident. My life was very linear up until this turning point. I got on a train and stayed on simply because it was moving. But, I finally understood I had to get off in order to find my own values and re-align with myself.” She now shares her peaceful transition with her customers by helping them “sort their past in order to feel good in the present and calm about the future.”

ell-being at work is a daily reality for Stéphane. “Every three years, I have the opportunity to change jobs and experience new, interesting professional challenges. The trust we’re given and the opportunity for evolution are real motivating factors.”
UN CHANGEMENT DE CULTURE
A CHANGE IN CULTURE
While Stéphane always felt good in the company, he saw a real change for the better after a major strategic change was implemented 3 years ago. “We went from a strategy based on economic indicators and the concept of competitiveness to one that focuses on innovation and agility with real consideration for human factors.” For Stéphane, the company’s strength lies in its ability to trust and support its managers so that they can go beyond their technical skills and truly become team coaches. It’s an approach that underlines the value of skills and supports career advancement - a vision that was a match for Stéphane who was given the chance to lead an innovation team despite having a purely financial background.
UNE ÉNERGIE COLLECTIVE
A COLLECTIVE ENERGY
After spending 3 years working on various projects, ‘learning expeditions’, and team work around sharing and discussing best practices, Stéphane has seen a real disruptive change. “The MAIF of today is nothing like the company I knew 12 years ago. We’ve changed how we work and how others see us. We attract talent that wouldn’t have been interested in us a few years ago.” Although Stéphane recognizes that there’s still work to be done and not everybody has hopped on the bandwagon, he has found personal fulfillment thanks to this new dynamic.

anoj is a Global Business Development Manager for “Servers” at HPE. Despite the traditional ‘businesslike’ job title, he underlines the importance of going beyond the pursuit of money for money. “In business, we often make decisions in stressful, intense environments where it’s not easy to consider every factor, especially intangible or human ones. Through inner calm and a better understanding of ourselves, we can make decisions that respect both a business’s need for success and the needs of our planet and mankind.” “We’re lucky at HPE that our top executives and HR manager are on the same page. They encourage these initiatives because they see the benefits for employee well-being, HPE’s business and society. Throughout my career, I’ve also been lucky to work with gentle professionals and great human beings as well as wonderful projects such as the Mindfulness Chair and its Economic Peace Trophies, led by Dominique Steiler.”

BUILDING A CALM FOUNDATION FROM WITHIN How has Manoj developed this perspective? “My roots are in India where the practice of meditation and looking inside yourself is thousands of years old. I remember my grandparents and father having such a practice. Instead of the trendy word ‘mindfulness’, they simply spoke of ‘being fully aware of the present moment.’ My father practiced this throughout his life and it really helped him during his career with the Indian Air Force.” “When I was a young boy, I sometimes practiced with my father, but I didn’t really understand the value of it. As a young professional, I traveled, discovered different continents and focused on having a ‘go-getter attitude’. Yet after achieving success in professional life, you realize there’s still something missing. Top executives in the
corporate world are not known for having stressfree, calm lives. As a result, I came back to the practice and rediscovered the balance and calm it could offer.” CULTIVATING A HOLISTIC PERSPECTIVE In our modern era where everything is very fast-paced and impulsive, it’s quite easy to lose the essence. The need for quick decisions often leads to reactions based on limited factors such as profitability or business goals. “To learn how to respond instead of react, the practice of mindfulness offers a fundamental, positive foundation. It’s the practice of being 100% in the present moment. It connects us to nature and our fellow human beings. It helps one be calm, humble and balanced in order to respond appropriately to critical business situations. When you’re fully present, you can go beyond short-term business targets and think
in holistic terms. This enables us to implement win-win solutions for the company, customers, partners, employees, ecosystem, society and the environment. By winning the right way we can create long-term sustainable relationships.” The practice of mindfulness opens the way for greater awareness: awareness about ourselves, and in turn, awareness of others. “When you’re calm, aware and fully present, it can have a profound impact on any stressful environment. Mindfulness offers a practical approach to answering many important questions: Why am I doing this? How are we supporting our customers? How does our technology advance other industries and society? What heritage will I leave the next generation? Thanks to the balanced perspective of a mindful approach, we can fulfill business targets while giving back to society and contributing to the greater good.”

