Antioch seeks a few good men and women

Village will offer emergency response training The Antioch Community Emergency Response Team is seeking local residents who are willing to be trained to assist in responding to emergencies. Classes will be taught by trained emergency personnel, including firefighters and emergency medical services personnel. The program consists of 20 hours of training and emphasizes hands-on practice. When emergencies happen, CERT members can give critical support to first responders, provide immediate assistance to victims and organize spontaneous volunteers at a disaster site. CERT members can also help with non-emergency

projects that help improve the safety of the community. Through training, citizens can manage utilities and put out small fires; open airways, control bleeding and shock; provide basic medical aid; search for and rescue victims safely and organize themselves and spontaneous volunteers to be effective. Interested residents may learn more by visiting the www.antioch.il.gov/emergmgmt.htm homepage. This training covers basic skills that are important to know in a disaster when emergency services are not immediately available. With training, practice and team-

work, participants will be able to do the greatest good for the greatest number of victims after a disaster, while protecting yourself from becoming a victim, according to officials. For more information about the course, go to the Village Emergency Management website at www.antioch. il.gov. CERT is about readiness, people helping people, rescuer safety and doing the greatest good for the greatest number. CERT is a positive and realistic approach to emergency and disaster situations where citizens will be initially on their own and their actions can make a difference.

Timmy Green, 2, (left) of Crystal Lake and Samuel Youra, 17 months, of Trevor, Wis., boogie to the sounds Chasin’ Mason at the 101-Year Antioch Fire Department Dance held on Toft Avenue between Orchard and Lake streets on Saturday in Antioch. The Milwaukee musical group featured country music laced with rock. They played alternating sets with Sixteen Candles, a rock band specializing in songs from the 80s. The dance was sponsored by the Antioch Firefighters Association and celebrates the anniversary of the department. Saturday’s event was the third annual since being resurrected in 2012. In addition to the music and dancing, a beer garden and food from local restaurants was also available onsite. Funds raised by the dance are used for public education and awareness about the department and for fire prevention programs.

Eleven miles of trails at Richardson corn maze

The Richardson Adventure Farm’s 28-acre corn maze commemorates the 200th anniversary of the bombardment of Fort McHenry, when Francis Scott Key penned the “Star-Spangled Banner” during the War of 1812. This is the Richardson family’s 14th maze, but the first one at a new location on the other side of the farm at 909 English Prairie Rd, Spring Grove. Over the years, maze themes have honored milestones for The Beatles, Boys Scouts, Girl Scouts and military veterans. “You might think that we chose this year’s theme – Fort McHenry – because we’re located in McHenry County,” George Richardson said. “But

McHenry County was named for William McHenry of Vandalia, Ill., who distinguished himself during the Black Hawk Wars.” If the size of Richardson’s maze seems intimidating, don’t worry. The design – with ships, cannons, soldiers, ramparts, ocean and a rising sun – has many entry and exit points. Visitors can walk a small portion of the 11 miles of trails that comprise the design, or the whole thing. Maps are provided. Fans of Richardson Farm will be happy to know that all their favorite activities are still available at the new location: five maze games, pedal carts, a giant slide, jumping pillows, wagon rides, pump-

kin patch, corn cannons, pig races, goats, chickens, bunnies, paintball gallery, gem mining, zorb rides and zip line. A special fenced area for young children has been enlarged, with barrel swings, corncrib cabin, pedal trikes, a child-sized zip line and a jumping pillow. Most activities are included in the admission fee, but there are additional fees for a few activities, such as zorbing, zip line, private wagon rides, paintball gallery, gem mining and private reserved campfire/picnic sites. New this year is a 1950’s carousel, discovered in Florida, which is included with admission. The 700-foot zip

line has been lengthened to 850 feet and the giant slide to 100 feet. There’s a small amphitheater for pig races and exotic animal shows. A new, entry barn speeds up check-in and houses a gift shop, caramel corn and fudge kitchens, and more restrooms. This year, the maze is open Wednesdays through Sundays through Nov. 2, plus Columbus Day. Hours are: Wednesday-Thursday 3-10 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-11 p.m.; Saturday 3-11 p.m.; Sunday noon-10 p.m.; and Columbus Day 10 a.m.-10 p.m. For more information, call (815) 675-9729 or log on to www.RichardsonAdventureFarm.com.

