welcome to year 8! As Sparks 8 takes over the baton we’d like to take the opportunity to talk about what a cooperative process learning a language is. There are lots of activities in Sparks 8 in which you have to work closely with your classmates to discuss, think critically, create, debate and perform. It might be possible to learn a language on your own but it is far easier, and far more enjoyable, when you work together as a team.
6
”Grit is passion and perseverance for long term goals.” An American psychologist, Angela Lee Duckworth, studied a whole range of people, including school students, to find out what kinds of people ended up being successful. The answer: GRIT. Grit is passion and perseverance for long term goals. Grit involves living life as a marathon, not a sprint. Hopefully you can see the connection between grit and language learning. In Sparks 8 there’s a lot of support for you on your marathon training programme. While there is plenty of work to be done, we’re confident that you’ll enjoy the work – you’ll even find out why marathons are called marathons. In the book there are five units containing a wide range of texts, texts that will show you the world in all its glory – and its imperfections. We hope that you will find them interesting and that they will help you explore subjects that interest you. In the exercises connected to the texts, our aim is to prepare you for an amazing world where English plays an important role. So … a new year, a new book and lots of new opportunities. Before you get started though, we have some welcome exercises for you to familiarise yourself with the units.

Incredible Survivors
orphan föräldralös famine svält in fact faktum är novel roman
Gail and Simon are school friends. During the lunch break, Gail finds Simon in his usual place, the relaxing area with all the bean bags. As usual, Simon has his head in a book. are you reading today, Simon? s imon : It’s a Swedish book called Children from Frostmofjället, by Laura Fitinghoff. gail : Is it any good? s imon : It’s not bad. Seven orphans and a goat called Gullspira are trying to cross mountains and wilderness to escape a famine.
gail :
What
they make it? I don’t know, I haven’t finished it yet. Something tells me they might get hungry and eat the goat. gail : I love survival stories. In fact I’m planning to write a novel about survivors. s imon : Sounds interesting – I love reading the stuff you write. What are your characters going to do? gail : I’m not sure yet. But I’ve done quite a bit of research already. Have you heard about Annie Helmuth? simon : I can’t say I have. Is she a football player? gail : I don’t think so. She was walking in the Yosemite National Park in America when she was attacked by a grizzly bear.
gail :
Do
s imon :

Wow, grizzlies are pretty dangerous! certainly are. s imon : Did she survive the attack? gail : Do a bit of research and find out. While you’re researching, you may like to look up Marina Chapman. s imon : Tennis player – reached the semi final of Wimbledon three years ago. gail : Nope. She was brought up by monkeys in a jungle in Colombia. s imon : What?! How did she end up there? gail : Someone had tried to kidnap her but it didn’t work out. s imon : So she lived like Mowgli, from the Jungle Book. gail : Exactly. s imon : Where is she now? Still in the jungle? gail : As I said, check out Marina Chapman while you’re looking for Annie Helmuth – and while you’re there … s imon : Another survivor? gail : Mauro Prosperi. s imon : Ah yes, the struggling writer who ate snails from his garden to survive while he wrote his best-selling novel. gail : Ha ha, but a nice idea. He was actually a policeman from Sicily. s imon : So Annie Helmuth was attacked by a grizzly bear, Marina Chapman survived years in a jungle with monkeys and Mauro Prosperi was a policeman. Sounds like he had it tough ... gail : He was also a marathon runner and ran the Marathon des Sables, a 156-mile marathon in southern Morocco. s imon : But that’s the Sahara Desert! gail : Exactly, hence the name. s imon : And you can’t run 156 miles in a day – even in normal conditions. s imon : gail :

True, the event takes place over six days. Now
Mauro Prosperi was a pretty good runner and after four days he was in 7th place. But then he ran into a sandstorm. s imon : So he stopped and waited for help? gail : Not Mauro Prosperi. He kept going before finding a place to shelter for the eight hours of the storm. s imon : Wow, brave man. So did he win the … Marathon des Sables? gail : Not exactly. He lost his way and he was eventually found 130 miles away, in Algeria. s imon : Dead or alive? gail : That’s for you to find out. s imon : Oh, come on, Gail. I want to know! Did Annie Helmuth survive the grizzly attack? Is Marina Chapman still living with monkeys in Colombia? Did Mauro Prosperi die in a desert in Algeria? gail : I’m glad to hear you want to know more. I’ve been visiting a writers’ group at the library and we had a talk from a woman who gave 52
us some good advice: Always leave your readers wanting more. s imon : I want the answers, Gail! Tell me what happened to them! gail : Well, I might do that, but before I do, let me tell you about Ernest Shackleton … s imon : He’s the goalkeeper in the Canadian ice hockey team. He made a fantastic save in the 2014 Olympic games in a match against Russia. gail : I think that’s pretty unlikely; he died in 1922. s imon : Aha! I know this one died! So why didn’t he survive? gail : He died of a heart attack. s imon : Sorry, Gail, but that is not as dramatic as the other three. gail : Ah, but you don’t know what he did before he died. It’s probably the most amazing survival story ever. s imon : Are you going to tell me his story? gail : Not today. The lunch break is over and I’ve got a Spanish class. s imon : I’ve got a private study period and I had planned to study some physics but I don’t think I’ll sleep until I find out about your four survivors. gail : Good to see you have a curious mind! Hasta la vista, Simon!

