Township road budget shows little movement By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

In 2011, the Antioch Township roads and bridges requested $2,681,962 and received $2,098,811 In 2012, the levy was $2,536,062 and $2,168,527 was received. This year, the new budget amount is $2,285,132 with a mill rate of 0.257. The revenues and expenditures expected for the four road funds are $295,550 for the general road fund; $27,300 for the insurance

fund; $1,833,282 for the permanent road fund and $129,000 for the equipment and building fund Highway Commissioner Mark Ring works hard with his crew of seven full-time and one part-time to provide services within the budget on 81 miles of township roads. “We operate from Feb. 1 until a budget is passed in April without a budget,” Ring said in a recent telephone interview, “and have to take that into consideration with every budget we write.”

The fiscal year, according to Illinois state law, runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1. In additional, Ring must make sure he has cash on hand to continue to provide services until June when the bulk of tax money is received. “Even though this winter was terrible,” Ring said, “we still have money left and we didn’t need to borrow from the township. We did run out of salt and the cost from vendors was so high we didn’t buy more from them. But we have good

working relationships with surrounding municipalities that we worked out a deal with Warren.” Ring also adds bird’s eye sand to the salt mix. As the temperature goes down, the amount of salt in the mix goes up. The bird’s eye provides

traction for motorists. And the substance is organic and large enough not to flow into the Chain of Lakes in storm water. The Antioch Township crew is just about done with the bird’s eye clean up. Ring said they rent a machine for

about five weeks and they bring the bird’s eye back to headquarters. “We will be using the bird’s eye as a base for the new road and parking lot in the Osmond Township Park when it’s time for that,” he explained, “so we are recycling it.”

Let’s play ball!

Antioch Township freezes budget By Gail Peckler-Dziki

pay something to help defray costs and we usually receive $15,000 back.” The levy has been frozen or lowered for the past several years. “I talk to several seniors every week who tell me that they can barely afford their taxes, they can barely afford to stay in the family homes,” Smouse said in a recent telephone interview. “Every time you turn around, taxes go up,” he continued. “With Illinois in such bad shape, when will we get a break? They can’t afford to stay and they can’t afford to sell their homes either. The state is talking about extending income tax and also about taxing retirement and Social Security. The incentive to stay in Illinois is disappearing.”

Eleventh annual Girl-Wise conference is May 3

Girl-Wise is a daylong free conference for all girls attending junior high or high schools throughout the Lake County community. This year’s Girl-Wise conference will take place on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the College of Lake County, Grayslake Campus, Building C. The day begins with registration, a clothing donation center, Jr. Challenge course teambuilding activities, and a resource fair. Thereafter, the girls will convene in the main auditorium for opening remarks and the featured speaker. The featured speaker for this year’s conference is Erin Merryn. Erin was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. It is now her mission to take the stigma and shame off of sexual abuse survivors and give

them a reason to speak. By doing so she speaks at many forums nationwide and has worked very hard to create Erin’s Law. Erin’s law, for states that have passed it, is a requirement of all public schools to teach sexual abuse prevention. Erin will be telling her story of overcoming, education, and prevention. Afterwards, attendees will be divided into junior high and high school breakout groups to address topics dealing with stress, empowerment, healthy body and minds, school success, and others. During the morning breakout sessions parents will also have an opportunity to attend an informative workshop. This year’s topic is “Positive Body Image and Self-Esteem. Following lunch, which is provided for all of the partic-

ipants, the girls will view a play performed by the “Reality Theatre Troupe of Omni Youth Services and complete the second half of the breakout sessions. Throughout the day, the young ladies participate in several activities and are pro-

vided a wealth of information to absorb; e.g., how to begin new friendships, strengthen old friendships, bolster self-esteem, empower and motivate oneself, and just have fun. The conference is a collaborative effort between a

host of agencies and volunteers that include the 19th Judicial Circuit, Regional Office of Education, College of Lake County, Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, Juvenile Officers Association, Juvenile Justice Council, Omni Youth Services,

NICASA, Zacharias Center, Warren Township, One Hope United, Students from Warren Township High School, Huntington Learning Center, Lincolnshire Police Department, the Fitting Room and many volunteers throughout the community.

Free Clinic to have golf outing fundraiser Open Arms Free Clinic Inc. will have its second annual golf outing from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 3 at Hawk’s View Golf Club, 7377 Krueger Road, Lake Geneva. The first-place foursome prize will be a Hawk’s View gift certificate 18 holes of golf. Prizes will also be awarded for second place and random score card drawing. Giveaways and contests will take place throughout the event.

