Improve Your Immune System
improve your Immune System with Nutrition!
by Dr. Hepsharat Amadi
Before discussing which foods improve immunity, let me share a little about those foods and drinks that don't. Number one on this list would be sugar. Sugar has been found to reduce white blood cells' ability to kill germs the more of it is added to their environment. Good alternatives to sugar are stevia and monkfruit extract. Besides sugar, dairy products and gluten-containing foods also tend to reduce immunity by being poorly digested, contributing to allergies and mucus. They can also slow down elimination which can also compromise immunity. Congestion in the colon causes congestion in the lungs, which are the primary route by which a lot of germs enter the body. This includes the nose and sinuses. Over-consumption of red meat can also clog the colon, and it is the item that takes the longest to traverse the gut, because it is so fibrous and relatively difficult to break down. And, of course, drinking alcohol is not helpful for the immune system. In summary, the best nutrition to strengthen the immune system, is a plant-based organic diet. Herbs used in cooking can be very helpful as adjuncts as well. Good examples of these would be ginger, garlic, onions, scallions, leeks, turmeric, shiitake mushrooms, and citrus fruits.

The Flu...
who knew?

Before germs were discovered, people believed that the flu was caused by some occult power of the stars. "Influenza" is Italian for "influence," meaning the effects of the heavens. Today, we know that you can get the flu because your kid sneezed on you!
