quick tips There’s a way that your kitchen should flow so Sims can cook as quickly as possible. If you organise your kitchen in a certain way, you can minimise the amount of time your Sims spend in the kitchen. From the fridge, there should be a counter right next to that. Then, next to that, a stove. In the dining area, consider making a special corner or area with counters for washing up.

once upon

a time In such a diverse community, it’s natural that some parts of the community sink to the back. However, Sims stories are very much alive and well, says Ashleigh

It’s no secret that The Sims franchise has a widely diverse, vibrant community full of talented content creators. From custom content creators to builders to let’s players, The Sims is largely carried by its own gaming demographic and the content they create with and for the game that they love so much. It’s a large part of what makes The Sims so special, but have you ever stopped to think that maybe there might be more out there? What if there was a different

36

kind of content out there made from your beloved video game series that you hadn’t really considered before? Well there is. I’m talking about Sims story writers and if you don’t know what Sims stories are all about or don’t understand why they’re worth your time, I’m here to convince you that Sims story writers deserve just as much (if not more) love and attention as your favourite Sims let’s player on YouTube.

37

smagazineofficial.co.uk

What is a Sims story, anyway? Ew... Simply put, a Sims story is a written story usually hosted on some kind of blogging platform that is accompanied by screenshots from the game to help illustrate the story for the readers. The story can be in a wide variety of styles, from a simple narration from the player’s perspective about what’s happening in their game to something that could very well be seen in a published novel, with complex plots and detailed character development. The screenshots

38

can be raw, unedited shots from the game or edited with a variety of filters and effects to get the feel of the story across more effectively. Most Sims stories are released in installments (or chapters) and readers will return to the blog regularly to read the latest chapter posted of their favourite story. There are all kinds of Sims stories out there, from light-hearted fantasy to gritty, M-rated murder mysteries and intense drama.

> Some storytellers use less traditional ways of telling stories, such as through social media.

The best thing about Sims stories is that they are by far the most versatile and creative way to share Sims content and there’s a story out there for everyone. Unlike let’s plays and builds and custom content, story writers aren’t confined by the limits of the game’s mechanics. The only limit a story writer faces is his or her own imagination and readers will always be surprised by the twists and turns a good story will take them through because those limitations that other content creators face don’t exist for story writers.

pots of coffee and enough tears to float Noah’s Ark. The longer, more technical answer would be that there is a lot more to writing Sims stories than you might think. It might sound easy to just snap some screenshots and scribble up a few paragraphs of text but believe me, there is a lot more going on than just that and when you realise just how much work and time and dedication goes into creating just one Sims story chapter, you’ll think twice before brushing story writers aside in favour of the ever-popular let’s players.

What goes into making a story? The short answer would be a lot of sleepless nights, a dozen

39

smagazineofficial.co.uk

Every story writer is different. Some take their screenshots before writing the chapter, others might write the chapter then gather the screenshots but the general process goes like this.

ONE

Planning and brainstorming

40

Before a story writer can do anything, she needs to know what her next chapter is going to entail, how she’s going to write those events and what kind of screenshots she’s going to need to illustrate her story. The writer usually has an outline of the chapter planned out before doing anything else. The planning process can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on the complexity of the chapter, length and how strongly the writer’s creative juices are flowing, so to speak.

41

smagazineofficial.co.uk

Setting the scene Creating realistic and interesting sets is one of the most vital parts of a Sims story.

TWO

Taking screenshots

42

With the chapter all planned out, the writer knows what screenshots he’s going to need to help illustrate his story. This is a much longer process than you might think. It’s not a simple matter of just snapping some quick pictures of a couple Sims talking and maybe doing a few activities together. Depending on the chapter, sets must be built and Sims must be dressed and set up just right for each individual scene. Things like lighting, angles and blocking must be considered and set up just right, making it very much like a machinima in a snapshot. The average story writer will take anywhere from 80150 screenshots for one chapter during these screenshot sessions.

This whole set building, staging and blocking process can take anywhere from a few days to a few months to complete, depending on the complexity of the scenes. I remember one courthouse scene I wrote took several days to take screenshots for because I had to build the courthouse set, acquire all the Sims I needed in proper attire for a courtroom setting and block the scene and take pictures from many different angles. Another scene I wrote that took place in a hospital required roughly two months of building, planning and blocking.