Back by popular demand is a “Beat the Padre challenge at Hole No. 17, a par-3 hole. A circle with a 10- to 15-foot radius will be drawn around the Rev. Daniel Sanders. For donations of $5 to $20 dollars, golfers can try to “beat Sanders. In addition, Kunes Country Ford has donated a Ford Focus for a hole-in-one contest at Hole No. 11, also a par 3. Cost is $110 per golfer or

$400 for a foursome, which includes 18 holes of golf, cart, lunch and dinner. Cost for dinner only is $45. Dinner guests should arrive between 5 and 5:45 p.m. To register, visit Open Arms Free Clinic Inc’s website at www.openarmsfreeclinic.org Check-in and lunch will be at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start for 18 holes of golf at noon. At 5 p.m., golfers will return to the club house for appetizers.

At 6 p.m., a two-meat buffet dinner will be served and silent auction and bucket raffle will take place. Proceeds will benefit the Open Arms Free Clinic Inc., a free, non-emergency health clinic in Elkhorn that serves people who do not have health insurance and who live or work in Walworth County with a household income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.

Little Theater in the Church presents ‘The Tempest’ “The Tempest” by William Shakespeare is rocking along nicely toward its May 9 opening. The Mother’s Day weekend performance will be the only chance for audiences to see this new approach to possibly the most unusual play in the Shakespearian repertoire. It is not a history, or a romance, a tragedy nor a comedy. It is simply “The Tem-

pest,” a story of betrayal within a royal family, kidnapping of two innocent, defenseless people (one a 3-year-old child) and a strange magic force that allows them to survive on a deserted island for 12 years. And then – revenge. All performances will be in Wesley Hall of the United Methodist Church of Antioch, 848 Main Street in

Antioch. It is being presented by the Little Theater in the Church and Festival of Arts of Antioch and is directed by Ken Smouse, who created the adaptation of the classic play. The show will be on Friday May 9 and Saturday May 10 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday May 11 at 6:30 p.m. The early curtains are to allow for full family attendance. The show will be enjoyed by all

ages. Tickets are priced $10 dollars for adults and $5 dollars for students. Coffee, punch and cookies will be served following the performances. Tickets may be reserved by calling the church office at (847) 395-1259 or the director at (847) 395-1333. Seating space is limited. The all-star cast is led by Justin Kezerow of Zion in the

role of Prospero, Tom Housman of Antioch as Gonzalo, Jeneva Petersen of Wisconsin as Miranda, Rob Weckler of Antioch as Alonzo, Nikki Georgia of Antioch as Ariel, and Isaac Armstrong of Antioch as Ferdinand. Other featured performers are Peter Pintozzi, Andrew Parish, Jerod Howard, Kevin Carr, Daren Walsh, Kellie Smouse, Roz Ohlinger, and

Terry O’Brien. In addition, a group of adorable young ladies who play the Sprites: Caitlan Cannon, Claire Cannon, Angelique Ganong, Meghan Georgia, Jacinto Petersen, and Elizabeth Squire. It will be an entertaining show in the fashion of touring companies of the 15th and 16th centuries except there are females in the cast. How shocking can you get?

Warner added that employees in the establishment performed as they have been trained to in the event of a fire. He expects the popular eatery and pub to reopen for business later in the week. performers. Fortunately, Mallory Bray was able to accept our invitation to play. She is a wonderfully talented violinist.” The Symphony No. 5 has sparked intrigue in the musical world. When Shostakovich composed the piece in 1937, he feared for his life. Soviet authorities had labeled him a “dangerous” artist because they did not approve of an opera he composed. “This piece was his ‘apology’ to get back in good graces,” explained Anderson. “The music takes us through a roller coaster ride of emotions, from bitter agony, to military pride, to joyous triumph. While the piece appears to have appeased the censors, questions have surrounded it since its first performance. Was it really an apology? Or did Shostakovich infuse the piece with elements of irony that in fact made it the opposite?” Tickets to the concert are $10 for adults, free for students in grades K through 12. They may be purchased with a credit card at LakeGenevaOrchestra.org, or with cash or check at the door. Calvary Community Church is located at Highway 50 and Harris Road, Williams Bay, Wis.