Nous bénéficions d’une politique de mobilité interne très soutenue. pon starting his Master’s of International Business in 2013, Nitin also joined Sanofi. “I’ve been happy to stay with the company because it’s a great place to work.” Not surprising given that Sanofi is #1 in Capital’s ranking of best workplace conditions. When talking about well-being at work, the subject is vast and the possibilities endless. If we’ve learned anything from our GEM alumni in this edition, it’s that everyone has their own unique idea of the perfect workplace balance. From mindfulness to flexible schedules, sports facilities, games, great cafeterias or company celebrations and events, there’s no single recipe for well-being at work. TRUST: AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT FOR A POSITIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT As Nitin shares about the numerous initiatives available at Sanofi, one common characteristic becomes apparent: trust between employer and employee. “Two things I really appreciate at Sanofi are the ability to work from home and having access to great sports facilities on campus. Traveling to the office in Paris can be very long and Sanofi encourages work from home. Every month, we have several days of home office time. Our managers and HR never question if we take a home office day, but they’re attentive to the days we take in order to ensure safety aspects for our home office. The company culture trusts that employees will actually do their work at home. This enables us to be honest about our needs and simply use home office days when it’s best for us!”
The Sanofi campus in Paris has sports facilities that are accessible during the day and evening. The company also sponsors participation in sports events such as marathons. “There’s complete trust that we will not misuse these facilities. They’re open all day and you go to the gym when you want. It’s a great freedom for someone like me who appreciates having time to go to the gym and play sports during the week.” INITIATIVES TO FOSTER EXCHANGES “Since joining the company, there has been a real change to develop open office space. We have a clean desk policy that enables you to sit anywhere you want. As a result, you spend time next to colleagues from a variety of departments. It’s also not a silent space, exchanges are encouraged and there are separate rooms available if you need a quiet space to make a phone call.” The Community Centers (i.e. coffee break room) and cafeteria are also key spaces for exchanges. “Every morning we have a coffee break together and take time to speak about our weekends, personal lives or have informal work meetings. And the cafeteria is very good so we can all go to lunch together!” exclaims Nitin. “Exchanges are also encouraged through career growth. Sanofi offers strong support for internal career development. Our manager will help us move to a different business activity because the company knows that such changes enable better transversal collaboration and enrich our own knowledge and experience.” *Best employees ranking 2018 www.capital.fr

Marie KEROUEDAN GEM ESC 2002 Co-fondatrice / Co-founder Crackers Résurrection, Bordeaux
*L'abus d'alcool est dangereux pour la santé, à consommer avec modération Excessive consumption of alcohol is harmful to your health. Consume in moderation.
HEALTHY FOR YOU… AND THE PLANET! After graduating from GEM, Marie continued her studies with a Master’s in European Political Sciences. After a first experience in lobbying for traditional French agriculture, she traveled to South America with her partner. “We stayed there 2 years, including an 8 month backpacking trip around the continent. It was an inspiring trip that changed our lives.” With her love for cooking, Marie’s travels helped her develop a strong attachment to sustainable, responsible nutrition. Back in France, she followed up with a Master’s in Anthropology of Nutrition and launched her first blog to showcase the couple's tales of travel and recipes for tasty treats. Her second blog was geared towards sustainable development and she ended up launching a design office focused on studying sustainable nutrition systems. The final revelation came to her during a class at a brewery.
“I wanted to learn how to brew beer. During the class, I learned that the process generates large quantities of waste: 300 kilos of dregs for 1,000 litres of beer!”
Being a fan of zero waste, she brought samples of the dregs back home to try cooking with them. “The tests were a success right away. My crackers tasted great and everyone around me agreed.” Two years later, she created Resurrection with the help of an associate specialized in culinary communications. The brand produces organic crackers made from recycled malt dregs. With locations in Bordeaux and Paris, the company’s first year has already brought 5 employees and 350 partner stores including Biocoop. New products are being developed and the co-founders are preparing to raise funds. The start of a second life for Marie, and one that already seems to be a success!

NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO SERVE THE VULNERABLE Ever since he launched his first project in the GEM incubator, Grégoire has never stopped being an entrepreneur. He’s passionate about new technologies and decided to move to Asia after finishing school. “With Loïc, who’s been my longest associate, it was an obvious choice. Entrepreneurship is less restricted over there.” After living in Thailand, Grégoire now lives in Laos where he’s at the head of several companies, including Newlogic. The company specializes in biometrics and blockchain for governments and NGOs. In 2016, he launched Newlogic in Singapore with the collaboration of three French engineers. The startup is the result of several projects that Grégoire and his associates had already been working on for several years.
CERTIFYING THE IDENTITY OF PEOPLE IN VULNERABLE SITUATIONS
INNER OF THE W LARGEST BLOCKCHAIN HACKATHON
“ID PASS is a solution with multiple applications. We work with NGOs that are fighting human trafficking or providing food aid. We also work with governments to facilitate access to education or legal services. Identity issues are a worldwide challenge, which is why our solution is open source. We’re aware that we can’t solve this problem by ourselves and that’s why we encourage others to participate in the development of ID PASS.” Newlogic is completely self-funded and currently includes around 40 employees in Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and the Philippines.
In June 2018, Newlogic won first prize at the EOS Global Blockchain Hackathon in Hong Kong. Thanks to its ID PASS project, the company received a $100,000 check that will fund the first version of an open source platform dedicated to creating decentralized identification for those without centralized ID papers.
The World Bank currently estimates that more than one billion people don’t have ID papers. And for some of those people, requesting centralized, governmental ID papers could be dangerous due to ethnic or religious discrimination. Yet without ID papers, it’s impossible to access education, healthcare, legal services, banks, insurance, etc. Using the concept of self-sovereign identification, ID PASS offers each individual the opportunity to prove his or her identity using a means that can be displayed or kept secret depending on the situation.

Benevolent management: a key to employee satisfaction Well-being at work is a multi-faceted challenge. From the work environment to management styles or a company’s social impact, numerous factors can help employees enjoy their job and flourish at work. In her DBA thesis, Patricia focused on a key factor for employee satisfaction: a benevolent approach to management. During my research, I spoke with many employees at various companies. Despite their differences, everyone voiced similar needs. As a result, my research results underlined four essential aspects for employee well-being: working conditions, recognition, listening and communication. Patricia’s conclusions are drawn from a qualitative study carried out with four organizations. ORKING CONDITIONS: ADAPTING W TO MATCH EMPLOYEE NEEDS Many employees spoke about the importance of a pleasant work atmosphere. They shared a desire for ergonomic working conditions, flexible hours, home offices, shared lunches with co-workers and managers… All of these examples underline the need for adaptation. The work environment and work schedules have to adapt to employees so that they can balance their personal and professional lives. This means facilitating horizontal management through informal discussions. I interviewed members of an organization whose employees are mostly disabled workers. And these workers were able to perform as well or better than workers without disabilities. The reason for this was simple: the organization and its managers focused on adapting the work environment to meet the employees’ needs. It’s a fundamental factor for employee satisfaction and performance. INFORMAL AND FORMAL RECOGNITION Employees are the ones responsible for creating a company’s value. As a result, they want to be at the heart of the company’s strategy. Whether it’s a formal award or simply a thank you from your manager, recognition is essential. When I interviewed employees that worked hard without any recognition, they expressed strong suffering. Being recognized for your efforts can mean the difference between simply doing a job because you have to and enjoying your job.
LISTENING: UNDERSTANDING AND SUPPORTING YOUR EMPLOYEES We all have difficulties. Whether you have a problem with a particular task or you have problems at home, it's going to impact your work. Taking the time to listen to an employee who’s having a hard time is fundamental. When you’re feeling down, it’s such a wonderful thing to have someone ask ‘Hey, what’s up? Can I help?’ Listening goes hand-in-hand with creating a positive work environment. How can you expect to adapt to an employee’s needs if you don’t first take the time to listen? Listening to someone share a difficulty takes very little time and can offer so much relief. It’s the cornerstone of benevolent management. HONEST, OPEN & HORIZONTAL COMMUNICATION
current job conscientiously. His manager was able to sit down with him and honestly explain that despite his potential, the current situation was causing a real problem. It was something difficult to hear and speak about, but it enabled the employee to get back on track and he appreciated it greatly. BENEVOLENT MANAGEMENT: WATERING POSITIVE SEEDS A benevolent manager looks after his or her team just like a gardener takes care of a garden. You have to plant the right seeds and water them regularly. You also have to keep an eye out for weeds and ensure dysfunctional plants or failures don’t overwhelm the garden. Of course, this can take a little time and energy. But it’s definitely worth it to ensure the satisfaction of employees!
Employees are tired of vertical, top-down communication. Having informal, friendly relationships between employees and managers helps build trust and remove obstacles to open communication. It’s also very important to speak honestly. Sometimes we want to avoid bringing up a problem with an employee because we don’t want to be harsh. But simply having an honest conversation about an issue is in fact greatly appreciated by employees. I remember one employee who was aiming for a high-level promotion. Unfortunately, he was so sure he deserved the high-level job that he forgot to do his

