INTRODUCTION Unnatural events, mysterious creatures, and the struggle between good and evil are often associated with fantasy, but they are also an important ingredient of horror and science fiction. In fact, the concept fantasy includes all literature with an element of the fantastic. In this book I aim to explain the different concepts and show what separates these three fantastic genres from each other, as well as how they came about. There are also discussion questions, extracts and articles, and at the end of each chapter there are assignments to work on. There are checklists for some of the assignments on pages 141–149.
Teacher’s Note: How to use the genres in teaching When I have included these genres in my teaching, my lesson plans have included: 1. Information on the characteristics of the genre 2. The historical background of the genre, and how it developed 3. A discussion of the genre based on selected articles 4. Examples of classic works and authors (read about them, read extracts or whole works, watch films) alternating with questions for discussion 5. Reading and/or watching modern examples of the genre 6. Comparative assignments This is the general basis for the framework of this book. The amount of time spent on each part, and the complexity of the assignments, have depended on the group I have been teaching, the time available and the goals of the course.

1. HORROR Blood, violence and death play a major role in today’s books and films. Is this because we have become desensitized to them, or perhaps even a little deranged? Where does this interest come from? What makes horror so attractive that we choose to watch it or read it again and again?
What is horror? When we hear the word “horror” many of us think of monsters, like vampires and zombies, but also of cold-blooded murderers like Jason in Friday the Thirteenth (1980). But horror is also characterised by is setting. Stories often take place set in an isolated setting, such as an abandoned or derelict old house. It may also be dark and stormy. Feelings of panic and fear are typical of the horror genre, such as when the main character or victim is being chased and may run into or be caught by the monster - or the murderer - at any moment. But it is clear that there are different types of horror. Some films and books build up a frightening atmosphere very effectively but hold back on the blood and violence. Other works delight in guts and gore. It is not always easy to distinguish horror from other genres. There are different kinds of strange otherworldly creatures in other genres, including fantasy. In his book, The Dance of Death, the master of horror Stephen King discusses how difficult it is to define what horror is. He names the film, Alien (1979), as an example of a film that is both science fiction and horror1. For this reason you will find
