Body of missing The body of a fisherman who had been missing since Sept. 16 was recovered by search crews just before 8:30 a.m. Friday, according to the Kenosha County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Department. The body of John Spoor, 66, of McHenry, was found floating in Silver Lake about seven feet of water, according to authorities. The were no signs of foul play, the release said. An autopsy was scheduled through the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office. Spoor was reported missing just before 10 p.m. Sept. 16 after he failed to return from a day of fishing on Silver Lake. He had left home about 8 a.m. and was expected to return at 4

p.m., authorities said. Sheriff’s officials found Spoor’s car in a parking lot near a Silver Lake boat launch and located his boat a short time later floating in the lake not far from the shore. The Sheriff’s Department marine unit, Salem Rescue and Department of Natural Resources personnel searched for Spoor until about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The search resumed later that morning and continued off- and-on through Thursday, according to information released by the Sheriff’s Office. Other agencies involved in the search included the Village of Silver Lake Fire Department, Town of Salem Fire Department, and Town of Randall Fire Department.

Scammers are sending emails claiming to be from the Social Security Administration, Service Canada and other organizations. These emails say that you’re eligible for a new benefit and need to complete an online form to apply, asking you to provide personal information. The Better Business Bureau urges people to be cautious of suspicious emails and to never give personal information to anyone saying they work for the government. “People often get scared when they receive emails saying it’s the government and want to respond,â€? says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Remember, the government never contacts people via phone or email; so never give away bank account numbers, your social security numbers or your personal address.â€? In this latest scam, when the form is completed, a confirmation page promises that your case will be reviewed and a government agent will contact you. But this isn’t the case. Scammers use your information to commit identity theft, possibly redirecting your benefits to an account controlled by a thief. Be aware of other variations of this scam. For example, scammers also call residents and ask for personal information over the phone. Other email versions use a slightly different scenario, such as asking you to update or verify account information. Here are some ways to spot and avoid these types of scams: • Be skeptical of email. Fruits of the season Here are a few tips when heading out to the local orchard or farm bring along a ladder. You should still be able to find plenty of apples close to the ground. A good farmer will know when certain varieties of apples are ripe, and he or she will likely cordon off trees that are not ready for picking. Ripe apples will be crisp and firm. Keep in mind that apples ripen from the outside of the tree inward. Those are the ones usually picked first, anyway. Try to get to an orchard earlier in the season. If you wait too long, the trees may be picked of most of the best fruit. Depending on where you live, apple-picking season may begin in mid-September and continue into mid-October. Apples can bruise, so don’t toss them into baskets when picking. Also, wait to wash apples until right before eating to prevent moisture-related spoilage. Apples keep best in a cool location.

Apples Many orchards that have open picking seasons plant dwarf apple trees to make the picking process easier, particularly for young children, so there’s no need to Pumpkins

Pumpkin patches are often found in close proximity to apple orchards. Picking pumpkins to eat or decorate the home is a popular autumn activity, one that families often enjoy together. When visiting a pumpkin patch, dress accordingly. That means wearing shoes that you don’t mind getting dirty, as the patch may be muddy. Layer clothing in case it is a chilly day. Breezes are more pronounced in open fields. Pumpkins are “long-keepers,” which means if they are uncut or not damaged, they can last for several weeks. This means you can pick pumpkins at the same time as apples. When selecting a pumpkin, look for one that is completely orange. After picking, a green or yellow pumpkin may never ripen to orange. Bring along a small wagon and knife so that you can cut the vine, if necessary. Pumpkins are heavy, and a wagon will come in handy,

especially with youngsters in tow. Ripe pumpkins should not dent easily. Examine your pumpkin for holes or insects, which could indicate internal rot that greatly reduces the shelf life of the pumpkin. Remember, carving the pumpkin reduces its life expectancy, so be sure to reserve that task until close to Halloween. If you desire a pumpkin to turn into a baked treat or other dish, you will need a type of small, sweet cooking SANDRA LANDEN-MACHAJ Illinois Hi-Liter pumpkin known as a “sugThis crate full of ripe apples is ready for customers at ar pumpkin.” The meat of this pumpkin is much less Brightonwoods Orchard near Burlington, Wis. stringy and smoother than decorative pumpkin varieties. Although scores of people cite summer as their favorite time of year, autumn also is a beloved season. Cool breezes and crisp air seem tailor-made for afternoons spent enjoying the great outdoors. The pleasant autumn weather and awe-inspiring foliage may be the reason so many festivals and outdoor events are scheduled this time of year. Apple and pumpkin picking are popular fall pastimes. Neighborhood orchards open their doors to the public, allowing men, women and children to scour their fields and trees for the perfect finds. Heed these picking tips to make the experience even more of a success.