brary Card Sign-Up Month: This is the best time of year to make sure that all members of the family are carded. Join library staff along with Steve Justman and explore how he truly influenced so many others to follow, from Bob Dylan to Bruce Springsteen. With banjo and guitar, this program will feature many Seeger favorites such as “This Land Is Your Land,” “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine,” “Tzena, Tzena, Tzena,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” as well as the historical tie-ins to his biggest influences. • The Essential Great Chicago Fire: Thursday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.: William Pack weaves together technical details of the fire with vivid firsthand accounts from those

who lived through the conflagration of 1871, bringing alive all the excitement and terror in a multi-media storytelling event that will not soon be forgotten. This is storytelling with PowerPoint and physical displays, suitable for teens, adults and families with older children. • Chair Yoga: Mondays, Sept. 22 and 29, Oct. 6 and 13, from 7 to 8 p.m.: Experience safe yoga movements and poses that build awareness of your body and breath, leaving you relaxed and refreshed in this four-week session. Musical Hula Hoops

Barbara Porch, arm raised in foreground, barks out instructions to participants in the “musical Hula Hoops for dogs” contest during the Antioch FallFest held by the Brook Bandshell, 900 Skidmore Dr., in Antioch on Sep. 7. While music played, the dogs were paraded in a circle formed by Hula Hoops on the ground. When the music stopped, the dogs had to sit inside a hoop. The last dog to sit in each round was eliminated. Eventually, one dog reigned supreme and will wear the mantle of “Fastest and Most Accurate Sitter” for the next year. In addition to the canine competition, the two-day event also featured a balloon artist, face painting, pumpkin rolling, and the wiener dog races where area dachshunds raced for the title of Antioch’s fastest wiener. The festival, sponsored by the Antioch Chamber of Commerce, enjoyed near-perfect weather on both days.

Foods such as Brazil nuts, fish and sunflower seeds with high levels of selenium may also help. Teachers’ back-toschool video garners national attention ductions as well. Hein and Brachmann say they are passionate about their jobs and the respective subjects they teach. Their goal is to convey that enthusiasm to their students. “They can realize a little hard work can really pay off,” Brachmann said of the students watching the videos. While video sharing sites, such as You Tube, and evolving technology have given prospective videographers the ability to create and share their creations with ease, Hein takes painstaking efforts behind the music video spoofs. He said filming of “This School” spanned four days and required editing about 10 hours worth of footage down to a 4-minute video. Sitting out this dance

A young girl takes a seat in the middle of Toft Avenue in Antioch Saturday waiting for the action to heat up at the 101-Year Antioch Fire Department Dance. Cooler-than-normal temperatures limited attendance at the event early in the evening. The dance was sponsored by the Antioch Firefighters Association and celebrates the anniversary of the department. Saturday’s event was the third annual since being resurrected in 2012. In addition to the music and dancing, a beer garden and food from local restaurants was also available onsite. Funds raised by the dance are used for public education and awareness about the department and for fire prevention programs.

video. But they also tailored the lyrics and images in such a way that it would resonate with students and faculty in any corner of the country. The melding of the two is perhaps one reason “This School” has gained national attention. The video has received more than a million hits on You Tube, and the numbers are sure to skyrocket after Hein and Brachmann made an appearance on ABC’s “Good Morning America” on Sept. 4. “This School” features a smattering of Union Grove student dancers in all grade levels. There are also a few cameos, including an appearance by Principal Tom Hermann, who is seen in pads and a helmet during a scene about the Broncos. Hein and Brachmann’s infant daughters, born around the same time, are also seen briefly in the video.

They’re at it again – and this time, they’re kicking it old school. Jordan Hein and Mitchell Brachmann, physical education and science teachers, respectively, at Union Grove (Wis.) High School, unveiled their third annual back-toschool video earlier this month – just before the bells once again started sounding – and have added another chapter to the story that has made them YouTube sensations. This year the pair garnered even more attention, landing a spot on ABC’s Good Morning America. As with their prior efforts, their 2014 video is a spoof of a popular song. In “This School,” they borrow the beat and imagery in “Footloose,” the Kenny Loggins hit that dominated radio airwaves 30 years ago. Hein and Brachmann are both 28, meaning the song that inspired “This School” predates them by two years. The idea behind the polished videos, which feature Union Grove students and authentic scenes throughout the community, came after a spark of creativity and a desire to show students — within and outside the walls of Union Grove High School — how fun learning really can be. “It’s really elevated everybody’s mood, coming into the school year,” said Hein, who runs a side business, J&K Hein Productions, with his wife, Katie. The Heins also have used their business to create videos for the high school’s homecoming festivities, football games and wrestling tournaments. Brachmann was brought into the fold as he struck up a friendship with Hein. The two began teaching at Union Grove High School in 2009. Hein presented Brachmann with the idea of creating videos three years ago. Hein and Brachmann’s prior efforts spoofed more contemporary hits. In 2012, their debut effort, “In My Class,” was a take-off of Jason Derulo’s 2009 hit, “In My head.” Their 2013 video, “That’s What Makes School Beautiful” was a re-enactment of One Direction’s 2011 hit, “That’s What Makes You Beautiful.” All of the videos are filled with goofy antics, but there is a serious element to the pro-

