The annual Minute to Win It competition continued the Homecoming festivities for student organizations as they played an assortment of games in Strawberry Stadium. The games were played on Wednesday, Oct. 19 as Alpha Omicron Pi and Delta Tau Delta finished in first place, Black Student Union and NAACP finished in second place and in third place, Theta Phi Alpha and Kappa Sigma. “I think it went really good,” said Harley Arrington, Student Director of Homecoming. “It was my first time doing it, so it was definitely a handful, but it went great. I feel like the games were a lot of fun. I’m really happy with the way it went.” The teams were made up of student organizations that were

either by themselves or teamed up with other organizations. The other teams were Phi Mu and Kappa Alpha Order, Alpha Sigma Tau and Sigma Tau Gamma, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Theta Chi and Pi Kappa Alpha, and Catholic Student Association. “We had 10 sign up, but eight showed up,” said Arrington. Minute to Win It gave students a chance to do something hands on and physically active for Homecoming. “Minute to Win It allows five people from each of the organizations to participate,” said Arrington. “The students love to come out and watch it to cheer on their friends. It’s easy to see cause they get to sit in the bleachers and watch their friend compete and can cheer on them.” The first game was Separation Anxiety. The second game was Noodling Around, a game where the participants had to put one

uncooked spaghetti noodle in their mouth and pick up a penne noodle until they looped all of them onto the spaghetti. “My favorite one was the one with the noodles,” said Nick Johnson, a spectator and senior nursing major. In the dice game, participants had to balance dice on a popsicle stick with it in their mouth. The last game was Wet Ball, where a balloon had to be sprayed across 10 yards on the field. Despite not winning, other contestants enjoyed the competition and had fun with their fellow students. “I enjoyed it this year,” said President of the BCM Bella Mokeba. “Obviously it’s a competition so sometimes I got a little frustrated, but it was still fun. This is one of my favorite events for Homecoming. I think the most people come out for this besides Lip Sync. It’s fun to have all your friends come out and cheer you on.”

Wind symphony to bring Disney to Pottle BY AUSTIN CRADIC Staff Reporter

Southeastern Wind Symphony returns this year with two performances and songs from classic Disney movies including special guest movies like “Star Wars.” “We’re doing the music from Disneyland, some music from ‘Star Wars,’” said Dr. Glenn J. Hemberger, Director of Southeastern Wind Symphony and Graduate Studies. “We’re calling this ‘Disney and Friends’, so we can do Pixar, ‘How to Train a Dragon,’ music from ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ music from ‘Aladdin,’ music from ‘The Incredibles,’ music from ‘Frozen’ and a medley from ‘Lion King.’” The symphony will be performing the event on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. and again at 4 p.m. in the Pottle Auditorium. Admission is $4 for guests of all ages including university students and tickets

go on sale that morning at 11 p.m. until they are sold out. “We’re kind of doing a take off of what we did last year,” said Hemberger. “Last year we turned almost 300 people away, so we’re doing two shows this year.” The first year, the symphony focused on Disney songs. With this being the 2nd annual performance, Hemberger decided to add the “And Friends” edition to the lineup so the music more than features Disney music and characters. As November draws near, all of its members are getting ready for this year’s performance. “We’ve had a few runthroughs of a few of the pieces,” Isabella Basanti, a graduate student in flute performance. “I’m excited.” Andres Chavez, a graduate student in flute performance and resident of Colombia, stated that not all of the songs are familiar to him.

“For me this is something new, so I came from a different culture,” said Chavez. The performers will also be in the Pottle lobby after the performance for a meet and greet with the kids and other Disney fans. They will also be available in various Disney costumes and will be signing autographs for anyone as those characters. Elizabeth Brown/ The Lion’s Roar
