WELCOME TO YEAR 5! Are you ready for more English? Sure you are! You can already speak English. You can talk about your friends, pets and family. You can talk about the food you like (and don’t like). You can talk about adventures. You can talk about feelings – what makes you happy or sad?

You can listen to English... on TV, online, by listening to your favourite singers (who sing in English). You can read English… in books, online, in e-mails and texts from friends.

You can speak English… with friends who like to speak English, with people who don’t speak Swedish, on holiday, when you play online games with other people. You can write English… in your diary (if you want to), to friends from other countries, in letters to your favourite singer/actor. 6

ACTIVITY

Talk to your classmates for two minutes. Tell them: u about your family u about a pet you have or would like to have u about your favourite foods – and food you don’t like u about an adventure you want to do EXAMPLE:

A: I’ve got two sisters and…

B: What are their names? A: H anna and Ulrica. We live with my mum and dad. C: How old is your dad? A: He’s thirty-nine. I haven’t got a pet but I want a snake. B: Why do you want a snake? A: Because…

TOP TIPS

1. When you are speaking English, don’t worry too much about your mistakes. The more you speak, the fewer mistakes you will make. 2. Read as much as possible. The more you read, the more new words you will see. Don’t try to read very difficult books. There are many books in easy English which you will have no (big) problems reading. 3. Listen to as much English as you can. If you’re listening to music, try to sing along with the singer. 4. Try to get a ‘penfriend’ in another country so you can write in English AND learn about a new culture. Perhaps one day you can visit your penfriend.

In this book you will …  read some interesting texts.  listen to a lot of people talking English.  write a wide variety of things in English.  speak and speak and speak and speak in English!

Have fun with Sparks 5! 7

1 FRIENDSHIP RULES! T1

TE X

T1

When you play sport, there are rules. What about friendship? Are there rules? Is it a good idea to have rules? Some people say yes. Read these friendship rules and see if you agree with them.

1

Be there for each other. If one of us has a problem, the other will be there, in good times and in bad.

2

When we have a problem we can sit down and talk about it. It’s okay to get angry but we will never shout at each other and definitely no fighting.

3

We have to be 100% honest — even little lies are not allowed. Even ‘do you like my new shirt/haircut?’ must be answered honestly.

4

We don’t have to see each other every day. We can spend time with other friends and that isn’t a problem.

5

Our secrets are our secrets. We will never tell anyone else.

6

Be original — not a clone. We’re all different and we can celebrate that fact. If one of us buys a certain pair of jeans or has a new hair style, the other does not have to copy it.

rules friendship agree with definitely honest

10

51101323.1.1_sparks5_TB_01.indd 10

2019-12-04 15:44

7

There’s no room for jealousy. We are friends because we like each other. It is not important what clothes we have, what gadgets we own or where we live.

8

We can accept criticism. If one of us is doing something wrong, the other should not be afraid to talk about it.

9

Be reliable. If you say you will do something, make sure you do it. An unreliable friend is not a true friend.

10

Don’t try to change each other. We accept each other as we are, good things and not so good things.

11

Don’t take friendship for granted. Keep in contact; face to face when possible.

1. What do you think is the most important rule? 2. Is there a rule that you think should not be on the list? 3. Do you like the idea of friendship rules? Why or why not? 4. Are there any more rules that should be on the list?

Hi Jack! Did you read that list of friendship rules? Yes, I did. And, good idea or bad idea? I’m not sure. I play a lot of basketball and I accept that there have to be rules for a sport. But I’m not sure about rules for friendship. It seems strange. I agree; it does seem strange to see them written down, but there are some important points. Which ones are you thinking of? Well, take number five for example. ‘Our secrets are our secrets. We will never tell anyone else.’ I had a good friend, Alice, and I told her a very personal secret. She didn’t tell anyone else … … except …? Except her best friend who of course didn’t tell anyone — except a really good friend. Yes, I’ve had that kind of thing happen to me. Before you know it, the whole school knows your secret. And thanks to the Internet, probably the whole world. Very true. How about you? Are there any rules on the list that you think are important? I like number 10, ‘Don’t try to change each other’. except that kind of thing whole

LILY :

Is there a story behind it? Yes, there is. I had a good friend — I used to play basketball with him. He was a great guy but he had this very loud laugh. He sounds like a good guy. I like it when people laugh at my jokes. I kept telling him to stop laughing so loud. And did he? Yes, but … it was strange. He wasn’t the same any more. Do you miss his laugh now? Yes, I do.

Susie and Josh have some good friends. Read the texts and find out more about them.