Local society, museum strive to maintain Fox Lake’s history

By Gregory Harutunian CORRESPONDENT

In 2005, the late Dr. Mel Platanka, a retired dentist and Eagle Point Road resident, hired a firm to burrow into the ground for a new water well on his property. At approximately the 125foot level, the diggers hit something hard and brought it up. They were pieces of wood that Platanka proudly showed to his neighbors. Confounded by the find, he contact Illinois State Geological Survey representatives who offered a surprising answer. It was cypress wood, and the entire area had been a cypress forest, going back to the ice age. Platanka, a history buff, made one comment at the time, “Well, at least we know our roots.” “Mel (Platanka), and his wife, June, loved the local history and would attend our meetings, learning and swapping stories,” said Nancy Kubalanza, president of the Fox Lake-Grant Area Township Historical Society and Museum, which marked its 11th anniversary in 2014. “We’re still going strong, and new artifacts are being donated and catalogued all the time,” she said. One of the more recent acquisitions are complete newspaper archives of the Fox Lake Press, from the now defunct Lakeland Publications, and The New Sun, from 1994-2006, both containing stories about the village and vicinity. Society members were reviewing and placing the articles into subject headings for research and perusal. The many bound volumes of the Fox Lake Press since it was founded in 1955 are available for viewing by ap-

pointment by calling (847) 587-0544. “We are now working on the lineage of Dollar Lake, and its transformation into the Fox Lake Shopping Center,” said Kubalanza during an interview following the society’s 16th anniversary in 2013. “The site is bounded by Grand and Holly avenues, and Rollins Road. People who live around there say it used to extend further but we want to know how it started, where the idea came from, when it was built in the 1960s.” The historical society had humble beginnings, when Ruth Sutton, a revered writer for the Lakeland Publications chain, organized the group in the mid-1990s. Bud Scott, a former Grant Community High School teacher and Fox Waterway Management Agency official, came along and the duo helped put things together with a framework. The building, which houses the museum at 411 Washington Street in Ingleside, was once the Grant Township meeting hall and offices. “When Gordy Kiesgen was township superintendent, the offices had moved to a complex on Molidor Road, and they were seeking to sell the structure and land. “We got a group of people together, and went before the board with the idea of starting a museum,” Kubalanza said. “They were very receptive, and agreed to sell it for $1, on the condition that the site be used specifically for the purpose of a museum.” That purpose was met, and the intervening years have brought new exhibits, as well as much needed upgrades. “My daughter, Margie, assembles the exhibits and

the artifacts come from area residents, as donations, while some are on loan,” Kubalanza said. “We also needed repairs to the furnace and air conditioning. The society members really came through with donations of $5, $10, $100, and one person gave $1,000. “These are retired people, for the most part, which makes it remarkable.” Kublanza also said that former Fox Lake mayor Ed Bender donated puppets from the old Puppet Bar, a one-time landmark on Eagle Point and the Chain O’ Lakes. They were found after having been stored at a neighbor’s garage when the former recreation spot was demolished. The bar and restaurant was known for its odd atmosphere with various types of animated animals, dancing skeletons, inflating clowns, and other gimmickry comGREG HARUTUNIAN Illinois Hi-Liter ing to life whenever a certain Trains played a huge part in the growth of the Fox Lake-Ingleside downtowns and number was played on the vicinity. Elderly man is treated and released An elderly man from Woodstock has been treated for the West Nile virus, according to McHenry County health officials. He is the first case in which the virus has been transmitted to a human in the county this year. The man, whose name has been withheld, was treated and has been released from an area medical facility. The case was reported Sept. 10. This year there have been eight total human West Nile cases reported throughout Illinois. This year there have been nine batches of mosquitoes that have tested positive for the virus in traps within McHenry County. A total of 204 batches have been tested. The first positive batch was

found in mid-August. . In 2013, a total of 24 batches tested positive between May and October in McHenry County. Last year, 14 people died from contracting the virus throughout the state. A total of 117 cases were reported to the Illinois Department of Public Health. There have also been 13 birds reported as having contracted the virus this year to date. More 35 counties have reported at least one positive batch of mosquitoes this year. Often times, the virus shows no symptoms in those who are young, according to public health officials. Middle-aged people who contract the virus are more likely to show more severe symptoms.