The referenda would authorize funding of emergency medical and ambulance services in both Antioch village and township through tax increases. Emergency services are provided by the Antioch Fire Department. The 22nd Judicial Circuit Family Violence Coordinating Council, in cooperation with McHenry County College, will host “All in the Family: Violence and Bullying in the Home, School and Community,” a symposium from 8:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29. The event begins with a continental breakfast at 7:45 a.m. and will take place in the Luecht Conference Center at the college, located at 8900 U.S. Hwy. 14 in Crystal Lake. The program aims to bring a multi-disciplinary approach to educating participants about violence and bullying. Participants will explore issues related to bullying, including the relationship between family dynamics and bullying, the role of technology in bullying, schools’ and parents’ response to bullying and the effect of substance abuse in domestic violence and bullying. The keynote speaker is Gail Sullivan, chairperson of the School of Justice at Alta Colleges. She is a certified trainer for Illinois Law Enforcement and Training Standards Board. She will present “No More Bull: Straight Talk About Bullying.” Discussions on substance use and bullying and violence and the incidence of gangs in McHenry County will also be featured. Other symposium highlights will include local school administrators speaking on the schools response to bullying, a local police sergeant’s presentation on cyber bully-

ered with a thick wax. This wax protects the inner components of the needles, preventing them from freezing. 12. Autumn also signals another colorful spectacle apart from the tree leaves. The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, tends to be visible this time of year. This is because geomagnetic storms are about twice as likely to occur during the fall thanks to cool evening weather.

Family violence symposium to focus on bullying

hails from ancient Celtic tradition. The Celts believed ghosts roamed on Halloween, and people wore disguises to hide from the spirits. 10. You’re bound to see pumpkins as part of autumn decor. The pumpkin was first named by the Greeks. They called this edible orange item “pepon,” which means “large melon.” 11. Evergreen trees will not lose their leaves like deciduous trees. Their leaves, also called needles, are cov-

leaves, but they are just overpowered by the abundance of green from the chlorophyll in the leaves. Come autumn, however, when the sun weakens and days grow shorter, the amount of chlorophyll in leaves diminishes, allowing the other pigments in the leaves to show through. 5. Red and purple leaves are actually caused by the presence of sugars from sap that is trapped inside of the leaves. 6. Fall is a peak migration time for many species of birds. During autumn, birds will fly to other areas as they seek more hospitable climates. The Arctic tern journeys about 11,000 miles each way for its annual migration. That is like going all the way across the United States about three and a half times 7. Contrary to popular belief, squirrels who have spent the entire autumn collecting acorns and other foods do not hibernate for the winter. Rather, they spend the majority of their time in nests they built to shelter them from harsh weather. When squirrels do come out in winter, they are usually tunneling under the snow to find the food they buried during the fall. 8. Several cultures have ancient traditions that coincide with autumn. For example, the Chinese celebrate the Moon Festival to give thanks for a successful summer harvest. 9. Halloween is a large part of autumn. The concept of wearing masks and costumes

The cool, crisp days of autumn have arrived. As fall foliage creates a colorful display and kids frolic in leaf piles on the lawn, you may want to pay some mind to a few lesser-known facts about this beloved time of year. Autumn may call to mind Halloween and the return of school, but there are other factors that make this season unique. 1. The first day of autumn is known as the autumnal equinox. On this day, the number of hours of daylight and darkness are equal. This is because the sun is aligned with the center of the Earth between the north and south of the planet. The other equinox occurs in the spring, which arrives in the third week of March in the Northern hemisphere. 2. In Greek mythology, autumn was a time when Persephone, the daughter of Demeter, was abducted by Hades, the god-king of the underworld. During this time, Demeter, the goddess of the harvest, was distraught and the ground grew sparse and cold. When Persephone returned in the springtime, plants and life bloomed anew because of Demeter’s happiness. 3. Those who live closest to the equator, which is the center of the planet, never experience the season of autumn. Around the equator, the temperature remains consistently warm. 4. Yellow, orange and variations thereof always reside in the pigmentation of tree