43

smagazineofficial.co.uk

THREE

Writing the story

44

This might actually be the most difficult aspect of story writing, especially if you are aiming for the kind of story people would expect in a published book on the shelves of their local bookstore. If a story writer has a spontaneous burst of inspiration, she could potentially finish writing her chapter in a day but chances are if she’s a long-time story writer publishing regular chapters on her blog, these bursts of inspiration will be rare. When things go well with the writing process, she might be ready to publish her

next chapter after a few days of writing and polishing it up. If things go very badly, she could be looking at a several month-long writing process. The writer will typically only use between 20 and 30 of her 150 screenshots she initially took in the finished chapter.

As you can see from this three step description, the process of writing a story is much more time-consuming and difficult than recording a let’s play episode for YouTube but in the end, the finished result is well worth the wait because you will be treated to a Sims experience that goes

beyond the game’s limitations and takes you anywhere the author can dream up.

45

smagazineofficial.co.uk

What the heck? Not all stories are serious - many take advantage of the wacky side of the games and make something funny.

So why arent Sims stories popular? It’s difficult to define the term “popular” here, but for the sake of this article, let’s assume that we’re talking about the scale of popularity for the most popular Sims let’s players on YouTube. That’s our bar of comparison for this article. It’s painfully obvious that Sims stories don’t garner that kind of popularity and recognition, especially considering that many people (particularly younger Simmers who are new to the community) don’t even know that they exist.

46

Why is that? Well it would be easy to chalk it up to a general dumbing down of society. Typical arguments like “People just don’t read anymore!” and “Darn kids these days need everything NOW!” instantly spring to mind, I’m sure. There might be some truth in that but it’s also unfair to blame everything on such an easy scapegoat. I think the main cause of story writing’s decline in recent years is YouTube.

"I think the main cause of story writing's decline in recent years is YouTube."

Sims videos certainly aren’t a bad thing at all and I’m not trying to claim that YouTube or Sims let’s players are terrible. I have a few favourite Sims let’s players that I watch frequently (not to mention my boyfriend is a Sims let’s player). YouTube can be a great platform for sharing Sims content, but it is abundantly clear that people prefer the fast pace of YouTube over the slower process of story writing. When I first started writing Sims stories, YouTube was not as popular as it is now, at least not within the Simming

community. I began writing a story called The Charm Legacy, having no idea of how popular it would become but soon enough, my blog was circulating around the community and gaining much more attention than I ever expected it to. I’d receive well over 1,000 hits a day on my blog, several hundred views a day on each chapter and at least 30-60 comments on each chapter. It was astonishing and wonderful. As YouTube became more and more influential among Simmers, I saw my blog stats decline.

47

smagazineofficial.co.uk

In a way, I understand YouTube’s appeal. You can record several videos in a day, edit and schedule uploads throughout the week so viewers get constant, daily updates to your channel. It’s fastpaced. We’re a society built on consumption. More more more, now now now, give me more now. YouTube satisfies that insatiable need to consume constant information in a fast, easy to swallow format. It basically comes down to the simple fact 48

that you just can’t expect a new chapter from a story writer every single day like you can expect a new video from a YouTuber every single day. It doesn’t work like that. Stories are much more complex and require more time than videos, so what do impatient people who want more content do when their favourite story writer is taking a few weeks to put out a new chapter? They go to YouTube and watch endless hours of videos, instead.

Ashleigh’s faves The Emett Legacy by Sianystar99 This woman has been my inspiration since I started writing Sims stories, she is truly a wonderful writer and in my humble opinion, is the pinnacle of great Sims story writers. Rated T Tom & Anabelle by Adventfear I recently discovered my friend Nick’s fantastic science fiction Sims story and it’s a seat-gripper! If you’re a fan of the wacky, strange and unexplainable, this epic alien adventure with a touch of detective mystery and romance will be a great read for you! Rated T Criminal Class by Trollie123 Ollie’s Sims 4 story is another story that’s broken away from the legacy challenge structure. It follows the life of a young woman whose life of crime gets her into some pretty messy situations so if gritty crime drama is your thing, you should check this one out. Rated M Again, I’m not here to tell you to stop watching YouTube but it is very sad to see such an obsession with having everything instantly that we forget to appreciate the things that come slower but are ultimately more rewarding, like a well-written story with illustrations from our favourite game. I hope I’ve convinced you that all the time, effort, care and passion that goes into Sims stories makes them more than deserving of your time and attention, too.

Cartright 100 Baby Challenge by SimmerDownSouth Another recent discovery of mine and a fresh change from the usual legacy challenges. SimmerDownSouth has come up with a really creative plot for the characters of her baby challenge and her writing is just fabulous! Rated M You can also check out Ashleigh’s stories over at New Reflections!

jenba 70

My name is Jen, and I would call myself a die-hard Simmer. I’ve been playing the Sims franchise for over 15 years now, and I don’t see myself stopping anytime soon! I love to create Sims, decorate lots, and of course, play the game, but my favorite thing to do is build houses and community lots.

