Henrietta Berk: In Living Color An unjustly forgotten Bay Area colorist surges back into the public eye at the HILBERT MUSEUM, August 28, 2021 – January 15, 2022

T

By Mary Platt

he Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University presents a collection of works by Henrietta Berk (1919-1990), on view from August 28, 2021 through January 15, 2022. “Henrietta Berk: In Living Color,” curated by Gordon McClelland, will introduce museum patrons to this gifted (and unjustly overlooked, until now) California artist whose paintings dazzle with bold, brilliant color and brash, vigorous application of paint.

Berk had no formal professional art training at the outset. In a typical 1950s-era “traditional marriage” with a husband who was ambivalent about her art leanings, she merely dabbled in painting at first. Then, increasingly entranced by the medium, she began taking evening painting classes at California College of the Arts in Oakland, where she was twice the age of many of her classmates. At the time, she had no inkling of becoming a full-time professional artist. In fact, up until Henrietta Berk, Pumpkin Still Life, c. 1960, oil on canvas, then she had merely been 20 x 16” Collection of Judy D’Arcy. making a little extra money indulging her hobby by creating decorative wall murals for local interior designers. As she took part-time classes at CCAC while also raising two children, Berk became bemused by the “boys’ club” mentality of the professional art scene. She soon decided to sign her paintings “H. Berk,” using her first initial only – as had many women artists before her, obfuscating their gender to forestall any prejudice from potential buyers. At the school, she studied under Bay Area

icon Richard Diebenkorn and Henry Krell, among others. But her art, there and later, developed an individualism that was entirely her own. She also had a unique front-row seat to the artistic maelstrom of this “second generation” of Bay Area Figurative artists. Berk’s rise to prominence in this hothouse of talents, as she incorporated representational art into an Abstract Expressionist style, was sudden. She began winning numerous art prizes and had a solo show while still a student, which led to many more exhibitions, awards and critical acclaim. “She uses a heavily laden brush and a wide brush,” wrote art critic John C. Oglesby of the Sacramento Bee in 1962. “The effect is like abstract expressionism.” Alexander Fried of the San Francisco Examiner agreed that Berk “reflects the vigorous influence of splashy abstract expressionism. But her rugged thrusts of pigment and bold form clearly belong to the ‘New Image’ of landscape, figure and still life…Her outdoor scenes and her paintings of still life have an impressive temperamental and sometimes romantic impulse.” At the height of her fame in the 1960s, Berk’s paintings were avidly collected by celebrities and others: Julie Andrews and Edward G. Robinson were among those who purchased her paintings. She was profiled in art journals, in newspaper society pages and in popular women’s magazines. One of her paintings appeared in the hit 1967 movie Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. However, Berk fell into unjustified obscurity when she contracted diabetes and her eyesight failed, and her career subsequently waned. Her last major exhibition was at the Hoover Gallery in San Francisco in 1981. She died peacefully, in her sleep, nine years later in 1990. Now the Hilbert Museum re-introduces Berk’s life story and her passionate, colorHenrietta Berk, Floral in Vase, c. 1962, oil on canvas, 20 x 20” drenched paintings Zotovich Family Collection. to a new generation, with this exhibition of works from the Hilbert Collection and on loan from other museums and private collectors Other exhibitions on view at the Hilbert Museum include:. •“Capture the Light: California Landscapes from the Hilbert Collection,” curated by Jean Stern (Aug. 28 – Jan. 15) •“The Disney Superstars: Mickey, Donald and Friends – Movie Art from the Hilbert Collection,” curated by Mary Platt (July 10 – Nov. 12) •“Dressed to Thrill: Fashion in American Illustration from the Hilbert Collection,” curated by Mary Platt (July 10 – Nov. 12) HILBERT MUSUEM OF CALIFORNIA ART AT CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY is located at 167 N. Pipilotti Rist: Big Heartedness, Be My Neighbor is the first West Coast survey of the internationally renowned Swiss media artist. Rist’s installations explore relationships of video and the body; exterior environments and interior psychological landscapes; and reason and instinct. They exuberantly probe the video medium’s capaciousness—for vivid color; sweeping views and extreme close-ups; introspection and cultural critique; and, importantly, the creation of shared experiences within the public space of the museum. LACMA, LACMA’s Modern Art collection, which primarily features European and American art from 1900 to the 1960s, returns to public view with examples of work from the museum’s American, Decorative Arts and Design, and Latin American Art holdings. As in the past, several galleries are dedicated to the Janice and Henri Lazarof Collection—including concentrations of work by Pablo Picasso and Alberto Giacometti—and others are devoted to the museum’s renowned German Expressionist holdings of paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. The installation presents Michael McMillen’s immersive environment Central Meridian The Garage (1981), and recent acquisitions by Josef Albers, Judy Chicago, Theo van Doesburg, Maren Hassinger, Jacob Lawrence, Anne Truitt, and others are displayed for the first time. The Modern Art galleries have been redesigned in collaboration with Frank Gehry and Associates, and include new interpretive texts, a series of thematic audio tours, and an installation soundtrack. Yoshitomo Nara is among the most beloved Japanese artists of his generation. His widely recognizable portraits of menacing figures reflect the artist’s raw encounters with his inner self. A peripatetic traveler, nara’s oeuvre takes inspiration from a wide range of resources—memories of his childhood, music, literature, studying and living in Germany (1988– 2000), exploring his roots in Japan, Sakhalin, and Asia, and modern art from Europe and Japan. Spanning over 30 years from 1987 to 2020, Yoshitomo Nara views the artist’s work through the lens of his longtime passion—music. Featuring album covers nara began collecting as an adolescent, paintings, drawings, sculpture, ceramics, an installation that recreates his drawing studio, and never-before-exhibited idea sketches that reflect the artist’s empathic eye, this exhibition shines a light on nara’s conceptual process. one of the main highlights will be Miss Forest, a 26-foot outdoor painted bronze sculpture that will grace Wilshire Boulevard (through 2/2/2022) LACMA.org