Iowa man is charged in road rage stabbing The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has charged an Iowa man with aggravated battery stemming from a road rage incident Sept. 17 in the area of Highway 12 and Volo Village Road in Volo. Scott Allen Schultz, 45, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, was charged with aggravated battery by use of a deadly weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm and aggravated battery upon a public roadway. Schultz’s bond was set at $25,000. He is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 6, 2014. According to news reports, the incident began when Schultz allegedly honked at the other driver and he responded with a gesture. The two eventually pulled off the road where a physical altercation ensued and the victim was allegedly stabbed by Schultz. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the initial responding

deputy recognized the victim sustained what appeared to be a major injury to his leg near the femoral artery and immediately applied a tourniquet to control the bleeding until rescue arrived. The victim was transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center. A statewide broadcast was distributed to surrounding agencies and agencies along the projected path of the offending vehicle/suspect. The vehicle was located by the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office in the city of Morrison, Ill., near the Iowa border. Lake County Sheriff’s Office detectives responded to the City of Morrison and arrested Schultz. The Sheriff’s Office thanked the public for helping locate Schultz. Many of the leads were as a direct result of the public, cell phone pictures and cell phone video. These tips led to the arrest of the suspect.

Like father, like son Hoehn family has a legacy with Fox Lake fire district CORRESPONDENT

The Village of Fox Lake was incorporated in 1907, with the actual state articles signifying it as a municipality being signed by William A. Rose, a contemporary of Abraham Lincoln during his career as a circuit-riding lawyer. The Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Department was formed the following year, literally as a group of volunteers until being revamped into a cohesive organization in 1923. With the village providing funding and support later in that decade, the issues of commitment and the lack of equipment were answered by decisive action. The Fox Lake Fire Protection District was formed in 1938 to encompass the unincorporated areas surrounding the village including the rural areas. “It has come a long way from then, and the Fox Lake Fire Department itself was absorbed into the district in June 2008,” said Ron Hoehne, the district’s fire chief. “The equalized assessment valuation for property taxes did that, and allowed for employing full-time personnel at three fire stations,

at strategic points around the area. “Our coverage area goes from the Wisconsin border to the north, to Route 120 at the south end, and those three stations are laid out in such a way that we have a three-minute response time from station to location…and time is always the critical aspect.” Hoehne has served as the fire chief since 2001, assuming the duties following the retirement of his late father, Stu Hoehne. He also held a second supervisory role until that year by serving as the head of the Fox Lake Public Works Department. The Hoehne legacy within the department runs back to 1957, when the elder Hoehne joined the fire department and chaired the very first Fox Lake Fireman’s Festival in 1958. He oversaw the expansion of Fire Station No. 2 at 306 Washington Street in Ingleside, and the construction of both Fire Station No. 3 on Molidor road in Ingleside, and Fire Station No. 4 on State Park road in Fox Lake. The latter facility was named in his honor. “It was really something to be able to grow up in the

neighborhood, and watch my father work in the position, the care and detail he allotted for in the performance of the job, it’s a real honor to follow in his footsteps,” said Ron Hoehne. “We grow and get busier each year, requiring more personnel, and we’ve expanded our expertise and capabilities to supply different services to our communities in need.” Fox Lake is part of the Mutal Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS), which includes and connects all the departments in northeastern Illinois and southeastern Wisconsin on a call system for various emergency response needs. Fox Lake is at the top of the response list for its wellknown diving rescue team, with resources that have grown over the years to include state-of-the-art equipment and van for mobile capabilities. The department also has hazardous materials response, below ground rescue, and wild land firefighters. “Each of these support services have requirements of accreditation through advanced training, and simulations,” said Hoehne. “Our

Bomb squad blasts open empty box By Patricia Bogumil STAFF WRITER

Maybe someone had a bunch of old boxes they thought the post office could use. Maybe someone was just fooling around. Or maybe the wind blew the boxes over. It remains anyone’s guess why a box sealed full of empty boxes ended up sitting at the front door of the Twin Lakes, Wis. Post Office before it opened Sept. 12. But the police response required to check out the situation probably cost at least $2,000 in wages, plus other expenses, Twin Lakes Police Chief Dale Racer estimated. Here is what’s known according to a Twin Lake Police Department media release: On Sept. 12, at 6:36 a.m., a citizen called the Twin Lakes Dispatch Center to report a suspicious package sitting in front of the main doors at the Twin Lakes Post Office, 170 Lance Drive.

A report on the incident was sent to the office of the U.S. Postmaster to review and consider for possible further investigation, Racer said.