71

smagazineofficial.co.uk

When, and why, did you start playing The Sims? I read an article about The Sims 1 before it was released, and I knew immediately that I wanted to play it. When I was a kid, I had notebooks full of maps and families I had drawn, along with pictures of houses clipped out of magazines. Into adulthood, I wrote stories and was always building worlds in my head. So The Sims appealed to me immensely. I bought it the day it was released, and I’ve been playing some version of it ever since. And your simblr? In the early days of The Sims 2, I

72

had a blog called Greetings from Mt. Geneva where I posted pictures of my Sims and shared stories. (I even did Pinstar’s first Legacy Challenge and reached the 10th generation! I never managed that again, though I tried a few times.) I loved reading other Simmers’ blogs and gradually became part of the larger Simming community. That led to participating in forums like The Sims Daily, which is where I heard about Simblrs. It looked like fun and a great way to continue to be inspired by other players.

What’s your thought process? I am basically a copycat – I like to copy buildings I’ve seen in real life, whether in my hometown or on the Internet. I almost never start a build without a picture in front of me. I can end up deviating from that picture quite a bit, due to the limitations of the game, or if I just can’t figure out how to do replicate something, but I always need that initial image as a base. 73

smagazineofficial.co.uk

74

What’s the best part about building a house? The best part is after I’ve built the structure and added the windows and siding – when it’s beginning to look like an actual house. I can get a bit giddy in that moment, if I like how it’s taking shape. If I don’t like it, then out comes the Bulldozer. So then, what’s the worst part of building a house? Decorating! I’m kidding – I do enjoy decorating when I’m in the right mood (like after I’ve just downloaded a bunch of cool custom content!). But sometimes I just want to build, build, build and not have to worry about the interiors. And now the big money question which is better, Sims 4 or Sims 3? They both have their share of good and bad, so it’s hard to say one is definitively better, at least from my perspective. The Sims 3 of course has the open world and Create-aStyle, plus it’s just a gorgeous game and at this point full of wonderful content. But I relied heavily on mods to make the gameplay what I wanted it to be, and I never got very attached to my Sims. With Sims 4, I liked my Sims instantly and have already gotten attached to quite a few of them. The

animations seem more fluid to me, and I love my Sims’ expressions. The Create-a-Sim tool is easier to use and just more fun in general – I never really got the hang of making Sims 3 Sims (especially without the use of sliders). And the game runs much more smoothly – barely any lag or crashing (at least without custom content – CC always throws a wrench into the works but I wouldn’t live without it!). The downside naturally is that it’s not a game for world-builders – each neighborhood, while beautifully detailed, is very self-contained and doesn’t feel all that connected to the rest of the world. The loading screens bother me less than I thought they would, but I really miss having a larger world to play in and customize to my liking.

In The Sims 3, I never got very attached to my Sims. With Sims 4, I liked my Sims instantly and have already gotten attached to a few of them.

75

smagazineofficial.co.uk

Which content creators do you admire the most? One of my favorite people on the planet is Sandy from Around the Sims – she’s been creating beautiful content since the Sims 1, and she’s one of the kindest, most talented people in the community. I also really admire sixtyten/Awesims; she doesn’t create anymore, unfortunately, but her items for Sims 3 were some of my absolute 76

favorites. Another Sims 3 creator I love is Baufive, whose attention to detail is astounding, and who is always willing to help other creators – he is very generous with his time and talent. For Sims 4, it’s hard to say, as it’s still early, and there are so many talented people stepping up with conversions, recolors, and new meshes! My Mods folder is bursting with awesome CC from well over a hundred different creators. But aside

from Around the Sims 4, I have to mention a couple: Plasticbox from Mod the Sims, who is basically the Master of Maxis-Match right now and who improves my game nearly every day with cool new stuff; and Orangemittens at the Sims 4 Studio, who works tirelessly to help us all become better creators – I wouldn’t have been able to create my first wallpaper without her very helpful tutorial! 77

smagazineofficial.co.uk

What tips do you have for people that are struggling to build? This is a bit obvious, but to people who are having trouble, I would say “Just keep building.” If a certain house style is giving you fits, try another style. Start with something small, like a cabin or a bungalow, and work up to larger lots. Look at pictures of other Simmers’ builds – or better yet, download them – and study the lot to see how they built it. Also there are so many helpful tutorials online, it’s fairly easy to find more guidance for whatever 78