MOCA Jennifer Packer: Every Shut Eye Ain’t Sleep. over the past five years, new york–based artist Jennifer Packer has received increasing acclaim for her portraits and allegorical tableaux, including a series of commemorative floral still lifes. Rendered in virtuosic lyrical style and layered intensity, Packer’s drawings and canvases surface representations of intimacy, embodiment, and loss. They mark an important new direction in figurative painting and were featured prominently in the 2019 Whitney Biennial. organized by MoCA Senior Curator Bennett Simpson, this exhibition presents new and recent works by Packer and is her first exhibition on the West Coast. An outcome of sustained and ongoing engagement with artists and artwork, the Broad collection is distinctive in its exceptional dedication to the full arc of artists’ careers. The Broad has highlighted this depth through expansive presentations in the third floor galleries, featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Kara Walker, Andy Warhol, and Christopher Wool, along with works by many others. An in-depth installation of Jean-Michel Basquiat, now open, features all 13 works by the artist in the Broad collection, including three works on view for the first time at The Broad: Santo 2 (1982), Deaf (1984), and Wicker (1984). Also, an in-depth installation of Roy Lichtenstein, features 22 artworks, with nearly half on view for the first time, including Purist Still Life (1975), Female Figure (1979), Two Paintings: Radiator and Folded Sheets (1984), and Nude with Pyramid (1994). theBRoAD.org

CAAM in Atlantica, The Gilda Region, April Bey’s first solo museum exhibition in Los Angeles, the BahamianAmerican interdisciplinary artist presents an immersive installation that taps into Black Americans’ historical embrace of space travel and extraterrestrial visioning—a cultural movement dating back to the late 1960s and later termed Afrofuturism. Through this Afrofuturist lens, Bey reflects on subjects such as queerness, feminism, and internet culture in vibrant tableaux that combine living plants, video, music, photography, and oversized mixed-media paintings and textiles. The artist positions herself as an alien from the planet Atlantica, while her mission on Earth is to observe and report as an undercover agent. This imagined world and her general interest in storytelling come from her father, who would tell her childhood tales using alien narratives to illustrate how Black people were othered in the united States and The Bahamas. in contrast to the racial oppression and exploitation rampant on Earth, Atlantica offers a beautiful diasporic world in which Black people thrive and flourish, (through 1/17/2022) caamuseum.org Wicker, 1984, part of in-depth installation of Jean-Michel Basquiat, now open, includes three works on view for the first time at The Broad, theBROAD.org

Luciana

ETHOS CONTEMPORARY hen you think of Luciana – Queen of Electro with her platinum albums and her 8 Billboard Number 1s, you don’t immediately think of modern art, but the American art scene has embraced her recent abstracts and pop icons which are not only attracting her fans but wowing the critics. She has always been a painter but the music was so successful it pulled her focus, “I’m totally visual, I’ve always seen the picture first, be it a lyric, a record sleeve, fashion, or a canvas.”

W

June 10th was her first American exhibition at The Grey Matter Museum in Newport Beach co-hosted by Ethos Contemporary Gallery and . It was their most successful event to date and Luciana sold the most pieces putting her on the local art scene with her very first American show. People were taken with her shiny resin and the crowd went crazy when she came out in her iconic Straw Dress to perform her number 1, “I Like That.” They didn’t like it, they loved it.

Luciana by Dennis Leupold

Her collection was born during the pandemic, “Covid was the first time in almost 30 years I didn’t have one gig. I have to express myself, this collection is my pivot, how I channeled my thoughts and kept sane in an insane time filled with unrest and the anxiety of the unknown, not only did painting ground me, it saved me. I have changed immensely over this past year and these canvases are the evidence. I exhale and I am already an entirely different person, we all are. Creating this art made me feel less alone, like I was in conversation with the universe.” Luciana loves to connect to her audience be it through her lyrics or her art, “To me, art is always a collaboration and every piece a self-portrait if the artist admits it or not.” Gray Matter kept a couple of her abstracts until the end of the June, but her pieces, as well as, one-of-a-kind commissions are all available at Ethos Contemporary Gallery. www.ethoscontemporaryart.com
