welcome to year 7! A new year – a new book – new opportunities. In this book we want to help you improve your English but we want to do so much more. We want to entertain you, surprise you, shock you, make you think, make you laugh, and prepare you for the challenges of the crazy, beautiful, wonderful, mixed-up world that we all live in.
6
We want to help you find your spark. We want to find what motivates you and to encourage you whenever possible to develop your spark. When people are trying to do something new there is a very big difference between ‘I haven’t done it’ and ‘I haven’t done it yet’. Just that little word ‘yet’ makes a big difference. I believe I can do it, it is just a matter of practice. I know I can do it, it’s just a matter of trying new ways … I have the confidence to get there! One important part about learning a language is that you have to make mistakes. If you don’t make mistakes you won’t make progress. Making mistakes shows that you are trying. You get better by practising. The more you practise, the better you will get. A top ice hockey player shoots and shoots and shoots. The puck doesn’t always go in, but they learn how to play better when it doesn’t go right. The same thing works in English. The more you practise, the better you will get. It’s up to you to grab the opportunity to speak in English, to listen to others speaking English, to read as much as you can in English, and to write lots of things in English. And that is where Sparks comes into the picture: We want to provide you with a book that gives you the opportunity to use English – to speak it, to debate with it, to question with it – to write it, to listen to it, to laugh at it and to have a lot of fun with it. So now, before we get on with the units, we would like you to get to know Sparks a bit more. Also, take the opportunity to get to know each other better. Perhaps you know your classmates but perhaps there are some new people in the class; or perhaps you are new to the class. Have a look at the welcome exercises in your workbook.
If you don’t make mistakes you won’t make progress.

It's a new dawn. It's a new day.
She looks very enthusiastic and she’s wearing a sports top. She probably does something active, maybe she is a sprinter? I could introduce her to the sports teacher. jack : Quite possibly the class joker? He keeps whispering to Emily and she’s laughing. He seems very confident. I wasn't that confident when I was his age! emily : She really sits upright. Perhaps she is a ballet dancer. What is she reading? It looks like a science book. lewis : Well, he looks very shy – and a bit sleepy. I’ll have to think of some way of helping him come out of his shell. sophie : My goodness, that girl loves to talk! I like her enthusiasm. I wonder how I can help her use all that energy in her school work. alex ander : Wow, look at his hair! I’ve never seen such long hair on a boy before. I think he’s dyed his hair black and he looks very pale. Maybe he’s a punk – or maybe a Goth. What’s the difference? I have no idea. I’ll look it up later. olivia :

It’s the first day in Sharon Munro’s class. She’s nervous as it is her first day as a high school teacher. She wants to get to know her new pupils. The children have name cards on their desks so she can see who is who. Sharon is thinking what kind of children they might be. There’s …

Ms Munro asked the pupils to write presentations of themselves. Read the extracts from each presentation.
Hi, I’m Olivia, I’m crazy about music. I play bass guitar in a band and I want to be a professional musician. I had a motorbike accident three years ago, riding on the back of my dad’s motorbike. I still have a problem with my left foot so I’m not as fast as I would like to be and I probably won’t play soccer for a while. olivia :
Hi I’m Jack. I’m interested in politics but I don’t want to be a politician. I want to be a journalist so I can talk to politicians. My problem is I’m quite shy and I need to work on that if I am going to talk to strangers from all over the world. jack :
emily :
Hello, I’m Emily. I am very interested in science. I would love to be a medical researcher and find a cure for cancer or diabetes. I also love ice hockey which is why I’m sit ting like this. I have a problem with my back. I had a bad fall two weeks ago. It should be okay in a month or two.

lewis :
GO OD M O RN I NG VI ETNAM ! I’m Lewis and I’m a fan of Robin Williams, the greatest actor ever and I want to be an actor like him. If you haven’t seen the film, Good Morning Vietnam, please go and see it. It’s brilliant.