you’re trying to do. For example, The Sim Supply has a YouTube channel with some great building tutorials. It takes practice and patience, but the more you build, the easier it will get. If you could make an expansion pack for The Sims, what would it be? Something that allows us to expand the worlds a bit – let us build new neighborhoods so we have more lots to play with. I’d love to be able to customize the plants and trees to make it look like autumn, or be able to make more diverse scenery, so

everything’s not just “New Orleansish” or “desert”. I’d also love to have some kind of transportation in the game, whether it be cars and bicycles, or just allowing Sims to click on the trolley or steamboat to travel. Anything that connects my Sims to the larger world in a more realistic way would be awesome. And restaurants! We need those. My ideal EP would somehow throw all those things together.

A big thank you to Jenba for having us talk to her! She currently shares all of her work over on her simblr, and you can click here to visit it. The creators she mentioned, Awesims, AroundTheSims, and TheSimSupply, can be seen by clicking here. 79

yass Alex is much loved within the community for his YouTube channel, GeekTehGames. We talked to him about his channel, his own Sims and what he wants to see next. How would you describe your style of play?

the rules and usually end up cheating my way through it.

I’m a pretty normal player I think, I tend to play with a few different households at once. Sometimes I have current households in different Sims games like The Sims 2 or The Sims 4. Whatever I’m feeling that day. When I’m streaming I usually kill Sims every time, it’s something I weirdly get pure enjoyment out of. But usually I play pretty normally, I’m not a fan of challenges since I have problems with following

What’s your favourite household to play with? My favourite household to play with currently is the family I’m currently playing off camera. It started off with 2 Sims and eventually evolved into 6. When I play a household for a while I get crazy attached and addicted to playing them, which is why having long series on a certain expansion pack isn’t really a problem for me.

What encouraged you to start making videos?

What do you love most about The Sims?

Honestly I’ve always been obsessed with the thought of doing YouTube. I started out doing YouTube back in 2009 (I was like 10, the videos are so embarrassing) and I did it for fun. Every view I got was exciting to me. I remember running up to my parents telling them stuff like “I got 10 subscribers!!” and even though they had no idea what I was going on about, they pretended to be excited for the little baby me. I still get that way occasionally, I’m super thankful for all the love and support I’ve gotten over these past two years and I can’t wait to keep doing what I do for as long as it’s fun for me. Once it starts to become a job is when I’ll stop.

Hmm... This is difficult because there’s so much I love. I guess it would be the fact that I can make these little animated people and control their lives. I’m a major control freak so I really like that. Another thing is that I love decorating, it’s the thing I enjoy the most in the game. I love adding little details like adding a lawn flamingo in my kitchen, or adding tons of plants to a room. Finally I would say that I love watching families evolve from generation to generation. I always look back at old screenshots and laugh to myself (which sounds super lame, but it’s the truth).

When did you first play The Sims? I started playing The Sims when I was about 10. My first Sims game was The Sims 2 for DS actually, I instantly fell in love with the game and was glued to it as long as I could. When I found out that there was a whole other side of The Sims (the PC version) I was super excited. I bought The Sims 2 for PC and now we’re here!

103

smagazineofficial.co.uk

How did you discover the community? I’ve been playing The Sims since around 2005, but I discovered the community back in 2012. I was so many different Sims let’s plays that it’d be too much to name off everyone, but I still sometimes go back and watch them. When I joined the community officially with this account it was right before it really blew up in mid-2013. What (or who) do you love most about the community? I think there’s many things to love, and many things to “not love so much”. I love the fact that I can be myself on my channel and Twitter too, I tweet what I want and I really don’t let anyone tell me what to do. I also adore the people that I’ve met here! They’re like family to me and I can’t imagine a day without talking to them.

Finally, what advice do you have for people starting out on YouTube? Surprisingly enough I get this question all the time on Twitter. I only have a few things that helped me keep my head above the water here. Firstly, don’t let anyone get to you. People are nasty, they’ll call you every word in the book before they’re done with you. Another thing is to not let any taste of “fame” get to you. The most unattractive thing to anyone on Twitter/YouTube is a person who changes with fame. Just be you, people like you for you. In short, have fun with it. Don’t let numbers get to you, there’s so much more to it than numbers. Numbers are a small factor, if you pay too much attention to them it takes a HUGE junk of the fun out of it. Thanks to Alex! You can click here to check out his channel.

I adore the people that I’ve met here! They’re like family to me and I can’t imagine a day without talking to them.