Hi! My name’s Susie, I’m the one in the dress on the right of the picture. I’m a real bookworm. When I was younger I read a lot of books about The Secret Seven by Enid Blyton. In her books there are seven children who have adventures. I loved those books. I am sure many other children wanted to be part of the secret seven — well, now I am! I have six great friends and we do a lot together. We meet up once or twice a week and talk about everything. If someone has a problem at home or at school, we talk about it. Talking really does help! But the main thing we do is sing; no instruments, just our voices. I have to say I think we’re pretty good!

Hi! I’m Josh and I’m the one in the white, well brown and white, T shirt. I’m with my friend Ziad, from Syria. I’m eleven and he’s fourteen but we’re friends because we both love football. Ziad is the fastest runner I know. He runs down the wing and crosses to me and I score the goals — sometimes with my right foot and sometimes with my head. Another thing I like about Ziad is that he knows so much about the world. He loves reading encyclopaedias and looking on the Internet. And finally, he’s very reliable. I was very close to my grandmother. When she died last year I cried a lot but it was Ziad who always came to see me — and got me out playing football again. I really wish everybody had a friend like Ziad.

Robert Jackson walked down the middle of the train. He was with his grandmother, Patricia Jackson. She watched as Robert walked, not on his feet, but on his hands. Robert stopped next to his grandma, picked up a bottle with his feet and took a drink. It was hot in Oklahoma and it was a long journey on the Heartland Flyer, the train taking them to a town called Norman. They were on their way to meet Bart Conner, a gymnastic coach. — How much longer, grandma? asked Robert. Patricia looked at her cell phone. — About another hour. Listen, if you’re bored, I can tell you one of my stories. Did I tell you about my friend Christian? — Nope, said Robert, watching the fields of Oklahoma flash by. — Christian is a lion. — A lion? said Robert, dropping back into his seat. You’ve got a friend that’s a lion? Patricia smiled. — I lived in London in 1969. I was a young student. I had two good friends, Ace and John. They were wonderful guys from Australia — really warm and friendly. One day they bought a lion. — Like, a real African lion? — Well, Christian was born in England but he was a real lion, replied Patricia. He lived with Ace and John but quickly he became too big for them. They took him to Kenya and Christian began a new life in Africa. — Was he … okay? journey cell phone flash by drop back wonderful

— John and Ace went to Kenya in 1971 to see Christian. People said it was dangerous. Christian was a wild lion now. He could attack the two men. — And did he? — Not at all. He came up and gave them a hug. He clearly remembered his two good friends. — Are you sure this isn’t fake news, grandma? asked Robert, standing on his head on the seat. — It’s 100% true. I’m still in contact with Ace. And there’s a video of when John and Ace met Christian in Africa. — Okay, I’ll check it out. So who is this Bart Conner? What does he do? Why are we going to see him? — Well I only know him from the Internet and from a few e-mails. When he was a boy, Bart found he could walk on his hands and that he was really good at it. Robert sat quietly down next to his grandmother again. — And? — His mum took him to a local gymnastics club. He trained — he went to the Olympics — he won tons of medals and married a gymnast from Romania, Nadia Comăneci. He seems to be a really nice guy. He and Nadia are involved in the Special Olympics. — They sound like a cool couple. Should be fun to meet them. Minutes later, the Heartland Flyer pulled into Norman. It was not difficult to see Bart and Nadia. — Hello, I’m Patricia, said Patricia, shaking hands with Nadia. She then saw Bart do a handstand and walk over to Robert who was also on his hands. They then ‘shook feet’ as they said hello. It was clear to everyone — Bart and Robert were going to be very good friends. TALK ABOUT IT!

FAQ

Adam, 12 I’m worried about a friend of mine from school. Only a few months ago I saw him almost every day. We raced radiocontrolled boats, we played video games, we went mountain biking. But then he started listening to strange music and wearing black clothes. Now I don’t have a problem with the fact that he likes ‘different’ music, but I’m very sad that he goes out with his new ‘friends’ who are about 16. Last week I called him to ask if he wanted to play a new video game. He said, “no thanks, Adam. I don’t play games anymore.” Then he hung up. We were great friends. I don’t want to lose him. FAQ

Victoria, 12 I find this very difficult to write. There’s a girl at school who doesn’t like me. Last month she started saying bad things about me. She said them to my friends and then she said them to me. I heard that she has a lot of problems at home but I don’t understand her. Why is she so mean to me? Why isn’t she nice to me so we can be friends? I would like to help her but it is very difficult when she is so cruel. What can I do?

Harry, 12 I really hope you can help me. I really want to have lots of friends so I tell the other pupils at school that my parents are very rich and that we have a holiday home in Florida. I tell them about going to Disneyland and about an alligator that we found in our swimming pool. But it isn’t true at all. I have never been outside of England and my parents are not rich at all. I’m terrified that someone will find out the truth. Then I’m sure no one will want to be my friend. The easiest thing is for me to continue lying — I can find out a lot about Florida on the Internet. But what if someone finds out I’m lying?
