JULIA SLOCOMBE REALLY C.A.R.E.S.

To further reach our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) goals, Smart City takes pride in its C.A.R.E.S. program. It was great to sit down with Julia to learn more about the program’s significance and its impact on supporting women within the organization and beyond.

The C.A.R.E.S. program, an acronym for Community, Accountability, Retention/Recruitment/Recognition, Equity, and Support, embodies Smart City’s commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace culture.

Community initiatives encompass outreach, charitable giving, and volunteerism, reflecting Smart City’s dedication to giving back to the communities it serves. Accountability is maintained through an employee resource group, ensuring compliance and mutual accountability for the DEI and C.A.R.E.S. program.

Retention, Recruitment, and Recognition efforts focus on diversifying the workplace through targeted recruitment strategies and programs aimed at retaining talent. Julia highlights the importance of professional development opportunities for all employees, with a special emphasis on supporting women in leadership roles.

In response to a question regarding the specific support for women within the organization and the wider community, Julia elaborates on Smart City’s efforts to diversify supervisory and management roles. “While historically technology-based companies have been skewed male, we’re actively working to change that narrative,” she explains.

When asked about the overarching goals of the C.A.R.E.S. program, Julia emphasizes the importance of education and awareness. “Each individual brings unique experiences and perspectives to the table,” she notes. “By investing in education and awareness, we can create a workplace where our women thrive and feel valued, while ensuring respect and inclusivity for all.”
