Happy Easter! We’re so glad you’ve joined us at Saint Michael today. We have many groups participating in mission work over the next few months, so please pray that their efforts will help spread God’s love to all. Pick up a copy of the Sunday News today and continue to pray, learn, serve, and give in all the ways you are able.

As we prepare to worship together, I invite you to take a moment and center yourself on God’s presence. Dutch organist Klaas Bolt (1927–1990) studied organ at the Utrecht Conservatory. An avid improviser, he won the Haarlem International Organ Improvisation Competition in 1956 and 1957. He later served as professor of organ at the Sweelinck Conservatory and taught improvisation workshops in the United States. Bolt frequently led demonstrations in Haarlem’s St. Bavokerk, showcasing the organ’s colors through improvised hymn variations. Today’s prelude and postlude, based on a Genevan tune, exemplify his improvisational mastery.

The Nicene Creed (standing)

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. Cecilia McDowall’s “Jubilate Deo” was composed for the 75th anniversary of Saint Michael and All Angels. Written for adult and youth choirs, the piece combines McDowall’s rhythmic vitality and lyrical style with a joyful setting of the “Jubilate Deo” text. This morning at the 9:00 a.m. Traditional Service, the Saint Michael Choir, Choristers, and Cherubs join together to present this musical offering.

During the season of Easter, we return to the practice of the early church and stand during the Prayer of Consecration and the Post-Communion Prayer. You may also stand to receive Communion at the altar rail.

Please remain standing as you are able. We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

All are invited to come forward to the Communion rail at the direction of our ushers. Stand or kneel at the rail as you are able, and receive the wafer in the palm of your outstretched hands. If you desire a gluten-free wafer, clasp your hands in front of you with your palms down. Receive the wine by drinking from the chalice as it is offered to you, or by retaining the wafer, to dip lightly into the chalice for yourself. If you are not receiving, you may cross your arms over your chest and receive a blessing. If you are unable to physically come to the rail, please indicate to an usher that you would like to receive Communion at your seat.

Ralph Vaughan Williams was a preeminent twentiethcentury English composer, conductor, and organist. As editor of The English Hymnal (1906)—still in use today—he made a lasting mark on church music. His motet “O Taste and See,” based on Psalm 34:8, was composed for Queen Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation and performed during its Communion service.