In the previous text you read about four people who were in very dangerous situations. But what happened to them? In the texts below you can read about three of them. Two of these stories are true – one of them is fake. Can you use your skills as a critical thinker and detective to work out which one is fake? Read all three before you make your decision and don’t cheat by using a search engine. Annie Helmuth In 2014, Annie Helmuth and her husband Alex went for a hiking trip to the Yosemite National Park to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. On the first morning Annie just wanted to go for a little stroll on her own so she left her husband behind cooking breakfast. She had walked no more than five hundred metres from the camp when she heard a noise. It sounded like the mewing of a cat but then she realized it was a bear cub. She knew immediately that where there was a bear cub, there was going to be mummy bear not far away. Sure enough, seconds later, a massive grizzly crashed through the undergrowth to where Annie was standing. She had no time to run – she didn’t even have time to scream before the grizzly had knocked Annie to the ground with her massive paw, breaking Annie’s left leg. There was nothing she could do – she was completely at the mercy of the grizzly. ‘Playing dead’ is one technique that is supposed to help you survive a bear attack so Annie lay on the ground, hoping that the bear would no longer see her as a threat and leave her alone. She was only thirty five and was too young to die. Would the grizzly leave her in peace? No, it wouldn’t. The bear swiped at her again, breaking three of her ribs and then bit her arm, breaking the bones. She could smell its stale breath close to her face but Annie continued to play dead. stroll a slow walk a baby bear bear cub undergrowth plants that grow under trees paw the ‘hand’ of an animal like a dog or a bear

After one final angry roar, the bear left, leaving Annie with serious injuries and bleeding badly. Back at camp, her husband was not happy. He had cooked a traditional English breakfast: bacon, eggs, sausages on fresh bagels and a cup of English tea. His wife had said she would only be away for ten minutes and it was already twenty. Her special breakfast was already stone cold. “I love Annie and I like her independent spirit but I was pretty annoyed that she hadn’t come back for breakfast,” explained Alex in an interview. “It was after about half an hour when I started to get anxious. She hadn’t taken her mobile so I couldn’t call her. I wasn’t even sure which direction she had gone in so I couldn’t try to follow her. There was little I could do but sit and wait.” Four hours later Alex saw something moving in the undergrowth. He thought it was a wild animal of some kind but then he noticed it was Annie. “She had dragged herself back to camp with her terrible injuries and I immediately called 999 to get an ambulance. I have never been so scared but thankfully the medical team got her to hospital and the doctors managed to save her life.”

Marina Chapman Marina Chapman was about five years old and lived in Colombia when she was kidnapped from her school. The kidnappers took her into the jungle but then left her. A group of monkeys lived in the forest and while they did not raise her, they did tolerate her and she was able to scavenge food such as bananas when the monkeys dropped some. After about five years in the jungle, Marina saw some hunters. She had lost the power of speech but was able to indicate that she wanted to be rescued. But the hunters sold her to some bad people who made her work in terrible conditions. Marina ran away and lived on the streets of Cúcuta. As a successful street thief she lived on the streets for a few years but was then adopted by a woman called Maruja – who already had nine children of her own. Marina started working for one of Maruja’s daughters and emigrated with them to Bradford in England to start a new life. In Britain she met a man called John and although they didn’t have a common language, they were able to communicate through love. They now have two daughters and still live in Bradford.

Mauro Prosperi It was in 1994 that Mauro Prosperi took part in the Marathon des Sables in Morrocco. On the fourth day of the six-day race, Mauro found himself in a sandstorm and sought out a good place to protect himself from the sand. After eight hours, the storm finally stopped but Mauro had lost his way. He fired a distress flare into the air but no one but Mauro saw it. He walked on for three days, only moving in the morning and evening, the cooler parts of the day. He was desperately thirsty and drank his own urine and also drank the blood of two bats that he found in a shrine. Mauro thought he was going to die but kept walking, eating lizards and snakes that he found. An amazing five days later he found a small oasis where he could drink. Two days after that he met some Tuareg nomads who took him on a camel to an Algerian army base. From there he was taken to hospital and finally back to his home in Sicily. You might think that Mauro’s near-death experience would mean that he has given up marathon running for good. Not Mauro. He kept running and even ran in the Marathon des Sables – but this time ending his run at the finish line!