LEBANON, MALI, KUWAIT: WORKING SIDE-BY-SIDE SOLDIERS Since then, she hasn’t stopped working in the field: the Sentinel Operations during the 2015 Paris terrorist attacks, fieldwork in Lebanon and Mali, and most recently, bilateral exercises in Kuwait. Each mission was different and fascinating. “In Paris, I was in charge of media relations. It was intense with lots of tension. In Lebanon, I was in direct contact with the UN General Staff and contingent as well as the Embassy and media. In Mali, I was a war reporter and led a team with a cameraman and photographer. It was my first experience leading a team and I realized a military leader cannot have the same attitude as a company manager. In the Army, you can’t argue with an order because field decisions have to be made quickly.” No matter the mission, Céline was also focused on representing the Army presence, understanding the political and religious factors, following operations in order to communicate on them and building strong relationships with other actors. “I’m grateful for the geopolitical training I received at GEM. I learned to think about these topics and it helped me understand all the reports I receive.” STAYING IN TOUCH WITH CIVIL SOCIETY
Working for the military: living an intense career Céline always wanted to work in communications. After internships in Canada and with industrial companies in Grenoble, she realized two fundamental factors were missing: human contact and field work. Her father, who had a military career, suggested she look at the interesting communications opportunities offered by the Army. He also mentioned she would have to work on her relationship to authority if she chose a military career… “When I was young, I had trouble respecting authority. I always took liberties in how I interpreted instructions.” Céline decided to join the Army after meeting with a GEM alumnus who
worked for the French Army’s information and recruitment branch. “Since we knew each other well, we could speak frankly. His description of the job matched my expectations: intensity, adventure, field work and real contact with teams. A dream!” A SOLDIER ABOVE ALL ELSE Céline started her career in 2013 as part of the Air Force. She worked on a project to create an officer school for supporting roles: HR, communications, finance, etc. The 18-month contract enabled her to discover and learn about the standardized military way of
life. “It was a great learning experience, but the Air Force requires specialized skills that make it hard to partake in missions.” Following her desire for field work, she joined the Army’s 13th engineering regiment in 2014. Her job began with a 4-month military training at SaintCyr. “All people in supporting roles are first and foremost soldiers. When you join a field mission, you have to be able to use a weapon if necessary. I finally found what I was looking for!”
While Céline is passionate about the intensity of her daily work, she remembers to stay in touch with the civilian world. “We have to stay up to date with civilian life, in particular for communications missions. We can’t be old fashioned, an officer has to understand the importance of Twitter for example. Following civilian life also helps prepare you for a career change.” As a military contractor, she knows that she cannot spend her entire career in the Army. “At 31 years of age, I’m happy to have lived all the professional experiences I’ve had, but I also have to prepare for the next step. My partner is in the Air Force. It’s not always easy to deal with the distance brought on by our differing missions and regiments. You have to learn how to plan and dialogue as a couple!” However, before thinking about changing careers, the year 2019 is already full of excitement. Céline will be leaving for a new mission in Lebanon and will certainly have another mission before the end of the year. It seems she won’t be settling down just yet!

Convinced the experience gained from being part of a student association is paramount to success, the current and former members of the GEM Junior Conseil decided to launch the “Jaï Alumni Network”. The idea was to bring together the actors from each of the mandates since the association’s inception in order to provide them with opportunities to exchange with each other and to give guidance to the younger generations involved in the association today. This photo illustrates the Jaï Alumni Network’s kickoff event that brought together 80 attendees from 15 different mandates in September 2018 at PwC France in Neuilly sur Seine. Special thank you to Michel Font, GEM ESC 2005, and Guilhem Garrel, President of the 20182019 Mandate, for the tremendous success of this initiative.

After thoroughly enjoying being part of the GEM Alumni in Montreal community, this past November, Agnès Lau, GEM ESC 2010 - BIB 2007, launched the GEM Alumni in Vancouver chapter. She found support from other alumni, some having been in Vancouver for a number of years already. An unexpected surprise, Kevin Castel, GEM ESC 2012, our Hong Kong coordinator happened to be in town at the time to attend the community's launch event!
In November 2018, the first ever GEM Alumni Convention was hosted on the top floor of the prestigious Delo itte Tower in Paris’s La Defense district with the objective of exchanging experience and expertise. The idea: exhibit GEM’s savoir-faire in an off-campus setting and combine it with our alumni’s expertises to offer the public attractive and constructive content around today’s hotte st subjects. A series of 6 conferences gave GEM’s professor-researchers and alumni the opportunity to interact, both on stage while teaming up for joint presentations and also during the networkin g cocktail that followed. The more than 120 alumni present voted for this new event format heavily focused on ample networkin g time that lends itself to peer exchanges around common themes. We hope to see you at the next edition on November 14, 2019.