No fatalities have occurred in humans from the West Nile virus this year in Illinois. Citizens are encouraged to take precautions against excessive exposure to mosquito-prone areas. Areas that are most likely to attract mosquitoes include stagnant water and heavily wooded areas. Precautionary measures such as wearing long-sleeve shirts and pants as well as wearing repellant and avoiding too much exposure to the outdoors are recommended. For more information about the virus in our area, please visit the McHenry County Health Department during business hours or by going to the County website.

Court appearance is delayed for former cop

A court appearance scheduled for last week for a Genoa City, Wis., police officer charged with stealing money from his department was delayed until Oct. 13. Aaron E. Henson, 36, was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10 on charges of misconduct in office and theft. Instead the matter was delayed until Oct. 13. Henson pleaded not guilty to the charges July 2. Henson is suspected of stealing more than

$2,000 from a locked bond deposit box at the Genoa City Police Department on at least three occasions in April. Henson was caught on video surveillance while on duty using a fly swatter to retrieve money from the box, according to the criminal complaint. When confronted with the video evidence, Henson admitted stealing money from the department to pay his wife’s medical bills and make his truck payments, according to the complaint.

Tractors for Charity goes to the dogs

Event helps raise funds for K-9 Comfort Dogs By Anne Eickstadt CORRESPONDENT

Rows of immaculately polished tractors and trucks of all types lined up on display during the 10th Annual Tractors for Charity event at Stade’s Farm and Market in McHenry on Sept. 6 and 7. Spectators’ cheering and applause determined the winners of the Show and Shine Contest. All the vehicles sparkled in the sunlight from hours of polishing. When the winner of the tractor portion of the contest was announced, a voice rang out: “Let’s go congratulate grandpa, kids,” and a large portion of the audience stood up. The winner had his very own cheering squad supporting him. The truck segment of the contest contained a wide variety of contestants from semi

cabs to pickups to delivery trucks, all of which participated to support charity. First place went to a 1937 International pickup. Other events for the weekend included a Hay Wagon Back-In Challenge, a penny auction and raffles for an antique tractor and a pig. The tractor pull had categories for vintage tractors, semi tractors and pickup trucks. Stade’s amusement park area kept the children entertained. The proceeds for the weekend long event were shared by FISH, the food pantry in McHenry, and Lutheran Church Charities. LCC is an organization dedicated to “responding to those suffering and in need with the mercy, compassion, presence and proclamation of Jesus Christ.” This includes,

among other services, disaster response and K-9 Comfort Dogs. The comfort dogs are welltrained, certified golden retrievers who are brought into situations where traumatized, lonely or bereft persons can benefit from a living friend but may not have the words or the strength to speak to another human. The LCC Comfort Dogs were among the first of many volunteers to assist Northern Illinois University students and staff following the campus shooting in 2008. The dogs and their handlers are invited to visit schools, nursing homes, veteran’s homes, hospitals, churches and events. K-9 Comfort Dogs are currently at work in Napa, Calif., working with people who were affected by the recent earthquake. Closer to home,

Darlin,’ a golden retriever that works as K-9 Comfort Dog, greets visitors at the Tractors for Charity event earlier this month. K-9 Comfort Dogs was among the beneficiaries of the fundraising event.

Long rows of shiny tractors are the stars of the show at the 10th annual Tractors for Charity event at Stade’s Farm and Market, McHenry, on Sept. 6 and 7. The event raises funds for several causes, including a local food pantry.

severe storms have brought LCC early responders and volunteers to Palatine, Morrison and Joliet. The twin tornados in Pilger, Neb., created an ongoing need for even more volunteers. The most recent branch of LCC and K-9 Comfort Dogs is the new, one-month-old Kare-9 program. Seven puppies, so far, have been recruited into the fledgling program and will be taught to respond Discover the

to military commands. They are being placed with veterans for the benefit of veterans who have returned home with posttraumatic stress disorder or physical, mental or emotional scarring. The Kare9 corps can provide a warm, breathing, non-judgmental presence that vets can interact with to begin to release their internalized traumas. Darlin, one of several comfort dogs in attendance at

Tractors for Charity, is well behaved and very much on duty while wearing her working vest. Comfortable with children and adults alike, she is a lovely, friendly pup who even has her own Facebook page to keep in touch with people she has visited with and to make new friends to visit.