The Lake Geneva Symphony Orchestra’s season finale will feature Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, one of the most powerful pieces in the orchestral repertoire, according to LGSO Music Director David Anderson. The orchestra also will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto with violinist Mallory Bray. The concert will be at Calvary Community Church at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 17. Bray is a former concertmaster of the LGSO who is presently pursuing graduate studies at the University of Michigan School of Music. She has been a member of the UW Whitewater Faculty String Quartet, and has performed with the Madison, Portland Columbia, Wheaton, and UW Whitewater Symphony Orchestras. LGSO originally scheduled Icelandic violinist Ari Vilhjalmssohn to perform the violin concerto. “We were surprised and disappointed that we were unable to obtain a visa for Mr. Vilhjalmssohn to come to America,” said LGSO President Mike Frazier. “It turns out the U.S. government makes it difficult to bring in international

Fake Bonnie and Clyde murder car to be displayed at Volo Auto Museum Eighty-years-ago this May, a couple of the most notorious criminals in U.S. history met their fate in a hail of bullets. Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow were driving a stolen Ford V-8 sedan near Sailes, La., on May 23, 1934, when a law enforcement posse ambushed the pair. Infamous

at the time, the duo’s fame flared anew after release of the 1967 Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway film, “Bonnie and Clyde.” While most have heard of the murderous bank robbers, lesser known is the tale of what became of the Ford they were driving when they were

gunned down. The car’s notoriety drew hordes of curious onlookers after it first was embroiled in a legal battle over ownership, and later became a traveling anti-crime exhibit. Its popularity was so intense, in fact, it spurred a smattering of fakes, which

eventually drew their own manner of law enforcement attention, said Brian Grams, Volo Auto Museum director. “In effect, Bonnie and Clyde’s crime spree continued even after death,” said Grams, who acquired one of the Fords circulated under false pretenses back in the ’30s, and plans

a live-action display this Memorial Day weekend detailing the history of the real and false exhibits of the era. “Our presentation will talk about how there were several fake Ford sedans making the rounds at fairs and carnivals throughout the south,” Grams said. Re-enactor Justin Fiorelli will embody one of the era’s hucksters, drawing crowds to hear the tale of the “amazing, bullet-riddled death car.” Presentations will take place Saturday, Sunday and Monday, May 24-26. “Everyone’s heard of Bonnie and Clyde’s reign of terror and their execution, but that’s

not where the story ended,” Grams said. “We’ll tell audiences some intriguing history, like how the actual car came to be owned by a man named Charles Stanley, who took it on tour. “Even people who encountered the real car were skeptical, because there were a number of fakes out there,” Grams continued. “We have one of the original fakes.” The real death car is on exhibit at Whiskey Pete’s Resort and Casino in Primm, Nev. In the aftermath of the May 23, 1934, deaths of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, hucksters presented several fake “death cars” at various venues, hoping to draw curious crowds. The Volo Auto Museum has acquired one of the original fakes, and will offer throughout Memorial Day weekend re-enactments and intriguing history about the genuine death car and its imitations.

Centegra offers new eating disorder support group Beginning May 12, Centegra Health System will offer a new eating disorder support group. This group will focus on improving unhealthy eating habits such as food restriction, overeating, emotional eating or managing an unhealthy body image. Participants will gain support and learn how to continue managing eating disorder behaviors. This interactive support group is designed to help people recover and build strong support systems. Research

has shown that developing a strong support system is an integral part of the recovery process. This therapy group is led by a mental health professional and a registered dietitian, both who work with Centegra Physician Care. The first session will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 12 in the Crystal Lake Medical Arts Building conference room. Sessions will be the second Mondays of each month. For more information, call (800) 765-9999.

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will offer a cholesterol screening at Harvard-Diggins Library, 900 E McKinley Street, Harvard, on Thursday, May 22, from 9 to 11 a.m. Appointments are required by calling (815) 334-4851. The cost is $35. The screening requires a 12-hour fast and includes total cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, fasting blood glucose, triglycerides, blood pressure, heart age assessment and cardiovascular education. A nursing consult is available once results are received. Why is cholesterol important? High cholesterol has a lot to do with your chances of getting heart disease. Although it usually has no signs or symptoms, it can be

treated. In fact, high cholesterol, high blood pressure and diabetes are all major risk factors for heart disease. Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise can also put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. Everyone can take steps to lower their risk of heart disease and heart attack by addressing these risk factors. By quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight, you can keep blood cholesterols down. For more information on cardiovascular disease and its risk factors, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc. gov/heartdisease/what_you_ can_do.htm.