Hi, I’m Sophie. I'm not sure how to describe myself and I real y have no idea what I want to do in the future. Sorry. I think it’s too early to decide. I’m only 13. All I know is that I want to travel and have fun.
Hi, I’m Alex and I like painting. I don’t know if you know Caravaggio, an Italian artist, but I love his paintings. If I could be half as good as him, I would be happy.

1 Compare Sharon’s first impressions with the pupils’ notes. What are the similarities? What are the differences? 2 Of the six pupils mentioned, which one do you think is most like you? 3 For ONE of the pupils, how can they be successful in the area they are interested in? 4 Describe yourself in three words. If you want to, you can choose from the words below:

You’ve Got Mail!

After reading her pupils’ notes, Sharon Munro knows a little more about them and she wants to do her best to support them. She writes an email to Barry, an older teacher, to tell him about her new job and to ask for advice. Have a look at the two emails.

It’s started! After all that training I’m a real teacher! I have a great class with some very interesting characters with so many different dreams. I really want to help them as much as possible. With all your experience of working with children I hope you’ve got some words of wisdom for me. First up there’s Olivia who wants to be a professional musician – a bass guitarist. What can I do to help her? Jack has ambitions to be a journalist as he’s interested in politics. He also seems to have a good sense of humour. Any tips there? Emily wants to get into medical research. What subjects should she concentrate on at school? Like you, she’s also a big fan of ice hockey! I thought Lewis was a bit sleepy but then he surprised me with a very good Robin Williams impression from Good Morning Vietnam. What can I do to encourage him as an actor? Sophie has no idea what she wants to do but she seems to be interested in travelling. Any thoughts? 14

Alex looks like a goth and loves painting. He’s a big fan of Caravaggio. I haven’t seen Alex’s work yet but I looked up Caravaggio on the internet. Amazing paintings! I’d love to hear what you think, Barry. I’m sure you have some great ideas on how to use all their interests and dreams in my teaching.

Olivia: There are three important things Olivia needs to do to be a top musician: Practise, practise and practise! I would also recommend joining a band so that she can enjoy playing with other people. Perhaps you could help her by finding a good guitar teacher who can help her with her technique. Jack: To be a top journalist, Jack needs to have a very high level of English so he should read as much as possible to expand his vocabulary and also to write as much as he can to improve his writing skills. Perhaps he could set up a blog or write for a website. Could you have a word with the person who runs the school website? Emily: An ice hockey fan? I like her already! If she wants to study medicine then she’ll need to do as much

Good to hear from you – and congratulations on your new job! Sounds like you’ve got some interesting pupils there. Let’s take them one by one.

science as possible – and maths. Medicine is one of the most competitive subjects but if she studies hard the sky’s the limit. Can you find some first aid courses that she could do? That would give her some practical knowledge as well. Lewis: A friend of mine is an actor – she’s not rich but she really loves her job. Tell Lewis to look at some of the drama academies that offer summer courses for young people. And perhaps you can help him organise a school play. The more experience he has the better he will become. Sophie: Tell her I was the same at her age – and I didn’t know what I wanted to do until I was twenty. Alex: A painter? Great, tell him he can come round and paint my kitchen! Ha ha. Like with music, Alex needs to practise, practise, practise. There are quite a few evening classes where he could get help from an art teacher and also support from other people who want to be artists. It can be very lonely being an artist. Later he could look at the possibility of going to art school. It’s not easy to make a living as a painter but if it is his passion – nothing should stand in his way. Hope that helps – I look forward to hearing how they all get on! Barry
TALK ABOUT IT! 1 Barry tells Sharon to find a music teacher for Olivia. What other advice does Barry give for Sharon? 2 Barry says that if Emily studies hard ‘the sky’s the limit’. What does he mean by that? 3 When talking about Alex, Barry makes a joke. Explain the joke. 4 Barry gives a lot of advice. Which advice do you think is the most useful? Explain your answer.
