Advanced Natural Resource and Environmental Economics Advanced Natural Resource and Environmental Economics What policy should we use to achieve a certain environmental quality at the lowest cost? How shall the combination of costly actions in different countries be in order to achieve an international cooperation? How much fish can be taken without running the risk of extinguishing it in the long run? What is the value of a cleaner Baltic Sea? What are the relationships between population, economic growth and environment? To what extent can the government or any other federal authority change property rights in order to improve the environmental quality? Advanced economic theory and methods are analysed and applied during the class to answer these questions. Analytical Methods Analytiska metoder Only open for students accepted to an exchange programme This course covers the mathematical methods that are widely used in advanced economic and econometric analysis. A central part is the solution of optimization problems. The course also presents basic concepts of game theory, including important equilibrium concepts. Independent Project – Degree Project in Economics D Självständigt arbete i nationalekonomi D Only open for students accepted to an exchange programme Before course start, you should have formulated your thesis subject and been assigned an individual supervisor. Lessons about problem formulation, searching literature and research methodology are given successively as you apply it in your thesis, and present it for the other students and the teachers. After the first two weeks in this way, your individual supervisor take over and arrange an introductory seminar on your formulation of the problem as well as on your choice of research methodology, literature and theory. In the middle of the course, your individual supervisor will arrange a “half-way” seminar. At the end of the course your individual supervisor will arrange your final seminar. Application code SLU-SLU-10121 Credits 30 HEC Subject Economics Level and depth Master Language English Location Uppsala Time 30/08/10-16/01/11, 100%, daytime Prerequisites Knowledge equivalent to English B from upper secondary school is required as from the academic year 2009/10. Knowledge equivalent to 90 HEC in Economics of which at least 30 HEC at C-level. Additional information Every student who writes a thesis is assigned a supervisor for her work. The supervisor shall act as advisor, be inspirational, and promote discussion. The thesis can be conducted for external clients and occasionally with external supervisors. There will always be an academic supervisor who is responsible for the scientific foundation of the work. The thesis must be an independent project. This means that every student will carry out the entire thesis process. Two or three students may collaborate e.g. by treating different parts of a problem within a common field of study. The rules for theses conducted abroad etc. can be found in the study handbook of each study programme.

Independent Project /Degree Project in Economics D Magisteruppsats – nationalekonomi Only open for students accepted to an exchange programme With successful completion of this course, students will be able to: – identify and formulate problems from different perspectives – understand and apply different theoretical and methodological principles and assumptions – use previously acquired knowledge to independently solve the problem – acquire a subject related specialization and apply it – construct/use models to describe and handle the problem and collect relevant data in order to solve the problem – write in a correct, well-structured and interesting way which includes using references correctly – make oral presentations of own work.