Health department observes National Infant Immunizations Week, April 26 to May 3 life. “Babies need to visit a doctor or clinic for vaccinations at least five times by the age of 2 for protection against serious childhood diseases,” said Tony Beltran, the Lake County Health Department’s Executive Director. “Immunizations not only provide individual protection to each child, but protect the health of the entire community.” The Health Department’s Immunizations Program works to prevent the spread of illness by vaccinating

adults and children for protection against a wide variety of diseases. These diseases can be especially serious for infants and young children. Last year the program provided more than 20,000 vaccinations to babies up to 2 years of age and more than 23,000 vaccinations to children between 2 and 18 years of age. Vaccine-preventable diseases still circulate in the United States and around the world. In 2013, the Lake County Health Department investigated nine outbreaks of vac-

cine-preventable illnesses. One example of the seriousness of vaccine-preventable diseases is an increase in measles cases or outbreaks that were reported in 2013. Data from 2013 showed a higher than normal number of measles cases nationally and in individual states, including an outbreak of 58 cases in New York City that was the largest reported outbreak of measles in the U.S. since 1996. Vaccines are among the most successful and cost-ef-

Village responds to private water service line insurance The Village of Fox Lake is asking homeowners throughout the Village to contact staff in the Sewer and Water Department at (847) 587-3506 prior to considering the purchase of private water service line insurance that they may not need. Homeowners have been receiving mail from a private company offering insurance coverage for private water lines. The village is not affiliated with this company.

By contacting the village, homeowners can learn more about their private water line in order to make an informed decision. Staff can help a homeowner determine the age of their water line and the material it is made out of. In Fox Lake water lines are made out of a variety of materials due to the age of the water system. For a majority of Fox Lake residents, becoming

more familiar with their own situation is a great first step towards assessing the cost versus benefit of this insurance. The village also recommends that homeowners learn more about the companies offering such services through the Better Business Bureau at (800) 273-1002. Village homeowners can contact the Sewer and Water Department at (847) 5873506.

Fox Lake to flush all fire hydrants in North Water System Beginning the week of Monday, May 5, and finishing on or about Thursday, May 15, the Fox Lake Sewer and Water Department will flush all fire hydrants in the North Water System. This is to ensure they are in good working order in case of emergencies and to help flush sediment out of the distribution system. Signs will be posted in each area before flushing begins. Flushing will be done between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.

No laundry on flush days Do not do laundry on the day hydrants are flushed in your area. Flushing stirs up rust and you don’t want that in your washer. After flushing in your area if there is any discoloration in your faucet water, let it run for a few minutes, preferably from the tub spout, and it will clear up. The water is safe to drink. If you have any questions, call the Fox Lake Sewer and Water Department at (847) 587-3506 Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. or e-mail horvathr@foxlake.org.

Animal Assisted Activities program fosters respect and self-awareness By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT

The Main Stay Therapy Riding program site has been operating since 1987, and its purpose has been to serve individuals with special needs through the use of animals, nature, and acquiring a skill set not often accessible to their target group. Participants are afforded the opportunity to ride a horse, while being led through a variety of maneuvers connected to equine sports. A bucolic setting, located at 6919 Keystone Road in Richmond, only reinforces the process of challenging individuals physically, emotionally, and providing a level of self-confidence, translating into other areas of a participant’s life. Instructors and volunteers join forces to “show the ropes” of horseback riding in the center arena. Leading the animals by their reins and explaining the fundamentals involved in the sport is only one aspect. Special needs clients find themselves mimicking the sway and rhythms of the ride when dismounted and standing, something that helps relieve stress through a gentle mobility. An adjunct program that parallels the riding therapy, also involves the same target group and expands to include at-risk youth, seniors, and those being introduced to so-

cial situations. The Animal Assisted Activities program operates at the site, using an adapted farm structure where the interaction is on a tangible level of sensory input sights and sounds. “It depends on the clientele we’re serving in the population, we want to use the animals to promote the social, emotional, and behavioral needs of the client,” said Carla Kaizen, the program’s coordinator. “It’s a diverse client population with seniors, young people in court diversionary programs, at-risk youth. They interact with the animals, and each other. “This way, that client will be able to become a more positive member of their community, whether at home, school, or in the workplace. The benefits of the relaxed environment are the key for such an effect.” Kaizen is a certified instructor through PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) International, an organization that maintains a global reach as a resource for equine-assisted activities throughout the United States and Canada with some 850-member centers. “One of the unique things about our program is using horses from the riding therapy program and the small mixed livestock herd (sheep, goats, miniature equine stock) that

It forms a bond between them. “The purpose is that the animal has overcome its previous circumstances and recovered. It then empowers the client to see that if the animal can overcome difficulty, they too can be confident in overcoming their own situations, or circumstances.” The “hands-on” approach is crucial to the program, delivered through trained instructors, and volunteers. Like the riding therapy, an informative basis on specific needs, similar to individualized educational plans through a school model, and how to conduct the sessions, are part of the process.
